Hi, I'm currently creating a game and for textures and such, I go into Photo and make them. I also recently discovered a technique for getting 4 maps (specular, gloss, ... , transparancy) into a single image file, by using the RGBA channels, since these maps only use the greyscale data. But I'm not able to get this done in Affinity Photo. At the moment I manage to get this is work on the complete image and on every color I use it can only be in red, green or bleu so it doesn't appear in the other channels. And only able to getting it grey in that particular channel by changing the tint in the main. This is doable with flat colors, but if a textures is complex (for example a wood-texture), this isn't that easy. So how do I edit in my channels without affecting the others and have the same tools and adjustments at hand for working only in that channel? In Photoshop, you could do level adjustments and such, on a single channel without affecting the other channels. Your color tools would automaticly change to greyscale. But how do you do it in Affinity Photo? Cheers

One of the things that really stops my workflow is that I have to go to the toolbar to determine whether or not I want to continue drawing with a curve that I have already created. But every other time I don't want this — and forget to change the mode — I have to undo my tracing work to create a new curve object or hit the divide button if my shapes are closed. This is just tedious. So I would propose that if you have a curve already selected and click on one of the nodes of the end points of the curve, you should automatically resume editing the original curve (meaning, adding the new curve segments to the original curve). If you don't have the other curve selected, Designer should assume that you don't want to continue drawing from another curve. That's how it works in Illustrator and this forgoes that you have to check the toolbar. This also makes it much easier to close curves with another curve or join two curves, because you would simply select both curves and then draw the connecting curve in between the two. No need to go to the Node tool (or hold Ctrl), select the curves and then join them after the fact.

Everytime i create more than one artboard the guide lines starting point begins from the first artboard, and as i edit the location i have to compensate the pixel distance even if i type the numbers.. and sometimes it gets back to zero, i know i must be doing somenthing worng.. Or it supposed to work this way? FullSizeRender.MOV

I know this is actually a really silly question, and I know how to do it on photoshop, but for some odd reason I'm having a VERY difficult time with my mask layers and adding shadows.... Currently my Layers look like this: I'd like to bring my Shadow layers above the background, but outside of the masked Dog 1 and 2 layers group.... Having a hard time wrapping my head around this without making additions to the mask to show the shadow layers?

After attempting to lay out some body text without reaching for my Mac I became furious with the process in Designer. This has been the case through my last 4 or 5 months with this tool. Here are a few thoughts on how it could be improved. When tapping into a text box, the interface attempts to keep the cursor in view at all times in the most jarring manner. When the on screen keyboard is up, this results in unintended jumps that make it confusing to pan and scroll the art board while editing. I would prefer that the interface either doesn’t move at all when editing the contents of a text box, or opens a content editor that takes you out of the layout completely while editing. The OS-default editing cursor doesn’t exist. This means if I want to go back, select a word, edit a word, or select a whole paragraph I need to use a confusing combination of hip-shooting exactly where I want the cursor to go with my giant fingers and selecting text without being able to control the beginning and end of the selection. Adapting to the OS-default would be great. Controls for resizing the text box and panning are still available when editing text. From a UX perspective, I would appreciate text editing being a completely isolated process especially on a device that invites fingery clumsiness. Tap the box to edit, all you can do is edit. Tap a done button, you’re back to the layout. (I’m experiencing way more ease writing this post in your little WSYWIG editor on my iPad than in Affinity D) Affinity is a great tool for comping up design ideas right on the iPad and I love it for that. But I DREAD when I have to put some text in there. Please consider these comments! Love Dan

Hi! I just did a search of the group for this and nothing came up, so forgive me if this has been brought up before. I am wondering how you keep text layers editable editable after your document has been saved ... ? I have tried saving documents as PNG, PSD and .aphoto, but none of these formats seem to allow text layers to be editable once the document has been saved and then loaded back in to Affinity Photo afterward. Is this something that Affinity simply won't do, or should I used another format? Any information on how to do this would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi, Im struggling to add points to paths I have made, In Illustrator you have the + & - tools to accomplish this. Is there a simple way in Affinity I'm sure there is a very simple solution to this,

Hallo, if i open a psd, it is not possible to change the text. (it is possible to change size etc.) In the layer it says: .... (pixel). Do I have to import in a different way. (Checkbox "PSD Text editierbar schalten" (german) is activated)? Thanks a lot for giving me a hint! Jörg

You might want to use a pixel layer as mask layer, but still be able to edit this layer and see the impact of your edits live. This is easily possible: Start with at least a background layer and a second pixel layer intended for masking add the live procedural text filter with this formula A=R, R=1, G=1, B=1 (or download preset "grey to alpha" below) Clip this live filter to the pixel layer to be used for masking Clip "pixel mask layer to be used for marking" to the background layer where you want to use it. The procedural text filter will become invisible in the layer stack, but still working. Modify the "pixel mask" layer with any pixel tool you like: brush, dodge and burn, sharpen, any adjustment or any filter At least give a "heart" or "thanks" to my post. Bonus material: If you have a mask you want to transform into a pixel layer, you can simply use the procedural text filter "alpha to gray" (see attached file). Video Tutorial: The recording did not capture the live procedural text filter. please use the settings from the picture below: Have fun Timo alpha to gray.aftoolpresets grey to alpha.aftoolpresets

I have large images with pixel shapes (representing cells) and each cell type has a certain colour (6 in total, plus black background). I need to rapidly colour-test different colours to find the best combination for visibility. I have not been able to find a solution anywhere, as most such approaches are about defining a recognisable shape and then altering colours - this is about changing many 'cells' across a large image in one go. Thanks

Hey Guys! I saw a tip from blendersecrets which I found very handy. Set an app in blender to quick edit textures. My problem: I've bought Affinity Photo from Microsoft Store. I've set Photo.exe in blender path which didn't work. So I've noticed I can't launch the app directly from microsoftapp's folder (C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\SerifEuropeLtd.AffinityPhoto\Program: photo.exe) It works just clicking in start menu or similar. I Can't find any other folder to set it in blender. *I did the process with affinity designer which I bought from serif store and It works fine.

Hi guys, i found some older topics concerning similar problems. Its all about opening PDFs with embedded fonts that are not available on the system. In our daily work we often get client logos or other vector drawings as PDF files that stil contain text as embedded fonts. Often one may use such PDF file without editing it. Just place it in your own design layout (PDF transfer: transfer). This will render and re-export the embeded fonts correctly. So far so good 🙂 But sometimes you have to edit a client logo file, e.g. to create some black/white version or adapt something else. Then you get font errors when opening the file in Affinty. In most cases the client has no other logo file and there is no chance to get the original font from the designer who created the logo. This apllies not only to logos but in many professional applications to any drawings graphic designers get from their clients. E.g. I worked in packing design for many years and had to deal with existing tray and tetra/sig designs every day. The existing designs often had to be adapted to new technical specifications. But often we got only old PDFs and somehow had to "crack" the content without having the original fonts available. In these and other cases it would be extremly helpfull if we can "vectorize" the complete PDF during the open process or in place with an extra functionality. EXAMPLE: There is an extremely helpfull functionality in Illustrator that often saved my day. You can place a PDF in an AI document and then select it. This brings up the menu functionality "transparency reduction". The trick is, to select the option "convert text to path". With this functionality you are able to convert nearly any PDF to pure vector drawings to edit them without font errors. All embedded fonts are converted to pathes correctly - even if they are not available in your system fonts. It would be so helpfull, if we could have a similar functionality in Designer and/or Publisher too 🙂 cheers P.S. The new object selection functionalities introduced in 1.9 (?) are a real timesaver and big leap forward. It's often these "little" commands, that improve quality of life when it comes to professional preprint tasks 🙂 Maybe there are some options missing: select masked / cliped / compound / empty (no properties despite the raw path) layers ? This is what typicaly remains after transparency reduction. A whole pile of nested cliped and masked layers. And with cliped layers selected it would be helpfull to "unclip" / "unmask" selected step by step and shift their content e.g. to the nearest common ancestor layer. This would be a kind of cleanup functionality for imported drawings. Afterwards all empty mask layers could be selected (no fill, no border, no...) and deleted manually. By the way - here is what this really helpfull feature looks like in Illustrator:

I had major problems getting a solution to this. Imported Idml files were imported ok but I couldn't get any tweaks done. None of the layers were editable. But I found out that if you right click on the original layer the pull down menu changes, giving you the edit options. Edit Detached was the one I was looking for. Now everything works and the fine tuning needed after import is a breeze. There should be a tutorial on this. Many gnashed teeth, much wailing and lots of time got me this solution.

I could do this in Photoshop with the gradient tool, but I can't find a way to do it in AP. I want to have a photo in a full-page ad at the top of a page to gradually fade into the copy block below it. In Photoshop, I could apply a gradient affect that would melt into transparent space at its bottom edge (or any age, for that matter). It was great for doing collages. Anyone been able to do this in AP?

When working with photos/images in Affinity Designer, (with Affinity Photo installed), there should be an easy way to launch Affinity Photo (or another chosen bitmap editor) from within Affinity Designer to edit bitmap images (beyond the photo editing capability integrated into Affinity Designer). This should be available both from the right mouse context menu and the context aware bar across the top when a bitmap image is selected. With such excellent Affinity application interoperability I am surprised this has not yet been implemented. This type of integration should also be incorporated into Affinity Publisher. Another possible interface enhancement, could be to (optionally - in preferences?) replace the Affinity Designer Pixel Persona with the Affinity Photo 'Photo Persona'. If this capability were implemented, it would still be useful to include the ability to launch Affinity Photo as a bitmap editor from within Affinity Designer, as Affinity Photo provides further capability (i.e. Liquify Persona and Tone Mapping Persona). I would love the integration of the Affinity Photo 'Photo Persona' with Affinity Designer when editing bitmap images within Affinity Designer. (Considering how these applications are designed I wouldn't be shocked if such integration were technically feasible.)

I use connected frame text for a calendar layout. Each Day is one frame text - so i can place and align each day-element individually on different calendar layouts. But... how can I edit the complete text? In InDesign I used Ctrl-Y to edit the full text in a simple text editor. How to do this in Affinity Publisher?

Hi, This is my first post and I'm a novice with Affinity Photo. I've watched all the tutorials to do with editing selections and layers, but can't seem to make the app do what I want it to. It's fairly simple and must be possible, I'm just not getting it! I have a .jpg that has been produced from a stacking program, Sequator. It contains 2 main elements, the foreground and the night sky, including the Milky Way. I want to blow the highlights and whites UP in the sky (without affecting the foreground) and reduce the highlights and whites DOWN in the foreground (without affecting the sky) - sounds simple, but I have spent hours trying to make it work and got nowhere! Please help!!

howdy :) is this a 'feature' or a #bug? with more than one photograph open, & i select & try to edit the selected image with let's say text, the edit does not occur on the selected document instead a non-selected document becomes selected & the one which is suppose to take the edit deselects. this behaviour forces affinity to not be able to work with multiple images opened at one time. is this a feature or a bug? to reiterate, with multiple photographs open, a selected photograph never takes an adjustment, instead an unselected photo (document window under selection) becomes selected to take the edit. (an unselected photograph — not the intended one — becomes selected.) any ideas? thank you in advance macos 10.13.x affinity photo 1.8.3

Hi guys Can please someone tell me how can I edit "smart object mockup" in AF? Like in this video for PS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxTge8fHbW8 All mockup's that I have are made for Photoshop so they are using smart objects to place our designs so after I open mockup and try to edit them by opening that layer in new tab like I did in Photoshop nothing happens! I simply can not find way to edit that layer in separate tab which is crucial for my work! This really makes things a very hard for me because I use mockup's all a time and I can't just use "place image" option and add more layers that I will adjust on spot, because it make things a lot harder then to just edit "smart object" like I did in PS. If you could show me how can I do this in AF, that would be a life saver! Thanks
