  1. I made some curves adjustments for AD and AP which I'd like to share with you. the attached Affinity file features embedded documents so that you can easily preview the effect of all curves on a single photo and then choose a curve that fits best/ gives you a good starting point/ idea. You can add them to your AP though opening the document, selecting each group, selecting the "curves" adj, so that it's panel opens up, click "add preset". (I've made a feature request to make that easier) You can then access them by the "view > studio > adjustments" panel which is active by default (only available in AP) please don't overdo it blend modes, opacity and blend ranges can, and should be adjusted upon your needs for more information about such techniques you can have a look over here https://affinity.ser...er-amateur-pro/ cheers PS: similar presets for the "channel mixer" are available here PS: similar presets for "LUT" adj. are available here PS: here is a great resource to really understand curves EDIT: just added some Black and White adjustments too FWIW >> curves mix.afdesign << >> BW mix.afdesign <<
  2. UPDATE: New post including macros here: https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/38379-luminosity-mask-selection-macros/ I've been experimenting with doing 'luminosity masking' with curves and blend ranges. Here's the result. Attached is a 'photo' file with three groups - just copy and paste one of these into any photo, either at the top level or as a child. Then open the group and double-click the curve to adjust just the named luminosity range (eg. 'mid tones'). As it's a curve you can also do it selectively by colour. It works by constraining the blend range on each curve. Click on the cogwheel to see this. There are three groups because I wasn't sure which way to chop up the spectrum, so I've done three ways: curved, rectangular and triangular. Please do try them and let us know here which works for you. I tried doing these as macros, but the macro system stopped me doing things like naming adjustment layers and grouping. I guess it's not mature enough yet for such actions. So I resorted to the cut-and-paste method. This forum also doesn't like you uploading .afmacros files (ahem). But if you prefer macros, I've put them on one of my websites here: http://changingminds.org/etc/affinity/Curve%20Blends%20V1.afmacros This is still in the experimental stage - please let me know what you think. Edit: Upated version in post below. Curve Blends V1.afphoto
  3. I see how to save presets for Curves, but I don't see how or where to apply them. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
  4. ...me again - I am determined to learn this software (it's actually been a blast, just have so many basic questions - thanks for your patience) With the help of MEB, Alfred, R C-R, Callum, and MANY others I have learned a lot but am certainly still in the novice category. I have a relatively simple image (1 - 2 layers) that I want to save in my AD Assets-Panel (a custom panel created for this project). I've saved/moved a number of other images into this panel previously with no problem, simple click/drag operation. However, with this particular layer I'm seeing something I haven't seen before...when I click/drag, the image seems goes to go BEHIND the Assets panel and stays there, unseen. No vertical blue-bar appears in the A-panel, and upon release of the click/drag, the image does appear (or 'stick') in with other Assets. Anyone know why I would see this behavior? One additional Assets related query: what is the trick/procedure to assure the reasonable sizing of an image before dragging it into the Assets-panel so that it is not EXTREMELY LARGE when I access it for use on a newly opened image? Yet another basic skill that I'm 99.9% sure I've missed along the way. Cheers! Hope y'all have a great weekend. -Christo
  5. Thanks in advance friends... ...when flattening into a single pixel layer, do I first need to rasterize the grouped layers? Not sure how to do this, i.e, I'm unclear on the steps involved, and the proper order in which to perform them. A brief walk-thru would be greatly appreciated. FYI - I am wanting to manipulate the Flat image (bend, curve around a cylindrical surface such as a large barrel or a utility pole, alter perspective and/or viewing angle, stretch by pulling/moving nodes independently of each other, etc). greateful for your help, -Christo
  6. I wrote this on twitter and was recommended to do it here, so let's have fun. I wonder if it would be possible to have a Curve editor for the saturation as in Davinci Resolve. It's very powerful and easy to use and could speed things up to control saturation by their luminance level without going to masks. Of course, their other curves are very useful too without the need to touch sliders or masks but the Luma makes desaturate the shadows and highlights a breeze. Thanks and keep up the great work you do!
  7. 1. Is there any way to constrain the movement of the handles, (e.g. 45°) when editing the nodes? 2. Is there anyway to select different curves by dragging the tool instead of clicking on each curve when using the node tool? Thanks for the help
  8. 3 suggestions. Firstly, when deleting nodes, AD should try to keep the original curve. The current algorithm leaves a almost straight line between the two remaining points. This makes cleaning up curves much easier (since the couture function is a bit node crazy.) Secondly Node alignments. I was doing an organigram chart and a quick align nodes would have helped a lot to work more quickly and cleanly. I could try guidelines but for this function it can slow things down a bit. Thirdly, nodes welding. The way that nodes join is not good, when I break open a curve where it intersects with it's self it will not weld any of the open points unless they were welded before. Very keen to see how this software develops forward, enjoying the current version already.
In this Affinity Photo Tutorial, I show you how to create a text with a clip mask on a portrait. 10. Hi, I am another user interested in Affinity Photo as an alternative to Photoshop. I have been familiarizing and playing with it after installing the beta version for Windows on my computer. Overall it is OK. It is somewhat different from Photoshop and this will require me to go through some learning, all of which is fair and expected. A part from bugs that need fixing, I think there is space for better implementation of some functions some of which are being reported in this forum. I am adding one myself for the Curves function (under Tones in the Develop Persona). Unless I am missing something, in its current implementation the curves function of Affinity allows to place and move points in the curve but does not show the values of the input and output coordinates of the points. This makes very difficult (in fact, almost impossible) to exactly reproduce a similar curve profile on different photos. Photoshop not only shows the input and output values of each selected point of a curve, but also allows to directly enter such values in the corresponding fields without having to drag each point. Also, similar to Photoshop, I think that showing a curve and its corresponding hystogram overlapped in the same graph helps to much better evaluate the effect of modifying a curve. I hope this and other practical improvements will be implemented in Affinity to make its current and already quite impressive set of features even stronger. Regards, Marco Debiasi
  11. Hi, in diesem Tutorial Affinity Photo Bildoptimierung Skulptur zeige ich wie man eine Steinskulptur in Szene setzen kann. Dabei spielen Gradationskurven und das Licht eine besondere Rolle. Viel Spaß dabei In this Affinity Photo Tutorial, I show you how to optimize a sculpture of stone. I use especially curves and light. Have fun Ciao Jack Link to YouTube Tutorial Foto / photo: eigenes
  12. In Draw Plus I used to be able to do some image manipulation from text converted to curves. (Unfortunately I cannot upload an example as it will not open with Affinity.) The steps were: insert image add art text above image select both and crop to shape convert to curves with node tool pull the curves around. This left a graphic which could be manipulated in such a way that curves could be pulled around. Where the outside edge of the letter was pulled across the flood colour was pulled across. If the edge was pulled over one of the other letters, the coloured area of the second letter would go white, and if you continued pulling past the letter, colour would appear again. So far, I am unable to do this with Affinity. The closest I have come is to do the above steps 1 and 2, then to Mask to below. The letters are then filled with the image below, and can be converted to curves, but the behaviour at this point does not replicate that of Draw Plus. The edges can be pulled out, but the interaction with the other letters, specifically the white where another letter is crossed, does not occur. I've tried Please can anyone help? I use this design tool a lot in graphics. Many thanks. Jerry
  13. Hello everyone I recently got Affinity designer after years of Illustrator. I love the program but am still getting the hang of it. Can anyone tell me how I can get the curves I want whilst using the pen tool? Just like on Illustrator, I click once with the pen to create a point. I click again to create the next point. The line path from point A to point B has a really wonky curve and is not at all what I want. This mainly happens when I'm drawing clouds or trees. I can't seem to get the perfect line and curves that I want without using the node tool to edit my lines or just using smart mode. Dragging the mouse doesn't help me to get the curves or shape I want either. Is this just the way Affinity works or is there some setting that I am unaware of? i'd really appreciate any advise here! Thanks so much :)
  14. In the attached screenshot I am trying to merge the red box and the blue line. My purpose is so that I can then select and move one of the side nodes and have all three protruding lines stay connected to it. Using the join curves button doesn't seem to accomplish this and using the combine function removes the blue line entirely. In Illustrator creating a new path off of another one automatically merges them – in Designer it creates a new curve on top, which is keeping me from making the shape I need :( Is there a way to combine these curves the way I described? Thanks!
  15. Hello, and thank you for Affinity Photo; the world needs more alternatives to you-know-what and Affinity has some great features. Some observations about plugins, some may have been mentioned before. The plugin image preview is not color managed, making it difficult to adjust color. Dropdowns on the plugin UI (with FilterMeister plugins anyway) only show two menu items; the arrow keys must be used to scroll down. I do not see a progress bar after the filter is displayed. And I have had two crashes so far on opening plugins, which previously opened. Here are some plugins to work with at http://www.russellcottrell.com/photo/RCFilters.htm The curves dialog needs to show the input and output values for the selected point. This is especially important for the center point of Lab’s a and b curves. Also, could HSB/HSL mode be added? Congratulations on the HDR merge feature; the .exr output file is the highest quality that I have seen, much better than that of the well-known HDR programs. When merging .tifs (rather that raw files so the camera .dcp profile can be applied first), all other programs that I have tried produce very noisy shadows, often unusable, when opened in applications such as SNS-HDR. (Nothing against your tone-mapping per se but SNS-HDR is the best.) The Affinity .exr’s are high-quality, fully usable. But I have run into a few problems; several of the images I merged had artifacts, little vertical colored lines in the output. And the output files do not look the same when trying to merge them into a panorama with PTGui; the exposure and color balance vary, even with images identically exposed and raw processed (in RawTherapee). I don’t know if this is inevitable or not; I have not had images of this high quality to work with before. Also, could the New HDR Merge dialog save the last used settings (alignment, ghosts, noise reduction, tone map)? Lastly, being able to export files as .psb would be useful. Thank you again . . . . —Russell
  16. Hello, this lines/curves anti-aliasing thing was probably reported multiple times but I thought i make a vid on it jsut in case. Cheers! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22340015/Curves%20Problem.mp4
  17. When using a curve masked to a specific area to adjust the brightness values of skin tones this causes the saturation values to increase, so it is necessary clip a HSL desaturation adjustment to it to bring the values back in line. I have tried every combination of clipping and masking these two adjustment layers together with no success. In PS this is the core of beauty photography retouching. Passing the adjustment down through clipping is a standard behavior of adjustment layers clipped to another adjustment layer with mask. Here are screenshots with all the attempts in the layer tabs as well as the Ps example. If there is a workaround please let me know. Thanks Kyle
  18. Will Affinity Photo ever be able to handle curves in the way that Photoshop does? For example in PS I can add different input and output on eachof the nodes on the curve Affinity Photo doesn't seem to have this function. Neither does it seem to have any way of importing .acv curve files into AP curves. It seems odd that AP doesn't have these functions as the freely available Gimp does. If you look at the attached Screen Grab from PS each of the nodes on the curve has separate in and out values and previously saved curves can be imported and applied.
  19. Hi, Imagine the following scenario shown in this screenshot: Basically, I have 3 separate curves that make up the following grid: OOOOOOOO X------- XBBBBBBB I want to join O and X by "uniting" them (i.e. selecting them both and clicking on the "Addition" icon in the toolbar). What I expect is to get a reverse L shape consisting of 6 anchors, i.e.: MMMMMMMM M------- MBBBBBBB However, what I get is the following: There is this stray anchor (inside the red circle) that somehow breaks this merged shape. If I remove it, it looks like this: I'm never able to join those 2 curves into one. I tried selecting anchors of both curves and clicking on "Close curve"/"Connect curve" (inside the Action bar), but they don't seem to have an effect. I'm sure I misunderstand how curves and anchors work together, if you could help me here and point me towards some resources to better understand them, that would be greatly appreciated! EDIT I just noticed that at the encircled section, there are actually 2 anchors on top of each other (I just deleted them both when I selected them by dragging a selection rectangle around them). If I move one anchor away, I get this: What would be the proper way to merge this two curves?
  20. Hi there, Question: in my workflow, I usually tweak masks by using curves or levels. The curve then becomes a sort of expand-contract for the black-white values, which is pretty helpful for quick tweaks. Is there a way to do the same in AP? If I have a mask, say with a feathered circle, and I create a curve, AP creates a new curve adjustment. At first, I thought I could simply move the curve adjustment as a mask children, but it seems it doesn't affect the mask. Now I'm not even sure if this worked in the initial release and perhaps is broken in the current one (1.5.0.39) Any thought? Best, Andrew
  21. 22. Would be great to have handles snapping to grid and guides.
  23. Hi. I've been experimenting with the latest (.26) Affinity Designer RC the past few days and have a recurring issue where AD crashes while I am drawing complex curves with the pen. It seems to usually happen after I've drawn and copied a curve several times, and then try to draw another one connected to those. Situations like in the image below. I didn't notice this happening on the previous RC but I also didn't use it nearly as much as this one. I'm using: Win 10 64 bit core i5-4690S with integrated intel GPU 16 gb ram ssd Love the program, can't wait for the final release!
  24. Hello, I drew a pair of spectacles with the curve tool. I started with the outline of the frame, then i drew each of the lenses. Now I want to fill it with colour, so that only the frame is coloured while the lenses stay transparent - like glasses are. But instead of only the frame the whole space is filled, including the lenses. I tried several approaches, but no one did work. How can I do it right? I'm new in AD. Maybe the solution is super easy, but in the moment in can't see it. File is attached Thank you. Brille.afdesign
