  1. Is there a way to convert a Pen Tool path you make into a selection. There is a selection from layer I can do, but I would like to just convert the path into a selection, without having to create extra layers.
  2. Here's a thread from 2014... It's crazy to think that you would have implemented this by now (2022) unless you're going the Reason Studios route, "We know what you need, you don't!" unless I'm missing something....
  3. The functionality to switch between artistic and frame text would be a great addition to Designer... Illustrator's implementation of doing this (double click a specific node on a text object, or right click > convert to...) is a perfect example on how it should be handled. Here's a thread with a whole bunch of other people wanting this as well.
  4. I think the default shortcut for the Convert to Curve(Ctrl/CMD Return) is problematic. Many people accidentally do that while editing text and don't notice until later. I saw multiple complains on social media. Though it can be changed in the Preferences, the default shortcut need to be reconsidered.
  5. Granted it took Adobe something like 20 years to put this feature into Illustrator, so I'm not expecting this to appear overnight, but is there a way to convert between these two kinds of text types?
  6. I want a shortcut for this feature options: _ Additional Suggestion: If you click using the Node Tool, it could convert the node mode to the next one in a cycle conversion order. or make that a new tool: "Node converter"
  7. [Designer] Hi, Is there another way to convert nodes, other than going to the Pen or Node Tool's Contextual (horizontal) Toolbar, and pressing buttons? Like, shortcuts for: Convert to Sharp or Smooth node? Or Reverse Curve? I already have keyboard shortcuts for Close and Break Curve – whose toolbar buttons are right beside the Convert ones. But those are the only Pen or Node Tool shortcuts I could find in the Prefs. Two related things I would love: - A way to 'pull' Control Handles out of a sharp node (or pop them back in to make a sharp point), via some modifier key(s) with the node tool. (Like: after-the-fact editing of a path, not while drawing it.) and - When you're manipulating one of a node's Control Handles, for a certain modifier key(s) to cause its opposing handle do the exact same thing – i.e., stay in perfect symmetry/mirror image. Including, on a non-smooth node, the control handle angle. That would be _so_ handy! (It's available with 3rd party Illustrator plugins) Thanks for your attention! - pbass
  8. Hello - I have a basic question: In the past, when I was still working with Photoshop, I always had to convert RGB images used in a file for printing to CMYK in Photoshop beforehand. If I didn't do that, I always got a call from prepress that RGB images were in PDF X3, and that it wouldn't work that way. But I have also had the experience that this did not cause any problems. (I can also open the Affinity Designer file in Affinity Photo. But there I can't find a way to convert a single image to CMYK). Can you guys give me an answer on this? Thanks a lot - Marc
  9. I was doing some research today, looking for a low cost or free solution to create vector files from png & jpg files on the latest Mac OS, and one that works with Designer. I thought I'd share my results, as some of the most recent recommendations I could find on this seem to be a little out of date. I've especially seen this list a few places, but a few of the options there seem to be obsolete now: I should probably mention I'm using a Mac on Monterey (12.2.1). I will not be using this to make vector paintings out of photos or anything like that. I occasionally need to convert clients' logos from whatever low-res png or jpeg they have available to vector, that's my main use case. I also sometimes need to convert hand drawn sketches. I tested using a 250x250px and a 500x500px version of this logo, designed to have lots of thin pointy bits that tracing software has a hard time with: What didn't work for me (Obsolete, couldn't download, too expensive, etc): Potrace - An old script? command line tool that many other software apps seem to use. I'm pretty good with geeky stuff, but using command line to do this was a bit over my head without help, and the links to tutorials that I tried on their page are defunct now. DragPotrace - downloaded from the Japanese page linked. Even though the MacOS version they offer is from 8/2021, my OS wouldn't let me install it. Intaglio Vectorize - I wish I could try it, but the developer seems to have closed up shop. The links provided elsewhere here take you to a site with the correct name, but I couldn't get to any kind of software info or download screen. Just a bunch of blog posts. Super Vectorizer - Chrome wouldn't allow me to download the free trial (came up with a security warning of some sort), so nope. Autotrace - no updates on that page since 2004. I didn't see enough info to make me want to try it. Vector Magic - downloaded and used their trial successfully. It looks great! But it's too expensive for my needs, and the free version doesn't give you anything usable (understandable, of course). Honorable mentions: Photopea.com (free) - I wasn't too interested in the online converters. I didn't want to create an account for something I would only use occasionally, and I don't want to go uploading my clients' logos to a bunch of websites without figuring out terms and how they would store them. That said, Photopea looked promising so I tried a test logo. The results were pretty poor with the low res photo, high-res was ok. Couldn't copy and paste into Designer, but exporting as svg brought the nodes in for me. Possibly worth a try if your project doesn't have a bunch of text with small lines? Vectornator (free) - I really wanted this to work, but the trace results were pretty terrible on the low-res version, and not too great on the high-res version of my test logo. Copying and pasting just brought the image into designer, no nodes. That said, it did work and it may have done a better job with something like a photo or a graphic without text or thin lines. It's also free and has lots of other features, so maybe worth a try? What did work: Inkscape for Mac (free) - I've tried the Inkscape route before, and ended up with a bunch of files (including XQuartz) on my machine and not much to show for it (couldn't get tracing to work well for me). So I hesitated to use it. But there's a new version with an actual mac installer. I tried the trace bitmap feature, and after playing with the many options I produced pretty good results from the low res logo using multiple scans and the Grays option. Couldn't get it to copy and paste into Designer. The svg I exported opened strangely, but with nodes available in Designer. Results from Low-res logo: Image Vectorizer ($4.99) - I really hesitated with this one. It's an old app, the website's copyright goes to 2015, and it hasn't been updated in the app store for 6 years. But I saw lots of good mentions here on the forum, so I thought I'd try it. It worked! Quick and easy, 2.5 MB (super lightweight), and no problems running in Monterey so far. The higher-res logo looked pretty great on the default settings. Low-res results would take some tweaking in the settings and maybe in Designer. And there's a copy to clipboard button that allows you to paste into Designer, nodes and all. Works great! Worth the $5. Results from high-res logo: Bottom-line: Neither solution is perfect, so I'll still be very happy when Serif is ready to unleash their version on the world! Image Vectorizer is fast and easy to use and does a solid job. Inkscape does a much better job, but it's a slower process that involves some playing around to get things looking well. So for now, I'll probably use Image Vectorizer whenever possible for ease of use, and pull out Inkscape when an image is more challenging. Hope all this craziness helps someone!
  10. Advice me,pls, how to convert image (like an icon, symbol) into 256-color palette exactly? And use Windows Standard palette? I use Affinity Photo.
  11. I have Affinity 1.10 ... My old Adobe Creative Suite CS3 software (which I had to reinstall) apparently can't be activated. I'm getting activation prompts, but apparently all the activation acceptance on the Adobe website is gone. So, with the days falling away (30 days to activate), I suppose I only have 22 days left to use my old Adobe Creative Suite software. How can I begin opening some of my InDesign Files in Affinity (and convert them to the new format) so I can keep on publishing and leave Adobe behind (more of less)?
  12. I can't find a way to do this. I'm sure it's something ridiculously simple... but just can't figure it out. Please help!
  13. Hi everybody, I've searched for a similar question but I haven't found it. It's even difficult to express the topic exactly in a title. I hope I did nothing wrong and that I'll make myself clear as this is not my language. I'm painting some boards in Affinity Photo. I have to make 31 and I have to put 90 different labels on each for a total of 2790 different labels. Data merge feature in Publisher will help me populate the labels quickly. The problem is that I can't find a way to import them in Photo (and I'm not that much into Publisher yet). Actually I have found several ways but not the practical one I'm looking for, since Publisher cannot export pages separately in Affinity format, while importing an .afpub into Photo won't give you the chance to separate pages as you can do with PDFs. I came up with this: Dragging/placing the .afpub file in Photo document will show only one page. To have all the 90 labels displayed I should duplicate the layer 89 times and select the right page for each. Too long to repeat 2790 times. Copying/pasting every page in a new group in Photo would be at last as long as the previous method. Exporting every page in a raster format would prevent any further edit. It's not that I really need it, but if I'd need I should go back to Publisher and export/import again. Also I'd prefer to deal with text and shapes until the end. A more viable approach would be to export every single page in PSD format, but having to rely on an external file type instead of the proprietary one sounds cumbersome to me. Also there could be inconsistencies too. Any ideas on how to import quickly all Publisher document's pages into Photo as individual embedded documents or groups?
  14. There's this tutorial here on how to convert Procreate Brushes (working as of this date) to Affinity Brushes. It involves unarchiving the Procreate Brushset into it's respective Brush files / folders. In each folder is a PNG file (commonly "shape.png"). It's that file that is used and converted for use in Affinity Designer. Here (my examples) they are imported as "Intensity" Brushes: I've used this technique quite a bit. What I've also found depending on HOW you convert the image you get different results as well as possibilities. Example a Floral Brush: Using GIMP (Or the Photo Editor of your choice (not sure how to do this using Affinity Photo). I select by color, Shrink the selection (Play with the settings), delete the selection and get the following result. One is the direct result. The other is the colors inverted (one with a black border, the other with a white border): Using this method, I get results that give very different possibilities when using Styles and Layers to overlap the end results: Worth playing around with. Here's (attached) two AFD files to show you more clearly the possibilities. The first uses "Select by Color", "Selection / Shrink" the second uses "Select" (which just selects the surrounding exterior not "Select by Color" as above and "Selection / Grow" (Play with the settings). Enjoy. fleur9_9a_x2_a_Color_AFD.afdesign fleur9b_9c_x2_b_Color_AFD.afdesign
  15. UPDATE: Using Windows Designer 1.9 on a capable laptop. I have a designer document whose page size is 8.5 x 11. The document has two groups of objects, each measuring 3.5 x 5". I want to convert each of these objects to its own artboard. So I choose the first group and with the Artboard tool, choose Selection and Insert Artboard in the context menu. Artboard1 is created with the group as expected. When I repeat this procedure with the second group, Artboard2 is double the width of the object (i.e., the size it would be with both objects) and covers both objects, although the group from Artboard1 in the layers palette is not part of this new artboard. I don't think this is expected behavior. Anyone else?
  16. Hi, what is the best way to convert rgb images to cmyk for print with Affinity Photo? Thanks
  17. The result of color conversion from RGB to CMYK with perceptual intent(second picture) doesn't look good. Compared to Photoshop, too much shadow part that lost detail. Conversion with relative intent(first picture) is good enough though...
  18. Can you convert from color to grayscale and/or black/white in Affinity Designer and/or Photo? This is very helpful for designing for the very few people who cannot see color in checking for background/foreground contrast.
  19. Hi, I am looking for free presets to use with AP. Is there a place/site to get that? Have been working with presets for years now in LR and have a lot of them but since I jumped from LR to AP I am out of presets and can’t use my more than hundred presets. Or is there maybe a way to transform LR presets to Affinity Photo. I am not using LUTs much because its not as powerful as presets. (Basically, a LUT targets a narrower set of image parameters to change (color and tone). A preset, on the other hand, can adjust a much wider range of image parameters, things like exposure, sharpening and vignetting. … ) Thanks. WITH LIGHTROOM PRESET ORIGINAL PIC.
  20. When converting to EPS I will often get a white background that can not be cleared on many elements. Text is the most problematic. This is causing issues as I need to be able to convert my file for an AI end user, and all editable conversions have inadequate outcomes. I have attached the AD files for you to look at and one example of the poor output. Buff Circ New Logo- Black 4.0.afdesign White buafflo new.afdesign
  21. Hi all I am fairly new to affinity designer and this kind of software on general. I drew a shape using the pencil tool and without realizing what expand stroke does I selected it. Is there a way to undo this? I tried selecting all and converting to curves and I tried using the divide option but so far nothing. Thanks!
  22. Is there a simple way to convert a straight line segment into a curved one with smooth nodes, without affecting the neighbour segments? See the screenshot for clarification. In Inkscape I would click on segment BC with the node tool and choose "Make selected segments curves" and then "Make selected nodes smooth".
  23. Hi, I'm placing an SVG file in Designer and try to convert to curves, but the menu item is disabled. This works perfectly with the same file in PagePlus X9. what am I doing wrong? Greetings, Sigurd
  24. Hello Is this possible in Affinity Designer? I can't find any settings. Thank you.
  25. I have a jpg-picture where I want to change colors, but how do I split the photo into shapes? I.e. how do I convert the jpg to vector-format.
