  1. Hi everyone. For some reason, moving even a single artboard around with a couple of shapes and text layers in it is pretty slow and lags a lot. My system specs are the following: Intel Core i9-9900K, AMD RX 580 8GB, 32GB RAM, NVMe SSD 512GB, running macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and Affinity 1.10.1. Metal acceleration is fully supported and I’m getting good numbers in all kind of benchmarks and other apps, but artboards in Affinity Designer seem to be very slow for me. Tried all settings, Metal, OpenGL, OpenGL (Basic). Metal seems to be the fastest out of all (as it should be I suppose), but still not acceptably fast. It feels like 5-10 fps which is strange to me. Situation shown on video became even worse when moving group of artboards. I should mention that any other actions I do in Affinity Designer are remarkably fast and smooth (after many years of using Adobe apps). Color corrections, transforms, vector tools all of these are just flying. But artboards... Here’s a quick screen recording I made. You can also see detailed CPU and GPU load during performing this operation. I’m also attaching project file. Appreciate your thoughts and opinions. Artboards.mov Performance Analysis.afdesign
  2. Are the affinity products for PC optimized for either Intel or AMD? Or, for any particular GPU??
  3. Framing budget: Max €3500, preferably under €2500. I’m planning on buying a new PC, and would like to take advantage of GPU acceleration in the Affinity suite, and also get great performance with DaVinci Resolve (free Windows version) for video editing. My current setup is so old (bought in February 2013, Intel Core i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50 GHz; Win 10 Pro; 16 GB RAM; GeForce GTX 660) that GPU acceleration isn’t available in the Affinity suite, and DaVinci Resolve runs painfully slow. I have my eyes on the new Acer ConnectD 300 (Intel Core i7-10700 CPU @ 2.9 GHz (turbo 4.8 GHz); Win 10 Pro; 32 GB RAM; GeForce RTX 3070), which in Sweden will cost about €2100. Would that be an excellent and price worthy choice? Why, or why not? Or should I go for a custom built setup? And should I then go for AMD or Intel as CPU, and which CPU/GPU combo gives most bang for the buck? Any other considerations, such as motherboard, RAM, SSD, etc? Is CUDA support important, or is OpenCL/OpenGL support enough? If someone has a parts list for a custom built PC to share, that would be very much appreciated – and probably of great help to others too!
  4. Hello The problem: I have have had Affinity Designer for 1 year now i think, but had not used it for a while. Came back to 1.7.1 version and the program felt a bit slow. I did update to 1.7.2 and still have this issue, With slow i mean, every time i used the view tool, the screen felt like, it was moving with a 0.1sec delay (huge smoothign effect) same goes for selection tool when selecting an area or simply moving objects, Bigger files around 50-60 MB are even worse sadly. What i tried: I tried looking into the performance settings and found the cause, which is the Nvidia GPU render option. I use laptop so i tried integrated card: Intel HD 630 and it started working pretty smooth, but has weird lag spikes from time to time. What may be the cause for the software to slower down on Nvidia GPU? First i thought i may have throttling issues, but i have undervolted my CPU and the laptop never reaches more than 42* temp. My laptop specs: Dell XPS 15 9570 CPU: Intel i7 - 7850h GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 TI - Max Q edition Ram: 32Gb In short, the Intel Graphics work better which should not be like that and any help is appriciated
  5. Hi everyone....hope this finds you well! Recent development on my end. Brushes usage has gotten really buggy and is causing CPU overload, memory jumps and slow performance. Also Designer is leaking memory after closing the program. Everything was fine a couple days ago and I haven't changed anything I can think of. I will select a brush and color and when I try and bracket up the brush size things begin to fail. In some brush sets the brush I've selected will deselect itself and default to another brush, in others I select a brush change size or color-brush deselects, in all CPU will jump and about 30 secs later I'll see my stroke. Impossible to use. All other brushes unless at a very small pixel width are also causing the same problems. i5-4960K @ 3.5Ghz, 16GB DDR3 Ram, Win 8.1 64 bit x64 based processor, MSI GTX 970, LG Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 and a small Dell monitor or a Vizio Tv as second monitor. ( I switched out the tv this morning to make sure it was not somehow the problem). I ran memtest a few weeks ago and all is fine. Anyone else having these problems? Any suggestions before I jump off my roof? Thanks!
  6. Hello I understand Affinity Photo can benefit from the usage of a GPU, I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M since it's a laptop. My question is, to ascertain that software does is working with the GPU, should I select the GPU selection in the Affinity Photo Preference Menu in the Performance Tab?, should I assign it directly in the Nvidia control panel? or should I do both things? Thank you
  7. Hey guys, I just got a new video card (gtx 1060, my old one was a gtx 750), got a new case (antec 302) which has 2 huge coolers (as opposed to my old case, which had only one small cooler), and switched to windows 10 (was using windows 7 until now). I noticed that if I keep Affinity opened for a few hours, the fans start going crazy at some point, and the cpu temperature goes over 60 degrees Celsius. I know that's not a lot, but my cpu temp barely hits 50 when playing counter strike go for example, so going to 62-63 seems a bit unnatural. When I close Affinity, everything goes back to normal immediately (32-33 degrees Celsius). Why does this happen, and is this normal? Thanks, Chris
  8. I have been using Affinity Photo since beta and have recently run into a problem with performance. I noticed this slightly at the beginning of this year and it has become worse as the year has gone on. Once I reach a certain number of layers (7-9) or apply a specific layer adjustment (such as motion blur) it begins to excessively use my cpu. This causes large slow downs and forces me to try and find alternative methods of editing in Affinity. I tried reinstalling without success and have the latest version of all software. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this and/or has a solution. I have attached an image as an example. Once I added the motion blur, the cpu usage skyrocketed. I am using a 2017 MacBook Pro (regret buying) with 16gb ram. 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 Radeon Pro 560 4096 MB Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB
  9. Just thought I'd mention that I noticed a lot of warm air blowing out of the side of my laptop today so checked Windows Task Manager. I was surprised to see such a high level of CPU activity, even when AD was minimised. The percentage of CPU activity was constantly changing whilst observing the Task manager. I had several combinations of files open during this work session but have since closed them and restarted AD (beta 1.6.3.103). This has cleared the idling CPU activity to 0%. Unfortunately I can't replicate the issue again at the moment.
  10. Hey guys, I have a question regarding the performance of Affinity Designer using only a CPU. Working with large and complex files, really slows down my AD and im wondering if a graphics card would solve that problem, so I thought maybe i ask you guys here with more experience. My current specs are the following: Windows 10 Pro 64bit Intel i7-7700 @ 3.60 GHz 32GB RAM AD Version 1.5.3.69 So my AD is currently running only over the CPU and I thought maybe adding a GPU would increase the performance but after reading some topics in this forum I became a bit sceptical if this would improve my performance. Is it true that a GPU would only have a little impact on my experience? Or are these problems generally existent in the windows version? Unfortunatly I can't provide a example file due to corporate privacy guidelines.
  11. I am just looking into purchasing your product and I am also getting a 10" Windows Tablet. I see on your requirements page that you suggest Windows 10 64bit and 4GB RAM. Will the Intel® Atom™ x5-Z8550 Processor (2.40GHz 2MB) the 4.0GB LPDDR3 with Windows 10 Pro 64 have enough processor performance to make me happy with your software? (Looking at the Lenovo Yoga Book, 10" 2-in-1 tablet with Halo keyboard) Or will I be disappointed with the performance? if I will be disappointed, what minimum CPU do you require? Also, I have a desktop at home and will travel with he new Windows 10 tablet. Can I install Affinity on both with one license since I am the only user and will be using only one machine at a time?
  12. Copy n paste from the latest beta thread: Apparently others have been experiencing the same thing.
  13. As i am trying to learn Affinity Photo, I'm running into situations where it feels the app has frozen, but i am waiting for Photo to finish some processing. There needs to be an indicator that something is happening. I see that some of the tools and processes cover the screen with a progress bar. This is a bit heavy handed, but it needs to be present for every situation where the user is forced to wait. I recommend a less intrusive version of it, as well (covering the whole screen is too much).
  14. Hello, I'm looking into a possible upgrade for my system and I was thinking to left the GPU out of it becauseI have an amd radeon 7850 1GB and it is still a good enough GPU (entry for gaming, but still strong overall). But since I don't know how and how much does affinity utilize the GPU I'm not sure if this is the right way to go, or should I upgrade my GPU with the rest of the system? Does it matter for affinity? (as far as I'm consern 7850 is close to a more modern radeon 460, so I have to get a GPU from 470 and above to make any difference)
  15. All, I am building a new Windows 10 pc for photo editing and shoot mostly in raw and am trying to work out the following for affinity photo. 1. Is there any advantage in using INTEL cpu over AMD? 2. Is there any benefit going from SSD do m.2 SSD and the speed that can be obtained through them? 3. Do any particular graphics cards offer benefits over other types IE Quadro vs GTX? 4. I am looking at getting a 27 inch monitor (maybe 32) is there any real world benefit for going to (IPS) 4k over WQHD? Any thoughts please? Thank you Al
  16. I think I have spotted a bug. After an HDR Merge (3 images at 42MP), AP beta sticks at 100% CPU usage. I waited for more than a minute, but it kept on at 100% After saving the result to a file, CPU usage dropped back to the normal 2-3% (for an idle application). Hardware: Retina MacBook Pro @ 2.6GHz (16GB RAM), with an external 27" Dell monitor attached Check the screenshot.
  17. Photographer and computer nerd here - How does Affinity Photo process information? While making edits to raw files in the "Develop Persona", I've noticed the fans of my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro spin up like jet engines. Does Affinity Photo rely heavily on CPU speed/RAM speed or is it heavily multithreaded? Does more cores = faster responses to adjustments? or do faster clock speeds lead to faster responses? I am curious because (as I said before) my 2012 rMBP is beginning to show its age when editing the raw files I give to the Develop Persona and, with the advent of the newer MBPs, I was hoping to get an idea of what machine would be best to purchase to get the best performance with the smallest form factor without emptying my wallet completely

I know that I get a low limit pc configuration, though I was curious how are the limits about my configuration
  19. hey guys, like many others, i am following the Affinity software with great intrest. I work daily in Photoshop (heavy photo manipulation with high ress photo's and a lot of layers, brushes, filters, etc) and Illustrator (cartoon logos). Soon, i am going to leave the Mac platform and move over to Windows for a better hardware configuration. With the good news that Affinity is working on a Windows release. So maybe, i will be a part of this family! I am planning my new configuration for a long time now and my focus at this moment is a fast i7-6 core (5820k), 64gb mem, M2 SSD + SSD for scratch only, and a very fast GPU (GTX 980ti) for all kind of processes like live preview / rendering in adobe premiere and after effects. Photoshop does benefit from Cuda as well. I am not sure if Illustrator uses Cuda for zooming and panning. My question for Affinity is: 1) Is there any GPU support in Photo and Designer, if yes, is this OpenCL based or is there CUDA involved? 2) what is the sweet spot in cores? I know Photoshop has an sweet spot of 6 cores. 3) Is Affinity a memory hungry tool? I am planning 64gb of memory. kind regards, Roy
  20. Hi, I can't seem to use Affinity photo anymore, I can get so far with lots and lots of lag time, spinning wheel etc and I finally finished a photo and went to export and it completely stops responding. I have tried reseting the default settings, I have rum my mac through first aid, no problems. I have restarted it. I have increased the RAM usage setting in Af as per someones suggestion. Nothing works. I am not very tech savvy so I don't know what else to do. This is now constant and never ending. It has become unusable. Its funny because it used to be fine??? Can anybody help me please. I have attached a screen shot of the computer system I am using ...but like I said it used to work fine. Also when my CPU goes through the roof there is nothing else open except Activity monitor. I am using Ox S El Capitan 10.11.3

  22. Greetings to the forum, I've been using the trial versions of both Designer and Photo until yesterday when I purchased both full versions .. INCREDIBLY AWESOME replacements to the big cumbersome apps of the past. But .. I have a question. I'm using Designer to work on a .pdf file which has now been saved as an .afdesign file, and there are 'many many' layers. The program felt a little slow while I was doing a move, and Designer locked up fo a while ... so while waiting I checked in my Activity Monitor to see whether I was running out of RAM (6 total, only using 4, not ideal but not bad), then did a terminal: "top -n 10 -o cpu" to see how busy the CPU was .. I saw that no matter what was going on, Affinity Designer was never using more than 100%, which was a little ODD .. I have an 8 core 2008 Mac Pro, which while admittedly old, usually shows most programs using 500 or 600% when they start to get thirsty for processing power like this. I'd like to know if Designer is able to use multiple CPU cores, and if so, what's going on with my setup? (EDIT: Just noticed that sometimes it uses more than one core (saw some 455% here and there), but when it's doing a big move of curves, Designer only uses 1 core .. does this make sense?) I have a Mac Pro 3,1 2 x 2.8 ghz Quad-Core Xeon .. running the latest of ElCapitan 10.11.1 I only have 6 gigs of 800 mhz DDR2 installed as they're crazy expensive still due to all the cooling and mac certification etc.
  23. This is absurdity! I will describe it briefly, because my English is bad. I wanted to merge objects (it was 31 objects) - it still takes longer than 10 minutes! I still waiting for effect ... I look to monitor activity, and there .. Check it screenshot. More than 26GB of memory usage?!?! My iMac Mini has 16GB. It's probably a bug or..? - how about that? When I finish this post it's now 20 minutes and still nothing. I guess I'll have to reset the AD. Any ideas? Btw, other programs and functions work flawlessly at that time. Cheers!
  24. I've posted about this before (in another area of the app), and I just came across it again in the latest beta (from a few days ago): If you leave open the Color Picker it will start sucking CPU cycles. I checked in Activity Monitor and PCU usage was 100% for AD, even though I had walked away from the computer, leaving only the Color Picker palette open (after right clicking on a layer to change the layer's color).
  25. Have the latest AD beta. Worked on a design for a while, left it in the background, and after a while noticed the fans raging while simply browsing the web. Attached is an Activity Monitor CPU usage screen grab, for you reference... Running on 2011 2.2 Ghz i7MacBook Pro 8Gb Ram, SSD + HD (non-fusion) Here is a link to the AD native file: http://mbx.cm/t/saiWk
