  1. Hello, is there a plan to advance the brush options like they are in Photoshop? Regards, Martin
  2. Hi, "reset brushes" button seems to work fine, but I have got info that it doesn't: failed to restore brushes.afphoto failed to restore brushes.afphoto
  3. Thank you for the surprisingly quick release of Photo Beta for Windows! I have a few questions / comments on RAW editing as a heavy user of Photoshop and its upstream ACR workspace. While I like that Serif actually chose a common interface for traditional photo-retouching / compositing as well as RAW developing there's also features I miss right away. Photoshop's RAW development allows for global editing of image properties – pretty much in the way the Develop Persona works. That way one can raise the exposure or increase contrast – changes do apply to the whole image. Apart from that one may use any combination of tools for non-destructive brush based operations, as well as graduated filters. The impact of any contributing tool may get changed at any point in time. Even after bringing the edited RAW image into the main PS application as a smart object and having worked for hours in a composition, one can still go back and each and any global, operation as well as brush based RAW operations are still Life. One at that point can even delete the original RAW file, as it has completely gotten embedded into the .psd. If so desired, one could strip out any changes and export to .dng again. The Affinity RAW editor seems not to have any of the tools I just described. Also, RAW development in Affinity seems to be understood as the first step in a linear stream of editing operations. One may of course re-enter the Develop workspace, but all tools have forgotten the settings one had dialed in initially. I wonder what your plans are in terms of RAW editing: Do you plan to keep Develop-setting Live? Is non-destructive brush / gradient-based editing with any combination of tools on the roadmap? I also wonder what happens if one uses a couple of RAW based images on a large Poster. In Photoshop one may use these images at their full size or as a thumbnail. But one can scale that thumbnail up again or paste it into a new file and raise the output size here. As the RAW information is encapsulated in the Smart Object one never loses resolution. Obviously one shouldn't go larger that the original RAW but for all smaller output sizes one can practically forget about resolution issues. Is there a similar solution inside Affinity Photo?
  4. Hi there. I've just started trying out the affinity photo beta. I'm impressed, but I've noticed a strange behaviour. On using the brushes, when I start a stroke right on top of another stroke, I can only effect the pixels that were effected by the first stroke. This is very peculiar. Is there a way to turn it off? Thanks! Edit: nvm, figured it out! As you were.
  5. Thank you VERY much for bringing professional software at a price we freelancers can afford. I have noticed very interesting features, like shift click for joining the line from the last stroke ending, this is great for inking workflows. Overall am seeing the software is really advanced, one of the criteria to label it as fully professional is that I am seeing a very complete support of color profiles, ability to work in CMYK mode, color profiles support, and a large etc. I'm really interested in the new affinity applications. That said, some more useful feedback now. Testing it with the activity that keeps me more busy: painting. I am a raster based illustrator, a digital artist. I have some issues with the brush engine, I'm afraid. When zoomed out and painting fast or slow (the usual hardware limitation tends to be that a fast stroke shows jitter, but this is mainly related to the hardware, as in: Apple Pencil has no jitter(such a jewell), Wacom devices have little jitter, and MS Surface has quite jitter, including its latest Studio. ). I know my Wacom Intuos PRO XL has little jitter, much less than what Photo produces when zoomed out. tested in a A4 canvas at 300 dpi, CMYK file, FOGRA39 color profile. If I zoom in, and paint the lines then, the trembling/jittery line becomes not so noticeable, even quite good. But i need to be able to work in zoomed out, seeing the full A4 -or other sizes- as is a must for good composition, or for quite a number of situations. Another problem I found is it seems as if it is updating constantly the strokes, like pixelizing it always that a device is moving, even without painting. This ends up quite distracting while drawing. is like constantly trembling, as updates like every second or less. I have also noticed, like others, that the preview brush lags when hovering, goes behind the cursor. Not a big issue, but... (the jitter is the biggest problem I see in the whole application) Even at 100%, and in lines which were painted zoomed in, and that shows no jitter, it makes something like a preview or something, that the lines borders are not very clean, like with small artifacts. This can be an issue too, for an illustrator. Not so important, when the brush is big, like 380 pixels, the preview circle of the brush kind of shows a marque around when moving, and some times if the pen is steady, disappears totally. Again, these two issues are smaller in importance than then jitter, to me, the showstopper here. If that huge preview of the brush circle is lagging the stroke, I'd suggest that like in other package one could opt for setting to see there just a small cursor, with shape of a brush, or a small triangle, etc. As optional in preferences, of course. It could be quite more comfortable than the trembling smooth circle. And speaking of more unimportant , things of a beta, but I mention here so to help also in this: In the Spanish translation, is a bit non intuitive to name "Estudio" something that would much better be called "Panel" or "Paneles", Quite similar meaning to the word "panel", in English, but surely better idea to set it in plural. In other packages, for this specific matter they would put simply "mostrar" ("show" in English). Estudios is used for the actual meaning of "Studio" or "Essay", or "studies". Oh, I'm speaking about the menu View (Vista), and in there, the deployable menu under the guides manager, where says "Estudios", and actually pops a menu with the panels character brushes, macro, etc... Also noticed that there's actual lag, noticed when zooming in to 57.2% and trying to write small text. (or anything detailed/small) IMO, is due to the starting stroke lag, like if there it processes something and causes that delay, and the start of any stroke. Is some 1/100s of a second, but it removes quite some control and speed over the drawing, making much more difficult to draw small details. My machine is a very old one, so I have the doubt if some of these issues would disappear with a much more powerful machine, but then, other 2D softwares, open source and commercial, do not have any of these issues... :). Anyway, these are most surely typical beta status kind of issues, that's why beta versions do exist ! :) Machine specs: Core i7 860 ( intel processor is from 2009. Is a quad core with hyper threading (8 threads)), 2.8 Ghz. 8 gb ram (of that time). Nvidia GTX 275 graphic card. HD Seagate 7200 rpm. Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bits. Works quite well with high end software, many layers print files, etc. I'm actually quite sure is issues with the brush engine, but providing all specs, anyway. I totally love the idea, that you brought the version to a massive market like Windows, I like the UI, many solutions good for workflow. If the brush engine does not change in a final version, am still very interested in its color/image adjustment capabilities, supporting so many professional specs and needs, and price philosophy (very freelance/indy friendly) , that's why I'm doing such large report. Of course, I have found a lot of nice things in the software, but for polishing a beta, IMHO is more useful reporting the issues. :) One nice thing of the brush engine : Seems to catch a wide range of pressure, from very fine to thicker, more than some other high end packages. Attaching images about the issues, I hope my bad writing on-screen is readable... Oh, forgot to mention: My desktop screen size is 1920 x 108 (native). Drawing at a zoom of 23%, so to see well the A4 page margins, work in global view, which is essential. Zooming in and painting, so, painting at a zoom of 57.2 % Screen of a zoom-in in to examine those strokes made at 57.2 % (so, looking at them in a 136,6 % zoom ) Actually painting at that zoom, 136,6 %. The lines are pretty smoother, now. When looking at 100% zoom, the lines which are indeed, in reality, smooth, those painted at zoom 136,6%, in zoom 100% are seen like pixeled, a bit "artifact-ish" Really hoping this can be useful, as a feedback. :) EDIT: One tiny thing more, when entering in advanced brush settings, I believe that where you say "Acumulación" (Spanish), you might actually better put "Opacidad" as it is in the interface setting. (Opacidad = opacity) EDIT 2 : I wanted to check extremes, so I tried the experiment very zoomed out. Actually I never would draw at a 12% or so zoom, but to test the mechanic of the issue. Worked at several software companies, it usually helped catching issues :). As you can see, is the zoom what makes it loose accuracy -when drawing zoomed out- the more jaggy lines are the ones drawn slower, at the same zoom level :
  6. I get these jagged lines when using wacom, is this a known issue? Thx my settings: I've updated my wacom driver to 6.3.18-5 Better but still jaggy
  7. Hi, I'm a bit confused about the size of the brush. In the top panel the size is in px and in the stroke panel it is in pt. It took me a while to find out that the size is the same but just the unit of measure is different. Is there a possibility to have the same unit for both panels? Regards Jochen
  8. Sorry but this is important to me. I know this feature has been requested before. But I have a reason to repeat this: I love Affinity Designer. Except for its lack of brush smoothing that drives me crazy. Meaning: when drawing w/ a Wacom tablet, the strokes are all wiggly and wobbly. Can we fix this? I'm willing to do whatever it takes, so that people around the world using your product can have this feature. Hire me for $10/month to do this. Autodesk Graphic (formerly iDraw) has it. Illustrator has it. Functioning brush tool is quite basic feature of a vector drawing program. I know you have priorities. I know you can't do everything at once. I know you have an existing feature roadmap. But this feature has been requested time after time, starting from 2014. Please get it done. Again, if I need to work on it for free or for a coffee, I'm ready to do it. Let's get this done. I'm 100% serious. Contact me anytime, and I'll jump working on this on a 24 hours notice. You have help. You have demand for this feature – guys, it's time. Let's get this feature on Affinity Designer. Waiting for your reply.
  9. Is there a way to make a sharpened front brush as part of Adobe Photoshop Brushes ... Why are there only to brush the front blunt? The update is necessary so the front brushes can be pointed.
  10. Hello, when I choose a brush in Pixel Persona I can set it to 50% maximum in the setting. Is this normal or a bug? What irritates me: In the german language forum for Affinity Designer and Photo there someone writes (he has a Mac) that he can overwrite the value of 50 - but what sense makes it to increase a value manually when the controller only comes until 50%? By the way. When I entry a value >50, it goes automatically back to 50. Regards, Martin
  11. Hello, I am requesting these two features 1 - The ability to scale shapes that are using corner tool without losing their actual shape. see this post for more details. 2- Having brushes fill the whole shape's stroke without a gap at the beginning. see this post for more details and thank you :)
  12. Hello, As this lesson here Stylish Strokes: Textured Lines the bee which is a round circle has a brush stroke that starts and ends in full, which means that the brush stroke covers all the areas see photo. But in my case there is a small gap in the circle! see photo. Is this a problem or this is the way it should look? And Thank you :)
  13. Hi, Just bought your amazing program yesterday and have already created several projects for clients with it. Obviously coming from 20 years of Illustrator experience there is a little bit of learning curve to get used to the new short-cuts and features. But a pretty productive day all-in-all. I was trying to use the size and opacity variance feature in the stroke/brush editing tab and can't seem to get it to work. The width works perfectly, but the size and opacity appear to do nothing. The preview updates fine in the editing window, but nothing happens to the object on the page. Am I doing something wrong? I really want this to work because I used the stroke width variance tool in illustrator all the time and hope I can replicate that function in Designer. Thanks in advance for your help.
  14. Hey guys! Its about time I said something on here... :D Here is an Ivy foliage brush I made for school and it turned out well so I thought it would be worth sharing! Original leaf image was CC0 Feel free to use it however! Stay Creative and God bless :) Ivy Brush.afbrushes.zip
  15. Even tough i have a tablet im not good with it - in other apps smoother/less precise drawing options always saved me, and when not Lazy Nezumi. Unfortunally Lazy Nezumi isn't working with my particular tablet+affinity beta on windows, and AD's default smooth while good isn't enougth for my terrible jibbling lines. So like i do 90% of the time i go with the pen tool like im used to... But i can't for my life find how to apply brushes to curves made with the pen. Am i missing something? And if im not how thats not allowed? I mean, since brush tool also create curves, i tought that wouldn't make a difference how i created a curve. Surely pen misses pressure and speed of a stylus so i can get not having that- but vector brushes should apply to curve right? Is there a more hidden menu option for it? If there aren't is there any work around? Heck, i wouldn't mind to lock curve editing to apply a brush if thats what it takes. Took me a long time tracing a image (im loving AD, can't stop using it!) that i planed to use with a brush... im stuck now. Any ideas?
  16. Hello, Ronnie McBride created a really nice rope brush for me and I am wondering if it's possible to apply a fill to the brush shape, not the path which the brush follows? The image I am working on now is attached and what I am trying to do is fill the rope shape with a fill. I've tried a few things but it seems the brush pattern isn't recognized as a shape to fill? The only way I found I could add a fill is to rasterize the path with the rope brush applied.. is that the answer?
  17. Hello, I've been using Affinity for a while now, and have liked it quite a lot. Photo bends quite well to digital painting (sometimes even better than PS) but today I noticed a tiny problem. When I use Paint Brush with a brush that has texture (I've included a picture), the brush cursor shows all the little holes in the brush too, which makes it a bit hard to see what I'm painting. Is there a way to reduce the cursor's visibility somehow? For example turning it into a crosshair permanently (for now crosshair works only when the brush is really small) or showing only the outline of the brush, not it's insides too? I've looked through the Preferences and the forums, but I haven't found a solution yet. Thanks!
  18. Hello--I want to create a vector text headline to use in a design which I'll enlarge and print on fabric. Like a T shirt, I guess. I'd like to use my own handwriting but I don't know how to vectorise it in Affinity Design? Any tips? I'm avoiding the pen tool as I'm so rubbish at it. Thanks for any advice.
  19. Apparently the brushes are not working correctly, as you can see in the picture I'm using a brush that has a broad center and is narrower in the beginning and the end,but in the figure, the line has a solid and uniform stroke.
  20. Greetings all, I'm not sure that this is a bug... but I noticed the scroll slider disappears from the Brush palette window after non-use. If you're using a mouse, not a big deal... scrolling down will invoke the slider. If you're using a Wacom tablet and pen, you are unable to invoke the slider unless you switch back to a mouse and perform an action that triggers the slider. My personal opinion is that the scroll slider element is always on in the Brush palette window or the app detects user input (mouse vs. tablet) and toggles the element accordingly. If I'm missing something, my sincere apologies... I'm havin' a heck of a Monday morning. ;-P Regards, jB
  21. Hello Affinity, Would be great, snap raster brush to any curve line while drawing... sorry for my english, is little bit limited ;)
  22. Still cant see imported brushes in the drop down menu, even when its everything ok
  23. Hi I have just installed the windows beta version on windows 7 with an old wacom intuos 3. I have pressure on raster brushes but the vector brush pressure does not work. Is this me and my settings or is it not supported yet? I have the pressure option set to on and I have tried other options and played around with the pressure graph, but it doesn't make any difference - all the stroke is the same thickness. Hope it was okay to start a new thread I'm not used to forums. Advice appreciated, Cheers Adam
  24. Adobe Photoshop has a History Brush which can be used to paint back from History states. I used it to create digital pictures by painting onto a new blank layer with one of Photoshops art brushes e.g water colour with reduced opacity and gradually building uptake opacity. Please note I don't mean the ART History brush, just the history brush and choosing one of the brush range. Please see attached jpeg example. Unfortunately I cannot find a history brush, or any mention of it in tutorials or help. However while searching the forums I did find: Posted 12 October 2014 - 07:32 PM We will have an upgraded brush engine, new brush sets and a new colour mixing brush for Photo. The history brush in Photo I will also be very useful for digital painting. Is there a history brush I cannot find or has it not yet been introduced? Any advice gratefully received.
  25. Hi I'm trying to apply a textured line style to a circle. My problem is that I get a gap in the circle, as seen in pic. I want a continues line all around the circle. Any suggestions how to solve this? Thanks Susan
