  1. Having the ability to apply a raster brush to a path would be such a welcome feature, even if the path is not editable after applying the brush effect. In many cases there are obscure shapes or angled lines that are difficult to draw freehand, and in those cases it would be great to be able to use the pen tool, but still retain the same texture and style of the raster brush you were using, as if you drew the stroke by hand. I know you can apply vector brushes in AD, but I mostly use the raster brushes in AP to sketch. Furthermore, the brushes in AD are stretched along the path, where in AP it would be great to rather have the ability to make it look like the stroke was drawn as if you were using the brush tool. I’ve recently been drawing out a lot architectural interiors for clients using a drawing tablet in Photo, and have really missed the ‘apply brush to path’ feature from Photoshop - would really speed things up and improve the end results! I’ve seen a few mentions of this online, but wasn’t sure if it was logged as a feature request yet, so here you go.
  2. Hello! I'm having a frustrating time with the brush tool in Affinity Photo. I was drawing with the brush tool but it suddenly stop working. Opacity, flow and hardness are all 100% and protect alpha is unticked. All the other tools work. I tried the 'edit in affinity designer' option but designer also refused to paint on the document. I have opened and closed the programme several times upon advice in previous forums. I've tried painting on different layers and adding new layers to paint but there's no response. I also tried painting whilst not having a layer selected (letting the assistant automatically create a new pixel layer) but the brush still doesn't paint. The strange thing is that i opened a new document and the brush tool works with no issues and with all the same settings as the document which isn't painting. I had both the new document and the document i'm working on open and the programme would only paint on the new document. How can this be fixed? I'm mid way through a drawing and can no longer complete it. Thank you!
  3. Hi. I am trying to find a solution to a problem when using shift click with the paint brush tool in Photo v2.... When I first click with a basic brush, I get the full diameter mark. When I then shift click elsewhere, the line produced between the two points is not of a constant thickness, but instead tapers, starts from the initial point one pixel thick and gets to full thickness at the second point, so I see big dot at the start followed by a straight line that os really thin and gets to full thickness at the end. Been searching for a fix, but cannot see one. I presume I'm doing a Homer, Doh!!! BTW subsequent shift clicks on the same line are all the correct thickness.
  4. Hey there! I'm currently working on a project that could really benefit from 3-way or 5-way rotational/radial symmetry options. What I mean is something like this: There currently is no other way in Photo to achieve this but by using linked layers that where manually rotated by 120°. This also only works semi-optimal since the links kind of brake when you scale the canvas. I posted about this and my workaround with an example file here. Cheers!
  5. Hello, Can anyone tell me why my soft brush is now looking like this (has outline)?
  6. I have an image that I want to apply an adjustment layer over. I want to keep the image mainly black and white, but then I want to paint over specific colors using the In-painting brush tool. For some reason, whenever I paint the image, Affinity just wipes out whatever progress I made, for absolutely no logical reason (I suspect it's a bug). Here's a video I want to follow, for reference purposes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXANeRRPBdw Any help is very much appreciagted.
  7. So I wanted to detect a certain color using the color picker tool and then switch to the brush tool and start drawing, however, if I try to do this, Affinity Photo picks the other color and not the color picked up by the color picker. Is there any way to either change an option so the color picked up gets used as the brush color or is there a keyboard shortcut to change those two colors?
  8. Basically, I'm fairly new to Affinity Designers and recently got a drawing tablet. When I use a mouse to use the vector brush tool it is not shifted/wobbly. But, when I draw the same line with my VEIKK A30 drawing tablet it is all wobbly and shaky. I know I don't have the stabilizer on but, I don't like the way it functions. (I know that's how stabilizers work and are behind the point of your pen but, why are they straight when drawn with the mouse.) Below, is a screenshot I took as an example. You can see the pen settings above in the bar so, please if you see anything wrong point it out. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but, I see numerous videos of Affinity Designer on YouTube where they are drawing straight lines without the stabilizer on...
  9. When use Color Picker Tool,I can pick up color form current layer or form Global. But if I use brush tool and I want to pick color by pressing the screen with finger, it just can get global color. How to pick up color form current layer when use brush tool? -------Supplementary notes-------- I would like to add more details. I need to edit the bottom layer now I use the brush tool. I want to get the skin color by long pressing. But now the reality is that I just got the gray color.
  10. I'm not sure if this is XP-Pen's new driver or Affinity's new update, but I thought I'd mention it here. The 'tilt' brush modifier function does not seem to work in Affinity on my side (even though my tablet definitely supports pen tilt). I've tried it with numerous default and custom Affinity brushes with 'tilt' as a modifier, and the tilting of the pen does not seem to be making any impact on the strokes.
  11. An oddly specific bug I just discovered in Photo - unsure of whether this shows up in Designer too. While sketching out an ornate frame design, I used the symmetry tool with a brush, and everything proceeded as usual. I then used Shift to create a straight line and noticed that the stroke automatically coloured certain parts red - screenshot attached. I tried a few different brushes and ended up with the same result (as you can see), but only when using my tablet pen/stylus - this didn't happen when clicking with the mouse and holding Shift. The layers I worked on didn't have any FX applied, and red was not a colour I had selected (my foreground and background colours were black and white). I've done a quick screen recording for reference: https://youtu.be/blPZMQsAhNQ It's not embedded as a glitch into the document/file though, as I can easily use a "Colour Overlay" effect to change it back to black.
  12. When I hold alt Ctrl and drag my pen sideways I change Pensize and or softnes when dragging up down. I get a visual feedback of the adjusting Size and Softness. Unfortunately the Brushtip is gone after completing the Pensize.
  13. Hello, I don't know if these are bugs or just limitations of the application and iPad, but I figured I would write a bug report about them since these issues strongly hinder how I use Affinity Designer on my iPad. I am also bundling what I would normally consider two separate bugs because I found them together and they cause mutually exclusive issues for me. If you guys want me to format my report any differently in the future, just let me know. Ok, so the issues I am having stem from the smudge brush tool and specifically how it works when the color space is set to RGB/8. I was experimenting using the smudge brush to create a smooth blend between two colors. What ended up happening, however, is that the colors would become very distorted. When I was trying to blend a burnt orange and dark-ish blue, the blending would eventually smear to pink in stark contrast from what the blend is supposed to make (see first attached image). I tested the same blend in Procreate as a reference and it had no such issues at all. I got the weird smeary brown I expected to get. After experimenting to try to understand the issue better, I found that if I set the color space of the document to RGB/16 instead of RGB/8 that the issue went away entirely. I tried the same blend of colors and got the correct result I was expecting to get from smudging these two colors together (see first attached image again). I also found that blending colors in general via any method seemed to generally work better in the RGB/16 color space (I kept getting a sort of stripy effect in RGB/8) so I was very pleased with the find. So with that, I thought, problem fixed! I can do everything I want now with no issues. I was anticipating a performance hit of some kind for using the higher bit depth, but there didn't seem to be any downside to the change. Well, that held true until I tried to do some hatching. So, what I found is that I can make a singular contiguous stroke of any length at any speed my hand can manage and Affinity Designer responds amazingly quick, almost instantaneously. It is wonderful. However, I also found that if I make a lot of rapid strokes of any length with any brush, Affinity cannot keep up. If I keep making little hatching strokes, the delay can range from 0.5-1.5 seconds to 5-10 seconds. So I can make a lot of marks, then pull my pen away from the screen, and over the next several seconds watch as Designer slowly populates in my brush strokes. This is a fairly frustrating issue because I use hatching a lot and it even hinders normal handwriting. Please see the attached video to see my demonstration of the issue. Also, the delay in fast stroke rendering varies over time and seems to change based on the length of time I have been using my iPad, not with document complexity or resolution. The delay is smallest after I freshly restart my iPad, and is longest after using it for some hours. I also tested these issues in Affinity Photo. I found that the behavior of the Smudge Brush Tool is the same, but there is no delay in rendering fast strokes in RGB/16 mode. With that being the case, I could theoretically just use Affinity Photo for drawing/painting instead of Designer, but the Artboards feature of Designer is just so dang useful that I loath to give it up. For my hardware and software info, I am using the 2020 iPad Pro and the version of Affinity Designer is 1.8.6.1. The version of Affinity Photo I am using is 1.8.6.198. Let me know if you have any questions or if you need any additional information from me. Thank you, Collin Image 1: Demonstration of RGB/8 vs. RGB/16 smudging Video 1: Demonstration of the delay in rendering fast strokes in RGB/16 mode PXL_20201214_215420542.mp4
  14. I am new to Affinity designer. I am trying to draw using my Wacom cintique, but ever stroke I make changes shape as soon as I lift my pen. It's driving me nuts because I think I know what line I'm drawing and then Affinity "corrects" it. How do I adjust the tolerance/fidelity/ smoothness like in Adobe Illustrator?
  15. Hi! I hav a problem with brush tool (especially when I have used different star brush), when I work with making of a card or ad etc. After using the brushes the eraser tool no longer erases, it is a brush! Why, and how, do I fix it?
  16. It is possible add this feature "Add new curve to selected curves object" (checkbox button on Context Toolbar), which is only in Pen Tool, to Pencil and Brush Tool?
  17. Hi, I have found a bug where the program crashes consistently whenever I press CTRL-Z after using the brush tool. Steps to reproduce: Open new document In vector persona draw some lines with the brush tool using CTRL-Z undo the lines Go to pixel persona Using brush tool make some lines on the page Use CTRL-Z undo the lines Go back to Vector persona Make some lines using the brush tool Using CTRL-Z undo the lines (the program will now become unresponsive) If you undo using the edit>undo menu it does not crash, only when using the keyboard shortcut does it crash. It does this every time for me, whether it is a new document or not. I am using AD version 1.7.3.481 Thanks, Ben
  18. Hi The paint brush tool works normally upon starting up Affinity Photo, but after executing actions such as changing the brush, color, or swapping to another tool and then back to the brush, the paint brush tool will often enter a state where it will allow me to draw only straight lines. The mouse itself it still able to move freely, but when attempting to draw even a simple curve, a straight line will be drawn instead, starting from where the mouse initially was and ending at where the mouse stopped. So far, the only solution I have to this is to close the application and start it again, which can be quite troublesome considering this issue happens every 5 to 10 minutes. I've even updated the application to the latest 1.7.2 update, but the same issue still happens.. I'm wondering if anyone is having the same issue? Or if there is any solution to this? Thanks!!
  19. This past weekend I met up with some working professional freelance illustrators and concept artists (five of them to be exact, and myself) for a coffee drink-and-draw at a local coffee shop. Affinity came up as a topic, and we had a good, long chat about it - I suppose like a mini focus group. I figured that if 6 illustrators had a unanimous opinion about something, then it's probably true for many others. The general consensus was that Affinity apps for iPad are essential tools, and by far the best range of robust tools for industry work on the iPad (aside from the obvious, Procreate). With desktop, while the response was mostly positive, and while most agreed that it is technically possible to replace their current software with Affinity, the biggest issue was the brush tool. All the illustrators I spoke to work with dedicated drawing tablets on their desktop (among them was the Huion Kamvas, XP-Pen display tablets, and Wacom Cintiq and Intuos tablets), and digitally draw/paint their work in either Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint. Everyone said that, while the pixel brushes themselves looked nice and that they liked the customisable features in the brushes panel, they 'felt' a bit clunky to draw with (for lack of a better word), and lack the same 'buttery' fluidity, perfect precision, and perfect pressure sensitivity of some of Affinity's competitors. I think 'felt' is a really important word here. The brushes can often 'feel' a bit stiff and inaccurate to the tablet input at times, especially when doing work that requires a great deal of precise brush work, which results in the experience feeling just a bit off. The final illustration work may look fine when it's finished, but the drawing/painting experience is not quite there (i.e. there's a lot more cmd+z involved than should be necessary), which can hinder workflow, efficiency, and can be a bit frustrating at times. As a dedicated user of Affinity software (almost exclusively for over a year now), I felt it was important to mention this in the forums, as I have the same concern. I've mentioned tablet input inaccuracy in a few posts, and I'm really hoping that it gets addressed or looked into soon. Sadly, I've heard time and time again that this is a deal breaker for a lot of illustrators and digital artists looking to use the software, not for vector art or photo editing, but for pixel-based digital painting, professional comics, and precise and/or detailed linework. Fixing the tablet input accuracy issues could open a lot of doors for Affinity, and for potential users that are getting more and more frustrated with monthly subscriptions, but feel tied down out of necessity. A very large portion of Photoshop's user base is made up of digital artists, and I definitely think Affinity Photo has a huge potential to make an impact in that field too. I'm sure there's (hopefully) a fairly easy fix for this, as Photoshop, Sketchbook Pro, Clip Studio Paint, Krita, and so many others have already managed to get their brushes to feel near perfect for drawing and painting. Sorry for the long winded post, but I guess this is more like my pitch to get this issue smoothed out for a better user experience.
  20. Hi! I’m evaluating Affinity Designer as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator and I’m very impressed. However, my main tool would be the vector brush and I’m a bit disappointed with it. I find that Affinity’s vector brush re-interprets my strokes too much. I draw a curve and the resulting stroke gets transformed: it ends up being a bit too flat or a bit too curvy, a bit off. Is there a way to control the brush tool tolerance? In Adobe Illustrator, I can control brush fidelity and smoothness (see screenshot). I would say Affinity Designer’s tool would compare to Illustrator’s brush options set at 5 pixels / 5 %. I prefer setting it at 1 pixel / 1% for higher fidelity. Can something like this be done? (Please note that this doesn’t apply to the pixel brush (Pixel Persona), which follows my strokes precisely.)
  21. I recently watched a YouTube video on how to apply a paint splatter effect to a photo in AP. I blindly followed the instructions - which were very clear - and have repeated it several times since, each time experimenting a little to really get a feel for it. I'm fairly confident I now understand WHY I'm doing certain things, but one step refuses to make sense. If anyone can shed some light I'd be very grateful. These are instructions: Use the rectangle tool to draw completely around the image, then drag the resulting layer underneath the background layer Select the background layer, then click the pixel layer button so a new pixel layer is added to the top of the pile Select the brush tool with a strong Grunge texture, paint over the image so most of it is covered with a fairly heavy stipple (in black) Drag the background layer 'into' the pixel layer so it becomes integrated with it. At this point suddenly the image becomes visible again, but textured Add a black and white layer to the top of the stack and adjust the colour sliders to create the best effect Duplicate the white rectangle layer and drag the copy to the top of the stack Apply a gradient to the rectangle and change the colours to something appealing Finally, change the blend mode of the gradient layer to Overlay which reveals the final image All of the above are mainly making sense now, except 4. It's as if the pixel layer becomes a mask, with the black brush strokes revealing the underlying image, but the unpainted areas revealing the white 'canvas' of the very bottom white rectangle. Even if that explanation is correct, I don't know why it works. Can anyone explain how the relationship between the original background and the painted pixel layer changes by dragging the one into the other? I've attached an example in the hope this makes sense.
  22. Right now, holding Alt+RMB+LMB lets you drag and resize the brush on the fly, which is a feature Photoshop also has. Except in Photoshop it's just hold Alt+RMB, which currently does nothing in Affinity Photo. Please change this shortcut to this for all the tools that let you change brush sizes. Not only is it easier to do, it standardizes for those who still use both PS and AF. On top of that, Photoshop has a shortcut in brush mode, clicking RMB brings up a list of brushes. Convenient, and eliminates the need to always have the brushes toolbox open.
  23. Hi, I'd like to ask you what is the purpose of showing the "none" colour the way of white colour when the Brush tool in Pixel Persona is selected. It is often confusing when I'm gonig to draw something hith white colour but the brush is not painting at all. Then I see, by comparing the colour selector and colour sliders, that there is difference and not consistancy, what means I had to sellect "none" colour before (often repeated when comming from Designer Persona to Pixel Persona with none colour in selector). I guess it would be better to indicate the none statement with red diagonal line as usual. The same for Affinity Photo.
  24. I want to create a path of rectangles in Designer, but right now when I draw using the brush I created, the rectangles become curved to follow the path. I want the rectangles to follow the curve but remain parallel, 90-degree rectangles. In my attached jpg you can see two paths I created. The top path is by using the new brush I created. The lower path is by my manually lining up rectangles. The bottom path example is the look I am after, but it is way too tedious to build. How can I get the look of the lower path but build it efficiently? I have many paths in different colors I want to create to make a Ticket to Ride board game. Thanks for any help! Karenq
  25. Hi everyone, I have been noticing after this most recent update that my brush tool is lagging a little. When I begin a stroke, it takes a few seconds (literally) for the line to appear. In order to try and solve this, I would like to try deleting and reinstalling Affinity Designer. But will this delete everything? I know in some apps you lose whatever information you created, whereas in others you appear to keep your data. Alternatively, if you knew a way to solve this problem without deleting and reinstalling, please let me know. Thanks for your help, Phoebe
