  1. I've been using AD for about a week now and I must say I love. I have a couple of tools and personalization options I still miss from Illustrator and I'm hoping to see them in Affinity soon. One of these is the option to choose the background color of a PNG file upon exporting. Setting a background in any color is fast and easy while creating the content, but exporting an image with a transparent background is impossible. Or at least I haven't found the way to do it.
  2. For a few applications, e.g. with shapes with the 3d effect, it's important to be able to visually "cut" a hole in the shape without actually altering the original shape. It's also useful in general to be able to remove a shape's area from a drawing without having to mess around with subtracting the shape or shapes from (especially since the order of the layers sometimes gets messed up if you don't subtract the shape from each shape individually, which means a lot of copy-pasting). So I'm asking if it's possible to set a shape to act as a visual "removal" effect. If it's not clear what I mean, I mean that, if a shape is set like this, the area where the cutting-out shape is should show the background, visually overriding layers below it that might otherwise be visible there. EDIT: Turns out the Erase blendmode is what I'm looking for.
  3. Hi. Something strange happens to me with affinity photo, which doesn't happen to me in any other artistic program, or not. The problem is that the background, flickers or changes color, becoming a little darker or lighter with certain actions (it is possible that even the canvas does, but where it really shows is in the background), I would say that what does is darken for half a second and then regain normal lighting. It happens in two ways. The first is done randomly when I press the alt, control, or shift modifier keys. The other, always happens in the same way, and it is curious because it does so depending on the tool you have selected. It occurs in two cases when it does. The first, when you move the cursor from the canvas to the background or from the background to the canvas. This only happens with the following selected tools: brush tool, mix brush tool, rubber tool, overexposure brush, all blur tools, except the finger tool. The second case occurs when you go from the background to the toolbar but not when you go to the canvas. This occurs with the following tools. Gradient tool, pen tool, geometric shapes tool and text tool. The color variation is not much, I did not notice it on my external monitor, until I changed the configuration to one with high light (presentation on my Benq monitor), but with this configuration it is very remarkable. I also could not make a video for a curious reason. As soon as I open OBS studio (my recording program), this flickering stops happening. I don't even have to record, just by opening the program this problem stops happening. In this designer forum they talk about something that seems similar . I have verified that changing to WARP as it is said there the problem stops happening, but unfortunately the brushes become unusable due to their slowness, since Intel UHD 620 is the option that my card should use. My computer. HP Notebook, 16g ram, I7, Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics card. I use windows 10. Hope this problem can be solved. Thank you very much for your attention and greetings.
  4. Can you convert from color to grayscale and/or black/white in Affinity Designer and/or Photo? This is very helpful for designing for the very few people who cannot see color in checking for background/foreground contrast.
  5. Hi Im going to make album art and want it to have that old vinyl record look. Anybody know where i can find background paper texture for this purpose?
  6. I have Affinity Photo V1.9. I have a photo of 2 people that I want to frame. Problem is they are up pretty high in the picture and I wanted to expand the little bit of background that is above them a little further so that they appear a more centered in the picture. Is there a way to do this in affinity photo?? Thanks very much in advance for any assistance.
  7. Hello, I am new to Affinity Photo. I am trying to save a .afphoto document in .PSD format. It does successfully export the file but for some reason only the background layer gets deleted. When I open the .PSD file again in Affinity Photo the background layer is not visible. Can someone help me with this? Also, I've made the switch to Affinity Photo recently and I've been loving it. Thank you.
  8. I've looked at tutorials for this, but I could not find a great solution to this. What's the best way to go about removing the background from this dog?
  9. I wonder if I just screwed up a setting without realising - or if there's been a change in the beta in comparison to the release: The background (canvas) of the layer thumbnails now shows up as a transparent checkerboard - instead of a solid surface as in the main window. Very irritating. Is there a way to turn this of again? Cheers, Timo
  10. Made from this excellent tutorial:
  11. This has been happening for a little while: if i create a new document of any specs, I see the outline of the documents border as a grey box, but there appears to be a static portion of the document that is either white, or the transparency checkerboard if I've checked transparent background. The rest of the document background remains black. Zooming in or out or scrolling around will not change where this visible area appears on my screen; it's always located in the upper left corner of the window. It feels like it might be a screen redraw bug, but I'm not sure. I just tried a document I created in June and I can't seem to replicate it. I'm using 1.8.4 on a new iMac running OS 10.15.6. Thanks.
  12. Hi Affinity Forum! I'm fairly new to Affinity and having been learning as I go since buying it over the summer, but I have come across a hurdle that I need some help with. I'm in the early stages of founding a new online wine startup (caminodelvino.co.uk) and I have been practising and playing around with my photo and editing skills in the run up to launch. Using a mini home studio as my setup, I've managed to edit a photo (see wine photo attached) to an acceptable level so far and recently, used the healing brush tool to edit out the crease line on my backdrop so that it looks more 'professional'. I have three questions: 1) is there a better alternative to using the healing brush for the removing background creases or folds? 2) if not, is there anyway I can make it non-destructive to the photo at all, or is this likely to be a last decision editing job in any circumstances? 3) As much as blue is a nice colour, it isn't the backdrop I'd like to use for my wine on my website. I have alternative backdrop colours, but I was wondering if there is anyway I can lay over a full background colour (RGB Hex #FEF0E2) to be more inline with my companies colour palette, whilst retaining that 'professional' photo look about it (i.e slight shadow effect etc. - see shoe photo for example). Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
  13. Quick question guys (thanks in advance), to a very elementary question. I've done this before but can't figure what I'm missing to perform it again. I'm simply trying to make the artboard background invisible (screenshot below) but need the logo image to be white (I made it gray so you could see it in the screenshot). I can't remember how to get rid of the background! feeling like a dork, appreciate your help, -Christo
  14. Hey everyone! The background color is bright even though the normal UI is set to dark. This isn't great to work with. I am using iPad mini 5, iOS 13.4.1, Designer 1.7.1. Best wishes, Shu
  15. Hi, I'd like to set a colour (not the default black) for the workspace background which is different to the document area, but I can't see how to do this. Can anyone help please? Cheers, H.
  16. I am new to Affinity to to photo editing. I am practicing from the purchased workbook. However, I have a deadline to meet and can't figure out how to change the background of my photos to solid black. I received the ceramic images photographed with a mixture of busy backgrounds. I am re-photographing all 30 of the ceramic pieces on black cloth backdrops, but I am running out of time. Where can I find step by step instructions on how to take a photo and change its background to solid black? Thank you so much for your assistance!!
  17. When I paste in something from some random website, or something from an another app — I get this WEIRD BACKGROUND i can’t remove. I found a workaround by using the effects presets, but it’s REALLY ANNOYING. SOMEBODY FINALLY FIX THIS OR GIVE US THE ABILITY TO IMPORT TEXT WITHOUT FORMATTING. This alongside how Affinity doesn’t remember my choice for spelling after I close my documents — and the fact how AFFINITY SEEMS TO THINK THE WORD “AUTO” IS MISSPELLED makes me literally scream every time i pick my ipad lol. come on guys please fix some of this stuff soon FullSizeRender.mov
  18. I'm sure there's a perfectly simple answer to this question, but I'm new to publisher and I don't have a book to refer to. After assembling my document, I decided to put in a semi-transparent image beneath the composition. When I placed the image on the lowest layer, I noticed that all my text was sitting in white, horizontal boxes. Now my document looks like a ransom note. I've looked in every menu and every tool, and I can't remove the white background behind my text. Any thoughts? Image attached. Thanks in advance. P.S. Whats the difference in function between the Place Image tool and the Picture Frame Rectangle tool?
  19. I am a newbie for affinity photo. I am trying out how to make a photo or an image background transparent. I have tried the above method and I still get the white background as saved file. Can someone show me a YouTube link if there is any? (I have found one link and I also tried what it says but still I get a white background instead).
  20. A recent post in the Questions forum asked about seamless tiling. There are also video tutorials available, such as the one on Seamless Textures. I describe here how I created a seamless tile to form a repeatable background to the pages on one of my web site. The website was for a wood, so the starting point for the background image was a photo of the autumn woodland floor covered in leaf litter: This image will not tile seamlessly. The first step is to apply the Affine transformation (Filters > Distort > Affine) with an offset of 50% in each of the x and y axes. This gives: The left and right edges of this would now tile seamlessly (as would the top and bottom. But there is the mismatch along the central axes. To get rid of these I placed images of single leaves onto these axes. The leaves were scanned on a flatbed scanner; the individual images edited to remove the white background and they were then saved as .png images. The leaves were placed onto my background using File > Place, and then resized to some extent to get the right scale, and they were randomly rotated. This has now masked all the non-seamless axes. The Affine transform is now reversed, using the same procedure as before ( (Filters > Distort > Affine) with an offset of 50% in each of the x and y axes) This has now created a seamless tile. However, in this example, The placed leaves are conspicuously around the edges, so I added some more at random points over the rest of the image: I could have added more, but I chose to stop there. This image now forms a seamless tile. To demonstrate the effect, I placed four copies of the image together to show how they tile seamlessly (or they would do if I get my placing more precise). In this example, I started off with a background of leaf litter on the woodland floor. I could have started with a blank image and placed leaf images all over it to hide any background. Then I would begin the procedure as above. This would probably have been better since there would be no distinction between the the various leaf images; they would blend in better. However, for my purposes, I liked the original woodland floor image. For a background page for a website, I faded the image above to as not to be too intrusive. I used this technique for the Friends of Coombe Wood web pages. (Apologies for not updating it. I have been unable to visit for the last few months.) John
  21. I have a PNG file with a transparent background which I use to overlay my images with my logo...when I open the PNG file, it opens with a white background...How do I open the file and maintain transparency.
  22. I placed an image into a Publisher document page and added text within the image area. After grouping all of the elements, with the group selected I exported to JPEG ("Selection with background"). The resulting JPEG file contained a thin white border that was not in the original file. Then I tried exporting using the "without background" setting. Same result. Then I tried it as a PNG ("selection with background"). Same result. Next I tried it as a PNG without background and finally the thing was exported without the thin white rule. This has happened several times when I've exported a selection to JPEG. (The quality setting is always 85 or higher.) So it doesn't appear to be some peculiarity of a particular image. I don't want to have to export first to PNG, then open the PNG file in some other program and re-save as JPEG. Is there some way to save from Publisher to JPEG without the unwanted rule around the image?
  23. Hello everyone! I've created a pack of 20 Abstract Backgrounds using the Affinity Photo, that can be used for any creative purpose, and made it available for purchase from Gumroad. Feel free to check it out. You can use the code affinity for getting a 10% DISCOUNT! Thank you.
  24. I am trying to remove background from a picture of handwritten text and export it to a PNG with transparent background. I open a JPEG image in Affinity Photo. Adjust image to B&W and adjust brightness and contrast. I then go to Select=> Sampled Color and adjust to select everything but the text. I delete selection and I have included a screenshot of what I get. I then export as a PNG. The PNG file has a lighter background on it that I can't seem to get rid of. If I delete the selection, shouldn't it be gone with no trace? Document=>Transparent Background is checked I have made sure Matte in PNG export is "nothing"(red line through it). I have also tried Filters=>colors=>Erase White Paper with a similar end result. I have attached the original file and a screenshot of the final product in AF Photo. It got an error when I tried to upload the PNG file. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance
