This is my second vector portrait. First I began creating the vector shapes in the face - eyes, eye brows, nose, mouth, shadows and hair (first image). The second image shows the various stages of building the vector shapes and a screenshot of the outline view. Third image shows how far I have progressed now; this was done by applying custom made brush strokes (I needed to create 10 so far and perhaps I will need more in the process). It is far from finished, but a more detailed update sequence can be seen in my portfolio blog: https://communicats.blogspot.nl/2018/03/marlon-brando-vector-portrait.html Also attached the afdesign-file so it becomes clear how the vector shapes were built for people that are interested. Building custom vector brushes is a trial and error process mostly, because AD does not have the dynamics settings of brushes like AP has, but fiddling with the options there are in AD, transparency, layer filters, with the direction of the nodes and pressure settings creates an almost similar effect. This portrait is more difficult to make than the previous one of Abe Lincoln, because Brando is younger in this photo and has less pronounced wrinkles in the face. I don't always stick to the facial features in the reference photo, because I want to enhance certain characteristics while decreasing the accent of others to try to bring out the essence of the person in the portrait. I know this has been repeatedly discussed in these forums but I have yet to find where there is an indication that the ability to edit and read metadata within the Affinity applications is coming in the near future -- I apologize if I've overlooked anything that addresses this but I'm a bit pressed for time on the matter. I work for an organization that tightly locks down what applications are allowed on our systems. We have approval for 16 Photo and 8 Designer licenses on our R&D network but I'm trying to get them approved for use with our much larger NMCI network so they are more widely available (i.e. I want to be able to use them at work instead of Illustrator and Photoshop). When discussing this with the person who administers software over in our graphic design group, I got this as part of their response: " It's been tough getting anyone to really try it though. ... Serif would have to add the metadata input and read capabilities before we could use it though. We're relying heavily on metadata searches to find files on the xsan." From what I've seen and heard over the years this capability is pretty much an expectation that is taken for granted among many graphics professionals so the response really didn't surprise me. I've forwarded them links to some of the related metadata topics in this forum that suggest workarounds but I hope that this capability is coming soon.

Hi. I am struggling in something that whenever I try to make something, I don't get to use the smartness of Affinity Designer. It doesn't show me the automated height, length and angle thing. Like in the below screenshot, I am trying make something with the pen tool but then affinity designer is not showing the right height I should make so that it matches the previously drawn side on the other half (or I say follow the symmetry). How do I make a symmetrical vectors? Screenshot: P.S.: I am trying to learn things and if you think there is some video which could help me out too (any tutorial)? Please care to share with me. Any help is always appreciated. Thanks.

Hello! I designed a little scene in AD, and put everything on its own layer(as you would in AI when importing to AE): Each element is separated out, for example: To my knowledge, the current way to get separated layers into AE, is to use .PDF, which seems to work perfectly(also note that with "Karma" selected in AE, it highlights exactly what I want): However, which I convert the layer into Shape Layers using "Create Shape Layers from Vector Layer," the "Karma" text completely goes away and it adds vectors from I don't know where along with a grey background: Karma is no where to be found in the Shape Layers groups and it added layers from somewhere else. It appears that "Facts & Trivia" and those 5 images get put on every layer that I break apart. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

The robot who was once destroyed and sometime after re-animated by the evil will of technomancer. This guy is like a zombie but made of steel. Used new for me method of inking - vector brushes without any pressure sensitivity at all. You just create the shape you need and make a brush out of it. Having some brushes made in this manner results in nice and natural looking inks. The reason for using them is actually better predictability of strokes and much higher speed. The brush engine just does not spend time calculating size and opacity variability and you get much faster inks. For many inking tasks this is more than enough. Have you been using this method? How you feel about it?

I have recently become aware of the ability to animate SVG (Affinity Designer) for the web. There are applications coming out that make it really easy, however, the file size is a serious problem if you intend to have your work in a web page as Affinity does not offer the reduction of file size. Here is a youtube video I made on 09/03/2018. It is impressive what one can achieve. This is a concept for a web homepage. If you look closely there is some really subtle animation. The balloon has a flame which gets turned on and off to make it rise, the balloon also changes size in that as it moves away into the air it gets smaller. The clouds in places are semi-transparent. Also, the sun has a haze around it which disperses as the sun bets higher in the sky. All these really subtle changes make for huge file sizes. One online SVG animator which is still in beta is svgator.com which is free but limited. I have included a file of a puppy wagging its tail and turning its head which I animated in svgator. Just drag the (1A 76 questioning puppy.svg) file onto a web browser and it will automatically play and is on infinite loop. You have to export the files as an SVG from Affinity Designer and then upload that file into the svgator system. The head, body and tail have to be different and separate files to be able to animate them: i.e. the head would be nested in affinity designer the body would be nested and so would the tail. Exported as SVG and then imported to your animator of choice and there are many out there some free. 1A 76 questioning puppy.svg

affinity designer Realistic vector portrait of Abe Lincoln
VectorWhiz posted a topic in Share your work
Created this from scratch in Affinity Designer. Zero pixels, all vector. Not finished yet, but progressing nicely. Used a lot of swatches, transparency, blurring on areas and custom vector brushes. This is my first attempt at a realistic vector portrait. Original drawing 40 x 50 cm. Progress sequence will be posted in my portfolio blog once completed. -
Messing around again... Not that anyone will be interested but I'm still posting it. I was wondering if you can draw something with just one object and its gradient fills. So these are just squares with a gradient fill then a fx colour overlay and a fx gradient overlay. The gradient overlays were conical with a blend mode of glow, the colour overlay was grey with blend mode of reflect. Then the main gradient was linear, normal, and that made the shape as depending on the colour it also varies the width. I tried the storm trooper a couple of times, still failed. So the the answer is you sort of can and if you spent more time perfecting the best way of doing it then they might look quite good.

A portrait as a handmade vector drawing is always associated with a lot of effort, but it's worth it. The drawings always have their own charm and offer what a photograph can't offer. And of course, the vector drawings can be enlarged without loss of quality http://b-bertuleit.de/vektorzeichnungen/

Transaprent Text Layer
RJH@ParcelFast posted a topic in Pre-V2 Archive of Affinity on iPad Questions
Hello, A have a plain coloured rectangle as the bases of my design. I want to add some text onto this layer but instead of the text being filled with a colour I would like the text to be transparent so that when I use the graphic the text will change colour depending on what it is layered above, is this possible? I find the simple things seem to be the hardest to do. #LovingAD Many thanks, Rob- 2 replies

HI, I've been using Affinity Designer for a couple of years now and it has become one of my favourite apps to use. But there are a few small issues that I've been hoping would be fixed with each release and haven't. Issues that just grate on me and diminishes my love for the app every time they come up. 1. Undoing an opt+drag copy just undoes the drag action and not the couple action. So my layers get littered with extra copies that I have to manually seek and destroy. A real time waster. 2. I use geometry a LOT, it drives me crazy the when I add/subtract/intersect shapes in a group, that the new shape skips out of the group and gets moved to the top of all layers. And then I have to grab and a put it back into the group it belongs to. 3. I've found that when I export an artboard, if the position of the artboard isn't set to a whole number, then the export process will add 1px to the dimension. If I have a 100x100px artboard and the artboard position within the document is set to x: 2.5 y:2.5, then the exported the image will be 101x101px. Make exporting really tedious when I have a lot of artboards, since I have to go in and move every artboard that's not positioned on whole numbers. 4. If I select an object by clicking it in the layers panel, when I press shift+arrow I expected it to super nudge (10px) the object on the artboard, but instead, it selects more layers in the layers panel. I use Designer a lot at my job and if it weren't for those 4 things, I'd be super happy with the experience and recommend it to everyone. But as it is, because it occurs with functions I use all the time, it wears me down. thanks -Pete
