  1. In this lesson we set up a document inside of Affinity using guides to create bleeds. Then we go on to create a business card. Check it out and go create. https://youtu.be/tDxQaOVVWrg *Please note that this was created in 2015 using version 1.2, there have been a lot of updates since and the upcoming release of 1.7 will solve my work arounds for this tutorial. 2. Had once again a design task (dynamic distribution of rectangles), which I wanted to solve with " constraints" and was actually surprised that the well-known bug was still not fixed?! Actually it's a great function and a good selling point, but it can also make the work of a designer a lot easier. But only under the condition that this function also works 100% and it definitely doesn't work and this already since the introduction of Affinity Designer. But this was one of the few reasons why I said goodbye to Adobe Illustrator AD1.7.1.404_constraints_bug.afdesign
  3. This is the last drawing I have prepared with a 2.5 hour study. https://youtu.be/wbmRDfpI7k0
  4. If you change the displayed/active artboard of a multi artboard Designer file placed on a master page, this change won't be reflected on regular pages. It always shows the artboard that was first visible upon placing the file. It's possible this also happens with other types of multipage documents (Affinity Photo, PDFs) but I only tested with Designer files. Steps to reproduce: Open Affinity Designer Create a new document with 2 Artboards Draw a purple circle on the first artboard and a blue square in the second, just so they're instantly recognizable Save it somewhere, you can now close Designer, it won't be used anymore Create a new Publisher file, check Default Master so a master page is already applied to any pages added Add a few pages to the document, let's say 6, just so the issue is more evident Double click Master A in the Pages panel so you can add elements to it Place the Designer document you saved on step 4, by default it should show the first artboard, the purple circle Notice the purple circle is correctly displayed on all pages where the Master A is applied Back on the Master A, select the placed file and use the context toolbar to change to the second artboard You should now see the blue square on the master page as expected Notice that the blue square is not being shown on the pages where the master is applied, instead you continue to see the purple circle This is not just a visual bug, if you export a PDF all pages will indeed have the purple circle instead of the blue square Thanks!
  5. Hey! Just wanted to get answer to this simple question, as there is a 20% discount now and I don't wanna miss it. If you buy any Affinity product after the trial, is it linked to you somehow? Maybe through an email or something? Or is it just linked to the PC? I am asking this because I plan on getting a new one soon and I certainly don't wanna buy Affinity license twice. Thanks in advance.

  7. We are pleased to announce a major update for the Windows release of Affinity Designer, version 1.7.1 Changes in this Build The changes in Affinity Designer 1.7.1 (for Windows) over the recent release Affinity Designer 1.7.0 are as follows: Support for multi-page Affinity Publisher documents Fixed sporadic crash with HSL range control Removed limits to shadows highlights effects Avoid over saturated shadows and washed out highlights New curve for highlights filter applied to bounded pixel formats Remap shadows and highlights slider ranges Fixed hang when scrolling through Slices panel Fixed custom panel height being reset on app start Fixed Gradient Colour selection closing popup immediately Reduced file sizes when starting from/inserting an image Fixed crash when pressing Esc during a floating panel drag Removed resize gripper when the Status bar is visible Added double click to Assign/Convert profile dialog Fixed Column guides colour > Tint slider not working Added Save over imported PSD files Fixed Scale with Object causing stroke size to be incorrectly reflected in the Appearance panel Fixed Symbol unlinked orange dashed line not showing up for unlinked symbols Fixed 32-Bit Preview panel being clippedwhen upgrading from 1.6 Fixed CMYK Colour profile setting the Grey profile to empty Fixed Noise not being applied on a gradient stop colour Fixed crashes in History and Layers panel Fixed brush preview outline still present when colour picking with Alt+click Enabled Resize document to work withphysical units Fixed EPS "Export text as curves" checkbox being disabled Fixed PDF export of RGB documents in greyscale documents Fixed sporadic crash on print Added preference for opening documents in a new floating container Fixed Adjustments thumbnails in the Layers panel are not being updated Fixed failure in 1.7.0 to read custom keyboard shortcuts. Changes in 1.7.0 (Since 1.6.5) The changes in Affinity Designer for Windows 1.7.0 over the last Affinity Designer patch 1.6.5 are as follows: Tools We've overhauled most of the core tools, adding subtle new features to make you more productive. New Point Transform Tool allows you to scale and rotate objects from any node. The Node Tool now contains a 'Transform Node' option which provides a containing box for the selected nodes and allows for more freeform editing of the nodes. New 'Cube' grid setup mode (take a look in 'View' -> 'Grid and Axis Manager...'). Pen tool now has a 'rubber band' mode and also a mode to allow future curves to be added to the current object's curves (for example, the character 'a' is constructed of two curves in a single 'curve object' and this mode makes that construction simpler). Node tool can now auto-snap nodes if you drag a node from one curve over the top of a node from another (selected) curve and pause, it will offer to snap to the same geometry as the node you're hovering over (ie, modify the on and off-curve nodes to match). This is really useful for trying to reconstruct areas of one curve from another curve. Node tool now allows for lasso selection of nodes by holding the Alt/Option key and dragging a selection lasso. Pencil tool now offers a 'sculpt' mode that allows for extending or manipulating curves in a more natural way. More to come in this area soon. Many tools now allow for 'Alignment widgets' which you can toggle the visibility of in the context toolbar. When enabled you can visually adjust the alignment or even, for example, 'align to centre, snapped to the left edge of this object' by simply click/dragging. Fill tool correctly allows editing of skewed fill handles and newly-created skewed fills draw much nicer now. Ruler origin can be edited by simply dragging the area where the rulers intersect each other - it can even be snapped onto objects in the document. Guides can be edited in most tools by simply dragging a guide in the ruler area. Grid setup is now more interactive: origin can be dragged, axis scale adjusted and angle adjusted on-document, complete with snapping to objects and angles in the document to help you reconstruct useful grids from finished artworks or sketches. By enabling 'Edit in Plane' on the new Isometric Panel, tools can edit objects and appear to make those edits along the currently active plane - extremely useful for artists who enjoy working with any axonometric projections. You can now drag the rotation centre point (when enabled on the context toolbar) while holding Ctrl and it will translate the object - this is actually very useful for positioning and snapping objects relative to others. Shapes tools now have presets so you can create your own favourite shape setups and more easily use them again. There are just far too many subtle tool changes to mention here, but hopefully you'll find the tools much improved General Arrowheads are now available in the Stroke Panel. New Appearance Panel allows for multiple strokes and fills on a single shape. HDR / EDR monitor support New brushes, styles and assets are now shipped with the product. Visible bleed (accessed from the View menu) so you can more easily design into the bleed area - a common feature request. “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Designer will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done. New 'Isometric Panel' makes it easy to setup and work with various axonometric projections within the application. HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Designer. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed. Designer now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request. A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added. Layers Panel now allows you to tag individual layers with a colour and display thumbnails with transparent backgrounds and at different sizes. New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quickly clipping/unclipping. New "Merge curves/Separate curves" commands. Grids now have an editable number of angle subdivisions. The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved. Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features such as bullets and numbering. Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes. Improved Freehand import slightly - failing to read all of a file shouldn't force it to produce a 'failed to load' response, instead we just load the bits that we *could* read New splash screen and Persona icons Brushes Designer 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any raster brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush. Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance. Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control. All pixel brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request. Adjustments The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls. The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request. The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten. PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved. The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider. 10. Hey there everyone so I have recently rediscovered my love for vectors and text in my art and was wanting to download some free fonts to try out a few things however I’ve run into a little snag. While free fonts are plentiful I can’t import them into affinity due to either my own incompetence of not knowing how to unzip files on a iPad so I can import the fonts or that I don’t know where to look for files that are not in a zip format as I only have a iPad to work with and have no access to a computer to unzip files there and transfer to my iPad. If anyone has any idea on overcoming this please tell me and also please share any awesome fonts zipped or unzipped for those who pass through. Thank you for your time and have a nice day.
  11. Hello, I am starting to re-learn Designer with the arrival of 1.7, and there are a few things that I didn't undertsand first time, with no improvement on understanding with the new version First one is a biggie: What on earth is OpencolorIO. Mind you, I don't work in animated movies and rarely handle LUTs (although it may happen). I checked the help files (didn't help), checked the OpenIO website (Very obscure language), and also this very forum (with a link in one thread refering to explanatory videos - link is broken on Vimeo) I am generally fairly familiar with colour management, but fail to get the concept of OpencolorIO... It's probably that they don't use the same jargon as I am. Can anyone either point me to simpler language references or maybe attempt at explaining themselves? (you can even use puppet socks if all fails ) Thanks so much in advance!
  12. Hello, I was wondering if within Affinity Designer is there a "Free transform tool" to allow perspective distort with shapes, this is something that can be done within illustrator where you can take two points and can move them together or further apart with equal distance like the example below. You can kinda do this with the "Corner" tool set to straight but this is set to only one angle when perspective distort can change the angle. Thank you for your time and I hope you have a great day.
  13. Leading (in paragraph settings) should default to 120% rather than 103% - like in other design software. Apart from 120% being the standard in other software like Adobe CS. 120% leading is known to be best practice in graphics design in general. It's just a better starting point that does not even have to be changed in most cases. Moreover a leading value of 120% has even been the default in the successors of Affinity products. If you don't want to change the default of 103%, please make the default leading value configurable in the settings dialog!
  14. Guys is 1.7.1 considered a stable release or better to hold off? Can I run it alongside 1.6 or go back to 1.6? I'm using it for production.

  16. I own Affinity Designer and use it to create wedding stationery which I outsource to a local printshop for printing. I always convert the documents to a PDF before emailing to the printshop and have never had any problems before now. This is what is showing up on their end (on my end it is just a nice white border). I have ungrouped every single element in the file and converted them all to curves. I feel like I've tried everything and I'm not sure what to do next to ensure it shows up correctly and can be printed for my customer! * NOTE this is a screenshot that they sent me. I do my work on an iMac and it looks like they use Windows but like I said I've never had any issues in the past with them!*
  17. Hi there, Is there any way to import or copy over a number of pdf profiles I use in PagePlus X9 (.PDF_Profile), into Affinity Publisher without redoing them all? Would be great to import table styles too... I have a ton I really don't want to have to redo! Also, any .ppp import support forthcoming? Many thanks,
  18. Hello guys! Recently I´ve updated my affinity designer version from 1.7.0. to 1.7.1.404 and so far I´m really enjoying it and loving it for it´s slick design and new functions. One function/tool I was really excited to play around with was the multibrush-tool. The thing is I still can´t find this tool although I did check out the various brush presets in designer as well as pixelpersona-mode. Maybe I overlooked something which is crucial in order to get the multibrush option to work? Thanks for any help!

  21. WREN

    The Box Set by Wren

About The Box Set is hundreds of vector and raster brushes made for Affinity Photo & Designer. Each brush was handmade using real materials scanned at high resolutions and crafted to simulate real media. I wanted the origin of the brushes to have a heritage of the materials they are simulating. Scanning pools of watercolor, swatches of paint, and stipples of charcoal contributed to creating brushes with the same idiosyncratic material magic. My only request is that you take these brushes, with their clever names, as suggestions. They work superbly out of the box, but I strongly encourage you to adjust the sliders, rearrange or remove the textures, and discover how they can suit your hand(s). Make. Discover. Repeat. Cheers and happy art making, -Jef (WREN) RASTER BRUSHES For use in Affinity Photo and Designer. The blending brush in the Oil Set is the only one exclusive to Affinity Photo. DRAFTING INK OIL Oil Brush Dynamics Most oil brushes have blending built into pen pressure. With a single brush and hue you can adjust the luminosity of the stroke- giving it an oily blend. The Brush's color in the example above is the color of the background. A normal pressure gives you the hue without any lightening or darkening. 22. Hello again :-) I do transit maps (diagrams) for fun in my spare time to relax. Here is another one of my recent works: a Lille (France) Tramway and Métro system map in my own interpretation (unofficial of course). I have included railways and their stations as well. The whole map is entirely done with Affinity Designer. If you have any thoughts on it or feedack this is much appreciated. Have a great day/night! Chris

  24. Hello everyone, I am a former graphic designer and logo designer. I got Affinity Designer 2 years ago, for graphic design purposes. But now I don't do these anymore. I want to try my hand at digital art. I know Affinity Photo is better for digital art. Is Affinity Designer good enough? or do I need Affinity Photo?
