  1. Say you want you want to draw a crow bar, how would i shade it on the curved parts using the gradient tool. So far i know how to shade a circle or rectangle using the gradient feature. And designs ive done which needed shading on curves ive had to make a few seperate darker layers and then used a blur tool to make it look like a gradual shadow. Do any of you know how this can be done an easier way? Thanks in Advance
  2. Hi, I have a question, though: are there any plans to make two new additions to the Affinity Suite? Maybe called Affinity Web (web design without coding app) and Affinity Effects (FX/VFX app)? Now, I know that after the release of Affinity Publisher (which I saw on the Affinity website), Affinity is going to be developed for other OS (such as Windows), linux, and iOS (which means that any other Affinity-based plans won't happen until those are done). But I am curious as to if Affinity Web and Affinity Effects is being considered. Keep up the great work with Affinity!
  3. What's the best way to save a sketch file, important to Affinity and export for Photoshop editing? I currently imported a PDF from sketch into Affinity, tried to export to PSD, but the file size is still zero bites. Any help or references would be greatly appreciated :)!
  4. I am trying to work with tiff files that are CMYK and fairly large. The "large" part isn't the problem - it's the fact that my files are improperly shown, just one part of it and never the whole image. I'm sure that there is nothing wrong with the file because they open just fine in photoshop right off the bat. Please help me out, I really need to get this done for a big project and would like to go Adobe-free as soon as humanly possible.
  5. 6. Just started using Designer, and Photo, this week. Made a quick wish list (feature request grid) sheet on google sheets, Thought I may as well share a public version for people to edit and add their own Wish Items (Feature Requests) to have all in one place. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rilNYZcXRp338ycLsity5Uw4xOXexxfJ3_DKNgzl9WM/edit?usp=sharing
  7. Okay so after much googling I cannot for the life of me locate the context menu. I want to convert a path to a selection. This is a little frustrating. I've attached a screen cap of my workspace. I think its the menu that comes up in the top giving contextual information about the tool I currently have selected. Bu I cannot find a convert to selection option in it for the pen tool. Is it somewhere else, or do I need to covert the path to curves? UPDATE: Okay so I found it, if you have the node selection tool active it doesn't so up. But if you have the pen tool it is visible.
  8. This article by fantastic writer Tom Koszyk https://medium.com/product-design-ux-ui/the-perfect-ux-ui-design-tool-13-things-designers-needs-most-f35589ce18e1 highlights some very good points about Affinity Designer and the competition. I think it was well written and should be taken seriously. My question is: Will the issues raised here be addressed? I want to see Designer win all of these competitions. Thanks.
  9. Hi everyone, I have been self publishing my first book, it is an origami tutorial ebook, everything goes well but recently both the Affinity Photo Beta and Affinity Designer Trial I using to process the photo diagram and designing the book have been expired, I want to continue my work with both apps but I can't afford to buy them. I tried to use other free open sources but their difficult interface and poor performance plus I have to relearn everything in this short time really didn't work for me! I have made a fundraiser page to collect donation to buy those apps. total $100 is needed, 5 dollar or 1 dollar per person will helped me a lot to get my goal. I will get my application result to university soon and later will start my university life if the application success. After that, I will have no time to make it. So, I hope I can get helped as soon as possible. Thanks and appreciated! Link: https://life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/help-chin-to-buy-apps-to-make-his-first-book/x/10397640 Some of the origami models will in the book(total 22 models tutorial, 3 sections, creative monster, movie characters and game characters, all designed by me!) 10. How can I save a file from affinity photo to jpg (300 dpi). Right now when I am export to jpg, the dpi is 96.
  11. Hi all. I recently purchased both Affinity Designer and Photo (The latest versions from the Apple Store, not the betas), and have been loving them. I have used and am familiar with Illustrator, Photoshop, Gimp and Inkscape. I have been trying to master Designer and Photo, and am liking the workflow over even adobe's offerings. I love the innovative personas. I have run into some issues though. In Designer, I went for the Warp tool (Edit>Transform>Warp in Photoshop) and could not find it. I tried the help menu, this forum, and searching for it, but came up blank. Is it labeled under some other name in Affinity? I also attempted to create a brush from a png i created, but Designer compressed the image until it was much flatter, ruining the brush for me. I know that I am probably just missing something in both scenarios, so I appreciate any attempt to educate me. Maybe I need the Betas? I apologize for my incompetence. Thanks very much, and to the devs, keep up the great work!
  12. Hi - I've been saving up funds to purchase Affinity for Mac and planned on purchasing it through the app store on July 23, 2015 (the last day the $39.99 price was active). When I attempted to purchase the app, the price was $49.99 even though it was 8:30pm July 23, 2015... I reached out to Serif customer support and they instructed me to bring up the issue here. Why wasn't the $39.99 price honored as advertised? Warm regards, jrr52
  13. Hello, Context: I use Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo, but I also use Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop at work. Generally, I don't need to export files to other formats (example: from .afdesign to .psd or .eps) but sometimes I need, and I have problems with it. Question: Is it possible to export .afdesign to .psd, .eps, .tiff, .pdf files and to preserve editability (layers) of those files when I open them with Photoshop or Illustrator,?.. Problem: I tried to export a file form .afdesign to other formats. Illustrator opened them as .jpeg's even if I saved them as .eps or .pdf. I want to save an coloured vector file .afdesign from multiple layers to an other file format, and to be able to edit that file (.eps, .pdf) in Illustrator. Is it possible? Do someone know which are the best practices for this particular case?.. Thank you! :)
  14. Hi everyone, I'm new on Affinity Designer and I got a problem concerning the path type. ( I've already checked the instructions in the helped menu but that doesn't work for me ). I hope you'll understand me because I work on the french version so that the traduction of the tools may not be exact. Well here's my problem: First I create the curve that will define the curve of my text, then I use the text box tool and I click on the curve I've juste created in order to insert a text that follows the curve. The text insertion zone is in the rectangular zone that defines the curve but the text doesn't follow the curve !! The photo attached shows where my text insertion zone is and how my text appears when I try the make a path type Thank you so much if someone here can help me, I've tried everything and I'd be very grateful ! :) Antonin
  15. Hello, today I tried to export a drawing via "Export Persona". As target I selected JPG. The export works, but the JPG quality settings are ignored. Whatever quality value (0%-100%) I select - the result is always the same: a very low quality JPG file. Even the file size doesn't change. Forgot to say: I'm using the AppStore version 1.2.1 Greetings, Martin
  16. I noticed you can add an Affinity designer icon to the toolbar in the photo beta. It currently doesn't do anything but will this eventually allow you to open your current file in Designer or perhaps even more awesome, just switch to Designer view! Also to what extent will you be able to edit Designer files in photo or visa versa? Will it be like how you can currently embed documents into other documents and editing an embedded file will open up the correct application? I've already tried to put a Designer file in a Photo file and when I clicked on it it I was surprised to find that it opens! Its cool that it opens up in Photo but a little weird that I don't get Designer Tools. I can edit a gradient but some options are missing. It would be really cool if the tools and windows would just shift to Designer view or Photo view just like persona's do!
  17. I'm hoping to move from Illustrator to Affinity. I have a PDF file that contains a small icon which I'm using for an iPhone app. I created the file using Illustrator, and have been using that PDF without problem. When I import the file into Affinity, make some changes, and then export as a PDF however, the image looks horrible in the app. It's blotchy and does not appear to contain opacity information (everything is at 100%). Am I missing something?
  18. I was watching a couple videos on the Affinity Vimeo account because I am a novice (I don't know exactly how to grade myself in design / artistic prowess) of graphic design and the such. so then I came across the IPad Affinity Designer Teaser. I instantly loved it, my eyes lit up with love, and then I thought of an app that lets you mirror your mac screen and thought that would be a beautiful mix if I could double click an embedded document and make it show up on my iPad screen through the iPad app (affinity designer or whatever the name would be as an app) and then edit the embedded document from there while it is also showing up on my mac as i edit it ! it would make embedded documents so much easier to control on this 13 inch macbook pro screen. just a little food for thought when and if the app of iPad comes. i started out graphic illustration and design on an iPad mini with procreate, adobe apps, and idraw. this would be beautiful to see the affinity app come to life :D
  19. First of all, please excuse if my question is not suitable for this forum, but it's been more than a week of thought process, experiments and still I cannot choose. The context is: I am no artist, I can't draw. I'm actually a Mathematician and a Physicist and I would like to make some educational materials for my students. I don't know code, but I'm starting to learn HTML stuff and also getting familiar with vector graphics. My workflow should be: - Design buttons and interface stuff; - Design educational illustrations (pulleys, inclines, springs - Physics related objects), not artistic, but somehow "attractive", "realistic" if you will; - Take all these and use them as resources in some HTML editor and animator (I already love Tumult's Hype 3). Now I'm stuck at choosing between AD, iDraw and Sketch 3. My impressions are: - AD is a great tool, very active development, but somehow channelled towards artists; - Sketch 3 is made for UI makers, it would be very easy to make buttons, sliders and interface stuff in it; - iDraw looks like a mixture of the both, but at a quite basic level. Best bet would probably be AD + Sketch 3, but they are quite expensive, even with the edu discount for Sketch 3. So, if it were to choose only one of the three, which one would you choose and how would your workflow look like? Do you have even other alternatives? Thank you.
  20. In photoshop I regularly used the feature trim transparent pixels so that my image would only contain the parts that were actually being used. Is there a feature like this in Affinity Designer?
  21. Hi all, I purchased Design Affinity of the App Store and every time I attempt to open an associated file from Finder, I get the follow error popup: "This trial has expired. We hope you enjoyed using Affinity Designer." Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! EDIT: Never mind. Turns out I had a copy of a trial version somewhere on my hard drive. Apologies. All fixed.
  22. Using Affinity 1.1.2 on Mac, system 10.7.5, when I export a document as EPS then go to the desktop, then come back to my document it has frozen, nothing is active and the spinning beach ball of death appears! Only force quit rectifies this! It happens every time, any ideas? Update - Just found the solution, downloaded the Beta version and it's fixed.
  23. Inline Help. Touch something to see what it does, its nomenclature and then read about the intentions and ambitions of the developers. One thing that makes software somewhat understandable is a naming convention for all that it does. But it’s only understandable once the foundations of how to think about how the designers and developers responsible for an app thought about what they were making. Which is the inverse of helpful. Once you master something you know it. Already. But getting to know something as complex as an alternative drawing program is a bit of a hill climb. Not because it’s a mountain, it’s not. It just takes time that most people simply don’t have. Recreational hill climbing simply isn’t on most people’s lists, so they hop back on the Adobe treadmill they know, despite realisation that it’s not going to get them anywhere near as fast as actually learning to walk up a hill. So the path to success for Affinity Designer is making the interface, operability, features, functions and paradigms of AD as intuitive and innate (and memorable) as soon is possible for any new user. That’s probably best done with one of those “?” buttons that activates a special mode whereby the user can click on anything and learn more about it. BUT… not in the limited manner these things have been done before, please, if you consider this, add some of these things: A lexicon/nomenclature descriptive passage of what and how this thing that’s been clicked on came to be named, and make this a link, so the user can then click on these words and goto more content specifically about these things as seen through the eyes of the AD creators. A quick “how to” and “WHY” and WHAT FOR!!! passage about this thing, whatever it is. Links to any further information about this thing that might be of use. Videos, tutorials, help files, related features, etc All in little categories, so that they know what they’re going to be clicking on. SUPER IDEAL: program a little animated demo of the thing doing its magic. I know. I’m asking a lot. But some thought has to go into how to make AD have affinity with the designers of the world, en masse. It has the guts to do it, it’s just a matter of putting on a good face, now.
  24. Hi, people, I've been playing with your great program, I found some issues: 1. When activate the "Marquee select on Touch", there's a little lag when you try to get (with window selection) a text frame, this is not present in any other object. 2. I didn't find, in Stroke, the inner option in order to have a line inside the object (the're just behing/center option). Very useful btw. 3. When switch to Outline View, every time you move the object, it lets a ghost. I know this issues could be the RAM or Video Card but this is not present on Illustrator. 4. This is not a bug, per se, but when you have a lot of layers it could be really nice to hide/unhide the other layers with one click. Just clicking on the check option from one layer, hold the click and select the other layers in one movement. 5. I'm not really sure if it's useful transforming the object to Curve in order to modify it with the Node Tool, it needs two actions when clicking on Node could, in theory, modify the object ipso facto. You just made a great software. Gracias, @MisterFulanito
