  1. In Designer 1.8.1, when performing Add, Subtract, or Xor there are serious bugs as shown in the screen capture below. Screen Recording 2020-03-03 at 11.56.29 PM.mov
  2. So this one is reproducible. Funny how I needed this shape, its the middle of the Centenary Bank logo if you were wondering. So I use the trimming from the letters expanded outlines and that gives me the cross bar. Next I Add the two parts together, and ... well ... that's when the mathematics breaks. Please see attached, it seems to be the top left and right sharp angles that are getting it confused. If you flip the cross bar over it welds to the to bottom points. Can some one please test this for me and confirm it's a bug. Running the latest (v1.8.0.585) Thanks. Not_able_to_join.afdesign
  3. I'm using the current Designer beta (1.8.0.5). I have been encouraged by the new beta and much appreciate the much improved add and divide geometry tools. It's worked well with some tests I've run. I decided to test it out with a project I'm doing and ran into a few issues. I traced my sketch using the brush tool using the standard vector brush (100% vector) with the controller set to pressure and the stabilizer on. I then selected it all and expanded it - no problems there! I again selected it all and hit the "add" geometry option and the entire design disappeared. It actually made a new layer called "curve" above my artboard with nothing in it. I went back a step and tried doing the design in smaller chunks... it worked fine in some areas and not in others. When I have done designs like this in Illustrator, I've usually filled in sections with the blob tool or done a live paint fill. With Affinity not having those options, I fill in with strokes - potentially creating more work for the program to process. It's possible I did something wrong in my process. I know I used the same brush settings for the entire piece when I created it, so everything should have the same properties. I did increase and decrease the brush size at times. i included a video of the problem as well as the file with two layers - the unedited initial strokes and the other layer after I had expanded it in the video and attempted to add together sections Thanks for any assistance! 4. With CTRL+left click on a layer icon it is possible to create a selection from the contents of this layer. In PS (I know, AP is not PS...) you can use SHIFT or ALT as modifiers for adding to, subtracting from or intersecting with an existing selection. I would like to see this in AP, too. For adding two or more layers to a single selection there is at least a workaround: make a group from the layers you want the selection from and CTRL+left click the group layer icon to get a selection made of the "summed up" content of each of the grouped layers. However I haven't either figured out a way to realize the other operations or how to modify an existing selection with "selection from layer".

  6. I have an issue with the Add operation in comparison to Illustrator. As of now, I don't believe there is a feature that allows us to select by fill or color, this prohibits me from being able to select only the black infill and then add or merge them together as one shape. In Illustrator, I can select by fill color, select "unite" in the pathfnder window (which I believe is the equivialent to "add" in affinity) my design comes out perfect. With affinity, since there is no option to select on by fill color, I have to select everything, then select "add" which fills in portions of the object with solid black.
  7. When I grab these individual fill pieces to merge them together with the boolean operation "Add", it turns them into an outline - . Most of the time this works just fine, but why in some cases might this result occur? thanks!
  8. When making a selection with the Selection Brush Tool the action of the Add and Subtract buttons are reversed.
  9. I can never seem to get the ADD, SUBTRACT, DIVIDE, COMBINE functions to work right, can someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong or if it's something with the software settings? https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cqfeDnZfQU
  10. Is that one new? I never noticed it before. THATS a thing i've been waiting for since my first use of AP. Thanks for implementing this!
  11. Geometry operations (Add, Subtract, etc.) take a very long time to complete. With a large number of objects indefinitely, or the program crashes. This also applies to the stable version (1.6.5) and is independent of the file. For the test, I checked the same file in Affinity Designer and Xara Designer Pro X10, which performs this operation in 1-2 seconds. I hope in new versions this feature will finally be working adequately.
  12. Looking for help... I'm still learning how to use Affinity Designer and am taking online classes. The task is to take 2 objects and merge them into 1 object by using the Add feature under Operations. For some reason it's not working. The toolbar items are not grayed out before I select my 2 objects and when I try to click the button, nothing is happening. I also cannot seem to customize my toolbar... that option is grayed out. Any ideas??
  13. Please add ruler to designer on ipad
  14. Hey everyone! When adding to selection, Designer for iPad does not take group levels into account. For example, when trying to select "Shape 1" and "Shape 3" from the following tree: Group 1 Shape 1 Shape 2 Group 2 Shape 3 Shape 4 , Designer for macOS would select exactly those. Designer for iPad, however, selects "Shape 1" and "Group 2". Also, there seems to be no "Add to selection" for Photo for iPad at all. Would be great if you could add that at some point. Best wishes, Shu
  15. Hello Am trying to learn and achieve a logo copy by drawing curves and am running into issues. 1. Is there a better way to achieve this logo trace ? the figure 1 is what am trying to achieve and have drawn curves to match the underlying drawing. I propose to subtract curves from the underlying light grey circle to get solid bodies. 2. When I go and expand the stroke to add/combine the curves for subtraction - I get the figure 2 issue with uneven boundaries. Can someone help me with combining the curves or show a better way to achieve the result ? thanks
  16. Greetings, I encountered this: I wanted to 'boolean add' those two shapes but was not able to get the right result. The fill mode is set on winding as shown in the first image (add1.jpg) but when I 'add' those two shapes I get the result as shown in second image (add2.jpg) (also same result if I would set fill mode on alternate or if I would press 'boolean divide') So because the letter 'r' in the image is drawn this way, I think, is why I have this issue. I know how I could bypass this but it would be a weird way :p I would've expect from the 'boolean add' button to just merge everything into one shape. I'm starting to use AD more and more, Awesome software! Thank you!
  17. Hello everyone! I've got some suggestions for improving the selection tools: 1: Could you add a shortcut to the tools that lets the user add to selection when holding shift? 2: Could you add a shortcut to the tools that lets the user subtract from the selection when holding alt? 3: Currently, when I select Mode -> Add, I can only add to selection if I am starting the loop outside of the current selection. It seems there is no way to start a loop inside the selection, because if I try to do so, I actually move the selection. This behaviour could be accessed with M (Rectangular Marquee Tool), though. Being able to start a loop inside the current selection is just easier sometimes. 4: Could you include the selection menu (from the menu bar) in the selection tools so that it is being displayed at cursor location when right clicking? 5: I guess this is a bug, but I am adding this here as it's about the same tool: Clicking L to select the Free Hand Selection Tool will not show a different cursor initially. The cursor will only be displayed after using the tool. Best wishes, Shu
  18. Hey everyone! Sometimes, curve operations will create sharp edges on one side of a node and a smooth or smart line on the other side, resulting in only one handle being there. Do you know if there is a way to add a second handle to a node without affecting the one that is already there? I could convert the node to "Smooth" or "Smart", but this will result in changes of the handle that's already present. Best wishes, Shu EDIT: Added a file and image to show the problem. test.afdesign: The original blue shape was drawn over the orange one, so I made nodes close to the orange shape, selected them and clicked "Action" -> "Break Curve", resulting in the four new blue curves (two can be deleted, which I disabled in the file). However, those curves are missing the handles that are required to make the adjustments shown in image.png (pink lines are supposed to be the adjusted outlines of the blue shapes). test.afdesign
  19. In this short tutorial I demonstrate the Geometry operations (add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine) in Affinity Designer 1.6.0 (destructively and non-destructively) with some samples. Keep on drawin' Norbert
  20. Heyo guys there are a couple of symbols in my project. I have combined a few of them into a group and created out of this group a new symbol (let’s call it symbolgroup). I want to add a new object into this symbolgroup. For example I create an rectangle and move this rectangle object in the layer panel into the symbolgroup – that work’s fine and every instance of the symbol group is updated properly. Now this new object I want to add is a symbol itself. When I move it in the symbolgroup the new symbol appears with unlinked attributes and no other instance of this symbolgroup is updated with the added symbol. Is there any way to do that, so that the added symbol has no unlinked attributes and every instance of the symbolgroup is updated? Because that didn’t worked the way I needed it, I tried to detach the symbolgroup, add the new symbol to the normal group and create out of this group a symbol again. But when I try to detach the symbolgroup every symbol in this group is also detached. So, is there a way to detach only the ‘parent’ symbol and none of the ‘child’-symbols? I have attached a file which illustrates the problem. Thank you guys for any help! Cheers! Symbol Test File.afdesign
  21. Would be great to have an OFFSET PATH feature , like Illustrator has, to reduce or enlarge an object. This is particularly hand on more complex objects when trying to resize in uniform. If we have something like this for desginer please let me know. Also something like CADTOOLS would be awesome. I am create a lot of graphics that go straight to a printer, and the measurement tools that CADTOOLS have are fast and easy to add dimensions to each piece of art on a artboard. Saves alot of time typing it in, and there is not mistaking size of art for the printer. Thanks Gary

  23. I'm trying to do Geometry operations with symbols but they seem to be greyed out or unavailable. ---Repro steps--- 1) Create a shape using the rectangle tool (M) 2) Go to view/studio/symbols 3) Create a symbol from the rectangle tool 4) Drag this newly created symbol onto the canvas multiple times 5) Select several symbols and note that you are unable to add, subtract, intersect, divide, combine Is there a way to do these things with symbols?
  24. Hi there, So I have just learned about adding and subtracting geometry and want to give it a go but my options are greyed out. All I can select is divide, though the objects are already divided. I would like to have the the red circle cut a hole in the black circle. Thanks!
  25. HI, I’d like to know how I can add an object to an existing symbol. I have a few instances of a symbol in an i,mage, and I want to add some extra detail. How can I do this? If I draw an object inside a symbol’s container, all the symbols in the image are not updated. How can I make it so that they are? Thanks.
