  1. Happy new year guys! I am in the middle of creating my first font (handwritten) and use Affinity Designer for designing the digits. However, the process is very tenacious right now. Since I'm new to font development, this is my current approach and setup. I created a document with a growing number of artboards, one artboard for each possible digit, ligature, symbol, and so on. I created each digit using a stroke with slightly varying line widths at the beginning and end. The program into which the digits are imported works with PDF, SVG, EPS among other (to me unknown) file formats – that's okay, because I can output each digit with the export persona named accordingly. SVG is the recommended file format. But I do run into some problems: The exported digit-files MUST NOT be exported as a path with a stroke The exported digit-files MUST consist of a single shape. The exported digit-files (even if points 1. and 2. were taken into account) as SVG are created with a white box in the size of the artboard around them, which lead to another step of selecting and deleting something manually that actually wasn't created in the first place while designing the digit. (The document is set up with the check for Transparent background under the Colour dialogue) I would have guessed now I can select all contents of the different artboards via shift+click in the layers palette and convert them with a single click on "Expand Stroke" - but this is not possible, because the selection is automatically limited to the artboards and not to the children. SelectChildrenOverMultipleArtboards.mov Furthermore, I would have liked to use an action/macro to merge the multiple curves of single letters like A, B, E or F into a single curve - but unfortunately the macro palette only exists in Affinity Photo, if I see it correctly. Does anyone have an idea how to convert the files without all the unnecessary additional effort/tasks? Cheers and have a nice day MrDoodlezz
  2. Windows 10 Home (1803), Designer 1.7.0.188. I have created multiple artboards in the same document and added some construction items. When I add more than ten construction items of any type, one item of the same type goes missing from the same - or another - artboard. See attached GIF for a working example where you can watch them disappear. I'm guessing that this isn't a deliberate design decision as it really limits the functionality.
  3. i have 20 artboards, zoomed to one specific, i want to drag symbol from symbols panel, designer zoomouts to all the boards...
  4. I can't seem to export my artboards; they just don't show up in the Export persona. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Just created a blank artboard (Artboard1) and that seems to work. Any ideas?
  5. Hello, Many apologies if it has already been requested, or if the functions already exists but I did search and can't find it. Is there a possibility to have bleeds for artboards? I would like them to be printed when I am designing, say a business card back and front on the same document with two artboards, and I would like to be able to visualise and/or print printers marks from there. For the moment I am using guides and they don't print (obviously :), but it would be nice to be able to visualise the artboards pretty much like if they were individual document. That would save lots of time when doing identity kits for example. (same doc contains business cards, letterheads, thank you cards etc...) Many thanks!
  6. Hello, This is frustrating and a bit hard to describe. It is probably clearest if you watch the video I've made: The setup is that I have multiple artboards of different aspect ratios and sizes. Then I've made a symbol (the blue background rectangle) and added an instance of it to every artboard, sized to fill the artboard. I then proceed to select an instance of the symbol, with sync enabled, and insert an object into the symbol --- first an image, and then a rectangle. As expected, the object is populated into all the symbol instances (yay!), but the aspect ratios/orientations of each instance seem to be ignored - so it looks skewed on the portrait artboards. I'm struggling to properly articulate the behaviour here, but hopefully the video makes it clearer. I do understand why this is happening I think - it seems only the orientation of the symbol instance I originally insert into is considered. But I'm sure you can agree the results are NOT the expect behaviour here! As you can probably see from my artboard setup I'm trying to make a set of artboards for producing social media images – the idea being, I have a symbol with an instance for every social media image size. Then I can just drag my content in and, voilá, Sync works its wonders and I have an image ready for each platform. As the video shows, this is kind of a big stumbling point for that use case... 7. Greetings, all. I'm loving Affinity Designer on my iPad. I don't have any experience with Illustrator, but have watched tutorials and thought about looking at it more seriously. Then AD came out and I pounced right away. I'm relatively new to working in vectors outside of some basic stuff with the pen tool in Photoshop, and the whole artboards thing is very new to me. SO! On to my actual question: is there a way to import a layered file into a pre-existing artboard? I have created an artboard to muck around with some business card ideas to promote myself as an artist. I can import an image just fine. Basically, I want to use the logo I created for my website for one side of the card, but I want to have access to the layers to move certain elements around or make adjustments for clarity as it is in a reduced size. I've already been able to download the layered file from the cloud and open it as it's own document in AD just fine. I'm just wondering if there's a means for me to add it in it's layered format onto my business card artboard. Thanks for any forthcoming enlightenment or revelations that what I'm trying to do can't be done! Toby
  8. Would like to see an option allowing the conversion of Designer files that include multiple Artboards to Publisher Pages. Currently it seems as though all Designer artboards are converted to a single giant page in Publisher. I have built a number of 24 - 60 "page" files using Designer in hopes that Publisher would have some option to see the artboards as pages. Bonus Request: Allow entering "Number of Pages in the New Document dialog, saving a step from going to the "Add Pages" dialog. thanks!
  9. I've been slowly transitioning to using Affinity Designer (and Photo) and loving it. However, there are a couple sore thumbs that I thought I would bring up here for future additions: The ability to right-click on the rulers and change your document measurement units. Paste in Front/Back. I've seen this mentioned a couple times before and the general attitude seems "Smart Object" functionality for placed items. The other day I placed 25 Affinity Photo documents into a big Designer file, and then went back and edited half of them in Photo. I assumed they would update, but after some digging learned that placing actually meant embedding the Photo documents inside my Designer project. I ended up creating a file that was over a gig and needed to re-edit and replace them. Clearer visual isolation of groups and subgroups. When I start clicking into various groups of elements, it can be difficult to tell what Inception-like layer I find myself in. The way Illustrator greys out outside elements really helps. Not having "background" selected by default in the Export persona. Always having artboards align to full pixels. I create a ton of artboards, and a big part of my Designer workflow has become taking time to go through them one-by-one and make sure there's no extra pixel rows or columns being added. And while I'm on a roll… 6. The ability to edit pathfinder objects after-the-fact. For example, if I subtract a circle from a square, it would be great to pop back in to this shape and adjust the circle instead of having to deal with the new curve outlines of the resulting shape. See Figma and Sketch as an example. Apologies if some of these are actually features that exist. I've tried to dig down on all of them and haven't found anything concrete. Keep up the good work!
  10. Hi, 1.6.1.93 gives a crash similar to the ones I had before. The file is attached below. To reproduce it, zoom to around 10-15%, then try moving Artboard1 behind Artboard2 several times. If you try enough, you will get a crash. Crash when moving.afdesign
  11. Hi Folks, It's been a while since I've been on here. Must mean I've been getting better with AP and AD... hmmm. Anyway.... Artboards, what are they all about? I understand the idea behind them, useful for showcasing projects etc but they do confuse me and I am after some help. I have created a number of social media ready type banners and profile photos etc that I plan to use across various social media platforms for a new upcoming venture. I have each of these created as separate files having used both AD and AP to create them. I then thought it would be good to have them printed so that I can pin them up in my office and mull them over. I thought what would be the best way to place all of these separate files onto a single sheet and print it to display it. Then I thought of artboards. Now first things first am I being daft and this isn't a good use of art boards in this situation? secondly. How the hell do I place all my separately created layer files onto a single artboard? is it possible or am I just getting the whole concept totally wrong and this isn't going to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated as alway. Thanks Mark
  12. I would love it if we could set artboards to automatically update sequential order. When I'm sandboxing a design I will often copy an artboard to make an alternate design. Right now I'm stuck with 20 "Artboard 1" artboards, and it would be great if there was a way the number could update when I copy the artboard (Artboard 1, Artboard 2, Artboard 3, etc.) It would be even better if I could set the name of the first artboard and have this happen. For example matchstick_001 turns into matchstick_002, matchstick_003, matchstick_004.
  13. So after another day, another found bug have two same artboards 85x55, one for CMYK, one for UV. sadly, they are not same size in PDF. and, the font is aswell a bit different on both artboards, even when both on same spot, same attributes. alt - dragged UV artboard from the CMYK artboard and changed all to one color for UV printing. when i tryed to find out whats happening, i tryed to open both pages in illustrator and putted them over. detail result is seen on PNG - gray is UV artboard, black is CMYK artboard - as left side was perfectly aligned, right side of the UV artboard was exactly 1crop mark width wider. There is something not nice going on using production / beta 104 bug.afdesign bug.pdf
  14. It would be nice if the Layers panel disclosure widgets had the same behavior as Finder's List view, expanding and collapsing all child containers when Option-clicked.
  15. Hello, Is there a way to export a document (book cover - 3 artboards), with bleed (5mm)? The only thing I have found is this: ...and it does not work for me. Either this method neither normal method (jus exporting PDF with print marks checked in options does not work. AD exports image to the exact size of documents, no graphics in bleed area. The impossibility of exporting my work with bleeds for print is a disaster for me. Please help, P.
  16. So I have made an arrangement with multiple artboards, for a modular UX concept. Problem is, I cannot export it. No matter what I try: - Either that "grey" background is missing (I tried to place a grey rectangle behind but that didn't solve all issues) - Sometimes the white background of the Artboards became transparent - Artboard titles were missing - No matter if I export Whole Document, Selected including Background or via Slices, either something is missing or the document is cropped for no reason I could make out. I simply want to export "What I See" - preferably in a higher resolution, into a single JPG or PNG. In the end I took screenshots and attached them together in Photo - but next time I work on this project I need to have the export working. Thanks for help.
  17. I have a document that has about 15 artboards. I have two different logos that I need to switch out. I created a layer for each logo and the layers are not attached to any art border. So by turning these layers on and off, I can change the logos on each artboard. The problem is when I go to export the document the logos do not export and I assume it is because they are not assigned to an artboard. Is there a way to have an element on every artboard that can be turned off with one click?
  18. This is probably an easy question to answer, but for some reason I am confused. Does anyone have an alternative way to explain artboards? something just isnt clicking for me. I feel like it should be an easy concept, so Im not sure if I am overthinking it? The way I understand it is that its like an area where if you were to be designing a brand identity, it would be where you place the business card, letterhead ...etc. So then its all in one place? I am doing the Workbook which is fantastic at explaining everything, but im at a loss so i must be overthinking it right?
  19. I have created several artboards, which are actually playing cards. I want to print the cards to a pdf. I have watched the videos but it isn't clear to me how to group the artboards on to a selected page size to optimize the number of cards on the page. To clarify, if I have (say) twelve Artboards of the same size and I want to print them on one sheet of portrait paper as three columns and four rows, is this possible? Is there a video to show how this is done? Many thanks. I love the software, but I am learning as I go.
  20. I am trialling AD and am having trouble placing secondary artboards, as an Adobe Illustrator user it may be that I am hanging on to old habits. I have successfully migrated from Adobe Photoshop to AP and wish to do the same with this AD vector package. The problem - General problems with additional artboards etc. I click on the Artboard tool and try to drag a new artboard adjacent to the existing one and it draws it OK, but then everything else goes black including the original artboard and pasteboard - content of the first artboard remains unaffected. The original artboard returns but the pasteboard stays black. Plus I seem to lose the layers and acquire new ones. The video tutorials are for earlier versions of AD and are different to how 1.6.0 behaves.
  21. I would love to be able to add a specific amount of artboards when I create a new document. I will create a icon set with 50+ icons and its a pain to need to set ut one artboard by itself.
  22. Hi, My wife has a craft hobby (obsession) and I regularly have to use AP and/or AD (ver 1.5 on MS Surface Pro 4) to edit or create small and medium bespoke items for her items. I use artboards to create small individual items - for example, a line of text that is curved or a series of small shapes. These are then printed off onto a special A4 transparent sticker to be cut out and applied to the created item. My question is: When I select a single small artboard to print, AD wants to print it in the center of the page, it is not economical or practical to print a single line of text - that is going to be cut out and stuck onto a birthday card for example - in the center of an A4 sheet. Is there a way to select my artboard for print, then move it or make it print at the top edge of the special A4 paper rather than the middle? At the moment I have to create a new A4 doc and copy and paste my selected item into the new docs top edge and print that. Not an ideal procedure. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Andy
  23. Is there a way to edit multiple artboards at the same time? I need to resize a pdf document for all pages. Each page is an artboard. When I click on multiple artboards, it gives a combined size, which is hard for resizing. Instead of clicking multiple artboards of 2x4 and it displaying 4.5x4...can I click multiple artboards and resize each to be 4x8?
  24. I'm seeing some regressions regarding slices/artboards in this beta when compared to version 1.5: AD doesn't create a new slice automatically when an artboard that already contains a slice is duplicated. AD apparently lost the ability to select artboards directly in screen when in the Export persona, so I must use the Layers panel. Can anyone confirm these problems? Thanks.
  25. Is there a way to print multiple artboards in Affinity Designer on one page with the bleed and crop marks applied to each artboard? Currently the crop marks are for the whole artboard group.
