    Colouring b&w photos

I've done some mono to colour in the past, but I've only recently begun to try it in AP. I scanned some old family photos a few years ago, and these two are of my grandfather and father (he's the younger one!) taken about 1949 or 1950, when Dad got his call-up. Granddad was a Special Police Constable, and they must have been showing off their uniforms. I'm pretty sure they were taken on Dad's camera. Anyway, to business -- I've reduced the images after recolouring, which cuts down the noise somewhat. The left-hand photo didn't look natural enough, so I tried Filters>Colors>Auto... (all four) and got the result on the right, which looks a bit more natural. Didn't work on Granddad though! I used a separate pixel layer for each colour, trying different combinations of blend mode and transparency till I was satisfied. Dad's eyes are a little stark, and there are some hard edges which need softening up ... but I'm still on the learning curve, and any constructive criticism will be welcome.
  2. It would be great if AP would come with a similar "Symbol" functionality as AD. Could as well be called "personal graphics library" ... consisting out of (single or multilayer) documents that could be inserted in various documents as "instances" ... (references - internal as well as external). I could think of a multitude of situations where such a functionality would be extremely useful (Logosd, Watermarks, linked content from externam sources etc). And since the general code for such a functionality is already implemented in AD ... and will be essential in any publishing product in the future ... Just my 2 cents ;-), Cheers, Timo
  3. Affinity Photo version 1.5.2 1. Auto select existing parameter to speed up data entry When the user clicks on the value box to enter a parameter value, the cursor is place at the position of the mouse click. It usually requires the user to select the entire contents and type over or backspace to clear the existing value. Data entry would be faster if AP auto select the entire value string when the user first click on the value box and the user just needs to enter a value over it. 2. Tone Mapping Persona - Collapsible Preset Area The tone mapping preset area is displayed permanently which occupied precious screen real estate especially if you are working a small monitor (eg. laptop). The preset is useful to get a starting point to work on, thereafter, most of the adjustments are carried out on the "studio" panel on the right. A collapsible preset area would give the user a bigger space to work on the image. 3. Default UI color Dark gray on even darker gray is hard to distinguish. This is especially true for the dynamic toolbar that shows the various mode for each tool the user is working on. For example, in the Pen tool, it is hard to distinguish at a glance which mode (pen mode, smart mode, polygon mode, ...) the pen is currently in. 4. Crop tool. Provide a modifier key to change the cursor from selection to move (vice versa) When the user first select the crop tool, the cursor is default to selection point even though the crop frame is displayed. The user can click on the edge handles to reside the crop frame or directly draw the crop frame using the selection point. If the user first change the the crop ratio, the selection point remains even though the crop frame is already displayed. There is no way to move the existing crop frame other than to draw a new one. It would be better to have a modifier key to toggle between selection cursor or move cursor. 5. HSL dialog. Ability to display all the colours instead of using a drop down In the HSL, it would be nice to display the colour swatch for the user to select instead of using a slower drop down menu. This way, the user can quickly and intuitively select the colours to adjust. 6. Photo / Developer Personas. Adjusting saturation & vibrance. In the Photo Persona, colour saturation is adjusted on the HSL adjustment whereas vibrance has a separate adjustment. In the Developer Persona, saturation and vibrance are grouped together. Would it be possible to standardise these adjustment in the two personas? 7. Blend mode I am a novice in using the blend mode and I find it hard to visualise the result. I'm wondering if an assistant and/or some presets would be useful to help users in utilising this feature.
  4. It would be nice to have the "extreme" option in the raw developer exposure settings. This would allow users to develop highly under exposed images, for example, when the flash did not go off.

  6. Hi I'd like to apply borders to finished work. In programs such as PS or the old Paint Shop Pro, I used to select all>contract by [x] pixels>invert selection>apply effect to selected area. Is there a similar procedure for AP? Thanks

    Yet another photo

As my laptop won't display RAW files, I run every new set of photos through a batch job to create jpeg thumbnails at 600 pixels wide. Because there's no tweaking done in development, I sometimes get some sad-looking results; fortunately, the RAW file will usually turn out OK with a bit of fiddling about. (Sorry -- that's a disrespectful way to describe the amazing capabilities of Affinity Photo! I mean, with some carefully considered image manipulation :)) So here's a very under-exposed photo of a toucan, shot against a very bright sky. If I'd still been shooting in jpg, I'd have been very disappointed: there's very little room for improvement. Now here's the fidd manipulated version. I resized it to 800 px to post on Facebook; I'll do it full size for my portfolio ... but not today.

    More shared photographs

As some of you folks are asking for more photos, here are a couple from my garden this week. Although the originals are biggish (22Mb) RAW files from my camera, I've bolied them down to 800 x 600 pixels to share on Facebook. I must get round to having some full-size printing done! OK, this is my bottle-brush tree (Callistemon), which is flowering for the first time in a few years. First is the finished photo as I developed it ... Next, I went back and developed the RAW file three times, setting the exposure to -2, 0, and 1.5, and processed them as HDR. I applied some tone mapping and a little local contrast (but didn't make a note of the values -- sorry!), applied a vignette with exposure +2, and painted a little extra white around the edges and corners to improve the vignette. Finally, this is an 800 x 600 px selection from the first file before I resized it, to show the detail of the flowers. There's quite a bit of noise, as you can see, even though I shot it at 100 ISO. Time to get a decent camera!

    Vector images from photos

I'm being a bit cheeky, I have to admit! Someone a while back pointed out that you can pass vector images from DrawPlus to AD by exporting them as PDFs. The Autotrace studio in DP is a lot of fun to play with, and these pics were put through it with suitably tweaked parameters. I imported the PDFs into AP to clean them up a little and trim any white space from the edges. I don't claim any artistic merit (except in the Dad-ist sense that I chose the originals and decided which ones to post and which ones weren't good enough). But I like the kind of near-abstract decomposition that often comes out, and I shall take inspiration and have a go at making some vector jobs entirely by hand.
  11. Hi guys, So, basically the title says it all, AP jitters when zooming/enabling/disabling layers, basically at every click of the mouse AP decides to jitter around. I provided a performance setting and an example in the video below, any suggestion on how to solve it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6DofUr5zp0&feature=youtu.be Please turn on the resolution to 1080p, and no, the preview jitter is not youtube fault, is far more apparent on my screen when working with AP yeah I don't know hot to post a youtube link since it gets deleted so I just attached a .txt file with the link inside, no it's not spam, no it's not ads
  12. Hi everyone I've done a macro with 3 elipses for dodge and burning like lightroom but in ap, one for dodge other for burn and another for contrast. How to use 1.import the macro 2. clic on the dodge elipse macro but ensure the fill color is white 3.clic on the burn elipse macro but ensure the fill color is black. 4.Clic on the contrast macro but ensure the fill color is white 5. Select the move tool [v] for modifying and moving the elipse. You can play with opacity for making stonger or softer the effect or even change the blend mode. The macros will generate an elipse with a name like dodge, burn and contrast for that reason you need to set the correct color fill before apply the macro, and the other reson is because affinity photo didn't allow me record fill colors with elipses. Enjoy :) D&B with elipses.zip
  13. I've received an offer from Serif for Photozoom Pro 6, the dedicated enlargement software I previously used with Photoplus in various incarnations. Since moving to Affinity Photo, I've been very happy with the Enlarge Document function in AP - my question, does Photozoom Pro produce enlargements any better than AP can natively, or are elements of the Photozoom algorithms part of the AP process? I'd be interested if anyone has done any comparitive tests. Thanks chaps.
  14. Hi, not sure if this is AP or Firefox problem, but if I copy an image in Firefox, and paste it into an existing document - its size is wrong - instead of 218px x 218px it's put into the document with dimensions 290.7px x 290.7px. The problem only exist on pasting into an existing document, if I use the option to create a new document from the clipboard, the size of the image is correct. Also if I copy-paste from Chrome, there is no problem... I have Firefox 52.1.1 (32-bit) on Windows 7 64-bit If that matters, I was copying a book cover image from the Amazon's Kindle daily deals page -> http://amzn.to/2pZUOhm
  15. Here's my first try and doing a double exposure. I always loved the style and wanted to see if I could do it. Both underlying photos were taken by me and then edited in Affinity Photo. Comments and critique welcome!
  16. Good day! I'm fairly new to the whole photography thing let along photo editing. I'm absolutely in love with Affinity and its ease of use and user interface. Anyways, here's a few random shots that I've done and edited with AP. Comments and critique welcome!
  17. open up 25 canon RAW files, 80D, 24MP. AP grinds to a halt. doing anything to develop the image is nothing but extreme sluggishness and beachballs. open task monitor and the answer is clear, AP is allocation very large chunks of RAM per image. I have a brand new MBP 15" 2016 TB and I'm stuck at 16gb whether I like it or not. So its very easy to hit this limit. In task manager, AP is taking about 9gb of real ram and another 8gb of compressed ram that spills into VM. Once VM is involved things grind to a halt as RAM is compressed / expanded and swapped to disk, even on the super fast 2GB/sec SSD on my machine. Even adjusting prefs to tell AP NOT to use all the RAM in the machine ( default setting, another bug ) it still over flows and used more RAM than allocated to it. AP should never try to use 100% of the RAM for obvious reasons. At best it should maybe be 50-65% as a default value, but then actually respect that setting. On OS X I find the OS + maybe a few small apps like email use about 4.5 to 5gb of RAM at idle. That aside, it seems that SP is allocating just under 1gb per image where the image = 6000X4000 @ 16bits. it should be about 192mb for that image @ 16 bits in RGBA. even another full size buffer is 192X2. looks like AP is allocating 4 additional image buffers to burn thru RAM like that. way too much. perhaps a user pref is needed to tell AP how many image buffers to use per image.... In comparison, PS can have this many images open w/o slow downs, beachballs, etc so AP needs to fix how it is allocating RAM to respect the users settings in prefs on how much to use, and to avoid spilling into comressed RAM and then VM for a HUGE performance hit that brings the app to a near standstill. The workaround : only open a couple images at a time to avoid running out of RAM :(
  18. When I change the type of grid from the drop down list (for example from triangular to isometric) the current grid that is shown over the image does not update. I was surprised by the huge amount of choice for grid types, and wanted to see what each one is but in order to show the newly selected type of grid, it appears that I have to change settings randomly after selecting a new grid type in order for Affinity Photo 'notice' and update the grid. Computer: Windows 10 Home 64 bit 8Gb ram Intel i5-6400 (2.7ghz) nVidia 1060 3Gb
Selecciones CMY y Aplicar Imagen.zip

  21. Apply image and color ranges from ps in ap macros Hi everyone I've been working in a way for making apply image and color ranges from photoshop in affinity photo and finally I've done a macro with a function like that. Affinity photo doesn't have an option for making selections of CMY, but photoshop in color ranges has these options and rgb and highlights, midtones and shadows which ap has. I've done a macro with similar functions for apply image and three macros for making selections of CMY. How to use 1.Import macros 2.Select your current image in which you are working (obviosly) 3.Apply the macro apply image and it'll pop up a sliders for adjusting settings like midtones (gamma) shadows and highlights. These settings are for showing or hidding parts of the mask. 4.Apply and adjustment layer like curves and drag the generated mask into the curves as a child layer. 5.Now you will see the mask in black and white and you can alt + clic to see the mask. 6.adjust the parameters of curves 7. See magic For the CMY macros you can select your image and apply the macro for see the CMY selections for fine tunning and after selection you can add an adjustment layer like curves and i'll mask automatically the CMY selections. I hope this be useful for you. Selections CMY and apply image.zip
