  1. Hi, I'm a relative newb to Affinity Photo but have some photo editing experience with Photoshop & others. The issue I'm having is with scanning an image at the highest resolution for editing in AP. I have a Brother Ds-720D and am using NAPS2 as the scanner software on a Windows 10 machine. I am scanning at 1200 DPI. Scanned images when viewed in NAPS2 when zoomed to the extreme (1000%) show almost no sign of pixelation. When I try to export in any photo image format - png, jpeg or tiff - the output file is quite pixelated. Viewing the file properties of the exported file shows it's reduced the image to 200DPI. From what I can see I've set the NAPS2 preferences for the highest quality output. So ... I tried exporting as PDF and the output file when viewed using Adobe Reader with extreme zoom (1000%) looks identical to the image as viewed in NAPS2. Ok, so now I seem to be getting somewhere ... However, when I try to open the PDF in Affinity Photo the maximum DPI I can select for the import is 400. If I go with that setting the imported PDF is significantly better than the tiff import but is still quite a bit more pixelated than viewing the PDF in Adobe Reader. [example below with the AP import on top with the Adobe Reader view below] BTW, I've set the View Quality setting in AP to Bilinear (Best Quality), so that is not the issue. Is there any way to import my PDF at 120DPI? If not, can anyone suggest a better way to get the highest quality scan into AP? The image is a crusty old, low-quality set of four snaps from a photo booth (yeah, a real one) from when my wife & I first started dating over 20 years ago. We'd like to crop the four images, clean them up somewhat and blow up prints from them. I realise they'll always look like low-quality photos and I'm happy to roll with those artefacts. What I want to try to avoid is adding additional processing artefacts. Hope you can help. Cheers, Stew
  2. Is there a way in AP (Windows) to save different Settings in the optionbar. One example of several settings: I prefer to work with the gradiant tool - Type Linear white to black. Unfortunately, affinity can not remember such Settings. Thank you for a answere. Armin 60/5000
  3. Just saw this market map of the Digital Photo Industry ... Introducing the first market map of the Digital Photo Industry a bigger map picture from Dpreview ... and wondered that Affinity Photo isn't a named part of the Desktop Editors and Mobile Apps categories there. Maybe Serif should tell them to be added there too (?).
  4. Here's a tiny list of topics within Affinity Photo for Windows I'd like to address as important improvements that need implementation from a professional photographers point of view (Based on version 1.5.1.54 Final). I'm aware that some points have been mentioned by other useres already. It would be great to get some kind of feedback from serif staff with regards to the likelyhood of implementation. I'll try to extend this list when new topics come up. Please do not see most of these points as "nice to have" additions or "customer dreaming", but essential improvements required(!) for any kind of professional workflow. The list does not cover obvious minor or major bugs as they get tracked by serif staff anyhow I suppose. As well I'm aware that some of my suggestions have already internally been rejected and implemented differently as "By Design" - maybe there's a chance to reconsider this decisions. A suggestion could be to start a discussion in the forum with your customers to see what's their preferred way to handle the implementation. Basic workflow/Window handling: - When undocking a document window from the workspace it should automatically adapt document window to document size (or maximum window size with scrollbars if document is larger) - maybe selectable in the preferences - When zooming in or out a document window size should automatically adapt to document size (or maximum window size with scrollbars if document is larger) - maybe as a setting selectable in the preferences - After resizing an undocked window the document shoud automatically be centered within the new window dimensions - One should be able to drag and drop a layer from one document into another document (not just with CTRL+c CTRL+v) - The area where one can grab the frame of a window for resizing shoud be enlarged - Pressing ENTER or ESC should confirm or cancel a dialog - as defined in windows UI standards (e.g. in crop mode none of the keys work) Macros: - (multiple) layer selection should be recordable - colour assignment to objects should be recordable - for macros it would be good if resizing of a document could be based on a maximum side lenght regardles if the document is landscape or portrait - Make conditional decisions available (e.g.: IF (DocHight > DocWidth) THAN ... ELSE ...) Alternatively include some kind of JavaScript language. - Include "Export" functionality with parameters as part of Macro recording - Add customizable keyboard shortcuts to dedicated macros Other: - it would be important to be able to make a selection based on a colour(range) (including tolerance, adding and subtracting from a previously chosen colour range) - not only based on the 3 base colour as currently implemented. - if unproportional cropping is selected it would be good to temporarily switch to "original proportion" cropping or fixing the current proportion by pressing the Alt or Ctrl key - optional parameter adaption for certain filters (e.g. gaussian blur) when resizing a document to fit the new dimensions. Currently unadapted parameters of these filters wreck every document after resizing. - icon size in the layer panel should be definable (similar to PS where 3 sizes are available) - I'd prefere to have one common command (keyboard shortcut) for the brush size and not a seperate one for each tool. - Saving setting and content for parameter fileds and pathes would save much time. Just some exaples: 1) Export preferences (They are continuously back to stupid *.png instead my predefinde personal settings ...) 2) Parameter for live filters (e.g. gaussian blur or unsharp mask) 3) Parameter for fx settings 4) Cropping Mode (setting keeps switching back to useless "unconditioned") 5) Resize method (e.g. bilinear/bicubic) - at least the standard setting should be something usable instead of bilinear! - Assistant settings should be global and part of the preferences (e.g. adding new layers on same levels as selected layer or as a child) - Make all variables available in fields that allow calculations (e.g. transforming) - Make the frequency layer seperation parameters editable like in live filters - Increase maximum size of liquify brush - Increase parameter range of many FX settings - Would like to save a list of export settings (Slices) as one preference in the Export persona - a proper "flatten image" and "flatten group" command would be nice (combining layer in AP is not intuitive and effortless at all! Just take a look how PS does it ...) - auto-adapt parameters of filters when scaling objects (e.g. gaussian blur, fx-settings) - in low resoloution the fx parameters are by far not precise enough (e.g. a picture with 800x600px can't deal wit a shadow in a watermark between 0.1 and 0.0 px-precision) - make live adjustments/filters masks directly visible as an overlay. - When a graphic in the OS (e.g. Windows) is copied via CTRL-C it would be great when clicking on "new document" within AP the dimensions of the clipboard picture would be automatically copied as a preset for this new document - assistant should add new layer even when flood fill tool is used - Numerical scaling through the transformation dialog should optionally allow scling of textsize in related objects as well. - Would be nice to display Colour Mode and bit depth behind the filename in the document window (as PS does it) - Help files often does not open (wrong focus, dialog open that does not recognise help key) - include "AutoClip" option in filters that change document or layer dimensions (e.g. most of the distortion filters) - A new document should automatically have a pixel layer as the background layer (alternatively all tools that require a pixel layer should automatically add this layer - maybe an extension of the assistant) - Metadata Editor (This is a high priority for everyone supplying stock content) - Flood Fill with bitmap pattern - Include a small button next to the fg/bg colour circle to reset it to black/white - Global definition of standard grid setting - Definition of standard output profile from the develop persona - Provide picture thumbnails in Windows File Explorer - Spiral Tool - Improved Transform panel functionality (e.g. radius for circles) Performance: - Serious improvement of InPainting tool performance! - Multiple layer performance Cheers, Timo
  5. When manipulating a layer mask by using the paint brush tool or even simply inverting it, the corresponding layer icon/thumbnail in the layer stack does not update.
  6. After placing an image file in a document the newly created layer is of the "Image"-type, which might be ok to avoid recompressing the image, if you plan to export the document as pdf. But it is necessary to ratserize this layer in order to make pixel manipulations to it. I forget to do this almost every time I place an image, thus pixel manipulations just do not work but AP does not even complain that it is an image layer I want to work on... So it would be very handy to have a menu item "Place As Pixel Layer...". I think this could be solved by a macro, but I would prefer the command in the "File" menu.
  7. While in app photo on ipad if I choose to open the image from here in another app, i can do so with a certain amount of apps, all I do is select the one I like and disable the others. Is it possible to do this with the AP app ?
  8. When using Apply Image equations, I am expecting to see a completely greyscale image when Da and Db are set to constant 0 in LAB space, however I see a heavy blue tint. See attached screenshot, left side should be greyscale instead.
  9. Hi there, I'm a new user of AP (1.4.2), which I really find great! I'm running it on my MacBookPro retina 13" mid 2014 (16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Intel Iris 1536MB) with El Capitain 10.11.6 (everything up to date and working fine so far). Unfortunately, I have an issue that is seriously affecting my activity with AP: When I open a file (whatever the size, even a few Kb jpeg), it's sufficient to make any selection (even a simple squared one) to make the machine starting to overheat and get the fan running at full speed. This happen just by having any selection active (i.e. marching ants). If I remove the selection, the machine cools down... I also tried to set the "Use only integrated GPU" option, but it didn't help... By de-selecting the "OpenGL Hardware" option things seems to get better , but the performances are quite severely affected. I searched in the forum, and I see that with the beta version someone reported a similar issue (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/8723-laptop-running-hot/) but it seems that everything was fixed at that time.. My point is: Is it normal such a behavior on a machine that is quite new and well featured? (I'm using my macbookpro even for real-time HD video editing without anything like that. Useless to say: With PS CS6 it is working perfectly without any performance issue). I hope someone can help me. Let me know should you need more information. Many thanks in advance! Marco
  10. I've noticed this on AP 1.5, and now I find it's present on 1.6 too. I'm using mesh warp to form mouth shapes for lip synching an animation. (I'll share it with you all on New Year's Eve ) I have two layers, one for the top lip and one for the bottom. When I click to set a node, the active layer moves very slightly down and right. When the warp is applied the layer moves back to the correct position, so it's not a problem as far as the finished image is concerned, but it does make it difficult to know precisely where I'm warping to. It only seems to be a small number of pixels, and for this application such tiny errors as might arise are negligible; but it would be a problem in other cases. Here's a screen shot with three layers (the hand is on top): This is the active layer (top lip): And the three layers before warping: And this animated gif shows the layer 'jumping' when a node is created: And in case you're wondering, it's one of Raphael's putti ... I'm running Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with 8GB of RAM.
  11. Hi This already raised its head in beta: Might be related to this and this (I didn't look further back in the bug reports). For me the following behaviour is consistent at the moment: - I can't open 6 jpeg files (ca. 8 MB each) by dragging them onto the AP icon - The files have not been worked on before - Force quitting AP and trying again doesn't help BUT - After restarting my Macbook I can open the same files as expected So it's a cache problem? (The message in the attachment is what I get when I try to close AP.)
  12. Hi Folks, I'm after some help again.... So I really admire two very very good automotive photographers... Amy Shore and Laurent Nivalle. Both have a similar(ish) style and this extends to their editing process. I have read numerous interviews with both of them and they both mainly use Photoshop (Sorry to swear!) rather than lightroom and I am very keen to try and re-caprture their respective styles but by using Affinity Photo. I have attached two files which are photos from both Laurent and Amy respectively. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction to try and obtain the same style? Obviously I don't want to be copying their styles out right as that is not what photography is all about but I am very curious as to how to achieve this. Thanks folks, hope you can help. Regards Mark All credit for the attached two images go to Amy and Laurent.
  13. hello all, anyone knows how to use the nik hdr efex pluing within affinity photo? in order to create a true hdr image, multiple exposures of the same pic are needed. the problem is, how can they passed simultaneously from affinity photo to the plugin? the plugins menu gets grayed if more than one layer is selected. this prevents passing more than one image to nik hdr efex. i only could use it outside AP until now, making it load multiple tiff or jpeg files. maybe i am missing something obvious... any suggestion would be appreciated. thanks, stefano
  14. Hi, I can't stitch slanted Panoramas in AP 1.6. This issue exists since AP 1.5.x
  15. Hi I'd like to see the ability to edit masks easily now is very hard to do it, it would be nice to be able to edit masks with levels or curves or something so
  16. when I choose to export TIFF e.g. it does not make a whole lot of sense to offer PNG etc. options and presets? cheers
  17. It would be great if AP would come with a similar "Symbol" functionality as AD. Could as well be called "personal graphics library" ... consisting out of (single or multilayer) documents that could be inserted in various documents as "instances" ... (references - internal as well as external). I could think of a multitude of situations where such a functionality would be extremely useful (Logosd, Watermarks, linked content from externam sources etc). And since the general code for such a functionality is already implemented in AD ... and will be essential in any publishing product in the future ... Just my 2 cents ;-), Cheers, Timo
  18. It would be nice to have the "extreme" option in the raw developer exposure settings. This would allow users to develop highly under exposed images, for example, when the flash did not go off.
  19. Affinity Photo version 1.5.2 1. Auto select existing parameter to speed up data entry When the user clicks on the value box to enter a parameter value, the cursor is place at the position of the mouse click. It usually requires the user to select the entire contents and type over or backspace to clear the existing value. Data entry would be faster if AP auto select the entire value string when the user first click on the value box and the user just needs to enter a value over it. 2. Tone Mapping Persona - Collapsible Preset Area The tone mapping preset area is displayed permanently which occupied precious screen real estate especially if you are working a small monitor (eg. laptop). The preset is useful to get a starting point to work on, thereafter, most of the adjustments are carried out on the "studio" panel on the right. A collapsible preset area would give the user a bigger space to work on the image. 3. Default UI color Dark gray on even darker gray is hard to distinguish. This is especially true for the dynamic toolbar that shows the various mode for each tool the user is working on. For example, in the Pen tool, it is hard to distinguish at a glance which mode (pen mode, smart mode, polygon mode, ...) the pen is currently in. 4. Crop tool. Provide a modifier key to change the cursor from selection to move (vice versa) When the user first select the crop tool, the cursor is default to selection point even though the crop frame is displayed. The user can click on the edge handles to reside the crop frame or directly draw the crop frame using the selection point. If the user first change the the crop ratio, the selection point remains even though the crop frame is already displayed. There is no way to move the existing crop frame other than to draw a new one. It would be better to have a modifier key to toggle between selection cursor or move cursor. 5. HSL dialog. Ability to display all the colours instead of using a drop down In the HSL, it would be nice to display the colour swatch for the user to select instead of using a slower drop down menu. This way, the user can quickly and intuitively select the colours to adjust. 6. Photo / Developer Personas. Adjusting saturation & vibrance. In the Photo Persona, colour saturation is adjusted on the HSL adjustment whereas vibrance has a separate adjustment. In the Developer Persona, saturation and vibrance are grouped together. Would it be possible to standardise these adjustment in the two personas? 7. Blend mode I am a novice in using the blend mode and I find it hard to visualise the result. I'm wondering if an assistant and/or some presets would be useful to help users in utilising this feature.
  20. Hi I'd like to apply borders to finished work. In programs such as PS or the old Paint Shop Pro, I used to select all>contract by [x] pixels>invert selection>apply effect to selected area. Is there a similar procedure for AP? Thanks
  21. Hi guys, So, basically the title says it all, AP jitters when zooming/enabling/disabling layers, basically at every click of the mouse AP decides to jitter around. I provided a performance setting and an example in the video below, any suggestion on how to solve it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6DofUr5zp0&feature=youtu.be Please turn on the resolution to 1080p, and no, the preview jitter is not youtube fault, is far more apparent on my screen when working with AP yeah I don't know hot to post a youtube link since it gets deleted so I just attached a .txt file with the link inside, no it's not spam, no it's not ads
  22. I've received an offer from Serif for Photozoom Pro 6, the dedicated enlargement software I previously used with Photoplus in various incarnations. Since moving to Affinity Photo, I've been very happy with the Enlarge Document function in AP - my question, does Photozoom Pro produce enlargements any better than AP can natively, or are elements of the Photozoom algorithms part of the AP process? I'd be interested if anyone has done any comparitive tests. Thanks chaps.
  23. Hi, not sure if this is AP or Firefox problem, but if I copy an image in Firefox, and paste it into an existing document - its size is wrong - instead of 218px x 218px it's put into the document with dimensions 290.7px x 290.7px. The problem only exist on pasting into an existing document, if I use the option to create a new document from the clipboard, the size of the image is correct. Also if I copy-paste from Chrome, there is no problem... I have Firefox 52.1.1 (32-bit) on Windows 7 64-bit If that matters, I was copying a book cover image from the Amazon's Kindle daily deals page -> http://amzn.to/2pZUOhm
  24. open up 25 canon RAW files, 80D, 24MP. AP grinds to a halt. doing anything to develop the image is nothing but extreme sluggishness and beachballs. open task monitor and the answer is clear, AP is allocation very large chunks of RAM per image. I have a brand new MBP 15" 2016 TB and I'm stuck at 16gb whether I like it or not. So its very easy to hit this limit. In task manager, AP is taking about 9gb of real ram and another 8gb of compressed ram that spills into VM. Once VM is involved things grind to a halt as RAM is compressed / expanded and swapped to disk, even on the super fast 2GB/sec SSD on my machine. Even adjusting prefs to tell AP NOT to use all the RAM in the machine ( default setting, another bug ) it still over flows and used more RAM than allocated to it. AP should never try to use 100% of the RAM for obvious reasons. At best it should maybe be 50-65% as a default value, but then actually respect that setting. On OS X I find the OS + maybe a few small apps like email use about 4.5 to 5gb of RAM at idle. That aside, it seems that SP is allocating just under 1gb per image where the image = 6000X4000 @ 16bits. it should be about 192mb for that image @ 16 bits in RGBA. even another full size buffer is 192X2. looks like AP is allocating 4 additional image buffers to burn thru RAM like that. way too much. perhaps a user pref is needed to tell AP how many image buffers to use per image.... In comparison, PS can have this many images open w/o slow downs, beachballs, etc so AP needs to fix how it is allocating RAM to respect the users settings in prefs on how much to use, and to avoid spilling into comressed RAM and then VM for a HUGE performance hit that brings the app to a near standstill. The workaround : only open a couple images at a time to avoid running out of RAM :(
  25. When I change the type of grid from the drop down list (for example from triangular to isometric) the current grid that is shown over the image does not update. I was surprised by the huge amount of choice for grid types, and wanted to see what each one is but in order to show the newly selected type of grid, it appears that I have to change settings randomly after selecting a new grid type in order for Affinity Photo 'notice' and update the grid. Computer: Windows 10 Home 64 bit 8Gb ram Intel i5-6400 (2.7ghz) nVidia 1060 3Gb
