  1. Apps: Photo and Designer Platforms: All In Export Persona Filename is now available as a token variable for building either folder paths or exported filenames of your slices. This is available with two options: Document Name = the name of the document without the file extension Document Filename = the name of the document including the file extension For example if you had a document called "Social Ads.afdesign" which contained artboards named "Version 1", "Version 2", etc. you could now specify your path to be Document name like below: And this will automatically create a folder called "Social Ads" with your slices being exported within it: Social Ads/Version 1.png Social Ads/Version 2.png etc. You can also use these tokens as part of your exported file names, e.g. if you set up as below... That would result in your exported files being named: Social Ads (Version 1).png Social Ads (Version 2).png etc. Additional note Worth a reminder when testing these feature you can copy and paste export set ups from one slice to another slice using the copy / paste buttons towards the top of the panel. You can also create your own export set up presets from the burger menu in the slices panel.
  2. I just want to say a big thank you to Serif for adding the filename as an Export variable in the new 2.4.0 release. This is going to save a lot of time in my particular workflow. Thanks for listening. Now to checkout the other new features.
  3. I'm importing an Illustrator (ai) design for a rework of the content. Designer imports everything fine but on closer examination the text elements have moved slightly. Comparing outlines to the original some text elements are spot on and others are moved horizontally. It is as if they have been (randomly?) kerned/tracked. The main difference is that centred text is no longer exactly centred. Here's a sample: The longer line is the editable text element, the shorter one the outlines from the print-ready PDF previously created by Illustrator. So, I'm guessing either I don't have the correct fonts installed (although I'm using client supplied ones) or the illustrator file uses some proprietary tweaks that aren't guaranteed to export/import correctly? Tracking changes don't give me exact alignment and I'm really not keen on the idea of manually kerning all the text. Any thoughts?
  4. As I've spent more time with these products I've come to better understanding of the methodology behind the layering. With Design, I've come to appreciate the functionality of its layering. It's very different from my experiences with Adobe but it also works very well once you've adjusted to it. I'll admit I don't spend much time in Publisher since my long document days are behind me so the impacts there are less. Affinity is a different country from Adobe so the ways will also be different. Different is not bad, just different. Overall I'm very happy with my Affinity experience and pitch the software where ever I can. That aside; there are two other areas that Publisher could explore. One is enhancing the GREP find/change. I used this feature a lot with long documents since it's a massive time saver and a great design tool. The other is variable glyph scaling. Publisher already offers variable word and letter spacing. Adding variable glyph scaling in addition would be a bonus. Thanks.
  5. We are adding variable support to 2.5 but is still going through some final internal testing. This should be available in a beta update next week.
  6. Version 1.8 of OpenType was released in 2016, it included Variable fonts. The feature is mature and widely used nowadays. It would be great to have support for variable fonts.
  7. I don't know why Canvarif was in such a rush to release a beta when it's not really a beta. It clearly lacks features like variable font support, the line width tool is half-finished (or is simply delivered flawed and algorithmically weak), and it also seems like most of the QR code setup isn't ready yet. One of the great gifts of adulthood is indeed gaining wisdom on the importance of... timing. In all aspects. And likewise, learning to wait a bit for deliveries, as a customer.
  8. Hi there! I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list: They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts. They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake. No attribution required. In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included). Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria). [*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality. Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique. [UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of. [UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts. [UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link. [UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration. 9. Nope. The only fonts available from the cloud fonts are the basic RIBBI v1.05. Not even the Medium. And certainly not all of the 16 styles in the variable. The cloud fonts are kind of a mess. When I started doing a detailed inventory awhile back I found stuff missing, old fonts, misnamed fonts, etc., etc. Definitely a WIP. The lack of the Medium for the old static version is probably an oversight. But the lack of all the styles from the variable is likely a decision. Probably not what you wanted to hear. But variable font support is coming to your favorite Affinity app soon....
  10. The current SVG table format does not support it. So at a minimum that would have to change - or a new table added. SVG has some advantages but COLR is adding those. Similar to... the current CFF table for OpenType-PS fonts does not support variable - so they added a CFF2 table to be able make variable OTF fonts. But one of the things in the boring-expansion-spec is to be able to put PS curves in the glyf table where the TT curves are now. So the OTF variable fonts may end-up being an Adopey-only thing and not catch on widely. That is being discussed for COLRv2. And perhaps images too (so virtually all SVG advantages would be gone). Behdad posted a summary of the ideas for COLRv2 in the colr-gradients-spec repository on GitHub. SVG fonts are not likely to go away any time soon. They are easy to make and also support a monochrome fallback. SBIX does not have that fallback. Hopefully it will go away. CBDT - Google put that out to pasture in favor of COLR. COLR is the future of color fonts. COLRv0 is stable. COLRv1 is still being tweaked, fixed, and added to. But people can and are making COLRv1 fonts now, both static and variable. You download them from GF, and there are some others in GitHub, and you can find them more and more in places like CreativeMarket, etc. Once COLRv1 is stable then the focus will turn to COLRv2. Color-SVG fonts which are only vectors can fairly easily be converted to COLRv0 and COLRv1. The COLRv0 fonts already work in Affinity. We tested quite a few. Hopefully Affinity will add support for COLRv1 - the sooner the better. Microsoft converted the Win11 Segoe UI Emoji font to COLRv1 a few months ago. So 100% perfectly scalable with gradients. Update Note: an article said the new font had both the v0+v1 formats. But I just dumped the COLR table and it only has COLRv1. So I am not sure how Affinity is currently handling that emoji font on Win11. Guess going forward Affinity is going to have to support COLRv1 to still support color emojis in Win11. It's very late here. I'm rambling... Hope when Affinity adds variable support that it also includes at least COLRv0 variable.
  11. That is the older v1.01 from 2015 - only had four fonts (RIBBI). The two Medium were added in 2017 (v1.05). What version of Office do you have? You should be able to get all the font styles from the variable font from the cloud fonts. And the cloud fonts are all static. Hmm... let me check the cloud fonts json file to see if they are in there. If they are, then Office can be coaxed into downloading them. Office 2019, 2021, and 365 should all work. It should have the six styles at least, and maybe all 16 like the variable. Lets check... "I'll be back."
  12. Variable fonts are a useful addition also with regard to use in web designs. But there is something strange i found when using the "new" Roboto Condensed from fonts.google.com. I guess this is not a bug, it also appears in the current v2.4.2. https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Roboto+Condensed For compatibility reasons with current web projects i installed the 18 "static" font styles, not the single variable font itself (RobotoCondensed-VariableFont_wght.ttf). Here is the test file: 2024-04-19-variable-fonts-roboto-artefacts_1-1.afpub As soon as a drop shadow or other effects are applied to the text frame, visible artifacts occur depending on the letter. This doesn't seem to be an affinity bug, but rather due to the way certain letters in variable fonts are constructed. Instead of the usual compound paths, the letters consist of individual shapes that only visually merge into an overall shape through overlapping. Your can see this in the wireframe view even without converting the text frame to pathes. The problem now seems to be that for certain letters, especially the bottom and top edges, the effects are applied to the internal individual shapes instead of to the entire letter (composite shape). Depending on the font size, this results in “bumpy” outlines. This doesn't just seem to be a display problem in the editor only. Some of the artifacts are retained even when exporting for the web (PNG, JPEG). Did the developers also experience such artifacts during the integration of the real variable fonts? Or is this a special case that occurs when a variable font is broken down into individual font styles ("static") for compatibility reasons. Like Google did with the Roboto Condensed variable font.
  13. I wonder the same. I've never had any affinity app being slow (not v1, nor v2). Granted, I work on a pretty powerful pc now, but also when working on an older laptop it was always super fast as well. I never worked on machines without a dedicated GPU though, so that might be different. I believe having lots of fonts installed (at least on Windows) was problematic at the time when using v1 for some, so although I think this was fixed, it's still best to not have thousands of fonts installed on the computer in general and just turn them on or off in font software when needing them. So what I would check is: - Are you using a dedicated GPU (graphics card), like Nvidea? And is it turned on? - Make sure you don't have a huge amount of fonts installed. - Do you have enough memory? - Although with vectors resolution of the file shouldn't matter much, the amount of points (vertices) in the file does matter for performance. Normally this should never be a problem, but if for some reason you have everything hand drawn and have milions of points per curve that eventually all adds up system resources and so slows down the program. I'm not an expert on optimizing Affinity as I never encountered any lag-issue, but hope this still somewhat helps.
  14. Can someone guide me please to instructions on how to paste a table from Word into Afpub 2 for Mac? I've tried pasting into an empty field text box, and all it does is paste the text, without any cells. Then I've tried creating a table with the same number of cells, pasting, and it makes a right pig's ear of it! Here are 2 of the tables (as a Word document) I'm trying to get into Afpub 2. They are complex, with merged cells both horizontally and vertically, different fonts and shading, and I don't really want to recreate them (and others) cell by cell. The best I've come up with is to take screen prints, but the resolution at 72 or 144dpi is not good. Any help will be much appreciated. Table examples.docx
  15. I've recently had just this issue with a book containing several pages of tables. What I ended up doing was formatting pages in Word to match the AFPub pages as far as possible (page size, margins, fonts etc.), then created the tables in Word, exported the document as PDF, then imported the PDF to AFPub using 'Document/ Add Pages from File...' menu command. That worked pretty well, and you can resize the table or individual elements easily using the Move tool. See attached. tabless.afpub
  16. Thanks for the correction. I'm obviously not as well-versed in this as Sérgio. As for them not being able to be made variable, I wasn't sure of that but half-suspected already, and I don't see why it doesn't belong in this discussion, at least as a starting point, because after variable fonts… it's the next obvious omission to tackle. I kindly invite the mods to split the relevant posts into a new thread if need be, of course. I would also add that said fact is not guaranteed to always be the case. If both formats take off, there can certainly be ways of making Colour-SVG fonts support variable axes. As a matter of fact, that same philosophy could be applied to the format and turn colours, and maybe even texture and gradients, into editable “axes”, instead of the format relying exclusively on Stylistic Sets as it still does, and those Stylistic Sets might even work as sub-fonts instead of the system, with their own axes, instead of being just presets of sorts. Regarding that newfangled Open Font Format spec, I like it, though I fear will face a bit of an uphill battle against OpenType. Anyhoo, I'll be watching Behdad Esfahbod's (impressive CV, by the way) stream when I get the time, but I looked at his presentation deck already (he mentioned advantages for the UFO format, which is a good thing, and clearly knows well the history of formats, including arcane stuff such as METAFONT), and the fact that all these bright people are putting their minds to these issues fills me with confidence. I'll be sure to check out all those resources, thanks!
  17. The Roboto Condensed static fonts still have the overlaps. Most of the time font developers will remove the overlaps when the static fonts are created. But some of the GF tools do not remove overlaps by default. Developers using their tools can switch-on "remove-overlaps" and usually do. But since being able to properly handle overlaps is required when using GF variable fonts, GF will often leave-in the overlaps. If you are on a Mac, Core Text did/does have a rasterizing issue when two lines are on top of each other - it shows a bit of a halo where the overlap is. Do not know if this has been fixed or not (probably not). But the big jaggies you are seeing are an Affinity issue with the overlaps. They are going to have to solve dealing with the overlaps to support variable fonts. Variable fonts are never going to remove the overlaps. Note: As a work-around for now, you can remove the overlaps from the Roboto Condensed static fonts yourself.
  18. I’m having an issue where Adobe CC fonts installed on my iPad frequently don’t work in any of my Affinity products except…sometimes they do? There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason. Even within the same hour, an Adobe font will work in Designer but not in Publisher, then that same font will start showing up in Publisher but not in Designer. Then later disappear from both. Here’s an example of the same document open in Publisher and Designer. In this instance, the Publisher version is what the document should look like. But earlier, the roles were reversed and it looked good Designer but not in Publisher. This is just one example, I am having this same issue with multiple Adobe fonts. I am also having the issue that others are having with font names being displayed in Chinese when selected. I am on an iPad 12.9 6th Gen (M2) 1TB running iPad iOS 16.2.
  19. That is an extremely interesting, patent- or OpenType-spec-worthy feature. But, as you may guess, I suspect that would only happen if Serif/Canva brought that idea to the table, perhaps, again, along with another company and set of developers like those at FontLab Inc. or Glyphs GmbH. You see, the Variable OpenType font format is a bit of free-for-all, anything goes! They are axis-based, and there aren't exactly standards set in stone. As a matter of fact, it is impossible to anticipate everything and anything type designers may come up with. LTR Beowulf by LettError and Chee by OH no Type Company should tell you all you needed to know about just how wildly creative they can be once they become proficient with this technology. Surely we can band together and crystallise all the historical, most obvious axes (like width/weight, optical size, slant, etc., as defined in the OpenType Design-Variation Axis Tag Registry…), but if we were to stay true to Variable OT's (and, indeed, Gerrit Noordzij's and Catherine Dixon's) infinitely flexible and expandable conceptions of typography, we would have to come up with an equally and inherently flexible “standard-less standard”, which type designers themselves could use as they saw fit and make visible on various software packages' UIs. I have been mulling over the use of private use area/OpenType-specific and non-Unicode glyphs dedicated to UI elements for axis labelling on Character/Variable Font interface panels (type design apps are, after all, vector editors par excellence, and type designers are obviously expert vector designers, which means the results would be, in general, very decent and compelling). That might mean that conceptually similar axes could have slightly different (and, in some cases and for a while, wildly different) labels across different fonts but, as with all other things, over time some new standards (mirroring what Dixon calls, in her advanced typographic categorisation/taxonomy system, “patterns”) would eventually emerge. Could we use the same ideas and tech for, say, custom cursors? Toolbar button icons? Direct axis control nodes? Hover labels/interface aids/naming for the latter or even all of them? Could we even take all of these principles and help solve the mess that are currently the heretofore cryptically-numbered OT Stylistic Sets in one fell swoop? Maybe. Your additional ideas regarding direct manipulation are very intriguing, and if you're willing to cooperate with our Typography research group on a future paper/patent (or, at the very least, provide me with your real name so you can be properly credited for the idea), hit me up. None of this can happen in a vacuum, and requires some degree of cross-disciplinary cooperation (scholars, type designers, and type design and DTP software developers – Serif, once again, I'm also looking squarely at you, and I suspect my exclusivity agreement doesn't preclude from working on or even receiving royalties from IP), followed by some industry-wide agreement. Ultimately, the arbiters of any proposed extensions will be Microsoft and Adobe themselves, as they're the ones who created OpenType in the first place (I don't fully understand exactly which company actually controls it, but it seems to be Microsoft). If you want to see how things stand right now, take a gander at the OpenType 1.9.1 Alpha spec page. There's a lot of interesting stuff there, including, incidentally, a new “colr” table for colour fonts… I would also recommend that @Ash and the team keep an eye on these developments, especially if you think waiting for the final spec to be published is a sensible approach to supporting colour OpenType-SVG fonts in a future version of Affinity.
  20. For SVG you can use variable fonts if the rendering application supports it. ie: you can use variable fonts in most web-browsers available today. For other contexts such as importing into other applications; CAD, 3D tools, cutting tools, etc I suspect most SVG implementations in these contexts won't support variable fonts and converting text to curves will likely produce much better results.
  21. This is typical of GFs own fonts. But for most fonts the upstream repository is going to have static TTF fonts without overlaps. And OTF fonts too. OTF static fonts never have overlaps, so that is the easiest work-around. And you can remove the overlaps yourself - I used FoundryTools-CLI (in GitHub) to remove the overlaps on the Roboto Condensed fonts above. And you could use it to convert the TTF fonts to OTF fonts.
  22. That family was changed in Windows 11 to be a variable font. If you get the Pan-European Supplemental Font Pack from Windows 10, the fonts are still separate static fonts - so they work in Affinity now.
  23. The COLR table was added in OpenType 1.7, in 2015, (for the COLRv0 format). The COLRv1 format was added in OpenType 1.9, in Dec. 2021 (so that part is newer). Color fonts using either COLR format can be variable. Color-SVG fonts cannot be variable - so they really do not belong in this discussion. Proposed changes and updates to the OpenType spec can be followed on GitHub. Here: https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/typography-issues Future font technology is also being developed on GitHub, and in an ISO group. The code development and specs are here: https://github.com/harfbuzz/boring-expansion-spec?tab=readme-ov-file They have been interacting with the ISO for developing the Open Font Format specification. There is a newsgroup set-up by the ISO where this is discussed. Note: the Open Font Format will actually be open, unlike other ISO "public" standards which must be paid for (people made a lot of noise) so you can download the current version from the ISO "free" standards page. No patents involved as far as I can tell.
  24. I'm going to add some tips to the next version of my Publisher manual to help those exporting to PDF for a print-on-demand service because the sites don't provide Affinity-specific instructions. I've distilled their PDF requirements into a general list, along with a warning to always check the provider's specific requirements of course. If you've used one of these services, could you review the export settings below and suggest any tips that might help others avoid issues? For now I'm just looking at export settings and not document setup which is more specific to the service, but please share your document setup tips for specific services, too. Even if somebody doesn't read the manual it would be nice to have a concise list of settings in one forum thread so users don't have to sort through the many long troubleshooting threads. 25. A suggestion for there being a localizable version of each of the Affinity programs such that the localization of the menus is using an external localization file. This would be a substantial task to implement, but could potentially have substantial benefits. In an Affinity program there are menus, for example with words in English. My suggestion is that each string literal, such as File is replaced in the localizable version of that Affinity program by an element of a string variable array. It is important that the string array can handle Unicode characters so as to provide for the greatest possible number of localized versions being possible, please ensure that 8-bit characters are NOT used. Please do NOT use UTF-8, please use UTF-16. Bearing in mind that I have not programmed for many years, this may not be expressed in the source code of the programming language that is being used for Affinity programs, but hopefully my meaning will get through to your programmers. Suppose that the string literal "File" is replaced by an element of a string array, say, afmenu[1] and that afmenu[1] has a default value of "File". At start up the program looks for a UTF-16 text file aflist.dat and, if it finds such a file, populates the afmenu array as much as it can from the aflist.dat file. Thus the afmenu array has text in each of its elements, none, some, or all of the afmenu items having text in English and the rest of the afmenu items having the text in the language of the particular aflist.dat file that was used. So for example, there could be an aflist.dat file in Estonian, an aflist.dat file in Welsh, and so on, and the end user could choose which aflist.dat file to use. There are commercial translation facilities that could translate and localize a copy of the English aflist.dat file into another language. The aflist.dat file could use the same format as the sentence.dat file specified in a document available from my webspace. http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/localizable_sentences_research.htm The file is as follows. http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~ngo/The_Format_of_the_sentence_dot_dat_files_for_use_in_Research_on_Communication_through_the_Language_Barrier_using_encoded_Localizable_Sentences.pdf There are issues that a font with glyphs for the characters used in the language into which localization is made will be needed and there will be issues for the rendering of some languages. This would be a quite large project to implement but the potential benefits of implementation could also be large too. William J. G. Overington Tuesday 16 April 2024
