Great Idea - must include the ability to tick 'scale with object' for strokes and FX which would save loads of bother when the vast majority of your works needs to be scalable

I find this to be a more flexible option for my needs, and you van use stars, clouds and all that and save them in your assets panel :

I just saw: the latest beta (798) now automatically applies the colour swatch after it generated it as global!
One step forward, hurray!
 
So while they're on it: can we now please also select multiple colour swatches to delete them together? (renaming a colour is also very cumbersome...)

We're on it. Hopefully will be today.
EDIT: @Murfee @Dazmondo77 and others, The update to fix the issue with the data merge manager is now available from the top of this thread and on auto-update.

Thank you both for your logs - this is why they're incredibly useful to us! I've now reproduced this crash on startup and it is being caused by the Text Styles Panel being 'visible' when you last closed the application.

If you do a Ctrl Run up and with the first 3 items ticked you should for now be able to access the application again (but don't close it with Text Styles Panel visible!). I'll get this passed on to development.

I've just done a quick test using data merge, and it is ok for what i want it to do, but honestly i don't understand what we can do with the data merge node tool.
If someone have a quick video or something showing what we can do with it would be nice.

Only current options is ADOBE or Callas pdftoolbox(£500) - I use acrobat pro 9 which is ten years old and 32 bit but it still does the job to preview separations and check PDF compliance and all the stuff you NEEEED to check before sending off to your print service provider - you can also output proper vector CMYK proofs from Acrobat (and acrobat reader) which is something you can't do in Affinity apps (WHAT!) this really needs to change, five years is a long time to wait for basics

Just reset both Pub and Designer and now layers work as normal - 👍 
As with the previous beta, pub still bombs when saving a pdf with passthrough using all PDF/X presets but works great using PDF (for print) 

When? It has been a while since Affinity Designer has been out. I am surprised that these essential features have not been implemented by now.
You can’t really compete with Adobe Illustrator without having these basic needs. We should at least have a perspective tool with Free Transform by now.

Yes.. please... These options are essential to experiment with! ( Specially for Logo Design). Please consider these tools for the next  Affinity Designer 1.7  update... or even for the next 2.0 paid update (hopefully not too far away) 
Group a bunch of objects and apply a live distortion effect.
Something like this is easy in Illustrator ( takes a few second to set up) and you can experiment with the options until you are happy with the results, and even change them if you need them on the fly.
I'm guessing to do it in Designer you would need to draw each variation manually.... !  imagine that... 
 

October 2020, Almost end of the year 

damn.. almost june 2020, still no way to import Warped Mockups PSDs... or warp vectors... I mean, those are kinda basic things for graphic designers..

Wooww.. Even they been updating it, still dont have a lot of essentials features in both (photo and designer). I have to use 2 softwares for make some designs and sometimes sucks, just cause designer dont have some features.. 

The above brings to mind the first version of Designer (was 2014 I think) and I was having a play around but thought I must be missing something regarding dragging a corner, couldn't believe this wasn't the backbone of engine, but was to be included in a future update - 5 years on, maybe I'm being impatient but 5 years and no hint in sight of getting this ability is starting to churn negativity in the pit of my soul, and I really really love Affinity, but there are lots of missing basics that 5 years ago seemed to be a maybe a couple years off but are nowhere in sight -
I just find it a little insulting that on the Designer web page it states:
Serious business
No bloat, no gimmicks, just all the tools you need, implemented how you always dreamed. Affinity Designer is a stripped back, pro-end workhorse that will always get your job done.
But I'm still copy pasting between Illustrator CS5 if I need any type of distortion, real vector brushes, vector fills / patterns etc...

Just tested and it does work - but no substitute for a proper vector tool - I still use Illustrator cs5 every day for this purpose and more recently VectorStyler which does a fantastic job but can be temperamental and buggy but it really does have  I really hope that Affinity can come up with something this good and super responsive - shame copy / paste has problems with anything but simple vectors - definitely one to watch although its still in Beta with no release date, and five years on, still no sign in sight from serif for this much requested standard capability

Absolutely agreed. I am having to learn Illustrator 😞 in order to have editable vector brushes for current vector projects. (+ vector scatter brushes that I can break apart and edit) I'm also having to to back to an ancient version of Xara which has it's own issues.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVE affinity but if I'm doing illustrations with bitmaps I find a bitmap app way faster with the added benefit that unscrupulous clients cant do their own edits.

The problem is this:
It is five years already (an eternity in software design) and the programs are still riddled with bugs.
Some features that are being mentioned were talked about years ago.
You can't live off potential forever.
They have to take a big step forward at some point and fix the bugs that are there for starters.
 

The funny thing is I use the live perspective filter for Design work only, I've never had the need to do it in Photo editing! So for me its in the wrong App! lol.
I also don't really understand why there has to be this special live filter for perspective. I wish I could just free form drag the four corners of a bounding box in designer on any object. We can almost do all the transforms, we have rotation, and skewing. But if we could just move each of the 4 corners independently too that would eliminate the need for the perspective filter in Designer, and would be a lot more convenient to use. 

mesh fill : In AI, it works only with basic shapes. We don't need it in AD.
vector patterns : very important for me. I'm very frustrated with bitmap images. It's a pity when you export in PDF : all lines are clean and bitmap patterns are in low resolution if you are not aware about that.
blend tool and deformation tool : a priority too
Adding a spiral tool would be great.
