Dazmondo77 reacted to guywholikesaffinityapps in actual vector brushes
    Hi there,
    Backstory:
When I created a curve with a brush (in Affiniy Designer)   I had to realize that the exported svg   was basically an pixel image wrapped into a svg file. After finding out that the brushes where (and custom brushes had to be) a png,   as well as the svg format-'technology' seemingly not having a feature for custom brush-strokes,   it made sense.
But obviously, I use vector tools for a reason, so I would be very interested in seeing the following feature being added to Affinity Designer:
Be able to import svg as brushes and be able to export a curve with brush that is entirely vector graphic (or maybe even keeping it two different curves inside the svg? one as the actual path?).     In addition to this having the default brushes as curves, or maybe something like this would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Looks like you somehow triggered rotate canvas, which is super easy to trigger by pressing ⌘ and just flick over the scroll wheel on your mouse it now rotates the canvas, which can be a bit disorientating when first triggered - if you go to top menu, view, rotate and then reset rotation this should put everything back to normal - you could also go to preferences, Tools and untick 'enable canvas rotation with ⌘ + scroll wheel' or if you have a track pad you could also un-tick the trackpad rotation, to be safe. For me personally I have now embraced it and found the best workable solution, for me, is to have a shortcut for 'reset rotation' which I have set to ⌘+' which is now a muscle memory shortcut for me, and now I find it super useful especially with a magic mouse

It’s kind of got to the point that the only way I can fathom out why we don’t yet have any form of vector distortions is probably because it can’t yet do it - I gather they started development in 2010, and for any software company who decides to build brand new vector design application aimed squarely at pros, vector distortions / Free Transform / Perspective & Warp Tools or whatever you want to call it would be pretty high on the features list, my guess is they must have been working on this from the start and maybe judging by the problems with boolean operations in the past maybe it’s still too glitchy for release - it will be seven years since release on the first of October —— gradually losing faith

Dazmondo77 got a reaction from CLC in Printing with Publisher (and Designer) changes colours
Not the right decision, considering these are 'pro' applications and a lot of print houses do actually run many internally produced jobs direct to film/plate/digi press from InDesign or Quark - This is the first bit of feedback I've come across from the Affinity team that have addressed these concerns which I've been harping on about for a few years - I just assumed pro applications would send a CMYK job to a CMYK printer with less issues than a consumer inkjet - I've had my Xerox Phaser 6180DN for around 13 years which produces pretty accurate CMYK output and was shocked at how bad the print quality was from Affinity apps, all pure cyan magenta and yellow colour bars ends up with a noticeable dot of other colours when output from affinity plus vector information looks like its pre rasterised before it hits the printers postscript RIP - whereas when outputting from any Adobe / Quark / even an old copy of Freehand on an old mac gives pure CMYK colour bars and nice crisp reproduction of vector information  - My biggest concern here is it's another reason to hang onto Acrobat pro 9 , so in order to have faith in my workflow I still have no option but to stick with El Capitan - I've freelanced at a few print houses over the years and have found it frustrating how you come across production macs, that in some cases, still run mac OS as far back as Leopard which is too old for Affinity apps, yet they have complete faith in their 'old' workflows ---- As I would now describe myself as a Affinity Fanboy, I really hope the team eventually roll out professional print output - I just feel this could be a push for all those print-shops to upgrade

Still waiting for true vector brushes - all but the basic vector brushes are actually rasters along a vector path, which is pretty useless for creating vector artwork and is a much requested feature - I still use an ancient version of illustrator to plug the gaps

For me - I can knock stuff up loads quicker in Affinity via Publisher and Studiolink which total genius - I really hate having to use Illustrator, it's slow and just not nice to use in comparison, I just need it for a few missing basics such as vector distortions, Blob brush, simplify paths, perspective grid, easily create fancy borders, 3d, real vector brushes, Im sure theres a few other things that I can't think of off the top of my head - I don't want to use it but I have no choice if I need to crack on and get stuff done

It's essential. We are also paying for Adobe subscriptions as essential tools like a free distort tool still isn't included. If you have art work you've already created and want to add it into a perspective scene and need to retain vector editability to edit shading etc - with free distortion tool you can place this in the scene in seconds... if as a designer or illustrator you need do this - the first time you find it's missing, you would consider this tool essential.

But it's taken for granted that you can do vector distortions in an app that was initially aimed squarely at professionals - I use vector distortions a lot so I think it's a shame that I've had Illustrator cs5 open for the past six and a  half years in order to crack on with work (although affinitys copy and paste is currently broke and only pastes RGB - hopefully back to normal in next beta 1.9.5???)
I do feel sorry for self employed / freelancers that want or need to make the switch and have only used adobe cc, as adobe have now announced cancellation fees. saw a twitter post from someone needing to end a Photoshop subscription, as it was too expensive, getting charged $134.96 - that is just wrong (GREEDY GITS) - yes we can welcome those effected to Affinity, with a nice slick snappy interface and easy learning curve, you can be up and running in a day, but imagine the surprise when all you want to do is slight tweak to the perspective of a group, with a deadline around the corner, you can't. you have to find an alternative method = Inkscape - VectorsStyler beta - CorelDraw is all you have on the Mac there's fair few more on the PC including Serif Drawplus - 😒

Yes, but we're talking about essential missing features that people have been asking for for years, a basic non-destructive perspective tool is a bog standard requirement.

This is actually caused by having Display : Metal in Preferences > Performance (and not new to the beta). The hardware is not relevant. I'll get this issue updated.

To be fair as far as I know Affinity never call AD an Illustrator replacement, what you have is some users who say it is or even an Illustrator killer. But it is all down to your requirements, for some it can be a replacement but if you’re talking about generally then it clearly isn’t even close. I would certainly like to have seen more progress on features considering it’s been out for a fair while now, as things are I’m not sure it will ever be a real 1:1 replacement. Everyone has a wishlist of features they’d like to see. Then again you are talking about something costing £50 vs £20/month and locked out of your docs if you stop paying the tax. If you are making money with your graphics that is probably a small price to pay but for hobbyists it probably isn’t worth it. Even with it’s shortcomings it is probably the 3rd ??? best vector app after AI and Corel Draw (haven’t used corel for many years so am presuming it would be 2nd). I disagree they have lots of competition at this price point, but again it might depend what you are trying to achieve.

As for tracing I use a stand alone app as I’ve never been that impressed with AI’s.

Exactly. But since making the most money possible is also something most professionals strive for, finding alternatives for Illustrator is a question often being asked. And for most of them, AD in its current state is not an alternative. That's what I meant.
BTW, I'm in the same boat as you, still using (dated) versions of Corel's and Adobe's apps, which I have bought a permanent licence for (permanent -> as long as my system/OS will allow me to use them, of course). I honestly wish I could do everything in affinity apps for my work as I like their "look & feel", but I can't. Or sometimes I don't want to as it'd require time intensive workarounds.
And the vast majority of those don't make their living with any of those artworks, I guess. So, irrelevant for this discussion about working professional in the meaning of "making you living with the work". Furthermore, I wonder, how many of those examples, who actually make their living with it, have made use of vector distortion, warp, blend or vector brushes in their works. In this case, you just confirmed my point. As creating the same in AD would take a lot longer, hence isn't optimal at all.
In my eyes, Serif needs to decide where it wants to go with designer. Surpassing Adobe is almost impossible unless you invest millions (we had that discussion somewhere else in these fora already). So, they seem to target at the ethusiastic hobbyists and the "artsy" sectors of vector design. Unfortunately, there's a lot of competition in this sector en par with Affinity's price levels and most of the time surpassing Affinity's apps in fuctions and features.

A "professional user" making money using a "professional Illustrator workflow" should then probably continue to use their tool of choice since it makes money for them.
I, for one, likely would, if it would make enough money for me. I don't like Adobe's subscription scam because the models they offer are over my budget, and they don't offer me anymore alternatives that would fit my need. As in: Buying an upgrade every few years to only those few apps that I needed while skipping CS1, CS2, CS4 and CS5 was well within my budget.
So I still don't get your point with "professional workflow" in the context of this thread. (For the record: I'm eagerly waiting for the addition of all those requested tools just like the next guy! )
If it's a matter of scalability and teamwork, then folks should likely stay with Adobe for the time being.
Yeah. Right. No art here, huh?
