musicfed reacted to Ldina in dng file from Lightroom: if I open it on Affinity Photo (1) I see no edits?
I believe so. If sharing with other LR or ACR users, also be sure your DNG metadata is updated in the file so they see the same edits. I’m not at my computer now, but LR has an update metadata feature to make sure all your current settings are recorded in the DNG file (or the XMP file if you are not converting to DNG format). Makes sure to send the xmp file along with the raw file if not using DNG format.

When you import a raw camera file into Lightroom, Adobe writes a TON of metadata to the newly created DNG file. This metadata has fields for every LR slider and setting and this info is specific to LR  and Adobe Camera Raw. They see and use this metadata to apply and display the file inside of those Apps only, so all those slider settings show up in the LR preview of the image. The actual raw data is still as recorded by the camera and only the metadata has been changed.  Most (perhaps all) of that newly written metadata is proprietary to Adobe products and is ignored by other apps, like AP, which uses a different Raw processor engine. So, yes, it is expected behavior. It is, after all, a RAW file and AP imports that original camera data as shot.

Thanks. It does sound a lot of work whereas said feature on iOS photos does rotate and crop in one go.. quite neat. Anyway I think the best way I found is to use the rotate command under develop persona and then crop if needed. More laborious but I get there

musicfed reacted to Alfred in How to rotate and crop a photo on Photo?
If you want to keep the photo the same size, you’ll need to rasterize it after rotation and then do some careful cloning or inpainting to fill in the blank triangles around the edges. If you’re happy to enlarge it and lose some of the original content, you can simply drag the corners outwards with the Move Tool: when you export the result, anything beyond the edges of the canvas will be cropped away automatically.

will try this now thanks! I am on the fence for buying Designer for Mac, after having AP for mac/iPad and Designer for iPad (all of whichk I like every day more)
I have to say there are quite a few extra functions of A.Photo mac vs Ipad but sometimes you just can't beat the immediacy of using the iPad..

You can export layers to operate files, create slices and export multiple items to different formats and or different sizes.

As long as you have used non-destructive filters like the Live Filters and the Adjustment filters you could group them and copy the group over to a new image.
The adjustment filters can be saved as presets, there is a button in the top left of each adjustment filter to 'add preset' these can be applied to each image.
If you really wanted to get automated, you could also create a macro to apply these presets and use the batch feature to apply them en masse.

thank you so much - still getting confused. I added a fill layer and reduced the opacity and then was able to change the colour of my shades. looked incredibly realistic!

If you use a pixel layer, fill it with colour fill and add a mask then paint white/black on mask to reveal/conceal colour appearing on layers below, it is simple to change colour by selecting the pixel fill layer and filling with another colour. The mask determines what colours ar changed in the background layer.
Selection method suggested by Arthur also works in similar manner. In this case the selection acts as the 'mask' to determine which pixels get recoloured. You can change the colour again by reselecting the 'original' selection and changing the fill colour.
Either way the app needs to know 'which' pixels to change colour of.

Make a selection and add a fill layer. Only the selected region will be filled, and you will be able to change the blend mode and/or the fill colour at any time.

musicfed reacted to MEB in snapping button on Affinity Photo - why not there?
    Hi musicfed,
These changes (snapping and delete buttons on the bottom left of the interface) were introduced with Affinity Designer which uses a revised/improved interface compared to Affinity Photo which was launched first quite some time ago. They will be eventually added to Photo in a future update.

Yes. Free, open source, and the latest version (2.8) has real-time quality rendering. On par with commercial 3d apps. Ahead of the curve compare to some in most respects (such as Lightwave). And 2.8's GUI has seen remarkable progress, and is now arguably 'easier' than even some of the commercial offerings.
In short, no need to spend any money if you want to add a bit of 3d spice in your work! (But please do consider sponsoring the Blender Foundation for their hard work :-)

    Hi musicfed,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
There's no need to get into 3D if only you want is create some 3D effects. There some dedicated/accessible applications that can do this for you like Xara 3D Maker (Windows) or Art Text (Mac) just to mention a couple. They let you change materials, lights, 3d position etc with a few simple sliders.

musicfed reacted to gdenby in how would you go to create a 3d logo like this?
I know a little bit about Blender, Maya & Zbrush. They can accept 2d .svg files that Affinity exports. Looking around, it appears Keyshot is a renderer for 3D models made in other apps.
3D apps handle nodes/vectors in x-y-z- space. 2D apps can only work in a set of 2 coordinates. When brought into a 3D app, those are typically extruded/projected into the missing 3rd dimension. Often there are scaling options as the 2D outline is projected into 3D. A common one is to add a front bevel to a typeface, and a shading routine creates a smooth gradient for every angle in perspective. Affinity offers a 2d approximation thru the bevel/emboss fx.
But this is just a way to move 2D data into 3D. 3D apps do not need to start from 2D, and there can be all sorts of problems. In my experience, some 3D software could only use 2D points as what are described in Affinity by sharp nodes. Others could use the curves data from smooth nodes. Some apps could deal w. series of curves composed of 3 control nodes each, others, 4 or more. The final 3D form could be not quite the same as the 2d.
When one gets into this sort of work, assembly line routines, a.k.a. "workflows" are hard to describe, unless one is using  specific hardware(s) to produce specific output. That is something like "Produce word (company  or product name) in specified font, along circular section arc of 30 degrees. Export as .svg. Open in (app), and accept default units. (Or, interactively scale imported object to .1 of default world size)  Rotate outlines from x/y axes to x/z. Extrude to depth of .5 of single character x size, adding 45 degree bevel of max .25 of z extrusion. Place camera 45- degree from object x/z center. Set object properties to "silver". Set camera position, set lens, set light(s)..."

@musicfed Yes, it's difficult to get such effect working in Affinity (without 3D rendering) but you can make semi-3D pictures using styles and perspective. For example:
