Steps got a reaction from ModernHomePress in Decorative frames for pictures?
Since Publisher comes with some assets like iOS icons and has some predefined Styles like "80s Poster Shines" I wondered if there should be some decorative frames included.
I'm talking about an easy way to apply frames like https://www.vecteezy.com/free-vector/decorative-frames to Picture Frames.
I also attached a screenshot from a photobook creation software of their masks.
The point is that you can do it with Photoshop and I'm pretty sure that by using mask layers this can be achieved somehow in Publisher too, but it's really cumbersome.
If you want to create a nice photobook really quick it's cool to have predfined masks you can apply to an image with one click.
Also it would be nice if there is a way to save a created mask to easily reuse it or share with others.

My background with using Publisher is that I want to create a photo book and order that as PDF.
I know it's easier to just use propritary software of photobook printing services, but as they don't give you a PDF for your digital archive I watch out for solutions like Publisher.
This feature may be useful to reach more normal end users like me that like to order photo books and hate that vendor lock-in that prevents getting a proper PDF of your work.
I find the Publisher really easy to use compared to Scribus and VivaDesigner. And of course InDesign is way too expensive for a hobby.
So there may be only very small adjustments to be made for a broader audience beside professionals.
    What do you think?

    That's typical fanboy talk.
Which OS is better is just a matter of taste. Nothing more.
Stay with the facts: You can measure with benchmarks that the hardware is stronger. But it also is more expensive.

I'm not. And this thread is not about me.
Basicly the question of the thread starter was answered by Patrick and explained further by fde101.
It's indeed so good that it could be part of the FAQ.
Your fanboy talk however is not useful in any way and you won't "convince" me. I already know that Apples hardware is more capable - this has been proven.
What OS & software is "better" is a matter of taste as I already said.
    Topic could be closed.

Wow, nice work. Thank you for your effort.
This will get the job done in the meantime.
I still suggest that Photo brings this as basic functionality with it. It could be integrated with a dropdown after the width & height fields to add more control how it should behave.

    Hi All,
Unfortunately, we are hearing many stories from the creative community about how they are being severely impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know we can’t solve a lot of these problems, but we do want to try to offer as much support as possible.
That’s why we’re announcing three measures that we've just put in place. They are:
A new 90-day free trial of the Mac and Windows versions of the whole Affinity suite A 50% discount for those who would rather buy and keep the apps on Mac, Windows and iPad A pledge to engage more than 100 freelance creatives for work, spending the equivalent of our annual commissioning budget in the next three months (more details of this will be announced next week). The introduction of the 90-day free trial and deeply discounted pricing is done in the hope that this will make life a little easier for people who rely on creative software to make a living, but may be stuck at home without their usual tools, or for students who might not have access to their Affinity apps on their personal devices. In addition, by increasing our spend on commissioning work from freelancers we can also put some extra money into a part of the industry which will be particularly affected.
We plan to make the free trial and additional discount available until 20 April, but of course we will continue to review the situation as time goes on.
We have put posts on Facebook and Twitter about what we are doing if it's something you would like to share.
We're now all working from home
In terms of the team here, we have all vacated our Nottingham offices and are now working from home. Naturally this is causing us some disruption, but we continue to type code and expect to carry on making good progress with our development efforts.
Support is a bit trickier though. Firstly, we can’t accept inbound telephone calls right now, and there are also going to be challenges for our staff to work their normal full-time hours – especially with imminent school closures in the UK. We’re obviously going to do our very best but hope you will understand if we are not as fast to respond to email as usual.
Of course, if a question you have is something which could be answered by our community, then we’d also greatly appreciate if you put that here on the forum rather than contact us directly. It would definitely help us out a lot.
Frankly it’s hard to know what to say or do in this unprecedented situation. But more than anything else, we want to use this opportunity to wish good health to you and your loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.
    All the very best,
    Ash

Steps got a reaction from davidg2020 in How do I collect my linked images in Affinity Publisher?
In my case I wanted to achieve what the OP asked: Collecting all actually used images in one folder.
I needed that because I had to do a batch rework on them outside of Publisher.
But it's also useful to do that "pack & go" what some people want (and where I see no need in).

@fde101 Yes, I can follow your point.
Regarding my app it's also Androids way of memory handling that slows it down due to aggressive garbage collection even if there is plenty of space left.
Here the way of iOS to allow taking up some amount and sending out kill warnings over that treshold is better for memory hungry apps like mine.
Providing better Silicon and a relaxed memory handling is of corse a plus for intensive apps.
I think Affinity would perform worse on Android than on iOS.
But saying that this makes iOS the best system in general is nonsense if take everything else also in consideration. Overall I like Android more. The main reason is that I'm a Java Developer and Android is quite accesible, easy and good documented. I can run my own apps without paying a cent for that. Not possible with iOS.

I write this post just out of pure curiousity and I do not expect this to be considered in any way. How many lines of code do the Affinity applications really share? With the Personas you can switch from APu to AP and AD and some functions are shared when you switch back to APu although APu does not have this feature directly at hand.
Simple example: I am working right now on a manual converted from a PDF with a lot of technical drawings in APu. There are so many cluttered elements sitting next to each other and I want to tidy up the drawings, so a wire frame would be helpful. Switching to the AD Persona I can turn on wireframe view and work there. Switching back to APu Persona with wireframe view active gives me a wireframe view in APu. This means APu "understands" the wireframe view. So why is there no wireframe view in APu? There are many other areas which share functions, but are not directly available without the Personas.
So here a weird idea I have: Why not starting with a basic Affinity Master application and sell the functions of APu, AP and AD as modules? So tripled code lines could be avoided, many settings could be shared which are right now independent of each other. So we just use the Studio Link and do not have to leave the application at any time. The special Personas AD and AP have could be organised as Sub Personas.
    Just an idea.

UPDATING TO THIS VERSION (Free for existing customers)
The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in Help > About Affinity Photo).
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the Affinity Store software it will check for updates and offer any available update. The latest update will install over the top of any earlier version, with no need to uninstall. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "Download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Photo for Windows) can be downloaded from this link. (that installer is NOT for Windows Store purchases and needs a product key).
If you’ve purchased from the Microsoft Store— Microsoft Store updates are done automatically by the operating system (each time you start the application). If this does not happen for you, open the Windows Store app and click the three dots in the top right corner of the app and then go to Downloads and Updates. Click Get Updates. This should hopefully force the update to show.

I don't think I have ever seen anything that compares how effectively iPadOS uses the iPad hardware with how effectively Android uses its hardware.  I would guess as well that iPadOS would be less demanding largely due to the fact that it is not encumbered by Java technology the way that Android is, but that would simply be a guess.
I have seen a similar level of stability issues between the two platforms, but that is for my own use cases on the specific devices I own.  Do you have any research data showing the difference in stability between the platforms?
iPad has better 3D graphics support than android did up until recently.  With the addition of Vulkan to recent Android versions I would expect that from an architectural perspective between the platforms they are likely on par now, but as Android hardware varies so wildly the quality of drivers will come into play, plus as has been pointed out, iPad does have the superior hardware at this point.  For 2D graphics I would guess they are closer to matching, but it would be a guess on my part.
As to being more "safe" and the relative lack of piracy, that is a trade-off: the closed ecosystem of the app store on the Apple platforms makes it easier to control things to the point that fewer risks are taken, but the downside is that they reject a number of categories of applications that are readily available on Android, making it worthwhile for some of us to maintain both platforms as we can do some things on each that can't be done on the other (at least not easily).  This includes things such as some types of network diagnostic tools that will run on Android platforms but which require a level of network access that Apple won't permit under iOS/iPadOS.

In this context perhaps, but this is not always generically true.  Some software (including operating system software) can be provably superior when compared to others for specific use cases depending on how their algorithms handle various conditions.
As a simplified example, consider memory allocation.  When an operating system has X amount of memory and needs to distribute it across multiple processes (applications), there are a number of approaches that could be taken.  If a process comes in and says "I need X amount of memory" then the OS needs to find a block of memory to hand to the process.  Depending on how the data structures are organized by the operating system, the amount of time it takes to find that block of memory may or may not be predictable, may or may not have an upper bound on it, etc.  It is also possible that the OS might need to allocate more than the amount of memory requested in order to keep the process of allocating the memory efficient, depending on its goals.
For example, one algorithm might return the exact amount of memory requested if it is available but take an unpredictable amount of time to obtain it, say ranging from 1 ms to 30 ms but normally taking 3 ms or less.
Another might return the amount of memory requested rounded up to the nearest 1 KB but do it in 5  ms every time.
If you are creating a word processor, the "average" performance of 3 ms or less combined with the fact that the first algorithm does not waste as much memory would probably make it a more practical choice.
If you are creating a medical device that patients rely on to keep them alive and it needs to perform some task every 40 ms precisely without fail, the unpredictable amount of time to allocate memory in that same first algorithm could result in someone's death.
Again, this is admittedly a simplified and not particularly relevant example, but these types of trade-offs are all over the place when it comes to the design of a complex piece of software such as an operating system.  Sure taste can come into play to some degree, but there are times when a particular piece of software (operating system or otherwise) is simply not suitable for a particular task, or perhaps is only available to run on hardware which is not suitable for a particular task, and there are times when the choice of algorithms and the set of facilities exposed by a piece of software are simply better matched to solving a particular problem.

To me there seems to be a growing number of posts regarding usability-flaws and design-mistakes.
(I recently had an intensive forum-discussion myself regarding usability-aspects...)

I really think you should consult some usability-experts (not just UI-designers..) to have your products evaluated.
