wtrmlnjuc reacted to Adrian_M in LaTeX typesetting plugin in Designer
OK, I'm very aware that maybe most of the designers and users of the awesome Affinity Designer are not into scientific posters, books or documents, but I'm a mathematician and I love the app myself, as much as I understand and use it. :)
Hence, I got a small, but important feature request: a plugin/native support which would allow one to use the power of "local" LaTeX typesetting for symbols, fonts and other scientific notations.
I am aware I could use the great LaTeXiT + drag & drop, but still, I envision my workflow as follows:
When I have a complicated figure to draw, I fire up Affinity Designer and I draw, but for annotations and everything font or math symbol related, I'm not quite covered. I have installed some versions of the native LaTeX fonts (CMU) to use system-wide, but some are missing and still doesn't feel the same. So for symbols, equations etc. I would like to be able to input a LaTeX formula (delimited by the well-known dollar-signs) and Affinity would typeset it locally, using the fonts included in the LaTeX distribution installed on my Mac.
What do you think? Honestly, I think that such a feature would be useful for all kinds of technical drawers, although they may use CAD-style apps. But you'll never know when you need a formula on your piece of art, right? :)
Moreover, in perspective, I'm sure this would provide immensely useful for the future Publisher app, with inter-operability.
Thank you for the support and the awesome apps!

wtrmlnjuc reacted to spez in Request — Stroke Width Anchors on Curves
+1 to that
I do hate using that tiny little graph. Accuracy is so awkward to achieve. Even just having a full screen graph view (with transparency, obviously, so you can still see the object stroke) would help massively. Would still just be a workaround, but still an improvement.

wtrmlnjuc got a reaction from garrettm30 in Request — Stroke Width Anchors on Curves
Coming from Illustrator, something I used somewhat infrequently but often enough was the Variable Stroke Width tool. This tool allowed you to change the width of the stroke along a curve (we have this) with adjustable Anchors along the curve (we don’t have this). Very useful if you wanted to precisely align a specific stroke width to a specific area of the shape like a pre-measured curve anchor.

wtrmlnjuc reacted to Yoshiomi Tominaga in Please support Japanese vertical writing
Please support Japanese vertical writing.
This is the function most needed by Japanese.
Website with detailed explanation:
https://w3c.github.io/jlreq/#vertical-writing-mode-and-horizontal-writing-mode
Adobe uses this because it supports vertical writing in Japanese.
This is the only reason why I and my workplace cannot adopt “Affinity”.
If this problem is solved, “Affinity” may become the top share in the Japanese market.
Can Japanese donate development costs to support vertical writing in Japanese?
In Japan, Adobe dominates the market.
That is not good.
The Japanese market requires the emergence of competitors that compete with Adobe.
I hope that Affinity plays an active role for Japan.

This feature is essential for me too, I have no idea how to insert vertical text in a simple way,
I am going to buy Affinity Publisher but I discover that the vertical text function is not available,
and I tried this almost two days in Affinity Designer, and it hasn't got this function too.
nearly 50% of printing works are still using the vertical format in both Hong Kong and Taiwan, especially the novel publishing,
I looking forward that developers could add this feature in the future.

Are you planning to implement Japanese vertical typography or not?
If this feature is not implemented, "Publisher" will not use it for Japanese print professionals.

Dear developers, please read and consider seriously.
I am not a programmer. So I can not understand how much you can not program.
Because of that, in Japan, design software has been working on the premise that Japanese vertical typography is implemented.
All the design applications of "illustrator", "Freehand", "Canvas", "Quark Xpress", "Pagemaker" and "InDesign" have implemented Japanese vertical typography.
We have never thought that vertical typography can not be done.
In the Japanese printing industry, we will avoid using apps that can not do "vertical writing typography" on a first look.
If you do not know, please be aware of this fact.
It seems that you have avoided this problem ever since the 2015 “Desiger” release.
I hope to put in a good mood soon.
We are in the "Adobe" prison, an absurd world where we can not even manipulate past data we created.
Please provide design tools that allow us to create freely without becoming refugees.
We aspire to implement Japanese vertical typography on all of "Pyblisher", "Designer" and "Photo".

wtrmlnjuc reacted to kimtorch in Scripting
Are there any plans to add scripting support?
I notice there is no Applescript library at all but am interested to know if there are plans to add Applescript or perhaps Javascript support. Virtually everything we do as far as creating PDFs, packaging, placing images and text, formatting, proofing, sending pages to print etc is done via script.
Tagged text goes hand-in-hand with scripting so I think this needs to also be supported.

wtrmlnjuc reacted to sfillibeck in Presentation Mode
Dear A-Team,
I am using Publisher already since the 1st beta. I even switched now to using it to create my business and training presentations. It gives me way more flexibility and professional tools than PowerPoint or Keynote. Of course
Here my question now: Do you see any possibility to create a "Presentation mode" type of feature? Currently, I have to either create a PDF from the slides, but the preview application is limited when using it as a presentation tool. Or, I have to generate pictures from every page and put it on empty slides in PowerPoint. Both solutions are not great.
So it would be "just" a feature which allows me to flip through the slides back and forth without all the studios, tools, menues and other application elements.
Thank your very much,
Stefan Fillibeck
PS: APub is really a great application. You all did a fantastic job here! Looking forward to the 19th. Pre-Ordered already

wtrmlnjuc reacted to carl123 in Presentation Mode
You can activate Preview mode with View > Preview Mode
Then hide the toolbar and studios with the Tab key
You can then use the shortcut keys CTRL+PageDn & CTRL+PageUp to flip through the pages (slides)
(Or change them to just PageDn & PageUp for one-handed opertion)
I think that's about as near to a presentation mode you can get in Publisher at the moment

wtrmlnjuc reacted to Tupaia in Isolate mode improvements
Hello!
A few suggestions to make the Isolate mode actually usable:
- It should be possible to isolate multiple separate objects(=layers) at once.
As of now, if multiple layers are selected, ALT-clicking one of the selected layers isolates only this layer, not all of them!
Workaround: Group the objects, then isolate. This is not really practical, however.
Better than ALT-clicking: a separate command with assignable keyboard shortcut for 'Isolate'!
- Also, a better way to leave isolate mode than clicking empty space would be good!
Why? What if I have multiple objects(=layers) isolated and then want to select parts of them, to group, arrange, cut, or isolate further, ... not possible because the moment you click somewhere, you fall out of isolate mode.
-> There should be a separate command with assignable keyshort for 'Unisolate'.
An clean Isolate mode with this functionality is very important to master complex scenes, and in the meantime it is supported by practically all CAD, 3d, or 2d vector programs (Rhino, Cinema4d, 3ds max, Softimage, Maya, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, ...), for good reasons!
Thanks for considering!
Best regards
Eugen

wtrmlnjuc reacted to Andy Somerfield in Color blindness feature would be very helpful!
Hi,
Photo contains some LUTs to help with colour blindness - both simulation and Daltonisation are included. They are available as presets for the LUT adjustment, in the Adjustments panel. If these would be useful for Designer / Publisher - perhaps more generally as some sort of View -> Preview mode, I am sure that can be arranged
Hope this helps,
A

wtrmlnjuc reacted to CatLady in Color blindness feature would be very helpful!
I just made up an ad (in Designer) for publishing in print, and my husband suggested that we need to see how it would look to a colorblind reader. It would be VERY helpful to have that in all the Affinity products!
I do have ColorSchemer Studio, which does have the function of showing how your chosen colors would look to someone with different kinds of color vision problems. But I can't load my ad into it and see how the gradients would look, for instance. Maybe someone has such a program, and I'll go looking for one. But it would sure be great if I could check it within Affinity programs! Maybe you could find a developer who's doing this and pay him to incorporate his product into the global Affinity program.

wtrmlnjuc reacted to JGD in Allow objects to snap to their “ghost”, initial position during drag operations
Ok. Imagine I have an object, any object, and I want to offset it by half its length/height; being able to snap it to its former centre point needs that feature.
Imagine that I have a triangle, and I want to put one of its vertices where a different one was; same thing.
Clearly none of you must make much use of vector editors for precision work, because I, for one, use that feature in Ai all the time and I miss it dearly.
And no, this isn’t snapping an object back to its original position, you’ve just described undo. The feature I’m aiming at is being able to snap an object’s nodes or paths to the positions its nodes and paths originally were in before starting the drag operation, but still performing a drag operation to completion.
I’m not even bothering with making more demos at this point because I’m way too busy and stressed out for that. Please fire up an Ai CC trial, turn on Smart Guides (Ctrl/Cmd+U), create some objects, drag them around and notice how they interact with themselves mid-drag. Designer lacks that feature and is much more cumbersome because of that.
-
wtrmlnjuc reacted to JGD in Allow objects to snap to their “ghost”, initial position during drag operations
Also, on this subject, I should add that, for consistency and usability, objects should already snap to their originals when doing Option+Drag duplication operations, which is already their behaviour when performing Command+drag operations.
And I've just realised, while looking at the status bar messages, that apparently Command is [now? Since v.1.6? Since… ever?] the default modifier for duplicating and Option the default modifier for ignoring snapping. This, per Apple's Human Interface Guidelines is completely unacceptable and inconsistent with the behaviour in the Finder and pretty much all macOS apps.
When you click and drag an icon (or an image or block of text in any text editor, like TextEdit or Pages, or any object in Keynote) while pressing Option, you will always get a duplicate, and when you click and drag the same icon while pressing Command, in a window – or the desktop – with “snap to grid” activated, the Finder will ignore the grid (and so will Keynote regarding snapping, if you're dealing with objects). WHY should Affinity behave in such a blatantly inconsistent way with the rest of macOS? It started out as a macOS app, first and foremost, and if you really must have it be consistent across OSes, at least allow the users some degree of finer control as to how modifier keys affect its operation.
You don't want to become the new Adobe (or, worse even, outdo them) when it comes to OS-app UX inconsistency, trust me on that one. Designers do not take that lightly.

wtrmlnjuc reacted to JGD in Allow objects to snap to their “ghost”, initial position during drag operations
Hi again. This is a rehash of yet another feature request I made more than four years ago, which is still preventing me from working in Affinity Designer in a sensible fashion.
As you know, Ai implements drag operations in an '80s/'90s style “ghost” drag model (not unlike the Classic Mac OS window and icon drag model). The WYSIWYG part of the equation is the original position of the object, while the new position will be shown as a “ghost”, i.e. an outline, which you can snap to the original position of the object. This behaviour, while not being completely WYSIWYG or very elegant, is VERY useful, especially – but not limited to – when doing modular typography.
Affinity Designer, on the other hand, features a completely WYSIWYG drag mode, in which no “ghosts” exist. You just can't snap an object to its initial position, period. This is suboptimal, and forces the user to use impractical workarounds, such as duplicating objects instead, or to rely on complex grid arrangements, which may be overkill for simpler projects.
[For some context, InDesign features both Illustrator's drag model, when you perform a quick click+drag operation, and Affinity Designer's model, when you perform a longer, click+hold+drag operation.]
My suggestions (either a single one of them or a combination thereof) as to how this problem can be solved are the following:
• Add a toggle in preferences so a different drag model can be used instead of the current strictly WYSIWYG one;
• Allow users to perform a different drag model, perhaps like in InDesign, by holding the position after clicking and before dragging, but reversed (the preferred default model should still be a selectable option, as above);
• Allow users to use the Command+Drag operation to temporarily activate a ghost of the initial position (currently, this shortcut duplicates the object, which makes zero sense as the Option+Drag shortcut already does this and there's no need for two redundant shortcuts for the same operation).
As before, if you want me to make a little demonstration video of the intended behaviour, I'm more than happy to do so.

Ah. Right, that setting is just for presenting the document to the screen, the work of rendering the content is still done on the CPU. We do have plans for GPU acceleration, I have started it, but the trouble with Windows is, there is far greater variation in potential hardware, in comparison to the macOS ecosystem.

Tools
We've overhauled most of the core tools, adding subtle new features to make you more productive:
Node tool has a new 'Transform Mode' which provides a containing box for the selected nodes and allows for more freeform editing of the nodes. Node and Pen tools have an utterly amazing Construction mode which gives easy access to common construction features to help you build complicated shapes or intersections accurately and easily, giving you simple access to parallels, right angles, reflected and mirrored angles, in addition to circular construction snaps and all construction intersections. This really needs a video to show how to use it - but it's awesome. Pen tool now has a 'rubber band' mode and also a mode to allow future curves to be added to the current object's curves (for example, the character 'a' is constructed of two curves in a single 'curve object' and this mode makes that construction simpler). Node tool can now auto-snap nodes if you drag a node from one curve over the top of a node from another (selected) curve and pause, it will offer to snap to the same geometry as the node you're hovering over (i.e. modify the on and off-curve nodes to match). This is really useful for trying to reconstruct areas of one curve from another curve. Node tool now allows for lasso selection of nodes by holding the Alt/Ctrl key and dragging a selection lasso. Pencil tool now offers a 'sculpt' mode that allows for extending or manipulating curves in a more natural way. More to come in this area soon. Many tools now allow for 'Alignment widgets' which you can toggle the visibility of in the context toolbar. When enabled you can visually adjust the alignment or even, for example, 'align to centre, snapped to the left edge of this object' by simply click/dragging. Fill tool correctly allows editing of skewed fill handles and newly-created skewed fills draw much nicer now. Ruler origin can be edited by simply dragging the area where the rulers intersect each other - it can even be snapped onto objects in the document. Guides can be edited in most tools by simply dragging a guide in the ruler area. Grid setup is now more interactive: origin can be dragged, axis scale adjusted and angle adjusted on-document, complete with snapping to objects and angles in the document to help you reconstruct useful grids from finished artworks or sketches. By enabling 'Edit in Plane' on the new Isometric Studio, tools can edit objects and appear to make those edits along the currently active plane - extremely useful for artists who enjoy working with any axonometric projections. You can now drag the rotation centre point (when enabled on the context toolbar) while holding Ctrl and it will translate the object - this is actually very useful for positioning and snapping objects relative to others. Shapes tools now have presets so you can create your own favourite shape setups and more easily use them again. There are just far too many subtle tool changes to mention here, but hopefully you'll find the tools much improved
General
New brushes, styles and assets are now shipped with the product. Visible bleed (accessed from the View menu) so you can more easily design into the bleed area - a common feature request. “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Designer will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done. New 'Isometric' Studio makes it easy to setup and work with various axonometric projections within the application. HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Designer. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed. Designer now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request. A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added. New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quickly clipping/unclipping. New "Merge curves/Separate curves" commands. Grids now have an editable number of angle subdivisions. The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved. Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features such as bullets and numbering. Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes. Added support for per-monitor ICC profiles (previously we only used the primary monitor's ICC profile) in the document view (controls still use the primary monitor's ICC profile, which will hopefully be fixed in the future).
Brushes
Designer 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush. Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance. Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control. All pixel brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request.
Adjustments
The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls. The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request. The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten. PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved. The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten. The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider.
Fixes
Numerous other bug fixes - too many to list! -
wtrmlnjuc reacted to HDoowop in Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts Please
I have a Bluetooth keyboard that I use with my IPad and it would be really cool if I could use the regular keyboard shortcuts from desktop on my iPad. Especially considering that there are still a lot of issues with the selection accuracy. Some shortcuts do work, but not all of them. Any chances of making this happen? I think this would really make sense especially if ios13 ends up bringing the iPad closer to a desktop. At that point, creating an option to make designer on iPad look like the desktop app would be cool too.
Thanks
