JeremyTankard got a reaction from tatanka in Publisher color export problem: 100% Black is turning into a mix of CMYK colors when exporting to PDF
The only way I can get 100% solid black when printing from Publisher (v1) and I dare say it will be the same with V2 (not yet printed from them as yet), is to set the colour profgile to Grey and print that way. This now prints black as a solid, if left as a colour profile then it prints single black with a screen or as a 4 colour black.

It's been a nightmare when sending to press, so I let the printer do their thing with the PDF. Even though it prints incorrectly for me (on a Xerox VersaLink C7000), the printer alters the PDF with their own tools.

Interestingly if I export a Pub doc to PDF andf print teh PDF, black prints correctly.
The whole handling of colour in Affinity apps has always confused me with regard to CMYK and printing.
    I hope V2 has solkved this . . .

It's this kind of stuff that makes me feel some regret at jumping all in with Affinity. Aside from the endless frustrations I feel with the UI (particularly with colour swatches), there are some essential features for professionals (like support for 1-bit images and turning off anti-aliasing) that are simply missing. Years go by, with users requesting the same features over and over, and there seems to be little evidence that these features are even on the roadmap.
It makes me wonder if Affinity just doesn't have any print professionals on their team, if they think these things aren't essential.

A year, at least, for this issue.  It's always a little disheartening when something so basic goes for so long without being added.  I've recently started having a need for editing and creating PDFs, too.  Adobe generally makes this expensive, or incredibly frustrating.
I can more or less alter existing PDFs with DeftPDF, but it's also really unpleasant to use.
It's even more disheartening when a free program can do things the paid Affinity apps can't...
I've found that I can layout and design the PDF in Affinity, export the page (pages) as a PNG, then set it (them) as a background image behind everything in LibreOffice Writer, exactly sized to fill the page and perfectly positioned edge to edge.
Then, in Writer I can place all the fillable forms boxes and buttons on top of my design.  If I take good notes about where I positioned guides and elements with their sizes in Affinity, then I can specifically size and position all those elements in Writer absolutely perfectly.
It's certainly not ideal, but it works.  You could also just build out your fillable PDF in Writer... again, for free.  Free PDF viewers open up the exported PDF no problem, and let you fill it out.

(LibreOffice Draw can import PDFs to let you edit them, but this is incredibly frustrating both in terms of how well it imports elements, and using the tools to make changes.)

I think this thread is asking for the same thing as

Are we able to get an update on this feature being added or if it's completely out of scope.

If you are placing a PDF as a Resource on a page as part of a layout that contains other material, then the only way to get a good printout is to Export the new layout as another PDF and then print the PDF from another application.

Same thing with variable - both OpenType fonts, two different outline formats.
But I assumed he was talking about the old PS T-1 fonts.

I'll sort some examples out, screen grabs and PDFs. I've spotted it in various fonts (only Regular weight). I don't think I've seen it in a .ttf font – only looked at .otf. Also only spotted it where many OpenType features are used.

JeremyTankard got a reaction from Alfred in Small caps text
    On a further note:

    In OpenType font coding
the Small Cap feature (smcp) controls lowercase to small cap variants
the Caps to Small Caps feature (c2sc) controls capitals to small cap varaints AND related sorts such as bracket, brace, figures, question, exclam
Affinity apps list three small capital options
    Caps to Small Caps
    Small Caps
    All Small Caps

How does Affinity see 'All Small Caps' behaving?
Currently is does exactly the same as Caps to Small Caps.
A font can be coded many ways and I guess the OT spec is a little abstract with regard to small cap sorts.
Previously the available terms (looking at other apps here) have only listed Small Caps and All Small Caps.
All Small Caps isn't a specific OT feature it is actioned by using smcp and c2sc

    Thanks Dan,
As soon as I put up the question I realised I could to that, same as sending to print – using - and , to select ranges and individual pages.
I guess continuing the thought, it would be useful if there is a way to mark a spread – by colour or note (under the page number)

Hello everybody. It's sad no one had any other insight on this. But I discovered myself a workaround on this issue (as mentioned before, it's a Affinity Publisher software bug, not a PDF rendering / reading problem):
If you link all your images as Affinity Photo files WITH adjustment layers (such as levels, HSB etc) the PDFs exported from Publisher don't generate any grey lines. I hope this can help other people with this issue while we wait for some software update to fix this.
    cheers!

Lots of postings on this and a major issue from me as i get content sent to me in PDF that I am unable to use.
No one solution works every time but my current workarounds are:
Export to PDF in third party programme (FoxIt PDF, Inkscape or Microsoft PDF writer) and convert fonts to curves.
I have downloaded PDF to PNG from freepdfsolutions.com and will give that a try if the above does not work.
It was suggested that fonts from the PDF using a third party tool as an option but this did not work at all for me.
I look forward to hearing about other workarounds or even better a fix in the application!

Yes, it's a known major failing across the Affinity suite. Any PDF with embedded fonts cannot be relied upon to import correctly. This is true if you want to rasterize a PDF in Photo; or load into Designer for editing; or just position a PDF on a page in Publisher.

The only workaround is to Outline the fonts in the PDF using another program: don't use "Text as Curves" in the PDF Export options, use Outline fonts in Acrobat or Illustrator, or GhostScript.

thanks - I'm aware of these options but they are not really comparable with Photoshops 'Save for Web' option particularly without the preview facility which it offers which allows you to see what the resulting JPEG is going to look like....
