  1. I agree. Publisher is a comer. Now if only they had made leading part of paragraph specs/styles instead of a character spec...<sigh>
  2. Haven't used InDesign in the Adobe suite in years, ever since Lightroom trashed my old license when I tried to view a Tiff in it and it couldn't find a current copy of Photoshop. Hence the move to Affinity's suite. The archived InDesign stuff was output to PDF, anyway. That said, I would still rate InDesign the better layout program, so far. But the help from the Affinity forums is extraordinary (good thing). {8>)
  3. Actually, it was the search phrase jmwellborn posted: "Switching Indesign Files Into Affinity Publisher" that didn't work for me.
  4. Win 7, Designer 1.9.1.979 It seems the bounding box changes depending on whether two objects are grouped or not. I haven't tested with Publisher or Photo.
  5. I understand what you are saying and that is my point: the values do not change but the Symbol H for the word "Height' is incorrect. H, meaning Height in English, refers to the vertical dimension or North-South dimension. There may be an engineering description which describes it better than I have. Up and Down Length would be simple terminology. For oddly shaped things or plane figures rotated off the vertical, one would measure from the base of the figure to a horizontal tangent touching the highest point. Height is always the perpendicular measure of something. A measure off the perpendicular, i.e. rotated, is not height, it is length. Affinity's Transform panel shows Length, not Height. A tree growing in a forest could be 300 feet HIGH, but when it is on the ground it is 300 feet LONG. The longest dimension of anything is always called "Length", regardless of orientation. The only exception that I can think of is a 6 ft dead man lying in his coffin. The man could be described as 6 feet TALL but his coffin would be 6 ft (plus a bit) LONG.
  6. The Transform panel does not show Height, it shows Length in all Affinity apps. A can of pop standing up is approx 4¾" high x 2 5/8" wide (120 cm H x 65 cm W). Lying down, it is approx 2 5/8" high by 4¾" wide. However, in all three Affinity applications, a pop can lying down shows as 4¾" HIGH x 2 5/8" wide. On other words, the Transform panel reports LENGTH (not height) regardless of orientation. Please see sample illustrations.
  7. What I wrote was "Three names for the same thing" Actually Indesign could do a whole paragraph underline, last time I used it (more than 5 years ago). Have been weaned off InD and using Publisher for 3 years. Also, the Affinity paragraph highlighter (an underline on steroids) is NOT a decoration. This is a decoration .
  8. Thank you for trying to be helpful Gary, but we are on different wavelengths here. I didn't say I couldn't do it, I was complaining that it was awkward and convoluted to do, when it worked. And there are things it doesn't do that one would expect it would/could. • A "block of text" is common terminology. • A custom palette is a selection of colours of my own making with my own name. I can do it—it's awkward. But it's NOT the Application Palettes and Document Palettes. • Opacity applies to any colour system. • CMYK or RGB, doesn't matter—same problem. • You managed to put in a square bullet. Good. I found it really awkward (there's that word again). You have inadvertently highlighted a another problem with the Affinity Suite: Strange nomenclature (names for things). Examples: Character "Background" (normally called "Highlighting", Paragraph "Decoration" (I thought decorations were "fists", banners, borders, fleurons, etc.) and Text Frame "Fill". Three names for the same thing, but the strangest of these is "Decoration" and way down at the bottom of the paragraph tab where you would never expect to find it. Thanks again for trying Gary. Let it go for now. 🎶⬅️ decoration
  9. Publisher: ■ Using text frame, try to put a block of colour behind a block of text by selecting an existing colour in your document. You don't know when it will colour the frame or colour the type. ■ Try creating a custom colour palette. ■ Custom colours register the CMYK values but NOT the opacity value. You can set the colour value for a text frame but the opacity value is only a guess determined by the position of a slider, not an value box. ■ Create a document palette from the colours in your document. The colours are named "DocFileName 01", -02, -03, etc. No CMYK values if you hover over the small swatches so you cant discriminate small colour differences. Only colours you intentionally put in the palette have CMYK values. ■ Try creating an automated bulleted list with square bullets and changing the width of the tab space. There is a Bullet List maker/customizer. See if you can find it.
  10. I hate to complain but until Affinity "fixes" its absurdly weird colour system, the suite will remain second best compared to Adobe. The Bullet List maker is a total cock-up, too. They are both so irrational that I can't even explain what's wrong with them. Adobe has Aff beaten in this regard, hands down.
  11. Publisher still doesn't want us to change the ruler's zero mark on two facing pages. If you change the ruler origin on the X axis of a master page of two facing pages, you cannot duplicate that ruler origin change by applying that master to facing pages in the publication. The contents of the master page will apply, but NOT the ruler X origin change. If you want the X origin of the ruler, i.e. the zero mark, to be re-centred in between each two facing pages you must change the X origin for each and every pair of facing pages in the publication manually by going to View > Guides Manager > Spread Origin. This should have been fixed long ago. X or Y spread origins could be specified when one is creating a new publication, then it would apply to all pages. At the very least they should be retained in Master pages.

  13. I have some text that I snapped to an isometric grid. Now I want to make that text horizontal again. How do I do that? I can't seem to get it off the isometric grid even if I create a flat grid. Win 7, Aff Designer 1.8.5.703
  14. I would never use the three icons you refer to for moving layers, only for cutting or adding sections. BTW, I respect Walt highly. I don't know if he is a paid evangelist for the products, but he should be canonized after he is gone. He has made the Affinity products useful for me and many others. However, things can still be improved.
  15. Perhaps it has, but it is too fussy and poorly implemented. The visual feedback is almost non-existent. Now I have to stop and find a very hard to see blue bar, or part of a bar, to make sure what I want to have happen will actually happen. And then I have to check that it happened the way it should have. With respect Walt, this is not good.
  16. I couldn't agree more, Jowday. Well I did a layer movement test and the comments of Walt and Ziplock are accurate. but not the screen shots. The blue rectangle, truncated in this instance, is very hard to see AND there is no red marker at either end of it. It's questionable whether the red marker would be much use if one is moving quickly. The attached image below is also 123% bigger than what's on my screen. No use with a light UI, which is my standard. I thought that only if you put the cursor ON the icon would the layer moved become subordinate to it. Who changed the system? Why weren't we told? And if I need a mask, I'll make one. The way it is now is hard to see and creates mistakes. I.E.it's counter-productive. It's become the Swiss army knife of functions: cute to have for paring your nails but not what you need on a construction site. Not just useless, it actually gets in the way. Or as the Brits say, "Too clever by half."
  17. This is a joke, right? Ditto the screen snips from Walt. You guys just want to have fun with an old man by screwing up my mind, don't you? 😒 Give me a few minutes to try it out to see if you are on the level. I'll get back to you. ☁️
  18. I am careful about where I drop it, but somehow it rarely ends up where I think it' should. What does the size of the blue highlight indicate? Sam
  19. I used to use Illustrator, Photoshop and Designer a lot. Changed to Affinity suite some time ago. Have been working on logos over Christmas. One of my designs has over 90 layers. Another 30 layers. My experience in all 3 AF pgms with layers has been painfully bad regardless of the number of layers. When I move a layer up or down there is a 50-50 chance it will NOT end up where I put it. I am tempted to call it a bug. Yes, I am careful not to click on the icon unless I want it to be subsumed under that layer. Ending up in the wrong place when moving a layer happens so many times in the course of a project, in all 3 AF apps, that I consider the feature to be almost unusable. Some software designer has decided to do my thinking for me with the design of this "feature". I almost NEVER want one layer to be automatically subsumed by (incorporated in, made subordinate to, stuck under, hidden within) another. I suggest you go back and make it simple again. KISS. Or, put in a switch so I can turn that time-wasting feature OFF. I'll group or merge layers when/if I want to. There are lots of good features in the Affinity suite to be sure but AFF's hide & seek layering is not one of them.
