Yes, I was merely suggesting to LisaZ that if she were to work with normal text her problem would vanish.
But if I said it too cryptically, I'm glad you clarified.

I've just downloaded the latest Beta of Publisher, and am trialing it. I have used Pagemaker then Quark Xpress and then InDesign professionally since 1989, and was an official Beta tester for Aldus (the original developers of Freehand and Pagemaker) so have a strong knowledge of applications for the Mac over quite a number of years.
So far this application looks promising, though within 10 minutes of use I have found that I cannot select words or insert the cursor into a text box once it's been filled with text (I'm just using place-holder text at this stage.) Has anyone else come across this issue? Also is there a work around? I've tried using the boxed T tool and also the A tool, but neither will select anything less than the whole text story.

Hi Jon.  Hopefully your explanation and the accompanying screenshot will make it into the official Publisher Help  when the release version is ready.  I fiddled and fiddled to work this out, and I’ll bet lots of others did too.   It is such a slick operation, when we know how!!!

    Hi Jon P
Thanks to the example that you included in your response, I saw the section that I had overlooked and turned out to be the missing link. After correction, the numbering is as it should be. Thanks for this eye opener.

    Hi Pascho,
If I understand correctly, you just want to set your second section to restart page numbering at 1, and then have all subsequent sections continue from that point, similar to attached?
    Thanks

    Hi @Seneca,
    Sorry for the delayed reply.
I have logged this with our developers.
    Thanks,

Yes, I understand that part, but here we were talking about the program automatically continuing the story at the end of the document, on whatever page the end happens to be, not necessarily on the "several pages later" that you have in mind.

    Interesting point!
    Thanks, as always.

    Hi Jeremy,
We are aware of this affecting our mac apps, it's logged with us and will hopefully be resolved in the future.
    Thanks

When you close an unsaved document, you're prompted to save. Click Save, and the document is saved but remains open. If a saved document is closed, then it closes as expected.
I've personally seen this in Publisher, but others have reported seeing it in all 3 apps.

Of course it does. You tell it what text fame you want by drawing it on the page.
Let me be clear. I know how to solve this particular problem. If you create text boxes on facing pages on a master page and connect them then things work OK.
That's the method I would use for long documents anyway.
What I'm saying here is that there should be an equivalence, I think, that if somebody doesn't want to use text placeholders on master pages this way should work too.

This is a case for a manual text placement. A publishing software like Publisher is not capable of reading your mind where the next page of an article should go.
We are talking here about automated way of placing text on each page.

When would you want contents of a second text box created on page 1 to skip (say) fifty pages and continue on page 51?
    (I admit to being dim.)

    I don't think you did.
Create a new page and put a primary text frame. Insert enough text into this text frame so that when you shift-click the triangle new pages and text boxes are automatically added to the pages.
Go back to page 1. Create a secondary text frame and insert some text. Then shift-click the triangle to add this text the other pages. Instead this new text is added to new pages at the back of the existing pages. These text frames are never added on the existing pages.

I don't know, to be honest. I tried to reproduce that with a 28 page document, and Publisher crashed

    Question 1:
Upon brief testing it appears not to happen in documents newly created in Beta 257 when I start completely from scratch.
But if I create a new document but then copy and paste text boxes from a document created in a previous beta it still happens but only with those text boxes. It does not happen with a new text box.
    Question 2:
If I open a document created in a previous beta it happens all the time. If I create a new document then it appears not to happen.

I hadn't noticed it not happening in newly created documents because I actually hadn't created a totally new document since Beta 257 was released. I had been using a 'template' I use for the jobs I was doing in Publisher.

I am using Beta 257 on an iMac running macOS 10.13.6 as well.

As far as I know this area of Publisher is still work in progress so I don't think that anyone can suggest a design that is future-proof.
What you should do, though, is to keep all your documents up to date as regards to the latest Publisher beta so that if you need to make changes or update your documents at least you can open them.

Publisher will do some of that now. Create a Text Frame on a document page, and put as much text into it as you want. Shift-click on the link icon and you have as many pages as are needed to hold the text, with text frames identical to the one you started in. It will also let you change the formatting  of the text in the frames. However, at this point you can't change the layout of all those frames (width, height, position on all the pages) without playing some games that have odd behavior and bugs. So, yes, improvements are needed.
But I was asking about the contention that it lacks a text editor, and you've said a text editor doesn't need to worry about pagination.
While I think that Publisher's text editor may lack some nice functions (yes, a GREP-based Find/Replace would be good), I would say that it does have one.

Are you perhaps forgetting to set this option when you Open the PDF?

If that's not it, can you provide a sample PDF that has the problem? I don't (usually) have that issue.

This works for me (not a regex search, just a normal one). The Paragraph mark came from the pulldown, and there's a space in the Replace field:
