cubesquareredux reacted to Patrick Connor in Affinity Publisher for macOS - 1.7.3
We are pleased to announce an update for the macOS release of Affinity Publisher, version 1.7.3
    Changes in this build
The changes in Affinity Publisher for macOS 1.7.3 (made since the last release Affinity Publisher 1.7.2) are as follows:
     Text Handling
Pasting text could replace unselected text under certain circumstances. Text frames wrapping around other text frames only use z-order if both have wrap. Fix for Text on a Path handle snapping / jumping. (Win) Character page dropdowns not working when using select tool. Print and Export
(Mac) Fix for crash printing CMYK documents with Embedded RGB documents. (Mac) PDF Export: Allow advanced features checkbox was missing. General
Fix for masked adjustment groups drawing incorrectly. Fixed odd behaviour with transform panel adjusting size of sheared objects. (Win) Fix for failures when installed to folder with a non-ANSI path. Fixed failure to import .ABR brushes. Fixes for stability issues that have been logged with us. Plus Translation and Help updates. This thread is for commenting on this announcement. Please do not post bugs or problems that you find when using this version of the software in this thread, instead make a new thread in the Publisher Bugs on macOS section and questions about usage go in the Desktop Questions forum.
UPDATING TO THIS VERSION (Free for existing customers)
The software version can be seen on the splash screen and the About dialog (in application menu, Affinity Publisher > About).
If you’ve purchased from the Mac App Store— updates are done automatically next time you run your software after it is available in the Mac App Store. If this does not happen for you, open the Mac App Store app and go to the Updates page and then Store > Reload page or press CMD+R. This should hopefully force the update to show. Apple sometimes phase roll outs around the world which can mean it may take up to 72 hours for your update to be available.
If you’ve purchased from the Affinity Store— each time you start the software it will check for updates and offer to download and install any available update, or in the application main menu there is an option Check for Updates. You can download the latest installer by logging into the affinity store here and find the order in your account and use the "download" button in there. Alternatively, this new release (and previous versions of Affinity Publisher for macOS) can be downloaded from this link (that installer is NOT for Mac App Store purchases and needs a product key).

gascoyneone, the file you are trying to open, click on it in Finder, and go File > Get Info. In the Get Info window, there's a section lower down that says "Open With". Make sure it's set to Affinity Publisher and not Affinity Publisher Beta. Once you've set it to NOT be the beta, click the Change All... button. This assumes that the retail version is downloaded and properly in the Applications folder. You should also trash the beta app as it will no longer work as you've seen.

Was it really necessary to make the expiry date for the .399 beta so close to the actual release?
I received my pre-ordered license codes this morning at 8am. Tried to print something from the .399 beta today before I had the chance to make the switch to 'Retail', only to get a "Beta Expired" message, and at a time when I didn't have internet access to download etc.

Just to remind anyone asking 'how can this be RC1 when 'insert feature here' is still broken?!?' ... well, the reality is that the rest of the product is greatly improved and those specific things were also present in the last version - which was itself a released product - so it's not a blocker... it's admittedly not what we'd hope for, but as I said, the rest of the product it vastly improved and is very stable, so why would we not want to release at this point? It's not like we're now going to all give up or something, and it's also not like there isn't going to be a 1.7.1 version along shortly after release, so all these things will get sorted out along the road. They're a priority and I feel bad they're not right yet, but all things will be sorted in time...

Thank you for quickly reporting the file issues highlighted by the changes for Linked and Embedded resources and bearing with us while we ironed those out. We are pleased to announce Build 337 which fixes the following issues in Builds 330 & 326 which were withdrawn.
    [337]
    - After modifying an embedded file you could no longer save the document
    - After replacing a linked resource the document could become corrupted and could not be re opened.
    - Making multiple resources linked in the Resource manager could crash the application
    - The application could fail to save to folder linked to OneDrive
    [330]
    - Converting an Embedded resource to Linked could delete the original resource
    - Replacing Image on a placed PDF could leave Resource Manager in an inconsistent state
    - Crash copying and pasting embedded document resources
    Status: Public Beta
    Purpose: Stability and General Testing
Requirements: Mac OS 10.9 or above
    Hi,
We are pleased to announce that Affinity Publisher build 337 is now available as a manual download from the link above. To be notified when there is a new beta please press follow on this announcement thread.
As this is a beta it is considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity where you may be adversely affected by the application failing, including the total loss of any documents.
We hope you enjoy the product, and as always, if you've got any problems installing or running up, please don't hesitate to post in this thread.
Any problems actually using this version please make a new topic in this forum and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. Please feel free to leave general suggestions and comments in the Discussion Forum.
Many thanks for your continued feedback.

    Fixes and Improvements
    A Note about Linked Images
Backing data and hi-res previews are now discarded for linked images when the containing document is saved, resulting in a drop in Publication file size. Please note that unfortunately this will not apply for linked images in existing documents, they will have to be replaced in order to see an effect. When a document with linked images is opened you may now momentarily see a low-res preview before the full image is loaded and 'pops in'. This is expected behaviour.

    Hi A_B_C.,
Sorry I missed your post - yes, it is specifically the action of converting an 'embedded document' (pdf, psd, svg, affinity documents) from embedded to linked that creates a document that cannot be re-opened. As it happens, conversion between embedded and linked is fine for placed raster data (jpeg, png etc). Hopefully we should have a fix soon. In the meantime, as always, but especially if using 330, please keep regular backups.

The white background of the pinning panel has indeed been fixed, and the panel can be resized, but there is no scrollbar to indicate that the panel is not completely displayed and when it is grouped with other panels that are stacked on other panels it does not always expand to show its full content when it could easily claim the space.
    Still an improvement though

    Hello @AdamW
    Thank you for this release.
Download on my side was good, no stop, no real lag.
no issue with installation, took around 3min (yes my mbp is not that recent)
1st launch was a bit slower than previous build, still no new splash screen there but the old black square thing !
loaded a project made with previous build version was quite fast no warning message, no lag.
Did Export of that project made with previous build was fast for TIFF, better with PSD compared to previous build but i've noticed the software now open the exported document straight forward not giving us choice if we want it to load with default software or just save it and open later (maybe i'm missing something here,if so, please teach me how to fix).
Also i've noticed the interface is more crisp and clear than previous version, in the same time i've noticed the change in the toogle preview mode button.
the over all thing is Okay, even if i still need to give a serious try.

I'd like to see the ability to separate a tab from the rest of my open documents. Currently it appears you can only have one or the other - Separated Mode on or off. Separated Mode kind of messes with the UI so the ability to separate a tabbed document without changing with the UI would be great. This comes in handy to drag items from one document to another.
I guess this is really a suggestion for all the Affinity apps, but I think it's in Photo that it would be most useful.

I just discovered something interesting (on Windows):
With two documents open and tabbed do the following:
drag one tab to make it floating and then drag it to the left end of the screen. This puts the document window on the left half of the screen and shows on the right half all open windows (this is a Windows standard behaviour). in the right half you click on APub and it resizes to fill the right half of the screen. drag the remaining tab to make it float and then drag it to the right end of the screen. Result: two documents neatly side by side. This also works with four files in the corners of the screen. But it is certainly not as flexible as built in arrange capabilities.
I've sworn to myself not to comment on Brexit. So I won't say anything about the second part of your post

You can also just drag them from their docked positions but trying to easily arrange two documents side by side is just as frustrating as Brexit at the moment

Discussed HERE sort of. I think it shouldn't have to be either/or. You should be able to click and drag a tab away and let it become a separate window like practically every other app works with tabs while the remaining tabs stay in place - Creative Suite, Safari, Finder, any app that uses the built-in macOS tabs does it this way.

The menu options are separated by a divider because they work in two different ways. The first three options are dynamic: they are done at draw time by glyph substitution, possibly using OpenType features, without changing the underlying characters. This means they are part of character formatting and can be used in text styles. It also means they can be switched off, because the underlying characters are still there. The other options are one-shot. They don't just effect how the characters are drawn, they actually edit the text as if you had typed in the capitals yourself. This means they aren't formatting, and can't be part of text styles or switched off. That's why they behave differently and why the second group don't get ticks.

    New Features
    Pinned Objects for Text
It is now possible to 'pin' objects to a specific location in the text flow. As text is edited and reflows, the object travels with its pin.
To access this feature you can use the 'Float with Text' or 'Inline with Text' buttons on the main toolbar. Further control of the object's placement is available via the 'Pinning Panel' (View > Studio > Pinning)
    DocX Import
DocX is now offered as an option for import wherever txt and rtf were previously available (for example File > Place). It is chiefly designed with import of text content in mind.
Due to the wide variety of docx documents out there we will inevitably encounter issues and indeed there are features we won't initially support, for example:
    - DrawingML
    - Fields
    - Footnotes and Endnotes
    - Multi-page tables
If you have docx documents that are failing to import we would encourage you to share them with us if possible.
