Hello - I'm still getting used to Affinity, but I think I'm over the hump and it's great - setting up keyboard shortcuts up like crazy!
Is there a way to set a keyboard shortcut for "Lock children"? I can only find it in the context(?) menu.

+1 For saving workspace as well. To say it's unnecessary is ridiculous: a bit like saying you don't need a spout on a kettle as you can get the boiling water out of where you put in.

At the moment, only the colour of the layer can be changed, it's been requested previously to have a thicker line option so that these colours are more obvious, I'll update the improvement report with your comments
In the meantime, I'd recommend using a bolder or brighter colour, as this may 'jump out' a little more at a glance!

Select your object and at the top of the toolbar will display certain icons. 
The one in the middle is to hide the Selection Box, it only disappears while dragging.
 
Otherwise, holding Spacebar hides it.
 
It's too bad it can't always be on,
you will need to tap this button every time you open up AD.
 

Please make this a toggle!  I've mostly switched from AI to AD, but I have to say that everytime I use AD, I wonder how graphics programmers could not implement hiding the selection border - it is such a basic necessity when working in computer graphics.

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
Drag the image/texture layer over the shape layer you want to use as a clipping layer in the Layers panel (over the area on the right, not over its thumbnail).
Another way is to copy the image/texture, then select the shape and go to menu Edit ▸ Paste Inside.

Go to the context toolbar and tick Lock Children (Move Tool), so you can edit the parent layer without affecting its contents.
