[Mask is not working.]

Thank you I thought I could do it in both personas.

I am following step by step the directions on properly masking the tool. But every time I use a black brush to write on the masked layer (as the directions on YouTube tutorials states) it creates ANOTHER layer above it with my brush stroke. It’s supposed to brush within the masked layer. Not sure why please help.
