I'm the developer of Typeface app for Mac — would love to integrate with the Affinity suite to get better support for font collections. Currently it's possible to drag and drop from Typeface to Affinity, but it would be nice to have your custom tags/sets in the font picker as well. Fingers crossed for a plugin system in v2, that would be amazing

So, QuarkXPress 3 apparently wasn't ready for "professional typesetting" either, right?
And yet, thousands of professionals have been using it professionally for a whole decade, including yours truly… (Not to speak of thousands of wannabe professionals who never bothered to change QXP's abysmal default settings…)
    In other words:
While APu lacks some of the automatic tools we've been used to from InDesign, and which I, for one, am missing as well, it's got a plenty of manual tools to fix the most of any typographic issues if needed. All it requires is the eye of a professional designer to recognize those issues in the first place.
    In other other words:
APu may not be the best tool for every job, but it is ready if you're ready.
    That all said…
Serif, please give us the advanced word underline features already!

+1. Came across this today. This is a basic typography feature, not something worth some kind of workaround. Looks like the more I use Publisher, the more I ran into those "missing basic typography features".

That would be exactly what I would like to be addressed by Serif as soon as possible! It looks like that it has been confused by others here in this discussion with "decorations" on the paragraph level, which are significantly more advanced in the Affinity apps as of now (v1.9).
On the character level, however, where "Underline", "Strikethrough" etc. live, there's still almost no way to customize any of those lines. More often than not the default provided by the program looks quite awkward in connection with the actual font in use.
I think that just anybody who cares for decent typography absolutely needs to be able to tweak underline options on a character style level. So please, Serif, add this in version 2 – it will be highly appreciated!
If I could ask for even more, I'd love to have the option(!) to have an underline applied "intelligently" by the program – i.e. skipping characters with descenders and so avoiding ugly "strikethroughs" of (just the) descenders. I guess there must be a way to automate such a behaviour as I recently saw underlined links on a webpage featuring the look I'm speaking of (see attachment). I don't really think this has been done by hand for each of the characters with no visible underline (g, comma, parentheses). You'd think: if this can be done for web by CSS or Javascript (or whatever), it should be possible for a desktop design app as well...

Being part part of the 'Guides Management' pane I'd expect to be able to 'Show' and 'Hide' them by simply showing or hiding guides?

    Dear Affinity team,
I really like the software, the Publisher really has the opportunity to replace the Adobe package in typesetting and graphic design. I've already started making youtube tutorials for friends in Slovakia to make their transition to AP as easy as possible. On the other hand, I would like to ask about the availability of some features (or if you plan to add them in the near future).
The text underlining is currently limited to functionality that is not absolutely usable for typesetting (crossing out decenders/loops, different line width comparing to stroke etc.). Adjustment of the offset and line thickness are missing. Typically, the typographer will simply set them up to avoid these visual problems. Since these are essential requirements for using this tool, do you plan adding them?

Suddenly all my assets I've been creating in Publisher are gone. The menu drop down no longer shows the set I've been making. I checked the Histroy tab and it didn't show I'd deleted them and I checked the Windows recycle bin and there is nothing there. I've searched the computer for AFASSET files without luck. I may have accidentally deleted them but how can I get them back? I can't believe that they are this vulnerable. Thanks

robskinn reacted to LJM in Allow All Affinity Applications to Link Documents and/or Share Application-level Symbols
Feature Request 1: Consider allowing all applications in the Affinity Suit to link documents like Affinity Publisher.
Feature Request 2: If/when linking across all Affinity Applications is possible, consider allowing the user to select not only select a specific art board or the entire document but also any layer at any level in the layers hierarchy of a linked or embedded document.
Feature Request 3: Similar to linking, consider allowing for application-level symbols. Currently, symbols only exist at the document level. Such a feature achieves the same ends in feature requests 1 and 2 on the same computer.

For example, if a company creates a logo that is to be up to date in any subsequent work such as app and website UI mockups in Affinity Designer, print-like publications in Affinity Publisher, and photos in the editing stage in Affinity Photo, it would be great if feature request 3 is implemented to allow for an application-level symbol to hold that logo so that any changes to it synchronize across all other Affinity documents containing this application-level symbol. Extending the example to feature requests 1 and 2, if the company hosts the file on a server from which their designers’ computers can access it, they could simply link to it instead of embed it so that changes to the master logo file occur in real time to all Affinity documents that link to it.

Making PDF's accessible is making them readable by screen readers. 100% The requirements are tough. It is actually not a kids game. Have you tried using a screen reader or witnessed anyone using one? Did you try making just one PDF accessible in Adobe Acrobat Pro? Making anything accessible requires a qualified person and the right tool. You don't just convert a file and make a few headlines.
Have you tried making accessible tables? I suppose you haven't.
So Government agencies/whoever do this with professional software for this purpose. And files uploaded to government websites MUST be accessible. Not "almost there". Not just in the right file format. They have to be CORRECT and VALID. Accessible by ANY citizen.
We had the pleasure of visiting gov.uk a few times exchanging knowledge. Ambitious and great people. You could learn a thing or two from them.
You know exactly nothing about the topic but yell very loud with crazy statements. It is not exactly interesting or enlightening having this conversation with you.

I'd be very interested in understanding how Publisher will address accessibility in their exported PDFs. Currently there is no way to tailor a document to export a PDF with any acknowledgement of A11y. I appreciate that it's early days. I just hope it hasn't been left too late. InDesign has been trying to address it, but it too was appalling in its early versions. I expected that a progressive new app might be thinking about this and build it in from the very beginning — after all we are building documents for screen so often, we can't just ignore the requirements of so many.

Although in Preferences both versions of English are shown, in the Language window of the Characters panel the only option is English, main no distinction between any of the many variations of English.
And as I mentioned before, when I run a spell check my usual English spellings of words such as colour are wrongly flagged up. An important issue for those of us who work in the UK, and probably on Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc, who generally follow British spelling norms and not those favoured by the US.
This forum is this same, constantly changing my English spellings for the US equivalent.

I would love to see an option when saving JPG, PNG and GIF files to losslessly compress them and remove unnecessary junk in order to achieve minimal file size :) ...
Something like ImageOptim does (with tools like PNGCrush, MozJPEG, Zopfli, AdvPNG, Jpegoptim, Gifsicle, SVGO and PNGOUT).

And bonus: Images that are used as Resources in Affinity Photo and Designer can be losslessly minified as well (in affinity photo there was saving 10MB from 51MB = 20% on my test run)

    Hi robskinn,
With the object selected, go to menu Layer > Convert Object to Artboard. You can assign a shortcut to this command to speed up the process in Affinity Preferences, Keyboard Shortcuts section, set the first dropdown to Designer and the second to Layer (the command is almost on the bottom of the list - in the same order as they appear on the menus). If you want to retain the original object, duplicate it (or all of them at once) before converting it (them) to an artboard.
