I saw in another thread that affinity is going to disable the reset rotation feature. Is that true? Please confirm. If it is true, for the love of all that is good and decent in the world, please don't. Thank you.
Notes:
All credits belong to Affinity team :) It is not 100% copy of original Help in AD. The formatting is slightly different (page layout, bullets, colours, etc.) so don't be confused. The file format is .ibooks. Sorry, I didn't use EPUB or other but I guess every user has iBooks installed :) Sorry if some references / hyperlinks are missing. I use old-fashioned "copy&paste" method to create this file. I've exported this file from iBooks Author to PDF too, but for some reason the hyperlinks don't work. Anyway if you prefer PDF here is the download link.
Carlavsa,
Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums
This help is for a very old version of the software. You may prefer to read the latest version of the help in a browser

(which is also available in all supported languages)
I agree there should be a dedicated "crop to selection" feature even though Designer is not intended to be a dedicated photo editing program. I'd love to have Designer be my one tool for daily "drawing/painting" tasks. Obviously, if I need really sophisticated photo editing, I'd use a dedicated tool, but cropping is a *super* basic feature in my opinion.
At the very least, if I select part of an image with the rectangular marquee tool, it should copy what's selected, not the whole image/layer. I've never used a drawing/paint application in my life that doesn't copy the current selection to the clipboard. It's making me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or missing a trick. Anyway, if copying the selection were possible, we could achieve cropping with Ctrl+C then Ctrl+Alt+Shft+N.
EDIT: I think I get it. The layer needs to be rasterized, then what is selected with marquee will be copied properly to the clipboard.
If you want a quickly destructive crop of a raster image document draw a rectangle to define the size of the crop, drag the image layer over the rectangle layer in the Layers panel and export it - don't forget to change the Area dropdown on the Export dialog to Selection with (or without) background. No need to go to Export Persona.
Hi createsean,
Buying Affinity Photo & using it together with Affinity Designer allows you to do things that are otherwise difficult or impossible to do. You can seamlessly switch between them without having to stop & save your work via the File > Edit in Photo/Designer menu item, too.
That said, there may be a simpler way to crop a raster image document in AD if your intent is to convert it to a raster format file like PNG, JPEG, or TIFF: just switch to the Export persona use the Slice tool like a crop tool to create a new slice. In the Slices panel you get a new slice (default name is "slice1" but you can change that. Select it, choose the export options you want from the Export Options panel, then click on the 'export single item' next to it (looks like a box with an upward pointing arrow) & that cropped sliced will be saved without any of the other part of the image included.
Not just Procreate but a few other apps that I use on the iPad. I hadn't realized how much I liked the feature until I used apps that don't have it. Again I don't think it is an essential, so no offense taken. It's just a really nice feature I would love see added to apps (AP and AD) that I'm using more and more these days. Hopefully (?) it's a small enough thing to implement in a future update that can be turned on or off for those that want it. I enjoy seeing all the video clips from artists using Procreate and sharing mine. Would love to see more clips of artists using AP and AD especially.
Is there any way to enable canvas rotation with hand gestures on the touch screen? For instance, in Photoshop, you can place two fingers on the screen and rotate them, and the canvas will rotate in that direction. I can't seem to find any setting to enable it and its very frustrating not being able to shift my canvas around freely when I'm drawing. I end up just turning my whole tablet around, which is very inconvenient.
@Pnp The best way is to look up the tool name, (the ? On the app will give you the name), then flick through the pages to see what info is offered. I've attached a couple of samples from my Desiner file but the same approach will work for the photo file.
You are referring to 'Context Menus', the ones that appear at the bottom of the screen and allow you to fine tune the tools effects. As far as I am aware the tutorials do not cover theses settings. The good news is that they are included in the apps Help file, though a little hard to see some symbols.
You could download the PDF Help file which contains the information you seek, and allows you to expand the images to see them more clearly. The PDF Help file is located in the Resources thread. There is a PDF Help file for both Photo and Designer (for iOS).
Hi everyone,
Hello Serif. Great job with Affinity Designer. One feature request for Affinity Designer’s colour picker. Because of iOS’ sandboxing of apps, which is great in many ways, it gets in the way of easily using an external colour picker, and put a colour value into Affinity Designer.
For Affinity Designer, can you allow the built-in colour picker to...
- Select a colour from an image.
- Select a colour from a website
- Select a colour from a document
With the colour palettes in Affinity Designer, can you allow to...
- Create a colour palette from an image
- Import/Export a colour palette?
Again, great work from everyone at Serif! Love it.
As a web designer, I find websites like uiGradients.com a quite useful resource, with a massive selection of ready-made gradients (and css code for those).
This palette is a complete (01.09.2018) pack of all gradients alongside their names, hand-imported over the course of an afternoon and a few podcasts.
I don't think you can copyright colors/gradients, but the GitHub repository of the uiGradients.com website is licensed under MIT. I'll try to keep the file up to date with the website, but if there's a missing gradient or a error, please tell me about it.
Enjoy: uiGradients.com.zip
Hi fellow Affinity users. Having been confined to the house during the Covid pandemic I have taken the opportunity to update the Designer PDF help file to version 1.9 There have been numerous feature additions in this version so you may benefit from updating. I hope you find it useful.
I have attached a lower resolution copy of the PDF version of the Affinity Designer IPad apps built in Help file directly to this post. See below. (I have also attached a less compressed (higher resolution) copy's Dropbox “link” to a PDF version).
You can open the PDF file in a reader or iBook allowing you to view and search the help file while working on a document in Affinity Designer. All links within the document should be working.
I hope you find it as useful as I do.
Please note that this PDF is not in any way supported by Affinity, nor are they responsible for any errors or omissions, so please do not refer any errors or omissions in the Document to Affinity. Every attempt has been made (by me) to ensure the content is an accurate representation of the built in Help file, however some errors 'may' have slipped through .
I will endeavour to keep it up to date (at least for a little while) . When Publisher comes out I may redo the layout (Pages is a little limited in the area of indexing).
My Dropbox account is basic and limits daily bandwidth, if you experience a problem downloading just try again next day.

Hi there!
I just wanted to share a list of Free for Commercial Use Fonts. This is a curated[*] list of some of the best freely available Fonts out there. The criteria I had in order to come up with this list:
They have to be either Free or Open Source Fonts.
They can be used in commercial projects (some restrictions may vary from Font to Font, so be sure to read first). I made my best to ensure this point, but I could be wrong and I'd be more that happy if you let me know if I made a mistake.
No attribution required.
In some cases (Serif and Sans Serif), they have to have more than two weights (at least one italic included).
Support for Spanish characters like Á, Ü, ¿¡!?, Ññ (since I speak Spanish, this was mandatory, but there are many more good Fonts that don't cover this criteria).
[*] I have basic knowledge about typography, but I have read reviews from well educated people in order to ensure quality.
Well, here it is the list. As you can see, they are grouped by classification, and a general one in that regard. Some of the Serif and Sans Serif fonts were included in "Headlines" because they had one weight or they had no italics/oblique.
[UPDATE] Added notes on some cases, like what the Font can be an alternative of.
[UPDATE] Added the number of Fonts.
[UPDATE] Adding previews of the fonts... eventhough some of them won't look as good, but it will help before clicking on a link.
[UPDATE] Where possible, I added a link to real life examples linking to Fonts In Use, for inspiration.

Now that you mention it I definitely notice they switched. But not following. When I press the arrow to manually switch one the other switches for the other tool. So if it is white for eye dropper and I switch it to black. Then when I go back to the brush tool it is now the opposite color.
---Edit --
Aww fudge I see there is a difference between touching the little tool switcher and the colors. Thanks @GabrielM if you hadn't pointed that out I don't think I would have found that out playing around unless I hit it by accident. I think that was my biggest pet peeve. This will definitely make AP/AD more usable for me!
You do not have the same colour palette selected on both tools. When you use the Colour Pick tool, you have the "right" circle as your foreground colour.
When you switch to the brush tool you have the "left" circle as the foreground colour. . Choose either left or right for both tools and they will work properly
