  1. I had hoped that there would be a fix for the pixel tool, which is broken for both the Mac (intel) and iPad versions. I reported on this issue before, but as no improvement has been made I would like to bring it to the attention. It affects many of the standard brushes like the pencils and airbrushes. The pressure dynamics is somehow broken so it either makes no mark or a mark at full pressure. I hope to see a fix for this as it is something I like  to use.

It is hard to save the files into common formats (.ai) which are necessary to share the files with suppliers, manufacturers and clients.

If you really need to send .ai files to third parties and cannot get them to accept the Affinity formats directly, you may have little choice but to stick with what you are using (or find new suppliers, manufacturers and clients to replace the ones who insist on these formats).

As AI is a propriety format by Adobe, you will only be able to use them in Adobe Software. I do not know what line of work you do, so I cannot say if another vector format would also work for the supplier. I would recommend using EPS for most printing, SVG for other applications. I can see that switching away from Adobe can be difficult, as no design software will be able to give you the same workflow, so if you want to switch you may have to make some compromises. It took me some time to adopt to Affinity, but I think the time I spent with it was well spent, as I feel I can work very efficiently in Affinity, in some thing even more efficient than Adobe. But how you fare will depend on your requirements an your ability to adapt. If you are a small business and the Sub is to high an investment to make in relation to the income, I think Affinity is a good compromise. Otherwise you might want to try Corel Draw or Quark Xpress?

Probably not the only one. One still hopes that announced things are finally realized …

Wohl nicht der einzige. Man hofft noch immer, dass Angekündigtes endlich verwirklicht wird …

I guess it all comes down to the expectations. I agree 100% that Affinity would need a couple of features to really compete with Illustrator for everyone. How much you rely on these features to do your work determines your success or failure in using Designer. For me, there are things I would like to see, but I have about 95% of the features I need ATM. If you need Live-Trace or Vector transform all the time, then AD is not for you right now, and you would need to try Corel or Adobe. But it would make little sense for Affinity to add a feature like trace when it works badly. Inkscape, Vectorstyler and Vectornator all have this feature, but the results are very poor most of the time, especially for color images. Even Illustrator is not very good at that. And if you only need B/W vectorisations, either trace yourself or use an online convertor. Only if Affinity adds one that does a proper job am I going to use it.

Well well well, this thread (and many others) goes on and on and on. This week I finally made a career move away from my last few hands on tasks in Illustrator and InDesign to project management and project work in large and huge projects full time. Good stuff. For me Affinity was a fruitless wait since 2014. Also it was unbearable to see software developed like it is. The year is 2021. Not 1995.

Just imagine that these tools will not come to Affinity at all or in a form you don't like. Imagine if Affinity still rasterizes so much more than professional products. Imagine if all current issues and usability issues will not be resolved. Imagine spending the same amount of time on workarounds for years. How long will and can you wait?

There is no such thing as a free lunch. But time has a value.

Amazing that an ex-user still have so much time to whine about the software you don't want to use. Of course there are things Affinity does not do as well as some would like. But no one is forcing you to use it and no app is for everyone. I miss some things in Affinity too, but for me as a whole it has giving me a lot and I like to use the apps, despite some shortcomings. If you want more advanced vector support but not illustrator, just try Vectorstyler. This is an app with great potential, and many of the features Affinity users request. Despite that the UX is still better with Affinity so its only a side gig.

  5. Hi Sean,

I have not rezised any of the artboards in the linked symbols document. I usually create a new symbol in the area outside of the artboards, which I then select and use the artboard tool to create an artboard from the selection. I don't believe I have changed the size of the artboards after that. But even minor changes (like changing the color of an element) within the existing artboards causes the weird resizing issues. The only thing that I duplicated and resized were the linked files in my map document, not the orginal files.

  6. Hi Sean,

I tried the latest Beta with my file, I made the images linked again, then updated the linked file with a small modification. It gave the same problem as before. I am not sure, but perhaps it has something to do with the way the images are placed? I placed the AFdesign file into my document and selected the artboard I needed. I then alt-dragged the placed file to make a copy and select another artboard. I then usually rescale these placed linked files to make them fit. I do not have the time to test this right now, but perhaps this could cause a problem. The thing is: the rescaling seems completely random, as some things are made much smaller and others bigger. See this short screencapture when I update the link in the new beta (which takes forever by the way, even if the file are not abnormally big, and it normally updated the links automatically with out delay...)

  7. I can not share the file, as it is client work. I will try to describe what is happening:

I have a Designer file that has the map with roads and landscape features. To this map I have created symbols of landmarks and features. I created these in a separate document. Each symbol in this document is on its own artboard. I then place the file in the Map file, and select the artboard from the dropdown menu. I do this for all symbols (in fact, I tend to just duplicate the linked symbol and select another artboard as its faster), but as these symbols are not all used in the same size I have to manually rescale them. Not all symbols are scaled the same amount. Before the update, I could change things in the symbols document and have it reflected in the map document. After the update, the scaling is messed up, so some symbols are much smaller, whilst others are bigger. I have not really understood what makes this happen.

  8. I have a big problem with linked resources in v. 1.9.1. I am creating a map with a lot of symbols created in one AD file, and another AD file with the map, where the other symbols file is linked to. The symbols file contains an artboard for each symbol, and the symbols are used at various scales in the map document. After the update, the scale of the linked objects are rescaled each time I change the symbols document. This is very annoying of course, as I had to resort to embedding the symbols to make sure I did not have to manually rescale after every change...

This is a regression from 1.9.0 where I only ran into this problem once, after manually changing the linked resource. This makes working with linked documents very unreliable, and I can not use the advantages it offers, like easily making changes to items and have it apply in the whole document, and it bloats the file size quite a lot too.

I will have to reconsider some of my working methods with this bug, which is quite nervewrecking. I hope this issue can be resolved??

  9. I had a very nasty crash yesterday while I tried to delete an asset category I had created but I did not need. The program froze and I had to force quit the app. After restarting the app ALL asset categories were deleted! This is a very nasty thing, especially if you use assets all the time. Assets seem buggy as whole atm, as things like creating asset categories and renaming them takes a lot of time. I hope you can adress this serious issue soon.

I use the latest app store version of Designer on an iMac 2011 with High Sierra installed.

and only appears after you adjust the zoom on the document

This is not what I am seeing here, regardless if I zoom in or not, I get the brush size indicator after I release the pencil from the screen after a stroke. So surely this must be a bug. And even if this would be intentional, why not put it in a less intrusive place? I am using the latest version of ios and the latest version of AD.
