    I can see the need for international users and users writing anything else than English. In a French text quotes look different; they’re called guillemets. In German the opening quotation mark is a low mark whereas in English a high mark is used. And on and on.
    As I wrote earlier, it’s a language dependent thing. I find a drop down box not useful, because the choice should be made based on the language of the text. It took Freehand (and Microsoft Word) a few iterations to offer smart quotes in a certain way, and Publisher is still in beta. I don’t know how high it’s on the developer’s list, but I doubt if it’ll make to the first official release.

    The preferred way of course would be to install the dictionaries in a separate folder outside of X:\Program Files\... Use the preference pane Tools to add this additional dictionary folder. Restart Affinity Publisher as advised.

    I placed a rather large PDF into an Affinity Publisher page. The PDF was created with Affinity Designer. After placing it I decided to use the original Designer document, and replaced the PDF with the original. The Resource Manager now tells me it's a TIF image. See:

    At first I thought Publisher turned the complex vector document into a bitmap for efficiency reasons, but zooming in excessively made it very clear that it still was a vector image. After cropping it, I tried to move the content around within the frame, but double-clicking the image opened a new tab with an Embedded Document. Apparently moving around an image in a frame is only possible when you first create the frame and then place the image inside it.
    To summarize: (1) there's something wrong with the replacing-an-image functionality, and (2) Cropping an image should -- in my very humble opinion -- result in the same as placing an image in a predrawn frame.

    No, this is not available in the current Beta. There's however plans to support global layers in an upcoming version (after Publisher's release).

    In playing around in recreating a template I currently use in InDesign, I noticed there's no option to set up Text Styles to align the text towards/away from the spine. This would be a hugely helpful for setting layout for large multi-page documents!

    Well, there is of course the statusbar that clearly shows something like "2,3 of 8", because I am working on the spread consisting of pages 2 and 3, and there are 8 pages in my publication.

    Thanks for the files! It turns out this is actually being caused by the ruler! It is not factoring in the width of that when fitting the page. I've logged it with development now.

    With a numbered list the same occurs. Just worse. The number (or a placeholder such as \#) doesn't appear in the blue box. Switching to Type: No List empties the edit box (which it should), and switching back to Type: 1,2,3,4... makes the text reappear but still wrong.
    The screenshot is of the Edit Text Style dialog, but the Paragraph panel shows the same.

    Hi Sean,
    Sure. The document is in the attachment. My screen has 1920x1080 pixels and my Windows zoom level is at 100%. Both are "recommended" settings. I do have a dual monitor setup (maybe that could be an issue, but I doubt it).

    I agree it can both ways, depending on what is regarded as a feature. Being very strict (and I'm not, really) 'All Caps' shouldn't be in a list of OpenType features, because it isn't an OpenType feature. But the Panel is titled 'Typography', and capitals are definitely a part of that.
    In the end capitals are important, and a bit of italic text never killed me.

    I can't really answer that for a PSD file, Tom. But I have noticed that Publisher (and I suspect the other two applications) have some fundamental differences in the way they treat placed/embedded files, handling pure image files differently from the way they handle non-image files.

    Add me to those voting for footnotes and endnotes, but with a strong stress on the later. Visit any university library and you'll find that endnotes replaced footnotes long ago, perhaps in the 1950s. In the era before computers, endnotes were far easier to typeset. In todays world, their appearance at the bottom of a page is seen as clutter by most readers. And being able to have both in the same document would be handy. Footnotes could be used at the bottom of a page to clarify ideas. Endnotes far away could be used to give references that most people don't read.
    I would, however, agree with those who'd like to see footnotes handled in a more powerful way. Untangling Tolkien, my day-by-day chronology of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was done in Framemaker, which allowed me create the equivalent of footnotes for references to the source in LOTR in a sidebar alongside the text to which it applies. That worked far better than bottom of the page footnotes or endnotes. I can't do that in ID.

    It would be great if there was a visual alert to images that have placed ppi below the document setup level. So - I've set my document at 300ppi (because that's the resolution the document will be output at) if an image is placed, and then scaled up so its placed ppi drops to below 300, a dot appears on it's frame like with overflowed text.
    I think this would solve a lot of the criticism of resource manager being a dialog box. The main reason I want to see that in Studio is to quickly know I'm not enlarging images beyond their resolution.
    By the way - it should be ppi not dpi - dpi refers to printed dots - while it's on your screen they're still pixels: pixels per inch.
