    You highlight Affinity's problem in programme development; Who are they creating this software for ? the less advanced users working on tablets with maybe just a few thousand files or serious users who expect to use professional software on capable systems with 10s of thousands of files.
    I wouldn't consider photo editing if I wasn't using a properly calibrated and colour managed screen.

    Another vote of support for rygar's request.

    The gradient tool is something I've used a lot in Photoshop/Lightroom/Capture One for 20 years and trying to change working habits to accommodate the Affinity interpretation of the tool is far from easy.

    Although there are out of gamut warnings in the Develop Persona these are not available in Photo Persona and I think they really need to be. Otherwise the only way to check is to keep switching back and forth to and from the Develop Persona. Unless I have missed something, which is entirely plausible.

    Have you considered FreeCAD?
    Also, Blender is now shipping with precise CAD drawing tools (the PDT add-on). The developer behind this addon is an experienced and trained draughtsman as well as a highly qualified mechanical engineer. He and others have been using Blender for serious CAD work.
    Their intention is to even include a 2d drawing module.

    You can very easily build custom tools panels using Adobe configurator which became available (free) from CS4 onwards. You can not only put on tools, but also buttons for actions and widgets etc. A great utility too few people know about.

    Well, I want to like AP and there's enough complaining on the internet these days, but I gotta agree with the original post.
    I'm a long time amateur, and used AP for maybe 80 hours since last spring. I've read the book and watched videos, and still I'm regularly frustrated with very basic tasks.
    Just to show the Experts what occasional users are struggling with:
    I want to draw a smiley then copy&paste it somewhere. 60 seconds?
    (upgrading to 1.9 on my 2nd machine, that doesn't count)

    Start AP, create new document, hit B, paint. Done?

    ... Nothing happens. Why? Once more, troubleshooting starts.
    1. I remember the tools cycle by default. 'B' selected the wrong tool.
       -> it really shouldn't cycle unless I hit it two or more times in a row?
    2. I select the brush from the toolbar
       Oops, that wasn't the paint brush. That was the identical brush icon with the tiny semi-transparent selection circle.
       -> some things in AP are really too subtle and difficult to see (for me).
          (and don't get me started on the shades of blue in the layer panel)
    3. Paint again... nothing happens
       Activate and Check the colors panel
       -> I think the color is so important, it should always be visible on paint. Maybe on the status or tool settings bar.
       Check the layers panel. Ah, there is no layer. Add a pixel layer.
       -> pixel layer on new doc should be added by default?
    4. I think it's time to turn on the assistant again. Where is it?
       Help... search 'Assistant'. Finds
       "Assistant Manager:  Controls rasterization behaviour".
       This doesn't sound like Clippy the newbie guide? Back to the view menu.
       -> I appreciate the documentation, it is very well written in it's own way.
          It just never helps me help with solving stupid problems.
       -> I would keep the Assistant on if it wasn't for the distracting popups.
          Would be nice if it 'popped up' in the status bar instead.
       -> I would LOVE it if the assistant just advised. Don't grab the steering wheel, don't add the layer, just say in the status bar
          "You cannot paint because there is no layer" or "because the selected layer is not a pixel layer"
    5. I can now paint but the line is too thin. Why are there no settings on top?
       Might be caused by the update. Check View > Studio... > .... nope.
       Nuclear option: "Reset Studio". Still no tool settings, why? Ah, it's "Show context toolbar"
       -> "Show tool settings" would be more intuitive. I'm not looking for "context", and this is not a toolbar, it has no tools in it?
    Finished. Took me ~1200 seconds (+5 minutes angry cigarette break) instead of the estimated 60.
    I could go on, but I think I made my point.
    It doesn't have to be either 'Powerful for Pros' or 'Intuitively usable for mildly skilled amateurs'.
    There are many things I like about AP, it's just too many things where you have to learn (and remember!!) little details that shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

    Update: challenge, quick! Where's the paint brush?

    As I work more with Affinity Photo, a couple of 'features' are starting to drive me up the wall and back to Photoshop.
    View;
    If I select view actual pixels, that's exactly what I want. I don't want the image jumping up to fill the window every time I change a dimension or crop a bit.
    It might be a suitable behaviour if I'd chosen  zoom to fit or zoom to width fitting, but it's hugely irritating when I'm try to work on specific actual pixels for web imagery.

    Stroke;
    Where's an option to stroke a selection ? Very useful in Photoshop, but missing in AP.

    Having to Export instead of save as;
    Just continually annoying.
    Gradient fill;
    Why can't I just fill a selection with a gradient ? what hoops need to be jumped through ? Unintuitive and unpredictable.

    Yes, I agree. I think Affinity has many nice features, but unfortunately marred by as many paper cuts, such as this one. These are the main reason why Photo is a complementary application for me, not the main image editor in my daily workflow.
    I remain hopeful, though. 🤞

    THIS! It is issue in itself shows that Serif cannot really be interested in reaching a mature and professional audience. Many workflows are crippled by bad usability in Photo but this issue is insane. It was reported for years and never fixed. It just cannot be a major issue to fix, but it is a huuuuge annoyance in any kind of workflow with web images etc.
    Further these usability issues are rarely fixed. With no user experience designer involved in the Affinity apps ... do not expect a fix either.

    Simple and Disappointed. Can't Stroke a selection like in Photoshop
    Can't do it in Photo or Designer... Hope Affinity will address this in the next upgrade.

    A good integrated DAM option is the next big feature that needs adding to the Affinity suite.
    It's tickling in with the new resource manager features in 1.9 and that is a good omen that this will come in time.

    For me it needs to support every format the suite currently supports, plus video and audio formats.
    It needs the ability to create virtual collections within it's database, also automatically generated (smart) collections based on user defined rules .

    Another feature that will take the suite up to another level is the ability to save history steps to side car files to make parametric changes (particularly to RAW photos) repeatable and changeable. That would then bring Affinity Photo's capabilities up to properly compete with Lightroom and Capture One. That would also allow virtual copies in the DAM.

    Sorry, but I can only back-up rygar here: A gradient tool that works like the one in Photoshop is in *dire* need here. As rygar rightfully says, it is just not possible to paint several (bitmap) gradients on a single layer. This may sound like a small thing, but it is as with many of the "small things" missing in Affinity Photo: The fact that they are missing makes many workflows *extremely* and unnecessarily long winded and tedious, which is also the reason why I still stick with Photoshop for the moment, even though I own the complete Affinity Software Suite.

    YES, EXACTLY.
    The point is that this type of gradient that behaves like brush (so you can apply one after another few times) is very versatile - I used it in many contexts - to mask, to create quick pseudo-LUTs, to make quick gradient on rasterized text and so on. It is simple and FAST way of achieving some results. Just pick a color from palette, one move on canvas and bang, done. Power is in simplicity. Just like regular brush that we use all the time.

    First of all, I must congratulate you because your software is (almost) perfect!
    But I would strongly, STRONGLY suggest to do something with gradient tool. This thing does not remember settings - each time I use it I have to go trough process of setting up of what I want. In addition, instead of just painting a gradient on active layer it creates an object (rectangular box that is completely useless) with a gradient, it behaves like a tool in vector program, not bitmap editor.
    It is basically not possible to quickly paint several gradients on a layer. When I try to paint second one, it immediately erases previous one.
    Also, in gradient tool there is gradient editor (quite complete and functional) in top context menu, but for some reason there is no such function on the dockers? It should be easy to move the same thing to color editing window/docker.

    PLEASE, make gradient tool behave like in Krita or Photoshop, ie like a kind of brush (after we paint gradient we should be able immediately create new one without any confirmations or clicking). Ability to 'dynamically modify gradient' is something that should be reserved to Designer, not bitmap editor. Also the direction in which we paint the gradient is counter intuitive (ie opposite of all other programs) - the gradient ends with chosen color instead of starting with it.

    It would be really useful to open the image at the exact size it's being used on the page to allow optimal sharpening for the output process.
    In addition is would be even better if it was possible to do this with all photos used in a publication in a batch process.
    Getting photos sharpened optimally makes a significance difference for photographic reproduction.
