coso got a reaction from k_au in 3 page spread
InDesign used to be like that, but it introduced the function around cs4 or cs5. It looks like nothing but it's super useful, for example for book covers (to adjust the width of the spine, which changes with paper weight etc.), to make flyers with automatic fold marks etc..
So I think it's a feature you should plan to add sooner or later if you want to compete with indesign

coso got a reaction from oO5Dynasty in What is affinity publisher? I’m confused!
Agree to everything, other than I'd use Publisher for anything that will be printed, even a single page. I'd use Photo to create imagery to be imported, and Designer if I need to make illustrations. But I think Publisher should replace almost every "print" material that we used to do in Designer.

I thought all Programs will go to 1.7 and Publisher starting off from that Version?

I've just received the preorder e-mail, and I'm excited for the launch. Presumably though, this special beta price is for the Serif store only? I'm torn, because I know Serif will get more money if I buy direct, and I'd love to support them, but my Photo and Designer licences are both from the Mac App Store, and I'd prefer to have everything in one place.
Will the Mac App Store be launching with the standard 20% discount mentioned in the e-mail? What about the free font pack that seems to be added to the order? Will App Store buyers be able to claim that?

I have been writing and publishing for a long time.   Publisher is not currently for sale, because it is in Beta, but when the first commercial version is ready,  I will be purchasing it on Day One -- I am sure only one of hundreds of thousands of others.    I may not think the new icon is as attractive as it might be, but it is so unimportant in the scheme of things.   What IS attractive is that for those of us who have been waiting for a long time, we are in the process of getting a splendid initial-version alternative to the Adobe prison.     In my humble opinion, the Publisher, Photo, and Designer icons can be whatever the developers decide.

I think we may have ruled it out of the "initial release" by which we mean the launch of 1.7.0. I don't think we have committed whether more than 2 page spreads will make it into the first version 1.x or a later release like 2 or 3, but I am sure that we will implement them.

coso got a reaction from Fixx in How do I set colours/transparency in a one bit bitmap?
This is a pretty basic fuctionality that IMO needs to be implemented. Think about doing a two pantone leaflet, with a bitmap image. You can fill the foreground/background of the bitmap accordingly and print it with two pantones. Doing it via blend modes is impossibile, because wrong color values will be created. Bitmaps are very common in contemporary print graphic design.

Packaging the document to include all assets and fonts etc ( like InDesign)  is a feature that would be 100% mandatory for me to be able to switch from InDesign to Affinity Publisher.  and oh boy do I ever want to switch to affinity Publisher!!!

I think Musiberti is right. The problem is that the Layer function seems to be part of the page, whereas it needs to be part of the document so changes can be made on multiple pages by single clicking  on the Layers panel. We need something like "Global" layers.

this is not ment as a comment but a BIG THANK YOU to affinity team for that christmas gift in the late summer. I am working with adobe for 20 years this year, I have quited they subscription in march out of the sudden as they shut down adobe muse, switched do you guys (and to quark xpress – which I unfortunatelly do not like that much) and was waiting for publisher to drop.
this tool is amazing. even in beta state. good job, much appreciated. THANK YOU.

Are footnotes and endnotes currently possible (besides manually creating them, of course)? I haven't found them so far.
If not, this is a feature that I think would be widely used. I suspect it may take some time to get right if it is not yet under development, so I would understand if it is not a day-1 feature.

coso reacted to Carles in Improvements to spot inks are needed (swatches, export)
Overall Publisher seems to have many features. But their workflow with spots inks is pretty weak or simply don't work. I know Affinity just released the first beta; indeed, this is just the time to request this.
Many proffessional works are done with spot inks (maybe a background hard to print in CMYK, maybe they need a rich orange/green/blue ink). Also the little works, due to be cheap using only two spot inks instead of full CMYK.
Things to be implemented or improved:
    - We need a more streamlined workflow with spot inks. Currently it's a pain. We don't have a way to see all current colours of the document (spot inks or any other color); we can only have the option to create a custom palette wich don't works with spot inks (it converts your spot inks to color space document colors -CMYK in my case-). Currently, the most easy way to see your document spot inks it's export to PDF and open your exported file with Acrobat Proffessional.
    - We need overprint control. This is a must.
    - Object styles don't export when you use spot inks.
    - Publisher considers spot inks as "unsupported features" when you export PDF. This converts all you vector works (external documents placed) with spot inks to images, even with PDFX 3 preset. Disabling "convert to image unsupported features" allows to export your linked vector files with spot inks.
    - Publisher don't recognize AI, EPS colours, spot inks or CMYK. Tested with Illustrator 8 files.
Things to be implemented in future updates:
    - Ink preview options will be very appreciated. Specially overprint and ink separations (just as Indesign and Illustrator).
Sorry for any misspell, i'm not a native english speaker. BTW there's some spanish bugs, i will report them when fully translated betas are released.

This is an absolute must-have feature.  three page spreads (and larger) are very common for me and I would absolutely need this feature in order to switch from InDesign.
Also with the ability to adjust the page size of each page on a spread (like InDesign) and output with fold/trim bleed marks etc.  I do a lot of tri-fold brochures and wide format print (as previously mentioned) and i have to be able to set files up this way.

    Jens,
As far as I can tell using 3 artboards side by side in AD results in 3 individual PDF pages when exported rather than the single page you'd need for a book jacket, unless there is a way to export all artboards as a single page which I'm not aware off.
Also, I think you have to assume that as APub gains traction that there will people using it to create publications who don't necessarily have or need to use AD. To me this is a fundamental requirment to make APub fully rounded publishing application despite the excellent integration between all the apps...
