Sorry, had to go out.
Out of curiosity, I used the vector ellipse where you said "where to cut" and set the Layer blend mode to Erase.

Angel Luis reacted to A_B_C in [Designer] Cut a vector based in the curve of another vector?
You could create a circle of the same size as your donut and nest the ellipse to that circle. Then make sure both the donut and the circle have the same position on the canvas, and send the donut to the background.
