Tim Kyarie reacted to walt.farrell in Affinity Designer Crashes when i try to type something in the Font selection menu (Windows 10)
The recommendation for now is to uninstall the Windows updates that have broken applications that use the Windows WPF functions. The bug is in Windows, from what I've read, not the Affinity applications, and ideally will be fixed by Microsoft.

Tim Kyarie reacted to NathanC in [FIXED] Recent Windows 10/11 crashing when when searching fonts, placing images, updating resources…
If the Affinity apps are crashing when typing into the Font selection box please uninstall the following updates dependant on your version of Windows:
    Windows 11: KB5017264, KB5017267, KB5017271, KB5017859, KB5018341, KB5018546, KB5018859, KB5020695, KB5020617
    Windows 10: KB5013887, KB5017262, KB5017266, KB5017858, KB5018329, KB5018543, KB5018544, KB5018545, KB5020613
Some users have also reported crashes/issues when placing images, updating resources, adding pages, amending table columns and converting colour profiles. If you're suddenly experiencing crashes when performing actions which worked previously it is also recommended that these updates be uninstalled.
If you're unsure on how to uninstall these updates, please follow the below:
Press the Windows Key + R and enter 'Control Panel' Go to 'Uninstall a program' Select 'View Installed updates' Find the associated KB number, right click and select 'Uninstall' Restart your PC On Windows 11 you may need to press the Windows Key and search for 'Uninstall Updates'. You will then be able to uninstall the relevant update.
This update can then be hidden to prevent it being installed with future updates by following the guide in the link below.

It does affect the bounds in some way. Attached is one of the examples where it affects the bounding box of a group. To replicate it, unskew an italic text by skewing it (or create a parallelogram and then skew it to be square) and you will see that it keeps its old bounding box, even though there isn't part of the object in that space. I hope this better explains it.

I think that a permanent reset bounding box option is essential for anyone using Affinity Designer. Based on my prior experience with Adobe Illustrator, a permanent reset bounding box is a valuable tool for an efficient workflow. It's convenient to have the option of a non-permanent reset bounding box for vector shapes that need it, but most of the time we NEED a permanent reset bounding box.

Begging your pardon, Mark, but quite often my purposes for resetting a bounding box is to permanently reorient the selection to its current state. I dare say you'll have the same argument  with decades of Illustrator users, because that program's Reset Bounding Box command is used all the time and it is only permanent; it can't be "restored" to the orientation in which the object was originally created (unless, of course, you reverse the transformation(s) performed and then Reset Bounding Box again).
The "extra space" bounds which Wickster illustrates is also a stumbling block, (and I don't mean in the context of live text).
Yes, I appreciate that Affinity is able to "remember" its untransformed orientation. But it's just as common to need the object to forget its original orientation, and thereafter treat its new orientation as normal.

This actually should be done  for all Affinity Apps. We need  collapsible panel UI. Totally support and appreciate this idea too.

At the moment the only way to detect if a frame is overflowing is it it has a small eye symbol next to the flow handle when the frame is selected. A locate options is a good idea though

    Ho worldmac1,
    Welcome to the forums.
Currently our Affinity apps don't have the options to print colour separations, you'll would need to export to PDF and then use an app like Adobe Acrobat. This feature has been requested and may be added in a future update.

Colour Separation is a feature thats been requested a few times in our Feature Requests section. It may be added in the future but we don't have a timescale to when.

Is the PDF open in another program such as a PDF viewer, another PDF editing program, etc. at the same time?
If you have the PDF open in Affinity Photo and then open it in something else, for example when seeing what it looks like in a PDF Viewer (or if the PDF was already open in something else before opening it in Affinity Photo), this will prevent Affinity Photo from being able to export it as this PDF and will give an error like what you're seeing.  In addition when opening the PDF in another program, the other program can sometimes lock the file for editing, but fail to release it correctly, meaning Affinity Photo isn't able to write to the file until you completely close the other program.

Not everything is an Affinity issue, Windows at the best of times is temperaMENTAL and with constant background updates being pushed on to the system, things can easily get messed up.
You should really save to Documents not to Desktop; one reason is file safety. If saving to Documents has the same issue you may have a corrupt user profile/account or permissions to test that theory, you can create a new user profile/account and log into it, then try opening and saving to that user profiles desktop.

I was wondering why not make a redistribution of the panels?
    1. if the panel transforms we always put it in the upper left corner, we would retrieve a space in the panels on the right so as to have other more open panels and do not open and close between the tabs.
    2. Add the methods of the document next to the file name.
    3. Make sure that even if I have the tool tab on 1 column, I can display the fill and trace color samples (now it works only from 2 columns onwards), I would recover space horizontally, since I have so much vertical space on the bar unused tools.
    4. I would appreciate the possibility of having collapsible panels like in Adobe (I would save space and I shouldn't always go to the menu to call up the panels)
Now it is only possible to combine the panels on the right and left so as to occupy the entire column on the right and left, at the expense of the visual space dedicated to the work tables.
As it is now the interface should work with a 4k monitor to get the visual benefits, I have a 27 "1920x1080 and it seems like I'm always looking for space to better see the artboards.
I hope the idea is appreciated ...

Are footnotes and endnotes currently possible (besides manually creating them, of course)? I haven't found them so far.
If not, this is a feature that I think would be widely used. I suspect it may take some time to get right if it is not yet under development, so I would understand if it is not a day-1 feature.

So more options for underline/strikethrou and/or  character background would be useful again.

Is it possible to offset the underline of text, change the stroke type too, maybe dotted, or dashed?

The interface for Text Decorations is looking like this.

    Confusing Dialog
You'd think adjusting the stroke weight would affect the weight of the underline - but this isn't the case - it adds a stroke around the text.

There is no way to adjust the stroke weight of the underline - that or I'm missing something.
