I'd like to suggest a number of improvements to the alignment and distribution options. I'm currently thinking about migrating from Inkscape (which doesn't work well on Mac) to Designer. These are the alignment and distribution options I've grown accustomed to:

Note the following features which I haven't been able to find in Designer:
Aligning elements below, upwards, rightwards or leftwards of a given element (the options with the yellow box the blue boxes are aligned to). This is sort of an "outward alignment", if that makes sense. Distribute the left boundary, centre, or right boundary of objects instead of being limited to equal distances between objects. More extensive font alignment options. This includes aligning to font baselines, distributing text based on baselines, and the likes. An excellent feature which I haven't found in any vector tool so far (I may not have been looking hard enough, though...) would be alignment and distribution of text objects based on the box starting at the base line and ending at the cap height. If I want to centre text in a rectangle vertically, this imaginary box is what I would want to have centred. Alignment and distribution of nodes on a path. Perhaps some of those features are already there and I simply haven't found them yet, but the remaining ones I think would be helpful tools.

Right, I should have just waited a few minutes and read the help file more. For future reference: Edit -> Preferences -> User Interface -> Show brush previews disables the feature.
    Cheers,

Read Bauke's post earlier in this thread. Shortly, Publisher hyphenates & justifies using algorithm that optimizes one line at the time in a paragraph. More advanced algorithms optimize whole paragraph at one go, resulting better typesetting.

A little more on the subject if you wish to dig deeper — Donald Knuth (of TeX fame in the typesetting world) & Michael Plass published an article in 1981 called Breaking Paragraphs into Lines. Here is the Abstract:

Yes, you can do this, although we could probably make it easier because the Geometry options have been tucked away. First off, you need to be able to 'Combine Curves' so add the Geometry options to the Toolbar via View > Customise Toolbar. Now create your individual frames, using Pen Tool, Shapes whatever, select them all and 'Combine Curves'.
The resulting polycurve can be converted to a Picture Frame via the Layer Menu and then populated as usual.

@Metin Seven, that doesn't seem to do what I want it to. Take the following screenshot, for example (the image itself doesn't include the border you see here):

Gimp's autocrop will collapse the image's borders towards the centre as long as there is no colour change, thus yielding the following result:

This is what I was referring to.

+1. Something like Gimp's Autocrop feature would be brilliant.

Christoph Daniel got a reaction from eljaco in How to create a multi-column master page ?
If I understood other topics in this forum correctly, master pages cannot hold text frames to be filled in the actual pages. You need to add a page based on the master page and add text frames to that concrete page.

As Fixx already mentioned, you will find more options through View -> Studio -> Text frame, including controls for the gutter. One of the tutorial videos also explains this quite nicely.
