Smee Again got a reaction from hanshab in Layer fill equivalent?
I thought I must be missing something. If a member of support thinks we have a "Fill" slider in the layer effects, then we must have a way to adjust fill. How could I test that? Hmm...
So, I tried something different in hopes of getting "fill" to work.
Opened an image. On that layer I clicked on fx and added a color overlay. Here's where the fun begins -- makes me think of the story about "The Emporer's New Clothes". All the fill slider does is become an alpha change for the whole image. So, I duplicated the original, and added a color overlay to the top copy of the image.
I picked an orange color for my color overlay. Now, I figured that maybe "Fill Opacity" might behave differently, and it definitely did but not for the better.
You see, once you have added a color overlay and chosen a blend mode (special blend mode or not) you can do anything you want with the "Fill Opacity" slider. It will have absolutely no effect on the color overlay effect. 0% fill opacity is exactly the same as 100% fill opacity. Oh, you can make changes, but you have to use the "Opacity" slider for the Color Overlay settings. All it does at that point is adjust the alpha of the top layer which is only a solid color layer (much like Layer>New Fill Layer).
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO "FILL" OPTION IN AFFINITY PHOTO! None. Nada. ZILCH!!! There is only opacity adjustment.
If I'm wrong, please prove it to me. I would love to see what I am missing.
If you have no intention of adding this functionality, tell us. JUST BE HONEST! Don't try to convince me that fill and opacity are the same thing, because they aren't.

The day time version was given that old time look. The old truck was added to the photo. Using Texture in the lighting control produced that grainy look.
With the night version I added a picture of the Milky Way (I took) (sky replacement) and I created the look of headlights for the truck....

I've been tinkering with Affinity Photo for awhile now (a 15+ year user of PS) for my astrophotography and when I saw the 1.9 release I had to try out the new stacking functionality.
This is a simple stack of 180s H-alpha frames of the Horsehead nebula stacked and post-processed in Affinity Photo:
More information here: https://www.astrobin.com/iz5cjv/
I'm very excited about this new release. I mentor local astroimagers at our astronomy club and having a full featured option like Affinity Photo at an accessible price is a real game changer.

So, image on my work-laptop was messed up. weird squares and sloooow as a snail on THC.
Turned off the new hardware acceleration and all is well again. Apparently the GPU isn't supported or something but the checkbox for H/A was on by default.
So, if you see unexpected weird stuff in 1.9 (while being sober) try turning the hardware acceleration off.

Nice job! Thanks Serif for the updates -- but I do have a question:
Is there any hope of getting a "fill slider" that isn't actually an opacity slider?
"Fill" works differently than "opacity" in the eight "special blend modes" ( Color Burn, Linear Burn, Color Dodge, Linear Dodge (Add), Vivid Light, Linear Light, Hard Mix, and Difference). Very important in color grading images, among other niceties.

You are correct. The fill on the fx panel affects the opacity of an object such as text. Yes it is useful but it is definitely not the same as the layer fill function in Photoshop.

Sorry, my reply was indeed a bit misleading/confusing. There's no equivalent to the Fill control in the Layers panel in Affinity Photo as you noticed.
-
Smee Again reacted to Xzenor in Layer fill equivalent?
not really no. Just a regular pixel layer in color dodge blend mode.
I never noticed the "Fill opacity" there though so I learned something new today but it doesn't seem to do anything else than the regular opacity slider. it guess it works differently when using layer effects?

Good find. So I was right that I didn't see a difference between those 2 sliders and there's no alternative..
Too bad..

Affinity is lacking an actual "fill" slider. It become painfully apparent if you try to use one of the 8 special blend modes. Then you can see a great difference between a "fill" slider and "opacity" slider.
They need to rename their "fill opacity" slider to a plain opacity slider because that is all it is -- an opacity slider.

Hey all.
The artists that worked with Photoshop before going to Affinity Photo will know. In Photoshop you can adjust the layer opacity but also the layer fill.
Is there an equivalent for the fill in Affinity Photo? Or a trick to achieve that same effect?
What I found that comes closest is the Blend Options but it's definitely not the same and doesn't work in every situation.

Welcome to the forums @Stych
In order for people to see the effect of your manipulations it might be better if you can give both the before and after photos so we can see the difference.

I am an aspiring drone photographer, the most I do really do with Affinity Photo is color/contrast correction.

This is my first proper edit with Affinity Photo I know it is a simple picture but i'm uploading it to show other people that it is that easy to use with a little help from the online tutorials. The photo was taken at Ryton pools country park just outside Coventry and looks like it could be anywhere in the world.

Smee Again reacted to diopside in Anyone else using Designer and/or Photo for cartography / mapmaking? (Example)
I'm curious if anyone else out there is using Affinity products for making maps? These days , probably >95% of cartographers make their maps almost entirely within GIS software, but I was always frustrated by the limited options and lack of precision for controlling stylistic elements on maps in those software suites (both QGIS and ArcGIS), so I figured why not outsource the styling to Affinity products
For those unfamiliar, mapmaking is not unlike standard graphic design. You have a document comprised of a bunch of different layers, some of which can be vector (like road lines, point data, etc.) and some of which can be raster (like elevation maps, aerial imagery, etc.). The only real difference is they are all encoded with spatial information. So what I started doing is using the GIS software just to compile and size (spatially aware trim/crop) all my different layers of geographic data, and then exporting a bunch of identically-sized layers that I then reassemble in AD / AP (i.e export a PDF of *just* the road lines, export another PDF of *just* the water body polygons, export a PNG of *just* the aerial imagery, etc.). As long as I maintain identical pixel dimensions for the exported raster layers, and identical aspect ratios for the vector layers, maintaining the appropriate map scale / size and reassembling the layers in AD/AP is trivial. Once I have all the data in AD/AP, I can take advantage of those graphic design features that GIS software could never hope to do, like advanced masking and layer blending modes, brush-based editing, pixel-perfect label placement (HUGE), etc. Another great thing is this method gives you ultimate control over design of the map frame and you're not stuck using the preset layouts and scalebars that are baked into GIS software suites.
The included example is a map I made for my mother last Christmas of the area where her ancestors settled 150ish years ago. Its sort of like a modern take on the classic USGS topo map styles from the 50's-80's.
(there are two typos I'm aware of, 'prairie' is misspelled in both instances, and 'convenience' is written as 'convenient' in the legend... if you see anymore, let me know!)
cheers

Yes.
Should have read elipse --- guess I was "c"ing things.
Well, not a green planet but rather a green halo that comes from a bit of glass misalignment in a lens I used or the adapter (a lens from back in my film days adapted to my Canon). You'll also notice it is rather poorly focused. The image lacks the sharp detail that should be there when shooting with a 300mm zoom.

Every project is a learning experience. The glow around the moon is an eclipse with gaussian blur (max) and then I added a vignette (and some masking to avoid it showing where I didn't want it).
I think this helped a bit making the glow look a bit more realistic.

Hello everybody,
It's for a while I didn't write here about our new series of textures.
We are an architecture group, creating PBR Textures and sharing them around the world. We have more than 800+ textures in our archive.
You can download them free and you can use them on your projects. You don't need to registrate, click ad walls etc. :)
Here some rendered textures of our new wood packages. You can download them clicking Wood Floor Textures
Some textures not published yet. But all of them scheduled for free usage...
PS for moderators: If there is some resources section for free textures, please add this post on there. ;Thanks in advance.
