Smee Again reacted to William Overington in Artwork for greetings cards
I have now completed the artwork and paced an order for the card.
I had already done the watercolour part.
In the event I resolved the problem by going to the Colour tab at the right and finding out the rgb values for each colour in turn and writing them down onto paper with a pen and then using those rgb values in the colour palette at the left and got the desired result that way.
Having got the artwork right I produced a jpg file, had a look at it in Paint. then uploaded it to the Papier website, checked it and the greetings inside the card, which are in fact the English localization, together with a short writeup of what it is about. I had set up the greeting a few days ago.
I managed to get it all in there, using the Garamond typeface, the poem, centred, in 14 point and the description, centred, in 12 point, including my name and March 2021 so that the card has a timestamp.
Here is the finished artwork, 1571 pixels by 2171 pixels, which is 5 inches by 7 inches with a bleed area of width 3 millimetres at each edge.
I have been advised that the colours will appear darker when printed onto card.

Smee Again reacted to Steve_1010 in Strange colouring showing up in printed version.
Hi Everyone,
I printed a book on KDP. On the back cover of the book some of the text and logos have a strange coloring over them.
I've included an example in the attachment. If you look carefully at the attachment you'll see a logo. But, if you look more carefully, the logo is in a square that is a slightly different red. (My apologies, it doesn't show up well on the camera) Almost as if a small film of yellowish colour was overlayed. If you look even closer, you can see the letters, 'SMAR' also have this square around them.
This slight discolouration is happening on the logo and some of the text on the back cover but in Publisher everything looks great.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thank you so much....

I only export the keepers myself. However, if that is the case, PSP has an excellent macro feature that would allow you to batch export. If space isn't a problem that is the way to go. If space is a problem, you can batch export to PSD / batch delete PSP.

Smee Again reacted to lepr in Layer opacity vs. fill
It works out equal on my machine, so I wonder if you are accidentally doing something different.
Having said that, Affinity currently has a bug in its Vivid Light blending, so that could be giving you unexpected results.
Intuition, I suppose.

Your result is fine (it would have been identical to mine if you had specified a slightly different blend colour, of course), but I think you've missed the point of my intermediate blending with neutral colour; it was to provide a way for users coming from Photoshop to specify a "fill percentage".

I never thought I'd stir up such a lively conversation when I started this thread ...
But just to clarify my point, there is definitely a difference between opacity and fill, especially with the blend mode "vivid light" which I often use for glowing effects.
Here are two examples with four colors (yellow, magenta, cyan and black) on a colorful background and one with a neutral grey layer with a soft white line.
Whereas I get vivid colors and an oversaturated look with fill, using opacity makes it somehow dull looking. NOT the same.
Photoshop:
Here is the same file opened in Affinity Photo. Due to the missing fill functionality both sides look the same:
Imho, there's no way to replicate that effect in AP.

I've been playing with those, too, and those are mostly easier to mimic with Affinity's blend ranges. It's the Hard Mix in particular where PS's math acts unexpectedly "strange" as the Fill blend somehow smooths those hard edges when being applied using low % values.
After posting, I still couldn't get sleep last night so I quickly tried something else using a fill layer as demonstrated in those aforelinked videos in this thread.
Here's the unprocessed random "old man" image from Pexels:
I wanted to have more depth in the shadows, so in PS I tried a green fill layer color burn @ fill 10 %:
In APh, by simply trying to achieve the same result visually, I ended up with this:
The nodes are at 10%, 60% and 90% positions, so there seems to be some correlation to the PS Fill value of 10%.
That said, however, apparently it's not as simple as that.
When I set PS Color Burn fill to the over-the-top but "arithmetically balanced" value of 50%, I get this:
I haven't found a way to reproduce this exact appearance in APh via Blend Ranges.
So APh Blend Ranges will work (around) in some scenarios but fail in others.

Sort of, the shadow, text effects & watermarks he demonstrates at the beginning can be achieved with the current fill box in the affinity fx panel, it is when you move towards the end of the demo and the blend modes are shown that the problems arise in Affinity, some effects can be emulated with a fair bit of faffing around, others can not. It is for the use cases that can not be emulated that the fill slider is needed.

Comparing tanks and daisies again. Would you like to see "layer fill" as compared to "layer opacity"? Don't skip ahead, but do watch the videos.
This is not about placing shapes, adding shadows, and making the shape disappear while keeping the shadow.
Open an image - any image.
Add a "New Fill Layer" (MENU: Layer/New Fill Layer). You do this to "color grade" an image. (other ways, but this is the simplest).
Change the New Fill Layer's blend mode to one of the 8 special blend modes. Now, look at how awful it appears. This is why you need "layer fill" and not just "layer opacity".
Watch these two short videos:
The Easiest Way to Get Rich Skin Tones in Photoshop
The Hard Mix Blend Mode in Photoshop
This is the "Layer Fill" this thread is about, not about drawing shapes and making them disappear.
Just how many photos have you seen in galleries that have shapes like stars, clouds, or squares drawn over the subject? We're not talking about drawn shapes, but color grading. A BIG TOOL is missing here that would make this software so much more valuable to persons like me.

Ok. For you guys and / or gals thinking that fill and opacity are the same thing, or who think that a similar result can be achieved by using blendif, I do need to add a bit of clarity to our discussion.
Layer fill and layer opacity behave the same in most blend modes. There are, however, 8 blend modes where these do NOT behave the same. Those are:
Color Burn Linear Burn Color Dodge Linear Dodge (Add) Vivid Light Linear Light Hard Mix Difference. You will also find that "linear light" (in certain circumstances) likewise works better with layer fill than with opacity as shown in the video in this post above.

One click and adjust a slider to the correct level for your image . . . or one hour of trying to match the results by playing with blendif, and then the resulting frustration of little or no success.
I know first hand because I had an image that opacity just would not give me the desired results and I had this brainstorm 6 months ago to try blendif to get there. It don't work

We don't all have the time to explore the equations needed, perhaps you could share your knowledge for users that need this functionality.
It's all very well saying it can be done, perhaps a tutorial in how to achieve a high quality colour grade using hard mix blend mode would be appreciated. There are other use cases in this thread, maybe a full and clear explanation how to achieve them would be useful.
As for dark halos in masking 8bit images...never had that problem, never work in such a low bitrate.

The latest video in this post uses the fill opacity on a shape with a shadow. He makes the shape disappear and the shadow remain.
Of course, we all know a battle ready M1 Abrams tank is exactly the same thing as a daisy growing in a field.
By getting the nomenclature wrong on the FX panels, it causes a lot of confusion as to exactly what "layer fill" actually is.

My mindset is firmly with Affinity and has been for a number of years. My transition was complete a long time ago, I did start ‘afresh’ but as a professional photographer that only sells limited editions through high end galleries I know what I need.
It is not needed for all images but some definitely benefit from higher end editing that is not currently possible in Affinity. I am not kicking up a fuss and the team know that I fully support them.

If you are familiar with some of the uses then you know they are missing in Affinity 😀

Finally, all the albino brain chiggers are gone (we had about 14" - 18" of that white junk fall here in southeast Arkansas last week) and it's safe to go outside again. The only positive about the whole mess was I got to stand in the doorway and watch the birds and squirrels consuming what we put out for them. Since I won't venture out far in that stuff, the "goodies" were near my front door. Got some interesting images processed in Affinity Photo.
