Jowday got a reaction from CLC in Free Transform, Perspective & Warp Tools
LOL. So you believe it is just about the order of the bricks?
Seriously, apologists. Let Serif do the explaining - you guys always forget (or do not understand) business priorities and (long term) strategy. FX how to keep you in the fold for years.

Jowday reacted to Mithferion in Warp/distort tool in Designer
My guess is:
Working on Publisher for the iPad is slowing some things down (like when Matt worked on Designer for the iPad) The internal Roadmap that dictates the order of the Features and development of the Core is still way behind getting to this point And talking about the last part, yes, there seems to be technical requirements yet to meet in order for this feature to be developed. As an IT person, that is a warning for me about the inner workings of the program.
Best regards!

Thecnical decisions, most likeley, that goes like this: First, we need to Develop X-thing, then, Y-thing, and finally, Z-thing. Some dependencies on things to be done.
Best regards!

Jowday reacted to MikeW in IDML export
As mentioned above, the professional solution is to use ID to begin with. There is no way around that fact even if Serif implements .idml export. You would/should still open an .idml export in ID and ensure to document is correct (it won't be ever a 100%, 1:1 import).
The only layout application I am aware of that can import & export .indd or .idml is Viva Designer. But even with it, the resulting files ought to be opened in ID to ensure they are a 1:1 representation for anything but a simple job.

Jowday reacted to folivio in Contour tool
Contour and Blend are very different tools. Contour adds additional objects based on a single or group of objects. Blend morphs from one object, or group of objects to another.
In the screen capture below you can see the various settings from CorelDraw 2020. This would be the target for Affinity if they want to implement robust, productive Contour and Blend tools.

Jowday reacted to Turtle in Recently Used Brushes - 3 Requests
3 things that would save me a lot of time would be:
1. A "recently used brushes" panel.
2. When I select a brush and then adjust its size, the brush I'm using is no longer highlighted in the brushes panel. Sometimes I forget which brush I'm using, so keeping the brush highlighted would be very helpful.
3. Organization options in the brushes panel. When duplicating a brush, I would love to have all of the duplicates located directly below the original brush but slightly indented.

Greetings team. Should we expect to see any further improvements (feature wise) done to the contour tool like users had requested previously in the Beta threads? Any more functionality coming to it?

Jowday reacted to ThirtyFiveThousand in Just bought AD, a few comments
Scrolling through layers can be a massive pain in bigger projects. Organizing things into Layers and Groups helps, but only so much. One object heavy layer can send you back to Slot Machine Simulator territory. There needs to be a “Expand/Contract All Layers” button that allows you to take full advantage of all your careful Layer organization by letting you put all your ‘junk’ back in their respective ‘junk drawers’ so that scrolling can be kept within the limits of ones sanity.

Jowday got a reaction from deeds in Keyboard Shortcut to Convert Node Type
There is not - I also don't understand why clicking the node with alt pressed doesn't just toggle the node type.
CorelDRAW has keyboard shortcuts for toggling nodes into the desired (specific) node type and it is exactly what I need. One key-press and I get exactly what I want. It shows understanding of how people work and what they actually need.

Jowday reacted to b_mer in How to tell which brush was used
This might be a silly question, but is there a way to find out which brush was used for a particular line? Just selecting the curve's layer doesn't seem to cause the brush that was used to be automatically selected in the brush panel and with both "the box set" and "Daub Essentials" I've already got quite a few brushes and it's hard to remember which was used where.

If at all possible save your souls with a one stop shop solution - all time wasted on workarounds, using several apps and tricks steals tons of time (and joy) that is deducted from creative time and created output. The worst business case I have seen, almost.
For 5 years you got next to nothing (vector) - so why would version 2.0 bring you a miracle - or a proper update. Look at the contour in 1.9 it is just a POC (Proof of concept) gone too far offering no creative tricks. Just more manual work and workarounds ad libitum.
Many years ago I watched a commercial for the Commodore Amiga (I wanted badly): "Dreaming is free. Stop dreaming." It actually toggled a switch in my head, I asked my employer to give me any extra work he could think of for a long period of time. He did. I worked hard, finally could purchase one and enjoyed that wonderful computer and grew with its creative software. Purchased a PC a few years later as well and ran programs on Windows 3 and 3.1 that had features you are still dreaming about and begging for. Almost 25 to 30 years later!
In a weak moment I liberated myself again from dreaming recently. Saving money is good. Wasting precious time in a short life is ... disastrous.

Lack of basic tools for an extended period undermines the faith of many who bought in to support Affinity Designer. It was my hope that by purchasing Affinity Designer I was helping contribute to a worthy option to AI. I've had to hold back on running more current MAC OS, because my aging copy of CS6 Illustrator still has many basic tools AD does not. Not to mention the time invested in getting up to speed on software that seems lacking. Then there are the hassles of working on a machine with outdated OS and unsupported security issues. If the future bares no fruit in the way of the missing basic tools many users may choose a different set of software & hardware solutions. An old 2007 Mac Pro cheese grater running 10.6, and a late 2012 mini running 10.12 has been quaint, but how long? I would happily purchase a fully equipped version of Affinity Designer 2.0 in the NEAR future. This would allow me to update my OS and let go of AI.

Jowday reacted to Alexmwalker in Expand Stroke For Other (Paid for) Brushes
Well, from where I'm sitting, Jowday seems to have a good handle on what he's talking about. I happily bought the tool and was quite enthusiastic about the prospects. It's not a huge risk at that price. When I came to this thread looking for answers I assumed my issues with exporting SVG were my own lack of familiarity with the tool. Turns out it wasn't that.
I can see that people who simply like to draw with vector tools might get excellent results from AD. Those who really depend on getting high quality, thoughtfully constructed SVG files to use in web browsers and apps might generate more problems than they need.
Cheers,

CorelDRAW. They threw it at me. But possibly more discounted where I currently am than world wide. And because who I am.
I have two setups; my business machines with Adobe CC - Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and CorelDRAW as well besides a whole bunch of other programs.
I tried to keep the cost on my private computer down - I spent a fortune on licenses for photography and RAW development apps (also running Photoshop on private computer) besides cameras and equipment of course. The vector work I make on my private computer doesn't justify an Illustrator class program. Or so I thought. It was a delight to draw with a program that had a new approach to the pen tool (Designer) but oh boy the rest. The missing features. The stray nodes. The boolean errors. The usability. And the waiting. I honestly believed Serif had taken a few steps up the ladder. Nope.
I also have Gravit Designer. But same issues. Few features. So I purchased CorelDRAW as an economic compromise - and in a weak moment. I didn't use it much the last decade but I have had just as much fun using it. And a creative rush. Habit and muscle memory protested the first days then I just created and created.
So whatever they charge you, pay. It is an investment and you are out of the Serif cell with constant limitations...walls, ceiling. The moment you have all the tools available in programs since the 90's you can play and create without wasting days or hours on manual work. Or not doing something. The hype is indeed over.

Jowday reacted to Daniel Kuhlmann in Include current eci.org color profiles
It would be great to have the current eci.org color profiles pre-installed with Publisher. Especially the eciCMYK (FOGRA 53): http://www.eci.org/en/colourstandards/workingcolorspaces
As a printer, we are often dealing with non-technical customers who are not able to install color profiles without further assistance. And for all tech-savvy users it would be convenient to have them available.

Jowday got a reaction from AndyQ in Typographic quotes - settings
I did - just today - used Publisher latest beta to give it a test run on a commercial piece of work. A really simple one. One I could complete in a cheap word processor. with a few creative tricks Well, it wasn't fun. I discovered this problem too with a Danish keyboard. And the total lack of features. But a hole lot UI element and panels. I didn't use Publisher much before this little trial. 10 minutes and I had discovered several jawdropping issues.
The solution was simple. I returned to InDesign 2021 and finished the job.
There is no user experience designer in Serif. I am also beginning to think this small company is working isolated in their bunker and does not have a commercial network. Or professional customers of any significant size. There are so many of these shortcomings in the Affinity line that reminds me more of an open source project than a commercial product. And they stick to bad decisions for years and years.
You just don't make so many - SO MANY mistakes - in five years without a major root cause. And I am afraid there is no vaccine against it on its way.

Thanks for your honest answer @walt.farrell.
Well, I included a screenshot from 2 decades old InDesign 2 showing what I'd love Affinity was able to offer. Not just Publisher, but also Designer and Photo, since you can set text in both and it's annoying and complicated to prepare texts outside of an app that simply does have text tool, Text Studio panels and stuff... I thought it's obvious I'd like exactly the same option, no automatic feature. I'd like to be in control of that feature. No feelings hurt, I was just interested if there are any plans to implement such an option and specifically started my message by "Hi Serif" greeting, hoping I'd get an answer from the staff.
I started with Photoshop version 2.5 (didn't even have layers support back then), used Page Maker, later QuarkXPress (still imo one of the best tools ever) and Illustrator since version 3. Then, when Adobe killed PageMaker, InDesign came to the town. I can't forget how version 2.0 had a huge error that doubled file size on each save. Yes, the world was way slower back then, we didn't need to rush that much and we patiently waited till Adobe released a pach that fixed this, it took over 6 months, but hey, all we had to was use workarounds and do Save As instead, incrementing digit at the end of the filename (sounds familiar right?). Nice times. Of course, since many people send me their data as CDR, I have to fire up CanadianJoke (TM) once a while and cry and whine and pull my hair out way more than with Affinity. That software is almost as old as Illustrator (talking CorelDraw! in case you missed the joke .
I really like Affinity, very much. Alywas until I attempt to do any reasonable job with it. For causual photo editing, Photo is good. Loving frequency separation ie, and some nice live filters. For causual vector drawing, Designer is ok. For a professional use (and that's how it's marketed by Serif) it's sadly not that ok, imho. Anyway, I bought both Photo and Designer for Mac and PC and sometimes even use it, when I got spare time (not that often) and until both are grown up enough, I will have to pay my monthly rent to Adobe hoping that one day, maybe... However, I probably won't buy Publisher until I see here, on the forums, that people don't complain how Publisher breaks their basic ux and workflow. I've learnt my lesson.
Your suggestion about Publisher's personas is very optimistic and I hope you're going to get what you need for your job to be done
Cheers,
CLC

You probably don’t understand @walt.farrell - I’m never asking a question without “playing with the software” as you describe it, for hours first. I am not a redditor who goes to the forums to ask questions if he’s lazy to find out - I just refuse to use beta products marked not ready for production (Designer/Photo customer betas) but have spent hours attepting to work with Publisher beta to find out if it´s a possible replacement for InDesign. Not impressed so far - I feel it’s actually in early pre-alpha stage. Even automatic typographic settings are wrong here... with font size 10 pt, software should default to 12 pt line height (but Auto settings defaults to the very 10 pt, thus not leaving enough space for accented characters. Another step user has to do every time, over and over...)
My question isn’t Publisher-specific, the same goes with Designer and Photo - both apps can and will be used to setup multi-language documents and should include such options, no matter if you think some other app should do the job. It’s up to an user to decide what product suits them to achieve their goal. I know, to this day, several designers who use Photoshop - yes, Photoshop - to design and complete hundred pages long catalogs, because they are visually-oriented people and dislike QuarkXPress, InDesign, or Scribus’ workflow. It’s their decision and we are not here to tell them they are doing it wrong, because there is another app they should work with.
Also - I want more user control and less automatic behavior from Affinity. Nearly everytime any software does such automatic changes by itself, without my interaction, I’m pulling my hair off. I believe it’s just wrong.
In this specific case, there are also many languages that are similar to each other, use very same accented characters that would suggest it’s the same language, but they use very, very different typographic conventions (curly quotes, different punctuation, different metrics and even keening values for some kerning pairs ie). Even google translate often fails to recognise them from each other - Affinity won’t ever be smarter there, no matter what you might want it to be... Such options like this should always be under users control, never automagic.
Setting up a brochure (thus need for multiple quote settings) on different (and in some cases even the same) pages in 6, 10 or 12 languages within one document isn’t an uncommon scenario - quite contrary - think of user manuals, and should deffinitely be addressed by a professional layout application.
Let me ask you a personal question, Walt - are you a professional working in printing industry, or a hobbyist?
Disclaimer: typing this on my phone, I apologise for probable typos.

Again. Lack of usability - the major issue in Photo.
The feature request would be to harmonize the workflow and user choices... and thus perhaps even the source code and architecture.
