Jowday reacted to Deadbyxmas in Affinity illustrations and experiments
Murattanhu and Alain: thank you very much for checking it out - really appreciated.
In the meantime I was really honoured when Affinity asked me to do an interview for the Affinity Spotlight page - it was published last week - so if anyone here is interested in knowing where I come from, what I do and how I do it, you can check it out here:
https://affinityspotlight.com/article/vector-illustrator-robert-nazeby-herzig-storytelling-is-the-thing-i-really-love/
And here - a more recent piece. BTW, I will be combining Photo and Designer over the next few weeks for a project - so will try to share that as well, as I go along.

Jowday got a reaction from segts in Josephine Baker Plush Design : Designer
Awesome! I really understand you. Getting your work in a physical form is almost always a special pleasure. I never made patterns or textures. Then I met this woman who makes them for a living and I suddenly saw patterns everywhere in life. Fascinating.
Share a photo with us when it arrives.

Jowday got a reaction from jmwellborn in Promotion of Upsplash (sic)
Do you really believe in marketing? Is a Serif owned marketing oriented site a credible source? The girl who made the new splash screen for Designer works in... Illustrator fx. I love her creations. But in real life she works in Adobe Illustrator for a living. And Elena works in Adobe Photoshop CC:
https://www.photocrowd.com/blog/86-interview-elena-paraskeva/
Same woman in august 2018 interviewed in an article about photography - then she was using Photoshop. And she always shoots RAW. If she does that I refuse to believe she would pick an inferior RAW converter for a Nikon D810 full frame camera. I believe she is still an Adobe CC customer.

Rest assured that pro/semi pro photographers use professional software. Not AP. This software is targeting another segment of users with smaller budgets. But that is beside your main (valid) point.

Jowday reacted to Patrick Connor in Bug in pen tool in 1.7.0 release version
Bumping has no effect on the response time. We don't reply from the top of the forum, we have tickets created by the initial post and review the oldest threads first.
Thanks for the initial post and recipe, it will be responded to when time allows, sorry for the delay.

@squirrelfire I am running into the same problem as you are, hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Jowday reacted to AndreZA in Contour Function
Affinity needs way too many steps for this function. I like the CorelDraw version. You can tell the function how many steps, how far apart and either inwards or outwards, all in one step. Okay you can't get the funky dotted line this way but if you need it you can follow basically the same steps as AD. And text remains editable and contours update as you edit text.

Jowday got a reaction from Mr Hounddd in Workarounds for Distortion, Warp, or Perspective distort?
It is not "high expectations". At. All. Let me repeat: We are requesting missing basic vector editor features in a commercial "professional" program.
Of course I am on the Adobe subscription plan. How the Hell would I be able to work and deliver only using Designer?
The point could be - just could be - what would it take to move many Adobe or Corel users from that kind of expense and feature overkill to fx Affinity Designer. Perhaps something like a few features that you would expect in any professional vector design program. Photo is surprisingly feature packed. Designer is surprisingly ... not.
So, when Serifs marketing is allowed to claim that Designer is "The Best Graphic Design Software Available" - they have to deliver more and in an acceptable time frame.

Jowday reacted to Nikola Kovac in Preferences window UI is frustratingly designed
There it goes, my inspiration that is, out of the window, and I lost it trying to change who knows what shortcut key... again.
As a professional in video, animation, 3d and audio I have used many many applications over the years, and find Affinity package a real refreshing leap forward. However, I must admit that the preferences window across all three Affinity apps (Photo, Designer and Publisher) is one of the most useless I have ever encountered. I am not afraid to switch and learn applications and am ready to customize the new ones I learn to my own best practices, and the preferences window is my friend or it should be, but Affinity's is not at all. Please let me try to explain what I find is wrong with and suggest some changes which I did not think a lot about, but seem much simpler to use. Let's start:
1. The preferences window uses a unique visual paradigm, completely different from any other dialogue I have encountered in the rest of the application. It has a header with Back/forward buttons, "home" button (with an odd icon and a drop-down menu) and search bar. No other panel, toolbar, manager, assistant or any other window in Affinity uses this paradigm or at least my humble knowledge of the app does not bring any into the mind. I doubt that this is good. For instance having tabs, like some other windows would do the trick no need for back/forward buttons, no need for home button, no need for drop-down menu, just 7 simple instantly accessable tabs.
2. search bar is a sneaky red herring! It is in fact dangerously useless! I'd like to change a shortcut for brush size in pixel persona? typing any of these terms does not help me to find where to do it. It seems that this search bar is good for searching only a couple of dozen words which does not make any sense at all, either you make every single preference item that can be change searchable or get rid of the search bar because the way it is now is frustratingly useless.
3. I will not go in depth on my thoughts about "General", "Color", "Performance", "User Interface" and "Tools" pages as I do see some benefit of "bite sized" preferences pages even if some items on them seem to belong to another page, and the number of these pages could actually be decreased. (for instance half of the "Tools" preferences could easily belong to "User Interface" tab)
4. Checkboxes, since they have really powerful results would benefit from tooltip help with a more verbose description of what they do.
5. "Miscellaneous" could easily be renamed to "factory resets" or something on that line, as that is what it does.
6. And now I come to my nemesis, the "Keyboard Shortcuts" page. Where to start?!
a) there is a search bar on the upper right, that is as we said a sneaky trap, and a red herring. It does not help us here, and will take us "home" probably finding nothing of interest.
b) we need to use these two fiddly drop-downs. The first one could easily be replaced with beautiful Draw, Pixel and Export icons cutting the number of actions for picking persona to edit to only one click (or even better none.. read on). The second one is really unintuitive as its items partially overlap in different personas. It took me a while to get the idea that this second one is contextual to the first one (as the list changes "behind the curtain")... I got it only after learning my way a bit around the app so I recognised that some items belong to some personas.
c) a quick overview of other buttons and check boxes in this upper region of Keyboard Shortcuts page;
"Apply to all" -what? to all what? I had to dig through the manual to see what it does, and all it would take to fix it is to call it "apply shortcut changes to all personas" without this information there is no way to know that there actually are some connections possible between personas. As if the for instance, brush size in pixel and draw persona must be separate.
"Ignore Modifier—Lets you create shortcuts using a single letter designation instead of using keyboard modifiers." says the manual, and I still do not get it. Does it allow me to pres only the letter in application without modifier keys and get what I want? No, as Ctrl+S is stil "save" and "Ctrl+Shift+S" is stil Save as. Does it filter out the input of Modifier keys while assigning new shortcuts? No. So what does it do? Maybe a better explanation in manual would help, and a more verbose checkbox title or tooltip.
"Load/Save" what? it loads and saves what? a file obviously, but what does that file contain? All shortcuts, or only those in focus? Maybe "Load Shortcut configuration" or something on that line would be better. to be continued...

Jowday reacted to GT70 in Workarounds for Distortion, Warp, or Perspective distort?
My friend, there are some features that must already exist in version 0.1. I wrote it above: some things, such as the deformation of objects, ARE NOT options or features to be implemented in the future to satisfy the whims of users but of TOOLS THAT MUST BE EXISTED already in the very first versions. All vector graphics software provides for distortion of text and graphics. Illustrator, Corel Draw, Inkscape, Xara...now I can't think of any more but everyone has this tool. Affinity can create all the software they want but the clear thing here right now is that there are a lot of people asking for this feature and Affinity pretends to be deaf. Now tell me why I should buy more of their Affinity software if they don't meet some of the essentials. And then, in Affinity's projects, is Designer for iPad part of the 3 things that need to work or was it created to take more money from users? I'm very angry that a company that takes my money doesn't listen to me about the things I need as a designer. I repeat, all this is absurd...

Jowday reacted to thomaso in Master Page confusion
Don't you agree there are oddities in correct master page setting and assigning with facing pages? I assume master page as single, not-facing, is one of them. In my experience I am allowed to create one but it seems to still hang on beeing a half of a couple. For instance the margin settings of such a single master page prefer the terms inside and outside instead left and right. And so a confusion can start.
Also it seems if I change the start page from initially left to right then the pages which have the master assigned get confused and don't get full information and keep their margins at the former position while they show the master content of the correct page.
On a single master page you have sort of a choice to define margins to left and right ...
... and – for the same single master – sometimes also between inside and outside. Watch out the wrong "left" margin side in the page view.
If you use such a single master page in your document then it will confuse margins of even "normal" neighbours:

Thank you, I did not know Janoschs Traumstunde before. Indeed a nice line. I wanted to draw something that referred to the old illustrations (contours) and light it a little with color spots. I love to draw by hand, but the curves allow you to scale without losing quality.

@Justyna You have the mission critical tools: fantasy and creativity. Superb illustration.
The rat in a city made me think of Janoschs Traumstunde. Ever watched that? You would love it

Thanks Chris, fingers crossed!
If you look at work by Cole Thompson he lives by the Burn and Dodge tools and in particular how you can target just Highlights, Middle Tones or Shadows. AP would just not be an option for him with the current functionality.
Cheers

Jowday reacted to Al S in Easy templates for simple trifold brochures
I agree with KitKat1947 here:
We can have 1 million people create a trifold template or the folks at Affinity can do it for the 1 million and add it to an already extensive list that they have for page and document setups! I mean even MS Publisher has a trifold option. If you want to compete with your competitors or surpass them, then add this stuff... However I did find this on the web. Hopefully someone can tell me if it will work please? Credit to https://www.orbprint.co.uk/template/a4t.pdf for the template

Jowday reacted to - S - in 1.7.0 Designer Pen Tool Unusable for Drawing
I think you're possibly misunderstanding the OP. I'm on Windows and I noticed the same change as the OP. Perhaps you're thinking about the handle nodes rather than the main node?
In 1.6, if you go back into a shape you created with the pen tool, with the pen tool still active if you click and drag a node it will re-draw the curve.
In 1.7, if you go back into a shape you created with the pen tool, with the pen tool still active if you click and drag a node it creates a new curve, rather than modifying the current one.
So now in 1.7, you have to select the node first, then click and drag to redraw the curve. For one node that may be fine, but if you're doing lots, the old way was quicker. I've seen a few people use the OP's technique; instead of clicking and dragging as they go, they plot the main points with sharp nodes to get the rough shape, then go back and click and drag to refine the nodes afterwards. So now, instead of just clicking and dragging the nodes, they have to CTRL + click each node first to select the node, before they can click and drag.

Agree that the inconsistency between Mesh nodes and Pen nodes is very irritating!

Jowday reacted to Dazmondo77 in BLEND TOOL!
Yes please
I don't use this feature too much, but found I needed it to produce a swirly pattern for some invites recently (see pic):
I know everyone wants to move over completely to Affinity but it's not gonna happen for a while, maybe well into version 2.00 before I can delete Illustrator CS5 which I keep as a kind of gap plug which I use maybe a couple of times a month to do things like Blend, simplify nodes on a path, distort vectors, quick vector 3d plus a few more things that designer doesn't currently do

I think Serif Labs needs more time to polish the algorithm that must be an inside job.
Serif launched Serif Photoplus in 1999; 20 years ago. Serif released 14 version of it before they retired it. Then Serif launched Affinity Photo 3 years ago. But with almost two decades of experience developing algorithms for photo editors. I expect more from a company with 20 years of experience. It is simply time to hire some experts and engineers. More than ever.
@Gnobelix I have seen that Affinity effect in real life - but it was smog in Beijing.
