I created a LOT of artwork, brochures, logos, posters etc. for a huge global healthcare company 20 years ago, especially in 2002. I could pick software freely unless I had to continue on previous work made in fx Illustrator. I used a lot of software, mostly Illustrator and CorelDRAW, but preferred CorelDRAW. Whatever I did it just was more fun and my workflow much faster in CorelDRAW. I certainly didn't suffer from a lack of features back then.
20 years later somebody claims they are "building world leading professional creative apps" and we are having this discussion because they are not there yet and 20 years ago I would have said the same about Affinity Designer 1.7. It makes me laugh. Serif is still trying to sell as many copies they can, did you experience their aggressive sales people before the Affinity line? Flies on the phone. "Create jaw dropping blah blah". Pile it high, sell them cheap. But they really should find and accept their niche - and it certainly is NOT in the advanced vector illustration business.
Tone down the rhetoric, Serif marketing, attract a segment you can actually fully serve. Save the big words for when you have the pro features in the products. Or focus on young artists with iPads making brush based artwork. Or, lets face it, small companies, people with a limited budget etc. It is great for them to have a cheap alternative. But it is not "world leading".
I am a curious guy who purchased and tried a lot of software (and did a lot of mansplaining to my wife who did not see the need), also every open source alternative there is. I like and prefer the user interface in the Affinity line, and I make a lot of doodles in it during brainstorm sessions. But the next step is always to launch Illustrator. So for now I call it Affinity Doodle.

    Hello Mark

Actually I just designed the label in Affinity Designer.
I exported it as a texture (png) and mapped it to a 3D model. The render part was done in Cinema 4D and then retouched it in Affinity Photo.
From Cinema I export as a layered PSD file so I have more control of the render passes: Illumination, Color, Shadows Ambient Occlusion, etc.

    Hi there,
I've created a series of labels done 100% done with Affinity Designer (layout, illustrations and text). Affnity Desiger has become one of my favourite tools for its speed and simplicity.
The product is a Marmelade sweetened with honey (no sugar) and is already on the market.
Below is a little promotional folder done in Affinity Publisher. I already love this program and finally a real photo of the product!
    Have fun

Or just download the file directly here: https://app.box.com/s/p7fao19irvpjz04zp5v2guefd5nv4uf2

They are free for use, but are not to be sold. If you want to redistribute them, please ask permission.

I made a huge banner (20 meter x 2,5 meter) completely in Designer.
More of the designs and details can be seen on my website: https://www.willempirquin.be/portfolio/tour-de-france-druivenstreek/
(Also, 90% of all work on my website is made in Designer).

it's more than 3 years that it asked: why when i press ctrl+cmd+I for image resize, the first field of the resize form doesn't get automatically selected? you force me to press TAB to select it (even worse use the mouse)
why if i am in Flood Fill Tool, i can't pick a colour by pressing any ctrl/shift/cmd key? i have to manually change to the Colour Picker, pick a color, and then go back to Flood Tool
why when i open an image it doesn't open at 100% (but at 105%!??!)
why if i select crop, i can't have a modifier to constrain to 1:1 (square).. or if i manually select it.. and come back later to crop i lose the selection?
and many many others oddities like these
i really don't understand.. there are bare minimum UX that every (at least in the Mac world) app has since 20 years... i would really like to use Affinity apps (i have all 3) but keep going back to Pixelmator that at least has a "normal" UX
hope to see some improvements by 2.0

There wouldn’t be cross-over functionality if the Pages in Desiner had the UI Design approach, and you are half-way afar from that.

So what is the "actual direction of the products" now?  I think as customers of Serif, it would not be out of character to want to know what is on the "roadmap".

Jowday reacted to Mark Ingram in Pages in Affinity Designer?
No, we just didn't want to start having a cross-over of functionality. We added Artboards to Designer after we had discussed pages, as that makes more sense for the majority of our customers.
If you don't want to buy the software, then please don't buy it. Use whatever software works for you.

Serif will be in to comment at some point. We have been told that creating a new topic in the bug forums creates a trouble ticket, and that the trouble tickets are handled in order by the staff responsible for handling that product.
So, we should see a response when the trouble ticket for this topic reaches the front of its queue. It can take awhile when the staff are very busy.

Perhaps artboards will do. I just prefer working with pages like I did once in DrawPlus. Ideal for brainstorming. Every page has its own layers. I jump from one concept to another. Every page and concept is isolated. Switching between them is fast and logical.
Studiolink is a great idea when Publisher is your main tool. It never will be mine.

    Hi.
    Problem:
I have noticed that when the APPEARANCE panel is directly visible, operations like moving/resizing object or moving nodes become choppy.
    Solution that worked for me:
Hiding APPEARANCE panel completely or placing it "behind" another panel tab.

    My system:
    Affinity Designer 1.7.1.404
    Windows 10
Changing GPU settings (from AMD Radeon to integrated Intel GPU) does not make any difference.

Jowday reacted to Alchemist42 in I really like the 'idea' of Publisher... but everything I've tried with it so far had me return to the latest/last PagePlus.
I'm a long time fan of Page Plus and have used it on dozens of projects.  I also work with InDesign / IDML in my development work...    I've been looking forward to Publisher for a while so snapped it up upon release.   But so far everything I've started on it... I've ended up stuck...
Lets take a simple PDF cleanup...  I had a PDF that someone tacked on a cover page using some software so it was several times larger than the other pages... so I just wanted to load the PDF, fix that page size and save it again.   In Publisher I loaded the 32mb document... couldn't find a setting in page properties for the first page to reset it to letter... so ended up duplicating page 2,  copying and resizing the page 1 image on the new page... then deleting the original page.  Clumsy but it works...   Then I saved the document as a publisher file... 320mb. (10 times the size of the original PDF) then I exported it to a PDF and the result was a 400mb PDF file.    32mb to 400mb.

Next I did the same thing in PagePlus…   loaded the document, went to the page properties on page one and reset it to 'letter' 8.5x11...  resized the image and saved the exported the document to PDF... it resulted in a 40mb PDF file...   still bigger but not excessively larger.

Next I experimented with recreating a project I had been working on in PagePlus since Publisher can't and wont load Page Plus Documents...  that project uses some of the pageplus smart objects as 'counters'...  but all the smart objects in Publisher start at 3 or more sides... so useless as a count indicator...  so that project will have to stay in page plus.

So pretty much...  while I think publisher looks really cool and I hope to see great things from it... for me, at least so far its the equivalent of a lawn ornament...   that really great looking muscle car that sits in front of your house because it doesn't run.

Jowday reacted to Friksel in [AD 1.7.1.404] 'Lock colorspace' is not what this button does
The lock-button in the color panel says 'Lock colorSPACE'. But that's not at all what it does. It's only locking the selected view-layout of the color-panel.
I call this a bug, because this text is not at all right and looks like a typo or some quickly set text that's never really got checked before a release. Lock has nothing to do with color-spaces, not even with the color-model the document is in. Calling it Colorspace is not only wrong, but very confusing here and leads to mis-understanding and even fear about what this lock does. Color models and color spaces are already confusing and complicated enough, so please change this tooltip to something not connected to that and easier to understand.
I would also advise to avoid terms like 'color mode' (like seen in the help-file), because than it still feels like there's some connection with color models and color spaces.
Why not something more descriptive and understandable for designers, like 'Lock color panel view', 'Lock color panel mode' or something like that, in my opinion that's way better to understand for users and prevents confusing with (and fear for) color models, spaces and profiles. or misconceptions. Than we understand directly what it does without having to fear it's technically affecting our color space or model of the document.
I think than more people might start using the lock button too, because then there's no fear of technically changing some color thing in the back causing unexpected color problems.

(This also counts for Photo and Publisher)

Whoever made this example image will have had to create the perspective by hand.
