Daz and Fixx thanks, I was about to post a screenshot showing the problem, but then had one last try and found that CLIP TO CANVAS tick was on. Thanks everyone. I still have to resolve the issue of not being able to place a docx file. I'll keep at it.

My placed Photo images, although sized correctly including bleed (in Photo), don't show up in my Designer bleed area, they appear, but they are 'clipped' to the trim area, nothing in the bleed area. ? The other thing is, every other application (that I know) has an artboard where items can be placed for later inclusion onto the page. But in Designer, any item I place disappears when I move it off the actual page. I'm sure that this is some very simple setting, but I can't find info on this in the tutorials such as 'Artboard'. I didn't 'get' this Artboard tutorial... it demonstrated various ways of drawing an artboard, but gave no explanation at all of why you would want to do this... I kept thinking "yes, but what on earth for!". Can't I just have a 'normal' artboard on which items are visible? Ta, Jools

Thanks Alan and Walt. Yes, interesting... I've poked away at this problem with no luck so far. I'll keep at it. In the meantime I can copy and paste txt so no real biggie, but that could become very clumsy with long publications in Publisher. I'm using recent versions of the 3 Affinity Applications, I think 1.8.3 (Designer) and 1.8.6 (Photo and Publisher) A screenshot wouldn't really help as the placed text just doesn't show. (I'm pretty clued up on potential traps like excessive space before, text colour, text size etc, -been using this sort of stuff since probably before you were born! (you could call me a pm3, (remember that?) qxd, Indd, cdr, ai, psd fugitive!) Apologies for posting in the wrong 'area', I'll try to ask in the right place. Thanks again. Cheers. In both Designer and Publisher, I'm unable to place a .doc or .docx file. .doc files are greyed out, in the file/place dialogue, -I saved one .doc file as a .docx which (at least was visible in the place dialogue, but the text just flashed into my text frame instantaneously and disappeared. Nothing there. I can laboriously copy and paste the text from Word, but it surely shouldn't be a problem should it? I've tried plenty of tweaks to help, but with no success.

Apologies for hijacking the thread! I didn't take enough care to note that the OP was referring to Publisher not Designer. I'd better get publisher then eh? Several decades using applications like PM, QXD, InDD has spoiled me... I ended up completing the job in Word of all things.

I can't even find out how to create multiple columns and flow text between them. There's nothing on the 'context' toolbar (with Para text tool selected), and I can see nothing relevant in the Para palette. I simply need to create a page with 2 columns and be able to flow text between the columns, and then create paragraph rules, - fine 'automatic' rules between paragraphs. Maybe I need a later version? I'm using Affinity Designer ver 1.8.2 Is this too much too ask? :-)

Me... Jools. User of AI (and CDR) before most of you were born!!! (Yes I remember DOS and that very first horrible version of Windows). And I did it with paper and paints before - when 'digital' was something you did with your fingers. 'High end' graphic designer (never used hack clip art in my life!) Fluent with AI, PSD, INDD. My initial playing with AFF Des gives me plenty of hope for an escape from Adobe's fascist rental greed! As a (very) longtime AI (and CS suite) user, I think I'm going to LOVE Affinity! BUT... What's the deal with the pasteboard? I'm used to being able to keep items on the pasteboard for moving them in and out of the page as I design. But when I move items off the page onto the pasteboard, they disappear, -only visible where they overlap the page area. I'm sure this is a VERY simple thing, but I've searched, and poked around prefs and page setup and haven't been able to find how to get a true pasteboard like AI, CDR, or INDD. Forgive me. Jools
