[Affinity Designer - Linework?]

I am using Affinity Designer since about ~3 hours and since I started it I am struggling with my first project.

 

I want to create a ruby like this: http://pngimg.com/uploads/ruby/ruby_PNG18.png, but I do not know how to properly display the cuts. I tried using the pencil for it but that doesn't seem to work. Is there any other way for creating such linework?

I started with Affinity Photo around 3 days ago.

I am currently trying to take a picture and put one third on one layer, the next on another, and the final on a third.

Is there any easy way to do this?
