You dont understand.

The original image is 3000 x 3000 pixels at 72 dpi.

I place the image into a 300x300 canvas at 72 dpi.

It shouldnt be pixelated. It should be smooth. Im not upsizing the image.

Why are my placed images (3000 x 3000 pixels) in a 300 x 300 pixel canvas pixelated?

What am i missing?
