  1. Affinity Publisher has started outputting distorted vector elements on pages when exporting to PDF.

I'm flummoxed as to why. Only two weeks ago I exported the same documents, using the same preset (that I've used dozens of times) and the resulting PDFs were absolutely fine. I'm exporting to PDF using PDF/X 1a.

I can get the elements to be output correctly if I check 'JPEG compression' on export (should that have an effect on vectors?), but then the resulting PDF is 10x the size, at 900MB!, the same file two weeks ago was around 92MB.

I've tried rasterizing the vectors before export, but they're still distorted in the PDF.

Am I missing something obvious, or is this a bug? I'm on macOS 14.4.1.

UPDATE: I've just tested my PDF export preset on Windows using a virtual machine on my Mac, and it outputs correctly. So it's an issue with the Mac version, macOS, or my Mac?

UPDATE 2: A complete uninstall and reinstall hasn't helped.

  2. Something curious is happening when I generate pages from data merge. The content on the first page of my document shifts down by approximately 0.22 inches with every generation.

It's only happening on the first page - which doesn't contain any data fields. I've tried the page with and without a master applied. Locking the content makes no difference either.

It's not difficult to sort out, I just realign the content after the final generate, but it makes me slightly nervous about how reliable the entire layout is after running a data merge.

Try the following, on your first Actual page, the right hand page, check in the layers panel and see if there is the left hand page from the master. Use Edit Detached and delete this left hand stuff from the Actual page.

Thanks so much, that appears to have done the trick!

One final question if you don’t mind. The single right hand page is followed by double facing pages that continue the data merge. When I click generate, the resulting pages loop alternately through the single page and the double page, rather than continuing with the double pages.

I guess I’m doing something wrong, any ideas what it could be?

  4. A bit of a newbie issue here.

I've drawn a curve shape using the pen tool, then drawn another curve inside that visually separates the original shape.

I want to fill each area of the shape with a different colour, but I can't see how. I've tried different combinations of merging curves, doing nodes etc, but can't quite figure it out. The fill tool always fills the entire shape, with missing areas.

I thought this might be because the shapes aren't joined properly, but when I try to join them, new lines are created.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong?

Attached images show the original shape, the result when I try to fill a section, and the result when I try to close curves. Join curves also creates a new line.

  5. Thanks guys!

Unless they specifically don’t want anything to be ‘under’ the border – e.g. they want the content ‘cropped/clipped’ so that the border area is totally empty. In that case the process might be more complicated.

This has confused me a bit (not difficult!). In what situation would someone need this?

In this case, the white border is purely cosmetic.

  6. From what I can see, there isn't currently an inbuilt way to build a book cover in publisher?

I've completed all of the content of my book, but now need to work out how create the cover in a way that could be adjusted if required.

Is the easiest approach to duplicate a master, then change the dimensions to allow for the spine in the centre, adjusting the margins location and design from there?

  7. I've added a text frame to a page, and made some edits, such as adding a coloured border.

Since then I haven't been able to select, move, edit, or delete the text frame. I can edit the content, but not the frame itself.

The frame has very small 'x' icons instead of handles.

I've tried several key combinations, and checked to see if anything is locked, and it appears not.

  8. I have an iPhone app which I use to create iPhone mockups.

When exporting the generated png images, it includes a relatively large transparent area around the main image.

When using Sketch, I can drag in the images and then re-export them without any editing, the transparent area surrounding the original image is automatically removed.

Is there a way to easily remove this transparent area in AD or AP?
