Kerwin reacted to mayfly in Why is it so hard to rotate something?
I often think that the designers of Affinity Photo have looked at how things are implemented in other applications and then deliberately done something else. I don't mind that they've done something different, but it shouldn’t make theoretically simple tasks really hard...
I wanted to rotate a layer by a degree or two... There's no rotate tool. There are rotate options in the menus, but they only do 90º steps. Maybe the move tool has a rotate mode? Nope... Try the help... Ah - there's a transform panel... but it is greyed out and there is no obvious way to enable it... Google search... find a forum thread from when the application was in beta and nobody could figure this out... Right - so you have to select the move tool for the transform panel to do anything. That's just illogical.
So - please remove the connection between the transform panel and the move tool. There is nothing in the interface or the help to suggest there is one, and I can't see any reason why there should be one. And please turn the move tool into a more general transform tool, with modes for move, scale, rotate and skew. People will probably be able to figure that out without all the frustration.

The mesh warp tool will do it. A very quick try so maybe not perfect.

Kerwin reacted to Mr. Doodlezz in Window → Arrange | Arrangement options for file windows
    Hey everybody,
I am currently looking for the function to arrange file windows (or different views of a file) in Affinity Publisher.
I know this feature was available in Photoshop, where I used it every day.
Are there plans to add a similar feature to the Affinity Range? That would be great!
In Photoshop there are the following arrangement options to choose from:
    Arrange → Cascade
    Arrange → Tile
    Arrange → Float in Window
Arrange → Float All in Window
Arrange → Consolidate All to Tabs
If there's already a topic about this I'm sorry, I couldn't find it.
    Greetings

One of the things I really miss in Affinity software is the ability to quickly arrange open documents, yes I know you can Float and Dock them, but wouldn't it be nice to have the option to arrange tabbed 2up Vertical or Horizontal, or even 3Up, 4 up etc. What about adding the option to 'Tile' tabbed windows that would be a start!
As it is now I have to float the windows, move them around and resize them to suite, which is tedious! It is like going back in time!
Maybe I have been spoilt by other software that offers this facility; but I think it's time Affinity had this feature, especially since most people now have bigger monitor/displays and can make use of such a useful feature.

Kerwin got a reaction from sfriedberg in Soft Proof adjustment lists deleted icc profiles
    Hi to all,
A post to relaunch this subject.
I just went through another round of cleaning out C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color and the Affinity Photo Soft Proof adjustment continues to list long-deleted icc files.
Everything in the preceding exchanges continues to be true except for being on AP version 1.10.4.1198 now.
The "long-deleted" above is important: In the \color folder, there were many icc files downloaded for various printers and papers. After cleaning out the folder, most disappeared from the Soft Proof adjustment's Proof Profile list, but there remains a handful of them that continue to be listed, despite the fact that they no longer exist anywhere on my computer, as best as I can determine.
So again, if anyone has an idea as to how to eliminate these "ghosts" from the Soft Proof adjustment's Proof Profile list, I'm all ears.
And, should this thread be sent over to whoever as a bug report?
Thanks and happy shooting to all.

    Default Export-as folder followup:
I've come up with an idea that if it, or some variation of it, is implemented, it might be very helpful to a lot of people.  I mocked up a screen shot (in Affinity Photo of course) of the Export-as dialog window (attached) with a new drop-down menu that has 2 choices:
Use source folder (which means the folder either the background image file is in or the folder the .afphoto file is in if re-opening it) Use previous folder (which means use whichever folder was last exported to (for those who want to export repeatedly to this folder regardless of where source is located) An alternative would be for one of those to be the default Export-as location, and there be a radio button or check box to override that to the other option.

Obivously not enough people are signing on to get serious attention from Affinity, but I believe for every one person who has commented that they want the option, there are at least 50 more people who would if they noticed this request.
If you agree please get more people to put their voice into this request !
In any case the most important thing about this request is that:
1 Those who like it the way it is (no choice) need not worry that this would change
2 This is not something that is very difficult to do. No major programming project to simply give this choice to the user.
3 The best programs always pay attention to the users feedback, and when possible, with little costs in time, they make the users happy. This vastly improves the customer relation and results in the best word of mouth recommendations resulting in more sales. Everyone wins.
    Thanks for a great program,
    Dan

I asked for this when Photo first came out on Windows. It is enormously disappointing that it is still not there, it must be simple enough surely? The amount of time I waste chasing up and down folder trees, starting a C: every time :-(

The most important idea is to allow the USER to set this as her/his preference. That way everyone would be happy to be allowed to work the way they want, without the frustration of wasting time browsing to set the desired output folder.

    Hi Dan C,
    Thank you for this confirmation.
Indeed since this doesn't happen to photos without the XMP metadata dates, I too deduct that it isn't Google defaulting to the current timezone info but rather misusing the metadata.
As for deleting the XMP metadata dates and retesting, uhm, errrr, well, I'll have to figure out how to do that with exiftool (which I only use in a consultative fashion), but yes, I'll give that a try and report back.
    Thanks again and happy shooting!

Exactly. I probably wouldn't mind the extra click on Rotate if it wasn't for the fact that it doesn't adjust to any margin post-rotation. You're just left hanging there Affinity saying, "nope; you have to do everything."

No it’s not possible to create a contact sheet in Affinity Photo, although there is a nice app called XnViewMP which can create contact sheets and it’s free. In XnViewMP it’s under the Create Menu, kind of obvious but thought I’d fast track ya lol!

Indeed I do not understand the decision to prevent the applied aspect ratio from resolving to the original orientation of the image. I don't see any logic in this.
All portrait photographers will have to create their own bank of aspect ratio presets, as I will have to now. Otherwise the crop overlay will have to be rotated and dragged to fit either vertical edge of the image; a lot of unnecessary extra work for a large portrait shoot.

Thanks Walt for your rapid response.
    ...
I'll try to keep my mind open as to the interest of changing that behavior, but ... that just seems silly on the part of Serif. I think I can speak for the photo community by saying that it is very rare that I'm going to crop a landscape orientation out of a portrait image.

    But nonetheless, thank you.

@ Ali, Thanks for the idea, but no, this new behavior indeed affects all images. EDIT: I did try the "Restore Master Presets" function in the Presets Manager (both globally and by category), but that had no effect.

Kerwin reacted to süppel in When are sticky settings for the tools finally coming??? (feature request since 2015)
    Dear developers,
It's unbelievable: since 2015, hundreds of users have asked here in the forum for "sticky settings" for the tools, but it is simply ignored by the Serif developers.
Sorry, but it's just annoying to have to reconfigure the tools again and again after opening each file!!!
...and with the selection brush it's even worse: here you even have to select the mode separately each time.
It can't be that difficult to integrate these functions into the app. Every other image editing app offers this by default.
Please, oh please 🙏 finally provide sticky settings with the next update!

Kerwin reacted to Dan C in Affinity Photo - customize resize brush shortcuts for ALL brushes at once?
    Hi @Mabian,
My sincerest apologies for the delayed response here, as we have been closed over the holidays!
With the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog open, please navigate to any of the brush tools - I used the Selection Brush Tool purely as this is the first brush tool listed.
Now, make sure to check Apply to all before changing the shortcut.

With this checkbox active, changing the Increase/Decrease size shortcut will also change any other instances of this shortcut, meaning you simply need to set the keys for one brush and all other brush tools should follow this change.
    I hope this helps

Kerwin reacted to Sugar Lion in Crop Tool Set Default to Original Ratio
    Hi
Every time I load in a new picture to edit it I go to the crop tool. About 95% of the time I want to crop in the same ratio that I took the photo in. I have to think that most people are doing the best they can to frame there photos the way they want them to be. Also there is no use working in free mode as default because it does not relate to printing. It only makes sense to me that the default operation of the crop tool should be set to the ratio that the document is when loaded.
Having this even as a little check box somewhere as "Default Ratio as Document" in the settings or something would be amazing.
Anyone else feel the same way?
    All the best

Kerwin reacted to GMPhotography in Blend Range preview
I'd like to request a hotkey option in blend range where pressing and holding the hotkey will give you a grey or red mask showing you exactly what areas are coming through/being affected. This would help it in being more exact and blend range would truly become the new luminosity masking. It's only limitation is that you can't physically see what EXACTLY you're affecting. I get the feeling that blend range wants to be a scalpel, but without this option, it's still a bludgeon.  There are workarounds but if it were a hotkey option, it would be so smooth.

Also, as I added in a different feature request, changing from master to Red, Green Or Blue should allow you to control not the colour, but the channel, or maybe put in a channel selector so you can choose the blend of say, a blur filter, to only affect the shadows of the red channel and nothing else. Currently if you adjust green and blue down so it is not affecting those pixels at all, it also still affects the red, and quite significantly at that. There is a workaround to that as well: creating grey-scale images of each of the channels and working on them individually and then rebuilding the colour image, but Blend Range is SO CLOSE to achieving this in one simple step.

The histogram in both the Photo and Develop Persona is blue where I would expect it to be white. The individual RGB channels all display properly but where they overlap the histogram is blue. I have version 1.7.1.404 and have just downloaded it. Any ideas why it's like this? It's not really useable as it is.

Hi, I tried to find it by moving there and back, but couldn't: contribution slider on denoise filter is a mistery to me, how does it differs from amount slider?
It looks to me that both sliders just affect the amount applied, be it luminance of colour denoise.

There are some differences to be aware of.
Capture One highlight clipping illuminates a pixel when one or more of the RGB components is greater than or equal to the clipping threshold that's user-adjustable in the app preferences.
Affinity Develop highlight clipping (red) illuminates a pixel when all three components are greater than or equal to the clipping threshold that's not user-adjustable.
Affinity Develop "tones" clipping (yellow) illuminates a pixel when one or two, but not three, components are greater than or equal to the clipping threshold that's not user-adjustable.
You'll need to enable both highlight and "tones" clipping to get a behaviour similar to Capture One, although with red and yellow illumination in Affinity.
