Kerwin reacted to rikkarlo in White balance tool bugged for non-raw files both in develop and photo persona
Hi everyone, I'd like to bring back a bug report that has been totally ignored since 2021, which I think is urgent and deserves to be discussed.
Below you can find two very old threads talking about it.
    to summarize:
the white balance tool is not working properly for non-raw files both in the develop persona and in the photo persona (through the adjustment layers).
-what the tool should do: colour pick a pixel and equalize the RGB values to convert the colour of the pixel to a neutral grey (RGB values equal to each other) then apply the same RGB shift to the whole image.
-what the tool really does: in develop persona with a raw file it works properly, when used on tiff, png, jpg (etc.) it does not work.

    What we observed:
    -the sliders in the develop persona with a raw file open are called "temperature" and "tint" and both of them are properly moved automatically when using the white balance tool, in this case it works properly;
-however in the photo persona (white balance adjustment layer) they are called "white balance" and "tint", and only the "white balance" slider move when colour picking the image, we don't see why they should be called and behave differently since it is the same tool that already works properly for raw files in the develop persona.

A possible way to fix the bug:
-just apply the same rule applied for raw files (in the develop persona) also to non-raw files (both in the develop persona and photo persona adjustment layers).
    kind regards: Riccardo

    Hi @rikkarlo,
This issue is still with the Developers to fix and hasn't been forgotten about.
I've updated the report with a link back to this thread, so you will get a notification here, when this has been resolved

The .afphoto file format is supported by XnView MP (a thumbs preview), but you have to activate Show all graphic formats in Tools → Settings... → General → General.

Kerwin reacted to Raptosauru5 in Top rotation handle often blocking distance measurement number
    This is happening SO OFTEN!

When moving one object apart/to the other up/down using arrow keys in my case, the top rotation handle happens to often (with the zoom level I am often using) block the digit of distance the studio is trying to show you (currently in Designer).
Can you please ideally render this number IN FRONT of the handle instead of behind it? Or nudge it to the side or allow user to make the numbers larger. Or even removing the handle? (Users can rotate objects using corners anyway).
    Thanks for consideration!

Kerwin reacted to Ferdinand13 in Photo Develop Persona - Invert Overlays
Another useful addition to the Overlay functionality would be able to invert the gradient and brush overlays. Currently you are only able to use the "inside" of your selections (say if you're using a radial gradient). However, a lot of times you might want to affect what's "outside" your selection, so an invert option would be highly appreciated.

Kerwin reacted to Ferdinand13 in Photo Develop Persona - HSL and Calibration settings
    Hey there,
Coming from Adobe Camera RAW, there are a couple of settings that are still sorely missed inside of Affinity Photo. Namely the ability to make changes to the Hue, Saturation and Luminance via a "HSL" section, as well as a "Camera Calibration" section that would allow to change the way in which the primaries are interpreted before any of the other settings of the Develop Persona are being applied.
This link gives a better idea of what is possible inside ACR: Render Impeccable Skin Tone Easily, Using Camera Raw & A Slider You Didn’t Know Existed
Having this functionality would really make a big difference in how RAW pictures could be developed inside Affinity Photo - at the moment things still feel a bit too basic.

Kerwin reacted to smadell in Gamma slider feels inverted
Although I understand the math, my “gut” understanding of the Gamma slider has always been to see it as the “grey point.” I visualize this as if I had created a black to white gradient map with a 50% grey value dead center. If I shift that central point to the right, the underlying image gets darker because more of the midtones are being mapped to darker grey values. Slide the midpoint to the left, and the image gets lighter, because the underlying luminance values in the midtones are being mapped to even lighter values.
I don’t know if the Gamma slider is precisely equivalent to a Grey Point slider mathematically. But, conceptually, it has always worked for me as a way to understand what’s going on.

Kerwin got a reaction from walt.farrell in Soft Proof adjustment (still) lists deleted icc profiles
Thanks @walt.farrell, and good to know that one can't accidentally import an ICC.
At C:\Users\[Me]\.affinity\Photo\2.0\profiles, there is only the empty "Blacklist.txt" file, which we had seen the last time.
And at C:\Users\[Me]\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Photo, there appear to be only remnant 1.0 files in both \Common and \Photo. Following through in this latter to \Profiles, there is again only an empty "Blacklist.txt" file.
So, at least that's ruled out. Already a good thing.
Thanks again and happy shooting to you.

I would like to have the Local Contrast from the tonal value persona as a live filter in the Photo persona. The transition into the tonal value persona breaks the nondestructive workflow.

Kerwin reacted to fde101 in Show own grid has become very cumbersome in Photos 2
The problem with this is that the grid is a per-document setting - you can have different grids selected in different documents - it is not an application property.
The canonical solution for this in the Affinity products is to create a template with the grid set up the way you want it, then use that template when creating new documents.
There is a problem, however, when working with Photo, in that many documents are created by "opening" a RAW file or other raster image file, which in effect creates a new Affinity Photo document and imports the image into a new layer of that document which is then named "Background".
Currently there is no opportunity to access a grid which is stored in a template when "opening" raster images in this way, and I believe that is the problem which should actually be solved.  Rather than a piecemeal solution for one property at a time (grid, etc.), I think the best way for this to work is to allow the user to specify a template of their choice to use when "opening" raster images or RAW files, perhaps with an option to use it (or a different one) when creating from a preset also (as this is something that is a bit more iffy).
The user could then save a template with their desired grid settings, maybe a few adjustment layers for soft proofing (likely turned off but still set up and ready to go), and when they open a raster image, it would open a copy of the template, set the document size to match the image being opened, and import the raster image into a new layer on the bottom of the Layers panel.
This would solve the problem for the grid, allow the user to rig custom adjustment layers to be ready to go for any new image they open, have custom document color swatches (even global ones) in place and ready to go, etc...  and it should be fairly straightforward as all of the underlying mechanics to make it happen already exist in the application.

Thanks for the tip. It seems like this should be the default behaviour (without having to hold a modifier key), considering that jumping between 0, 1, and 2 has (as far as I can see) no practical purpose.
@Affinity: maybe it would make more sense to jump by 0.1 with no modifier key pressed, and by 0.01 with a modifier key (like CTRL) pressed?

Kerwin reacted to John74 in Levels window Gamma number field
When in the Levels adjustment window, when the cursor is in the Gamma's number field (see attached screenshot), if the user presses the up or down arrows on the keyboard, this steps the gamma from 0 to 1 to 2, with no steps in between. I find that these are excessively large steps that have no practical use. Usually when I want to change the Gamma, it's by a few tenths or hundredths, not by 1. As a comparison, when the cursor is in the Black Level or White Level number fields, pressing the up/down arrows steps up/down by 1% at a time, which is much more granular and useful.
Can you please change how the Gamma's number field reacts to keyboard presses from the up/down arrows? Maybe adjust it by 0.1 or 0.01 for each press?

Couldn't agree more.  I am so disappointed that there has been no effort to address this in V2.
The most annoying for me is crop always going to "unconstrained" when 99% of the time I want "Original Ratio".  I also almost always want Clone, Healing brush et al to default to "current layer & below" not "current layer".

Kerwin reacted to Contemporary Dave in Editing Multiple Raw Files at the Same Time
I'm a newcomer to Affinity Photo, so please forgive me if this has already been addressed or if AP already has this feature.
It would be nice if Affinity Photo could have the ability to view and edit multiple Raw files at the same time - like you can do in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). With ACR you can select multiple raw images displayed in a column, apply the same adjustments and do individual tweaks to your raws very quickly. From what I can see, you can only edit a single raw image at a time, which makes the whole process of editing a few hundred raw files very time consuming.

Kerwin reacted to jweitzel in Feature request: (at least) AFPhoto should remember altered tool etc. parameters for a session
Example: I've opened 10 pictures with portraits of my team in order to optimize and crop them for web purposes.
If I want to make a nice cutout of the torso in the proportion 4:5 in those 10 files, every time I flip to the next picture, I first have to choose the crop-tool (! although afore already choosen) and even more have the setup again the crop tool to "proportion" and to "4:5".
This is very annoying. (Smart alecs!: because every person is pictured in some other way, there is no help in a macro!)

Therefore my feature request: At least in AFPhoto, the application should remember those tool changes or typed-in parameters in a lot of dialogues as long as it is running (=> dropped when app is quitted).

    Thanks for listening

I'm a loooooong time Photoshop user. And when I say "loooooooog time", I mean I started with version 1.0 of Photoshop.
Although I still have to work with Photoshop at my workplace (since the agency where I work, uses the Creative Suite), at home I use Affinity Photo (except for work having to do with intensive alpha mask work, as Photoshop is still much, much better at it).
However, I do try to transition as much as possible to Affinity Photo, for all bitmap related work (I fully transitioned to Affinity Designer for all my vector work). But I still find some things that I have to admit that Photoshop does better and the Dodge and Burn tools are some of those things.
Take a look at the attached image and tell me what you guys think.

I do every single time I have to crop. Having to select it every single time by default as opposed to Photo starting with a constrained ratio is so annoying. Free form cropping is VERY rarely useful in photography in my experience.

Yea this is one major reason I haven't jumped onto the affinity wagon just yet.. Tools, colors,  resetting their values when opening new files is ridiculous. I also work on numerous files that need the same unique settings that I predetermined on the first file. It's a loss of time re-establishing the same settings over and over again.
We've already gotten all the best tools and functionality we can possibly think of, now it's about which company can give the fastest, easiest smartest way to help us do our job. Sadly it's still  greedy ADOBE. ;(
Whoever does it right will get a billion users jumping the Adobe ship.

I can't see how this is an improvement, or any reason for it other than "that's how Photoshop does it"! (Great for people just coming from Photoshop, but APITA for the many people who have been using Affinity for a while and would have to get used to a new layout with no actual benefit in doing so!)

+1 XnView is outstanding (and free).
For showing/previewing Affinity files the option "Show all graphic formats" should be checked (Tools → Settings... → General)
For previewing PDF and Illustrator files, Ghostscript needs to be installed.
Besides image, XnView can preview and play video and audio files.
Also, in "Tools > Open With" you can set multiple external editors, which can be triggered through the menu or shortcuts (Alt+1...Alt+9).
