  1. Hi again Walt,

    To get back to you as promised, the only thing in the "Profiles" folder at  C:\Users\(me)\AppData\Roaming\Affinity\Photo\1.0\profiles was an empty text file named "blacklist.txt"

    I did, just to make sure I was in the right place, use the "File>Import ICC Profile..." function in Affinity to import a file, and indeed it showed up there.

    Also, at  C:\Program Files\Affinity\Affinity Photo\Resources\ there is a "ICC" folder, but it contains only the default iccs delivered with Affinity (AdobeRGB1998.icc and co.).

    I also looked at C:\ProgramData\Affinity\Photo\1.0, but there are only two files therein: "LensProfiles" and "Plugins".

    I didn't see any other promising folder names.

    By the way, I did download Affinity directly from the website.

    So the mystery remains intact at least for the moment.

    Any other ideas from you or others are welcome!

    Thanks for your help!

    Yes, the deleted files stay in the Proof Profile list, even after a restart of Affinity and for that matter after a restart of the computer.

    I deleted the out of date icc files months ago.

    Any ideas?

    PS: For that matter, I can even apply the deleted icc files, i.e., when I click on them, the image will change in the window, as images do when you apply an icc file. So, it's as if Affinity has internalized the icc data...

  3. Hi all,

    I'm on a Windows 10, 64-bit machine and running Version 1.7.3.481 of Affinity Photo.

    The "Proof Profile" list in the Soft Proof adjustment continues to list icc files that have been deleted from C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color.

    Here's a screen grab:

    You'll see that there is only one "PICTO_Lambda (...)" file in the color folder (...Satine_5.icc) in Windows Explorer, but there are three in the Proof Profile list in the Soft Proof adjustment (...Brillant_3.icc, ...Satine_3.icc and Satine_5.ICC (the extension presenting oddly in capital letters), this latter being the one in the color folder).

    Indeed, I had manually deleted the ..Brillant_3.icc, and ...Satine_3.icc profiles from the color folder because they were outdated.

    But, Affinity keeps showing them to me, which creates quite a bit of confusion.

    Is there a way to get Affinity to update the Proof Profile list to what is actually in the color folder?

  4. Same problem here, and for me it's happening with nearly all the tools (Zoom, Clone, Paint brush, Selection brush, Eraser, etc.) and nearly all Live Filters (Clarity, High Pass, Denoise, Lens Distortion, etc.).

    This problem appeared with the 1.7 update (maybe the 1.7.1?); before that update it wasn't there.

  5. So, down the rabbit hole of color management for us!

    I'm on a Windows 10, 64-bit operating system with a run-of-the-mill Dell P2414H.

    I purchased a ColorMunki Display to calibrate my monitor.

    In the preferences of the program delivered with it, you have the choice of ICC profile version 2 or version 4.

    It defaults to version 4, but my Googling appears to suggest that version 4 may be problematic in numerous situations. However, I'm also having a hard time finding recent AND reliable info (ironically X-rite's own information is very dated).

    Of course, I'm most concerned about all this in Affinity Photo, so, first question:

    Do you advise ICC version 2 or 4? Can AP handle both of them (if that even comes into question), or is it better to use the older ICC version 2?

    And more largely (second question), is there anything specific that I need to do to make sure that AP is... correctly calling upon the monitor calibration information in the icm file?

    I'm asking because I also use RawTherapee for more "in-depth" raw development, and in that program, you have to indicate the monitor's color profile (point the program to the current monitor calibration icm file, so to speak).  I don't see any such thing in Affinity Photo, although I do think Affinity Photo is completely "color managed"(?). So, I suppose there i a third implicite question: How does AP insert itself into the color management pipeline on any given computer?

    De excuse me if my terminology is off; I hope everything is understandable and thank you all in advance for your feedback!

  6. Hi all,

    I'm assuming I'm missing something really simple, but how do you dismiss, or let go of certain sub-tools?

    Two examples:

    • If I activate the Crop tool, then choose its Straighten tool, then decide that a don't want the Straighten tool after all (for example, I decide to just straighten the image by grabbing a corner and rotating manually), I can't (or surely don't see how to) un-choose the Straighten tool. It seems like the only thing I can do is to cancel the entire operation.
    • Same thing with the Picker in a Curves adjustment layer. Once I've clicked on the Picker, I can't get rid of it without closing the layer completely.

    I've tried re-clicking the sub-tool, hitting the Escape key, hitting the Delete key (don't do that)...

    What am I missing? How do you "let go" of these sub-tools without closing the parent tool?

  7. Many of the adjustments, when accessed via the Adjustment panel, have defaults pre-installed.

    In and of itself, that's not a problem, but what is a problem is that these defaults can neither be deleted nor modified, nor replaced (this is the case at least for the Windows version of Affinity Photo).

    Users should be able to set their own defaults for adjustments, instead of being obliged to click away from a non-modifiable default.

    I agree with R C-R on this: indeed if you choose an adjustment in the Adjustment panel, and if there's a default, it's applied.

    But I wonder if the Windows version of AP might behave differently than the Mac version??

    In any case, I'll post this as a request, because users should be able to set their own defaults.

  9. Hi All,

    In Affinity Photo, there are default adjustments for most of the items in the Adjustment panel.

    These defaults are applied, well, by default.

    A right-click on these defaults displays a context menu, but both choices, "Rename..." and "Delete" are inactive (at least in my Windows 10 system).

    I've tried starting Affinity with administrator privileges, but the context menu choices remain inactive.

    I also see no way to assign a new, added preset as default.

    Is there indeed no way to delete or modify the default adjustments, or am I missing something?

  10. Hi to all, 

    I would like to suggest an RGB indicator for the histogram in Affinity Photo, notably in the Photo Persona, but it would of course be good to have it in all the Personas.

    I've attached an image below showing the RGB indicator in RawTherapee as an example; it's the bar underneath the histogram, indicating where the R, G, B and luminance values of the hovered-over pixel fall in the histogram. I took this screen shot with my mouse positioned over the band of trees in the image.

    I find this indicator to be extremely useful, especially as a quick way of verifying details in very deep shadows or very bright highlights. It lets you see instantly, for example, if all channels are blown out, or if you have just one channel blown out with others still contributing detail. Seeing the position of the pixel value in the histogram is, at least for me, much more informative than the simple number given by the Info box.

    So the take home message:

    • adding the soft proof layer is usually done after, but can de done at the start as long as...
    • it stays on the TOP of the stack...
    • and one remembers to deactivate it BEFORE sending the file to the printer

  12. Hi everyone,

    I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of soft proofing, or, rather, I feel like I'm missing some obscure nuance on it.

    I've read all of Affinity Photo's help files and watched all its videos AND spent hours bouncing around the web trying to come to grips with the subject.

    But here's the thing: as near as I can determine, soft proofing is always presented as something that you do after having processed the photo to what you want it to look like. So, by definition you're telling yourself, "all right! That's what I want my print to look like. Let's soft proof it... uuuhh, no, that's not it".

    Should this not be the other way around?

    That is, if your goal is to print a photo, shouldn't the very first adjustment layer be the soft proof adjustment layer, with the pertinent icc file and rendering intent chosen, and THEN you do all your other adjustments on top of that to get the photo how you want it to look?

    Also, let's say that you can do things in that order; when I'm done with all the other various adjustments, should i still deactivate the soft proof layer before sending the photo to the printer?

    I thank you all in advance for any light that you can shed on this subject.

  13. Hi everyone,

    I've recently switched to Affinity Photo and am globally very happy with the program. However, I'm noticing something strange:

    The effect of a Live Filter sharpening layer (any of the three: clarity, UMF, high pass) seems to be dampened when I merge the layer down or flatten the image. The effect isn't completely lost, its just reduced, but visibly so.

    This isn't a jpeg compression thing, because the reduction is visible there in Affinity Photo, before any exporting or saving.

    I'm on a Windows 10 system, if for some reason that should be important.

    I've tried putting the sharpening filter immediately above the pixel layer, putting it at the very top, merging each layer as a separate step, just exporting without flattening...

    Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else observed this? And if so, is there a workaround for it?
