leuveg reacted to Davide.Barranca in [Feat. Request] Syntax Highlighting for Code Text Frames
    Hi,
technical authors – myself included – may need to design books that include programming code (C++, JavaScript, Python, you name it) with proper syntax highlighting. As discussed at length in this thread, copy & paste from the code editor (e.g. Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, Atom, etc.) to a Text Frame doesn't work. Besides, it seems that Edit > Paste Special is a Win only feature of Publisher.
The one workaround available involves an intermediate step:
Copy from the code editor. Paste to an application such as Word, Apple Pages, LibreOffice. Copy from Word/Pages/etc. and paste to Publisher text frame. This way, as far as I get, the proper Rich Text information is preserved. Although the process works, the extra step is not only tedious, but doesn't scale up when the book contains a good deal of code samples that must be maintained in an easier, faster fashion.
It would be much handier to have the option to either select a portion of text in a Text Frame and assign the Language (programming language) that automatically triggers the appropriate syntax highlighting. Or have a Code Text Frame as a separate tool altogether, with properties, options and such.
    Thank you!

Sigh, that's exactly WHY customization options are requested. And the number of options is not the deciding factor, but the number of relevant options. The Soviet criterion for success in production in, say, 1970 was numbers. The result was a disaster. And you can imagine, dissatisfaction. I think and hope Serif would like to be measured on more 2022-like criteria's like quality and relevance.
You will find many more (and relevant!) options and icons in other programs, while the number of different icons (functions) that can be placed on the toolbar in Affinity in version 1.x is minimal. The flexibility of the toolbar is at a low. The first thing many people do is remove the spaces between icons, otherwise the right alignment drags the few usable icons across a large screen. It looks awful and is clumsy to use.
Some customers point this out and request improvements, but a group of mega posters (but not creatives, designers?) want to oppose with arguments so weak that they are almost unreadable. You people simply have to constantly and daily push against customer wants and needs that in no way go against your needs, and that creates noise in here, and is frankly unsympathetic. And it doesn't really resemble what is in the DNA of creatives, to create and move forward and improve.
You have a problem with someone in need of something arguing passionately for it, while you yourself have soon written a whopping 22,000 posts in here? Do you realize how ridiculous that appears? If you had instead READ 22,000 posts and simultaneously tried to see the situation through the eyes of the authors, then you might have learned something.
And look at me, dammit, now I'm writing to a wall on the Internet again.
Serif, you probably got my point and others; I hope you add more options. There is a need for them and they are in demand by customers.

Shouldn't be a big deal to add two additional undo/redo icon buttons to the UI toolbar & tools customizations.

    Hi,
yes it helps and i chill so long

    i have found a workaround:
i have set in aPhoto shortcut menu [ and ] for canvas rotation left and right in the Wacom settings i have set the schortcut to touchring, so works for me. Better would be the upcumming fix, so i have [ and ] free for other things
    thanks and Cheers,

ok, i know. But how can i send a signal to Serif, that this feature is a realy need for me and others? Answer to the old threads? To do nothing?
I understand that you and others not like when a feature more than one time is asked, eventuelly is this feature for you without of interesst. But what should i do? The answer from Serif i also read, but i think as a user i have the rights to ask again or not? It is the user who uses and pays the software or?
Well, not that you disunderstand me, i am not in dispute of you. I just wanted to think abaut it.

    Hei there,
i use a Surface from Microsoft with the pen and this works great in a team.  But the gui of Affinity Designer / Photo is not suitable in tablet mode. Any chance to get the tablet GUI and gesture like iPad for the Surface devices? I see that on video and fotos. Perfektly when i can switch between tablet and desktop modus.

yes, but it can be assumed, also that a people ask a question has use a search engine to find answers or not? Must it always be pointed out?
Let's leave that. That discussion gone the wrong way. The request is in the first post.

leuveg reacted to anweid in Localised typographic quotes
Affinity Publisher 1.7.0.174 on Windows 7, 64bit (German) can auto-correct standard quotes into typographic quotes, which is very useful and a more-or-less standard feature in all serious writing software. Unfortunately, it appears that it can only correct English quotes ("stuff" into “stuff”). It would be nice if the auto-correction would take into account the currently selected language and use the most-often-used quote characters of that language, e.g. (zoomed for better visibility, would even be better with a serifed font):
English: “text” and ‘text’ (as is already done)
    German: „text“ and ‚text‘
    French: « text » and ‹ text ›
(plus others). This should more or less work flawlessly with the double quotes, but might be undesirable with the single quotes, because here, a closing German single quote (looking like a 6) and a German apostrophe (looking like a 9) cannot be distinguished via the usual algorithm. The same is valid for French (it's easy for English, because there, both apostrophe and closing single quote look the same). My suggestion for an algorithm with which to discern closing quotes and apostrophes would be as follows (as far as I know, no other program does that):
If a single quote is entered and the character before it is a space or opening bracket or similar, replace the single quote by an opening single quote (this is already done and should always yield nice results). If a single quote is entered and the character before it is not one of the above, replace the single quote by a closing single quote (this is already done and yields good results, but might be wrong if apostrophes are desired). (this is new) If a 'normal' textual character is entered and the character directly before it is a closing single quote, replace that closing single quote by an apostrophe. This would mean that in case of writing the words it's nice, the single quote would be replaced two times, but at least the end result would be correct... To make it worse, some languages support more than one type of quotes: E.g., since the usual German quotes don't look very nice typographically, most German books use »this type«. Therefore, it would be wonderful if the user could select the auto-correction characters language-dependent manually. One could either include a (rather long and tedious) list of supported languages (as in the screenshot taken from a German text processor, which only supports typical languages used by Germans and is therefore not enough), or offer some edit fields for the user to fill in, as is currently done in PagePlus (which is nice).

These are really good suggestions and should do the trick for a less complex layout.
However, for teaching purposes worksheets will contain a few text frames, each with a two- or three column text. Those texts are often extracts students will read and discuss in class. These texts then should have line numbers, possibly with a modifiable interval (e.g. every fifth line) to make it easier to refer to specific sections. Other elements of the worksheet page may be tasks, pictures or maybe a second text frame with another text extract. So, an automated way for columns in a text frame to have line numbers would be really useful!
    Thanks,
    Frank

    Hi leuveg,
    Welcome to Affinity Forums
Select just the columns (or rows) you want, right-click on them and select Evenly Distribute Columns (or Rows) as Seneca already suggested. It should adjust just the selected items.

I have been searching everywhere on how I can add the typical undo and redo icons on the tool bar.  Where are they?
And please..  do not tell me that they do not exist.  This would be a big issue for me.
    Thanks
