artjourney reacted to herrkjeldsen in Publisher book chapter references should use relative paths
Perhaps a minor for some people, but it sure would be nice if .afbook files used relative paths for chapter references. Rarely, if ever, have I had use for an absolute file reference.
It makes switching from laptop to desktop cumbersome when using cloud storage, as well as with any collaborative workflow.
(If I'm missing a setting for using relative paths, I'd love to hear about it  ).

artjourney got a reaction from debraspicher in how to add border to text frame in Affinity V2 Designer
I bought both AD and AP when it first came out. Then later got all three directly from them (outside of the appstore). Honestly, I RARELY use Photo/Designer and Publisher. Much of what I need to do I’m sure can be done with open source apps, but I just like the clean design of the GUI and like having well-made apps just in case I need to do stuff with it later. It’s only recently that I start to explore and seriously use Publisher. Also, I just like to support companies that care about their users, not forcing them to go the subscription route. Even though I don’t use the Affinity Suit professionally, but I’m sure I will upgrade all three to V3 later on if the price is reasonable.
From a business standpoint, I can understand why “limiting certain functionalities in one program and making them available only in the other is to Serif's advantage.” But I’m also of the opinion that “All this is considered as basic stuff for text editing in a vector program” and should be made available. Once you hit a certain point, you’ll eventually move on to Publisher. Having Text Frame in AD/AP won’t replace Publisher (I think). But not having it in AD can be a bit troublesome when I need to do basic stuff without having to switch to Publisher.
Another option would be to make AP/AD detects the presence of Publisher and if found, enable Text Frame in both AP/AD. If Publisher doesn’t exist on the system, then disable Text Frame.
Anyway, I don’t want to get this thread going off topic. Just want to share a few thoughts.

@artjourney, just a minor thing but note that "AP" is the abbreviation for Affinity Photo, not Affinity Publisher. (It is automatically underlined in posts & if the pointer is hovered over it "Affinity Photo" will pop up.)
You can use APU or the like as an abbreviation for Affinity Publisher.

The question must be asked why you need to detect the chapters? Is it for a ToC? Are you wanting to have them as text like Page Numbers are done? Do you want them as Headers/Footers?
There are different solutions for many different requests. I am always up for a challenge. While I am not a Christian I confess to being a big fan of the King James translation, still solid after all these centuries.

I find the text for the History Panel to be too small, even with “Large”  UI Font Size turned on, the text remains unaffected. I often find myself moving closer to the monitor and squint.

I'm glad you've figured it out. When using sections, you should use a separate story for each section. Don't link the frame on the last page of section 1 to the frame on the first page of section 2 or text will wind up in the wrong sections as you edit the stories.
    Cheers

I'm unable to duplicate this problem and it's something I do constantly. Adding pages anywhere in a section moves the starting page of the next section automatically for me. It makes sense that it works because a section is a grouping of pages so the section start is tied to a specific page.
Could you show a screen recording of the issue because perhaps there's a different way to do it that I haven't tried?
    Thanks

Hi, this is a known bug in 2.2 and is already fixed for the upcoming 2.3.

But we cannot use Sections for bible chapters as there can be more than one 'chapter' per page. We cannot have more than one section per page.

You can break a chapter document up into multiple sections, each with their own story. If a "bible book" is a chapter and a "bible chapter" is a section, then use one story per "bible chapter" section.

Oh sorry, I didn't realize chapters could be that short.
In any case, if each "Bible book" is a separate Affinity chapter, and there are 66 of them, that's plenty of division and I don't think multiple stories are needed within each document.

Here is how I set up Running headers for the Book Names and Chapter : Verse numbers. I used find and replace to give the Chapter and Verse numbers in the text a Character Style which I then used to specify the C&V numbers for the running headers. You could do the same (Use find and replace to find the numbers for the New Chapter Paragraphs) and specify those for a Chapter <Running Header> in a text frame.

The Running Header feature should do what you want. I provided a fairly thorough description of Running Headers in the manual I've shared in this forum (free download, see link in my signature). I didn't provide an example of doing this with the Bible but I did provide an example of dictionary-style usage which should get you half way there.
Also please see these two threads in which another user is using Running Headers for a Bible project. They ran into an issue but that might be fixed by now.

artjourney reacted to thomaso in Publisher: Is it possible place multiple text files with page-break?
    Alternative workarounds:
    • Enter a page-break before you place the next text file. Unfortunately this requires to place every text file separately.
    • Or prepare the .afpub before text imports with several start pages (-> interrupted text flow). Then, for placing the 20 files in 1 go, you can scroll through the .afpub to the next starting page. Unfortunately, unless you prepared the required number of pages per story, it may get confusing afterwards with auto-flow + new pages and their correct arrangement (a coloured page background might make that step easier).

You can use the Books feature, then you'll have a separate chapter in a separate file, but you'll have to convert all text documents to afpub first.
Or if your text documents have styles and start with a header, you can select Flow --> In next frame in the header style settings in Publisher for example

Someone should definitely start a thread where regular expressions snippets like this are stored in one place. I’m sure a lot of us here have similar problems that can be solved with RegEx.

If you are working with such large texts and many chapters, you can use Book, when each chapter will be in a separate file.

You can use Find & Replace, with a regular expression, to find groups of digits and assign a Character Text Style to them.

I started out with Windows, and switched to macOS, and now looking to switch to Linux for life. Haven't switch yet, but preparing and making plans to. I really like macOS but I have a feeling they will go evil in the future, so I’m jumping ship. Blender and Krita, two big apps for me and Linux supports it. Only Affinity is missing. Was hoping that I could use it via Wine or Crossover, but from what I'm reading on here it doesn't work.
Right now I got all three Affinity apps for macOS, but looks like I will have to get the Windows versions for 2.0 when it’s out and dual boot it. OR keep my macbook and use it for Affinity. Tough choice...

It looks like this 1.9 has problems with keyboard shortcuts.
With Designer: Shortcut doesn't take effect when switching to Pixel Persona. I would have to reload my saved shortcuts ever time I start designer. The default Persona works fine. A similar problem also occurs with Photo. In Develop Persona, my custom shortcuts doesn’t work, no matter how many times I set or load it, it simply won't take effect.
