I just presented my opinion. But looking at it from a purely business perspective, limiting certain functionalities in one program and making them available only in the other is to Serif's advantage. I don't know what are the reasons why some options are blocked. That knows only Serif team.
Take a look at Adobe Illustrator (I don't like comparing to Adobe products). It has tab ruler to visualy manage tabstops, text frames can be linked, there's "area type options" panel with some nice features like columns, gutters, insets etc. All this is considered as basic stuff for text editing in a vector program.

I bought both AD and AP when it first came out. Then later got all three directly from them (outside of the appstore). Honestly, I RARELY use Photo/Designer and Publisher. Much of what I need to do I’m sure can be done with open source apps, but I just like the clean design of the GUI and like having well-made apps just in case I need to do stuff with it later. It’s only recently that I start to explore and seriously use Publisher. Also, I just like to support companies that care about their users, not forcing them to go the subscription route. Even though I don’t use the Affinity Suit professionally, but I’m sure I will upgrade all three to V3 later on if the price is reasonable.

From a business standpoint, I can understand why “limiting certain functionalities in one program and making them available only in the other is to Serif's advantage.” But I’m also of the opinion that “All this is considered as basic stuff for text editing in a vector program” and should be made available. Once you hit a certain point, you’ll eventually move on to Publisher. Having Text Frame in AD/AP won’t replace Publisher (I think). But not having it in AD can be a bit troublesome when I need to do basic stuff without having to switch to Publisher.

Another option would be to make AP/AD detects the presence of Publisher and if found, enable Text Frame in both AP/AD. If Publisher doesn’t exist on the system, then disable Text Frame.

Anyway, I don’t want to get this thread going off topic. Just want to share a few thoughts.

  2. For the benefit of those following, Expand Field works and will affect all pages EVEN when you’re doing it on the Master page.

The only problem is that if the Field such as a Running Header is depended on a style to get its value, then Expand Field on a Master will output <RUNNING HEADER> (for example) for all pages with that master.

If the Field is not depended on any style, then Expand Field works as expected. In my case, I can bake the Book Name, but not Book CHAPTER. The chapter number has a specific style and baking the Field will give a blank (if doing it on a regular page), or <RUNNING HEADER> (if doing it on a master page).

I have no problem baking the Book Name because the Field is not looking for any style. It’s just a static string (variable) I can easily change in the Fields manager.

Sorry, but the 211-ch3.afpub file just won't upload. It gets Error Code 200.

You should be able to find it here, @DWright: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jjudm8vf69ts1vixogewp/211-ch3.afpub?rlkey=w0j255ojyyy9ppgpefnsjxqpe&dl=0

I just downloaded the file and tested it out, and if the file is closed while exporting, it appears as running header. Good to know that it’s a problem and that I’m not the only one experiencing it. >

Now I just need to wait for it to get fixed, not sure how long. :D Currently using 2.3.0

I’m sorry but the inability to just turn it off globally feels like a huge oversight. It’s a design program—we shouldn’t have to find “workarounds” just to make our text appear without redline markup.

Three almost-daily ways I encounter this problem:

    1– designing for multilingual environments

2– designing for specialized fields with their own jargon

3– wireframing websites and using a lorem ipsum placeholder

I continually leave spell check off on all the design software I use, for the above reasons. But I can’t turn it off on the current Affinity Designer for iPad (there’s no “burger menu” on the Text panel)—the closest I’ve found is clicking “learn” or “ignore” for EVERY word, which is an absurd bother when it’s a large passage of text. I’m stunned this option is nowhere in the application’s global Preferences. Please add it?

I’m with you on this. I know you can disable it, but I still get paranoid that AP might accidentally auto-correct a word. There should be a check somewhere in the setting that completely shut it off for peace of mind. Now I have to make sure that Check spelling is unchecked, and "Replace text while typing" is unchecked in the Settings etc… When you’re working on thousand of pages of text with archaic words, you’ll understand the paranoia. :) The preflight scares me.

That won't work on a master page because the field has no value on a master. You'd have to expand the filed on a document page and the value on that page will be expanded. It works the same way as page numbers - if you expand a page number field on a master you'll just get a # sign.

Looks like this is still a lot of work to do it manually. I was thinking of letting AP does its thing(s) with the running header, once AP calculated then it convert them all at once but baking isn’t a feature yet. Expand Field seems to work only for the page that it was expanded on.

No idea if this is a thing, but google says it isn't so I'm here to ask about it.

as a photoshop refugee, I would love to see the option to change the zoom functionality from Ctrl+Scroll to Alt+Scroll. I have so much muscle memory built up that trying to switch over to Ctrl+Scroll is monumental at this point. More flexibility with the shortcuts in general would be appreciated but this is one thing I would love to see.

on Windows you have AutoHotkey (very powerful tool for mouse/key modification). I use it back when I was on Windows. It can do much more such as pixel detection etc.. almost like programming.

on macOS, you have Karabiner . Not as powerful as AutoHotkey but good enough for most modifications. For example, I use this combo a lot in AP: Backspace, Enter. To save me the hassle of having to use my right hand to reach these two keys, I map them into one button on my mouse with Karabiner. One mouse click = Backspace, Enter. And you can make it so it only activate when AP is active. Very cool app. There’s a bit of learning curve so it’s not user friendly at first but there are plenty of examples out there you can use to modify. This is my example, showing you what can be done:

You can convert any field, including a running header, to plain text by right-clicking it and choosing Expand Field.

I have a masterpage with the <RUNNING HEADER>. I right click on that and Expand Field. Every page now has the string <RUNNING HEADER> instead of numerical value. Looks like AP converts the Field <RUNNING HEADER> into actual “RUNNING HEADER” string for all pages?

  8. Come to think of it, why doesn’t AP have an option to bake the running header? This way people can get the number to be exactly as it is. This of course means that they need to have a backup of the original file if they need to change/modify it in the future, but I assume that people back up their stuff just in case, so turning Running Header into actual values (baking it) can a void a lot of hassles.

  9. After messing around I finally found that Running Header is actually very effective for what I’m trying to achieve. This saves me from having to manually adjust the Section(s) when I start to pad the page via Enter key, so I’m no longer using Section. It works perfectly as a standalone PDF export.

However, there is something that is confusing me a bit when it comes to importing each file into the Books. Let’s say I import 3 separate pub files into Books to be exported as a single PDF. What will happen in the final PDF export is that it shows <RUNNING HEADER> instead. Yes, that exact string. I decided to have all three pub files opened and then export them as one via Books and the running header is as expected. Does this mean I have to have all the pub files OPENED before exporting them via Books?

  10. I have scanned through posts talking about editable fields in PDF, and currently none of that is possible in AP. I’m hoping that future AP will have it. Right now I wonder if there’s a workaround. Is it even possible to design just a page with checkboxes in another app and then have that PDF imported into AP and then having it exported along with AP pages afterward?

Also popups would be great. Here are practical usages:

    1. For checkbox, this can be helpful with Bible Reading plan, where readers can read the Bible within the PDF and then check what they have read.

    2. Popup: Can be useful if user click on a word and a popup appears with definition or any kind of information.

I'm unable to duplicate this problem and it's something I do constantly. Adding pages anywhere in a section moves the starting page of the next section automatically for me. It makes sense that it works because a section is a grouping of pages so the section start is tied to a specific page.

Could you show a screen recording of the issue because perhaps there's a different way to do it that I haven't tried?

    Thanks

Actually you’re correct! (after trying to duplicate the problem). Adding pages the proper way will auto adjust the section. It looks like I have been doing it the improper way. I extend the section by adding in additional info (texts) to the last page in the current section or just to make things more neat and clean, I press ENTER a lot, and that added more page(s) and then it pushes the next section further down, and that messed up the section. Hmm… looks like I have to think and plan ahead to avoid this.

  12. Not sure if this applies here, but I have my sections all setup the way I wanted.  Let’s say:

    Section 1, Section 2, Section 3, Section 4 etc…

Then somewhere in Section 2, I decided to append 3 pages at the end (or anywhere within Section 2), now Section 3 and onward have to be adjusted manually because the added pages messed up with the page range. Anyway to avoid having to manually adjust Section 3 and onward?

  13. I decided to recreate my main document file to use NON-facing pages as a test, and that seems to solve it. Hyperlinking to anchor works as expected, no jumping to wrong pages. Looks like facing pages confuse Books. Anyway, my workflow is this: Each book of the Bible is its own document file. That means there would be 66 documents. But each document (bible book) can have many chapters. With that in mind, how would I go about doing what you described?

    > I recommend breaking a long document like that up into separate stories for each chapter to improve performance.

  14. Thanks for the file. Will definitely check it out. I have been reading through the PDF manual by @MikeTO and it has helped me to stay a bit more organized with the way I do things. Currently for me, the Section manager seems to do the job, since I’m only after the Chapter number and not verse number.

I can even create a separate page within the same document to jump to any chapter in the document via Insert Hyperlink and then choose a particular Section (as chapter). At first I targeted the page number, but then quickly found out that it can break if new page is added/removed because that would alter the page count/number. So Section Manager seems to work great IF I’m exporting that document to PDF.

HOWEVER, I have to think further down the road and will be using the Books feature, so I made a test Book and imported two documents. The first document has just one page, and the second document, which is the main one with chapters/sections that I have setup etc..,  and then I exported both of these documents as PDF via Books’ hamburger menu. But then the chapter index with hyperlink to each Section as Chapter doesn’t work in the PDF.. it has blue links (hyperlink) etc.. but nothing works when I click on it. BUT it worked if I opened that document separately and exported just that document.

Not sure if this is solvable. Based on my limited knowledge of AP, I guess one way to solve this is to revert back to Hyperlinking to page number instead of Section as chapter. But that would mean I would have to be careful with adding/removing page(s) in that same document.

EDIT: Strange… not sure what I did the first time that throw everything out of sync, but this time hyperlinking to page number works. Even by adding extra pages, the hyperlinked auto-update. So this is one solution. But I’m still curious if the Section problem above can be solved for Books.

EDIT2: Well, looks like hyperlinking to page number is off by one page when exporting it via Books. I’m guessing it’s because of the extra page in the test doc…

  15. Thanks a lot. I will definitely check them out. Earlier I slowed down a bit and gave the Section Manager another go after I realized that you can just right click on the active page to start a new section. Doing it via Section Manager was confusing at first. For the section name, I just give it a number and then use that as a variable. Not sure if this is the most optimized way of doing thing, and not sure if the section/number will be altered if new pages are deleted/or removed.

  16. Regular books are straightforward, but I find religious text a bit challenging. For example: How do I have Running book chapter instead of Running Header? Like, on top of having your regular page number at the bottom (usual place) of the page, how do you detect Chapter number within a given book? I tried Section Manger, but that doesn’t seem to do it. Think of the Bible as an example. There are about 1000 chapters.

  17. For those that work with importing multiple text files into Publisher. What’s the best way to not have them all cramped together? Let’s say you have 20 text files, and each file can take up to more than 3 pages in Publisher. But each file is a new chapter. Is there a way to automatically page-break on a new file or some way to make a mark so you know it’s a new file just by glancing at it? One way I can think of is have something like "---" at the beginning of each text file, and then just import them into publisher (this would mean that I have to modify 100+ files). Afterward, use the find/replace and search for "---" and then replace it with a page-break. Is this the only way?

  18. Someone should definitely start a thread where regular expressions snippets like this are stored in one place. I’m sure a lot of us here have similar problems that can be solved with RegEx.
